Rediscovery of a Broad Array of Lewis Acids for Living Cationic Polymerization in the Presence of an Added Base

  • Cationic polymerization of isobutyl vinyl ether using various metal halides was examined in toluene in the presence of an added base at $0^{\circ}C$. In conjunction with an appropriate weak base such as ethyl acetate or 1,4-dioxane, all metal halides but $FeBr_{3}\;and\;GaCl_{3}$ led to living cationic polymerization. The polymerization rates varied as follows: $FeBr_{3},\;GaCl_{3}\;>\;FeCl_{3}\;>\;SnCl_{4}\;>\;InCl_{3}\;>\;ZnCl_{2}\;>>\;AlCl_{3},\;HfCl_{4},\;ZrCl_{4}\;>\;EtAlCl_{2},\;BiCl_{3},\;TiCl4\;>>\;SiCl_{4}\;>\;GeCl_{4}$. This order partially corresponds to that of the equilibrium constant in the formation of a carbocation from a chloroalkane in the presence of a carbonyl compound. With extremely active Lewis acids, such as $FeBr_{3}\;and\;GaCl_{3}$, the use of a stronger base, THF, was required to achieve living polymerization.

글리옥살을 이용한 마직물의 무포름알데히드 방추가공(제 1보)-촉매의 영향 (Nonformaldehyde Anti-crease Finish of Ramie with Glyoxal (Part I))

  • The effects of various catalysts and softners on the anti-crease finish of ramie with glyoxal were investigated. A number of metal salts commonly used as Lewis acid catalysts in DP finishing of cotton with formaldehyde and N-methylol agents were screened for glyoxal treatment of ramie fabric. Various organic and inorganic acids were mixed with Lewis acid catalyst as co-catalysts to improve catalytic activity. As a result, the combination of aluminum sulfate and citric acid was proven highly effective in catalyzing the crosslinking of ramie cellulose by glyoxal under lower curing temperature. With a mixed catalyst, performance properties, such as whiteness and tearing strength as well as wrinkle recovery of treated ramie fabric were improved as compared with that treated with aluminum sulfate alone. Additional improvement of tearing strength and wrinkle recovery was achieved by applying silicons softner in the treatment bath.

The Importance of Halogen Bonding: A Tutorial

  • Halogen atoms in a molecule are traditionally considered as electron donors, since they have unshared electrons. Normally when they are bonded, there are three lone pair electrons. These lone pairs can function as Lewis bases. However, when they are bound to electron withdrawing groups, they can act as Lewis acids. Since the situation is similar hydrogen bonding (HB), this type of interaction is named as halogen bonding (XB). This mainly comes from the uneven distribution of electron density around the halogen atoms. Since the electron density around halogen atom opposite to ${\sigma}$-bond is depleted, its electropositive region is called ${\sigma}$-hole. This ${\sigma}$-hole can attract halogen bond acceptors, requiring more stringent directionality compared to HB. Since this interaction mainly comes from electrostatic origin, the geometry tends to be linear. Since the XB energy is comparable to corresponding HB. Still in its infancy, XB shows a broad range of applicability, with potentially more useful properties, compared to corresponding HB.

  • Trimethylglycine, commonly named betaine, is the most simple amphoteric molecule. It is completely vegetal (1,2), as it is produced in the sugar industry by industrial chromatography of molasses. While abundantly used in foods and diet supplements, many interesting applications in cosmetics have recently been investigated, like its capability to increase the volume and stability of foams in surfactant solutions. For its special chemical structure (it is the internal salt of a weak acid and a strong alkali) trimethylglycine is a solvent and buffering agent for strong acids and Lewis' acids. It allows to improve the efficiency of $\alpha$- and $\beta$-hydroxy acids in increasing the physiological rate of epidermal cell renewal, while keeping a low skin-irritation level. In oral care cosmetics, it acts as a mucous membrane protectant (3). For its special water co-ordination capability, its solubilising power, polymer swelling capability, after-feel improvement in hair products, skin moisturization and elasticity enhancing properties, trimethylglycine provides unusual characteristics to many products intended for skin maintenance (4).(omitted)

Silicate 上에서의 아민의 吸着. Protonic 酸 자리와 Aprotonic 酸 자리의 區別 (The Adsorption of Amines on Silicates. Distinction Protonic and Aprotonic Acids Sites)

  • 여러가지 양이온이 교환된 silicate 상에 pyridine, tertiary butylamine, ethylenediamine을 흡착시켜 IR spectra를 4000 ∼ 1200 $cm^{-1}$의 범위에서 그리고 여러 다른 탈기온도에서 얻었다. 이 결과 protonic 산 자리와 aprotonic 산 자리를 구별할 수 있었으며 양이온이 교환된 모든 silicate는 Bronsted 산과 Lewis 산을 모두 나타내었다. 그리고$ Na^+$이온이 교환된 silicate가 adsorbate와의 반응성이 가장 적게 나타났다. Tertiary butylamine의 band intensity의 상대적인 비는 교환된 양이온의 polarizing power와 비례하고 두개의 amino group을 가지고 있는 ethylenediamine은 tertiary butylamine에 비해서 silicate 표면으로부터 쉽게 탈착되지 않았으며 또한 Lewis 산 자리와 coordination bond를 이루는 경우와 Bronsted 산 자리와 $NH3^+$ 종을 만드는 경우외에 migrating proton을 떼어 냄으로 말미암아 표면산소와의 수소결합을 이루는 경우가 조사되었다.

  • Deprotection of the benzyl group has been widely used in multi-step organic synthesis with a variety of reaction conditions. including catalytic hydrogenolysis. Lewis acids such as FeCl$_3$ or MgBr$_2$ and lithium naphthalenide. However. these procedures sometimes can be problematic with multifunctional substrates. such as unsaturated bonds during hydrogenolysis. an acid-labile moiety in FeCl$_3$ and a easily reducible functional group in lithium naphthalenide.   • Sufentanil, a potent anilidopiperidine analgesic, was synthesized from a simple thiophenylethylamine via six sequence. The key parts of this synthesis involved an efficient construction of thiophenylethylpiperidone by aminomethano desilylation-cyclization followed by Swern oxidation and a direct regioselective N-nucleophilic spiral epoxide cleavage with aniline promoted by Lewis acids.

  • 본 논문에서는 매우 효과적이고 고광학선택적으로 화합물 중의 말단기에 존재하는 에폭사이드기를 알킬 또는 아렌술폰산으로 여는 방법에 관하여 기고한다. Al, Ga 및 In과 같은 루이스산을 함유하는 이핵성 키랄 코발트살렌 착체는 염화테트라부틸암모늄 존재하에서 터샬리 부틸메틸에테르를 용매로 사용할 때, 이 반응에 대하여 광학선택적으로 높은 촉매활성을 나타내었다. 테트라부틸암모늄염 중의 음이온의 종류에 따라 페닐글리시딜 에테르의 에폭시 고리를 파라-톨루엔술폰산으로 여는 반응에서의 촉매활성과 선택도가 다르게 나타났다. 반응활성과 선택도는 $Cl^-$ > $l^-$ > $Br^-$ > $OH^-$의 순서를 보였다. 서로 다른 루이스 산점을 갖는 Co-Al, Co-Ga 및 Co-In 착체는 촉매반응 중에 높은 상승효과를 나타내었다. $AlCl_3$를 함유한 이핵성 키랄 코발트살렌 착체 촉매가 가장 높은 활성과 91% ee에 이르는 높은 광학선택성을 보였다.

The impact of cancer cachexia on gut microbiota composition and short-chain fatty acid metabolism in a murine model

  • This study investigates the relationship between cancer cachexia and the gut microbiota, focusing on the influence of cancer on microbial composition. Lewis lung cancer cell allografts were used to induce cachexia in mice, and body and muscle weight changes were monitored. Fecal samples were collected for targeted metabolomic analysis for short chain fatty acids and microbiome analysis. The cachexia group exhibited lower alpha diversity and distinct beta diversity in gut microbiota, compared to the control group. Differential abundance analysis revealed higher Bifidobacterium and Romboutsia, but lower Streptococcus abundance in the cachexia group. Additionally, lower proportions of acetate and butyrate were observed in the cachexia group. The study observed that the impact of cancer cachexia on gut microbiota and their generated metabolites was significant, indicating a host-to-gut microbiota axis.
