  • Background: The government should find ways to improve the effectiveness of the policies to control the incidence and mortality of the infectious disease. The purpose of this study is to find out whether the trust in the government's ability to respond to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) affects the quarantine and hospitalization rate, incidence and mortality rates of COVID-19 and quarantine rules compliance in each region of Korea. Methods: The subject of this study is 250 regions (si·gun·gu) in Korea, and the 2020 Community Health Survey data from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) was used for the trust in the government's ability to respond to COVID-19, quarantine and hospitalization rate and quarantine rules compliance. For the incidence and mortality of COVID-19 and community factors, data was obtained from KDCA and Korean Statistical Information Service. Path analysis was used to find out the degree of inter-variable influence, and community factors (socio-demographic factors, community health factors, and health behavior factors) were used as control variables. Results: The regional disparity in key variables showed that the late pandemic period cumulative incidence and mortality of COVID-19 were large, while the early pandemic period quarantine and hospitalization rate and quarantine rules compliance were small. Path analysis showed that when community factors were controlled, the trust in government was statistically significant in all of the late pandemic period cumulative incidence (p=0.024) and mortality (p=0.017), and quarantine rules compliance (p=0.011). Conclusion: This study revealed that the higher the trust in the government's ability to respond to COVID-19, the lower the COVID-19 mortality and the higher the quarantine rules compliance at the regional level in Korea. This suggests that when the government implements healthcare policies to control infectious diseases, it is necessary to consider trust to improve policy compliance and control the mortality of the disease and maintain high trust through several effective methods.

  • This study investigates the effects of trust and distrust on intention to purchase in open markets, based on the ideas derived from previous studies such as coexistence of trust and distrust, and two distinct trustees in open markets-intermediary and sellers. Specifically, this study i) proposes a trust-distrust model of intermediary and sellers, ii) explores the transfer of trust and distrust from intermediary to sellers, and iii) discovers the antecedents of trust and distrust. The empirical validation using Partial Least Squares shows three results as follows. First, trust in intermediary positively affects intention to purchase through the mediated impact of trust in sellers. That is, trust in intermediary transfers to trust in sellers. Second, distrust in intermediary negatively affects intention to purchase through the mediated impact of customers' perceived risk. Third, structural assurance and perceived website quality positively affect trust in intermediary. The results of this research have implications for intermediary firms not only to build trust but also to manage distrust level. However, this study could not identify any antecedent of distrust, so further research for these antecedents will be needed in the future.

  • Recently, blogs have attracted much attention as personal media. The power of blogs as a way to provide valuable resources on Internet is so tremendous because of the high speed of information dissemination and the huge influence of the circulated information on Internet users even when the information itself is not true. Especially, contents on blogs that attract a lot of public attention are sometimes reproduced or magnified in an inappropriate way. In this paper, a method to measure the trust level of contents posted on personal blogs is proposed to reduce the damage of wrong information circulated along with blog networks. Trust variables such as relationship data in SNS are used to measure the comparative trust level of blog contents. The structure of the prototype system is also designed to apply this framework to blogsphere.

  • The Internet allows firms to serve customers more effectively than ever before. In the B2C context, we examine the interrelationships among information privacy concerns, e-trust, and e-loyalty. The authors extend prior research by incorporating constructs of information privacy concerns into a more holistic conceptual framework. This study answers three research questions: Will the three components of information privacy concerns have a significant effect on e-loyalty through e-trust?, Does e-trust mediate e-loyalty?, Finally, do switching costs have a moderation effect between e-trust and e-loyalty?, The authors examine data from customers who have booked hotel accommodations online. The results support our hypotheses and confirm both the mediation role of e-trust and the moderation role of switching costs. Conceptually, this study provides an empirical validation of information privacy concerns, e-trust, and loyalty linkage. On the managerial level, this research provides insights into critical drivers of loyalty in the emerging online marketplace.

  • New information communication technologies are changing our society completely, offering the government new possibilities for providing citizens and businesses with better, and more efficient E-Government services. This study analyzes the direct and indirect impact of service value, innovativeness, and users' participation level on the trust toward the Government. Results from a citizen survey indicate that service value, innovativeness, and participation positively affect the trust toward the Government, and that innovativeness has been found to affect service value as well as the level of participation. However, the moderating effect of political efficacy on the relationship between two variables(service value and participation) and trust have been found to be insignifcant. Several other findings and policy implications are also discussed.

  • This study is based upon the assumption that trust is a pedestal of much importance in the relationship behavior marketing channel members conduct in their arena. Unlike the existing studies that consider trust to be a circular simple concept with the emphasis on mutually symmetrical relationship level, this study focuses on the asymmetrically different levels of asymmetric trust concept. The major results of this study are as follows: First, among the individual characteristics which could affect on trust, reputation plays a significant role in transaction. Second, in the domain of the relation between trust and relationship characteristics, opportunistic behavior is shown to influence upon trust. Communication is turn out not to be a significant factor in trust; in a further analysis, it is also shown to influence upon willingness to make future relationship behavior. Third, willingness to make future relationship behavior plays a significant influence on trust, which shows that trust is the very core factor in the long-term relationship behavior. We can find that the antecedent factors influencing upon the trust build-up are different between agents and buyers and the established trust influences upon the future relationship behavior. This study tries to show how trust is established and what role the trust conducts.

  • The objectives of this study were to investigate the followers's perception of the behavioral characteristics of middle managers' leadership styles and the relationship between middle managers' behavioral characteristics by leadership style and followers' trust in middle managers. The data were collected from the officials of the Rural Development Administration(RDA) of Korea in September, 2001. A total of 215 questionnaires out of 232 distributed were collected and 211 valid ones analyzed. The results from the study were as follows: First, on the leadership styles of the middle managers of RDA, the perception points of the staffs of offices/divisions were 3.56 points in servant leadership style, 3.48 points in transformational leadership style and 3.51 in transactional leadership style from the possible 5.0 points scale. Second, the mean point of the trust level of the staff to the middle managers was 3.64 points indicating that the directors in general tried to treat the staff of offices/divisions with equitably and to communicate with them openly. Third, the correlation between the trust of followers and several variables showed that the subordinate behavioral characteristics of servant leadership, transformational leadership and transactional leadership had positive effects on the trust. Especially 'individualized consideration' and 'contingent rewards' were highly correlated.

  • This study has analyzed the interrelation between transformational leadership (TL) and organizational commitment (OC) so as to verify the mediating effect of their trust on OC, finding that charisma and intellectual stimulus have a significant effect on affective and continuous commitment. This finding is different from any existing arguments where the charisma of TL and the individual consideration are said to have a significant and positive effect on affective and continuous commitment. Furthermore, the mediating effect, which was expected to be highly relevant on the grounds of the findings of previous researches that any high trust of a leader would lead to a high level of OC of members, has been revealed as a complete mediation in the relationship of emotional trust between individual consideration and OC, which shows that the correlation between TL and OC may vary depending on the characteristics of an organization and its members both of which are sample objects. This study, unlike most previous researches with their research samples in industrial fields, has estimated the growing interrelation of NGOs. Therefore, while this study itself may have its research-limit of specificity, it is expected to make a useful contribution to any future researches of the same category.
