Intensity of background noise is a factor significantly affecting both subjective evaluation of experienced stress level and associated electroencephalographic (EEG) responses during mental load in noisy environments. In the study on 27 subjects we analyzed the influence of the background white noise (WN) intensity on psychophysiological responses during a word recognition test. Electrocortical activity were recorded during baseline resting state and 40 s long performance on 3 similar Korean word recognition tests with different intensities of background WN (55, 70 and 85 dB).. An important finding in terms of physiological reactivity was similarity of all physiological response profiles between 55 and 70dB WN, i.e., none of physiological variables differentiated the two conditions, while 85dB WN resulted in a significantly different profile of reactions (higher fast beta power in EEG spectra). This condition was characterized by highest subjective rating of experienced stress, had more fast beta activity and had tendency of right hemisphere dominance, emphasizing the role of brain lateralization in negative affect control.
In this paper, a method to determine the optimal configuration of operating policies in an integrated-automated manufacturing system using the Taguchi method and computer simulation experiments is presented. An integrated-automated manufacturing system called direct-input-output manufacturing system(DIOMS) is described. We only consider the operational aspect of the DIOMS. Four operating policies including input sequencing control, dispatching rule for the storage/retrieval(S/R) machine, machine center-based part type selection rule, and storage assignment policy are treated as design factors. The number of machine centers, the number of part types, demand rate, processing time and the rate of each part type, vertical and horizontal speed of the S/R machine, and the size of a local buffer in the machine centers are considered as noise factors in generating various manufacturing system environment. For the performance characteristics, mean flow time and throughput are adopted. A robust design experiment with inner and outer orthogonal arrays are conducted by computer simulation, and an optimal configuration of operating policies is presented which consists of a combination of the level of each design factor. The validity of the optimal configurations is investigated by comparing their signal-to-noise ratios with those obtained with full factorial designs.
We have designed and fabricated the single-layer high $T_{c}$ SQUID magnetometer consisting of a directly coupled grain boundary junction SQUID with an inductance of 100 pH and 16 nested parallel pickup coils with the outermost dimension of 8.8 mm ${\times}$ 8.8 mm. The magnetometer was formed from a YBCO thin film deposited on an STO(100) bicrystal substrate with a misorientation angle of $30^{\circ}$. The SQUID magnetometer was further improved by optimizing the multi-loop pickup coil design for use in unshielded environments. Typical characteristics of the dc SQUID magnetometer had a modulation voltage of 40 $\mu\textrm{V}$ and a white noise of $30fT/Hz^{1}$2/. The SQUID magnetometer exhibited a 1/f noise level at 10 Hz reduced by a factor of about 3 compared with that of the conventional solid type pickup coil magnetometers and a very stable flux locked loop operation in magnetically disturbed environments.s.
This study investigated the characteristics of heavy-weight floor impact sounds of box-frame type structure using 1:10 scale model. Ten types of floor structures(bare slabs and floating floors) were evaluated in terms of dynamic stiffness and loss factor. Floor vibrations and radiated sounds generated by simulated impact source were also measured. The results showed that the bakelite was appropriate for simulating concrete slab in the 1:10 scale model, and surface velocity and sound pressure level of concrete slab measured from the scale model showed similar tendencies with the results from in-situ in frequency domain. It was also found that dynamic behaviors of layered floor structures in the 1:10 scale model were similar to those in a real scale. Therefore, the use of 1:10 scale model would be useful for evaluating the heavy-weight floor impact sound insulation of layered floor structures when the frequency-dependent dynamic properties of each material are known.
The solution for PFC(Power Factor Correction), as a regulation in energy Policy, is becoming a hot Issue in every country because of the shortage of electrical energy. Therefore, a new improved idea for PFC problem has been introduced in this study. A lot of merits, effective cost by simple circuit, reduced PCB size, lighter than reactor in the view of weight, lower level of screen noise by leakage inductance in CTV applications, have been stated by comparing to the earlier method of using a Reactor. All test results in this statement were done by using a power device of STR-G9600 series based on the real load condition of color television. furthermore, the study shows that the test results also meets the IEC-1000-3-2 class D, which regulates the PFC when input power of a set is more than 75watts. More improved PFC in other applications hopes to be implemented by using the proposed method.
The aerodynamic damping is an essential factor that can considerably affect the dynamic response of the cable-stayed bridge induced by crosswind load. However, developing an accurate and efficient aerodynamic damping model is crucial for evaluating the crosswind load-induced response on cable-stayed bridges. Therefore, this study proposes a new method for identifying aerodynamic damping of the bridge structures under crosswind load using an extended Kalman filter (EKF) and the particle filter (PF) algorithm. The EKF algorithm is introduced to capture the aerodynamic damping ratio. PF technique is used to select the optimal spectral representation of the noise. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed solution were investigated through full-scale vibration measurement data of the crosswind-induced on the bridge's girder. The results show that the proposed solution can generate an efficient and robust estimation. The errors between the target and extracted values are around 0.01mm and 0.003^o, respectively, for the vertical and torsional motion. The relationship between the amplitude and the aerodynamic damping ratio is linear for small reduced wind velocity and nonlinear with the increasing value of the reduced wind velocity. Finally, the results show the influence of the level of noise.
This paper presents the summary of control of abnormal vibration found in the COP motors of a nuclear power plant. All six identical units of COP pump-motor assemblies showed unstable vibration pattern of which one or two showed higher vibration enough to exceed the allowable level from the installation stage. Many trials of test, measurement, overhaul and replacement had been repeated to investigate and solve the problem but only to reach unsatisfactory settlement. Recently several times of site tests are made and followed by significant diagnostic actions in which the authors group participated. It was found that the coupled shafting system of motor and pump is in close resonance with the $1^{st}$ shaft rotating speed. Redesign of topside motor bearing clearance is made to increase bearing stiffness and hence to avoid the resonance which consequently led to reduce the troubled vibration to allowable and stable status.
Room acoustic properties of coupled rooms connected by an aperture has been analyzed using statistical acoustic model based on the diffused sound field assumption, which has limitation in dealing with the parameters such an room geometries and non uniform absorptivity of the boundary surfaces. In order to overcome these difficulties the acoustic diffusion model has been introduced, by which distribution of the acoustic energy density can be analyzed for various shapes and wall absorptivity. In this study acoustic properties of coupled rooms connected by an aperture(e.g. door) is analyzed using acoustic diffusion equation, which is solved numerically. The mean energy densities of two rooms obtained by the diffusion model are compared with those from the statistical model. The results show good agreement for various coupling aperture sizes and absorption coefficients. For a limiting case when the partition wall is substituted by an aperture and the two rooms eventually forms a single room, results of coupled room analysis using diffusion model show good agreement with those of a single room.
Various numerical methods have been adopted for indoor noise assessments of ship plant. Acoustical radiosity method is one of the high frequency approaches for acoustic field analysis, which assumes diffuse reflections by boundaries so that it could be efficiently applied to the acoustically diffused indoor space noise analysis. In this study, an acoustic field analysis program has been developed based on radiosity method, which could apply for acoustically large enclosures such as ship's indoor space. For this purpose, the procedure of the acoustical radiosity method has been summarized and implemented to an acoustic field analysis program using MATLAB. Numerical example for a rectangular indoor space has investigated validity of the implemented program. Steady state sound pressure levels calculated for a continuous acoustic source signal have shown good agreement with those by other solutions such as an analytic solution and a ray tracing method. Instantaneous sound pressure levels calculated for an impulsive acoustic signal have provided the clues of direct/reflected acoustic field and reverberation time.
