  • This study examined the thermal reactions of 2,4-dibromophenol (diBP), 2,6-diBP and 2,4,6-triBP. The products obtained under pyrolytic conditions were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). 2,7-dibromodibenzo-p-dioxin (diBDD) was the major compound produced from the thermal reaction of 2,4-diBP. In addition, monoBDD and triBDDs were obtained through a process of debromination and bromination, respectively. The pyrolysis of 2,6-diBP and 2,4,6-triBP produced two major brominated dioxin isomers through direct condensation and a Smiles rearrangement. The two ortho-Brs in 2,6-diBP and 2,4,6-triBP mainly led to the production of dioxins, whereas in addition to 2,7-diBDD, 2,4-diBP produced two furans as minor products, 2,8-dibromodibenzofuran (diBDF) and 2,4,8-triBDF, through the intermediate dihydroxybiphenyl (DOHB). The maximum yield of the major dioxins was obtained at 400 oC, and decomposition by debromination at 500 oC resulted in less substituted bromodioxins.

  • This paper presents an analytic and numerical simulation of the generation and propagation of pico-second ultrasound with nano-scale wavelength, enabling the production of bulk waves in thin films. An analytic model of laser-matter interaction and elasto-dynamic wave propagation is introduced to calculate the elastic strain pulse in microstructures. The model includes the laser-pulse absorption on the material surface, heat transfer from a photon to the elastic energy of a phonon, and acoustic wave propagation to formulate the governing equations of ultra-short ultrasound. The excitation and propagation of acoustic pulses produced by ultra-short laser pulses are numerically simulated for an aluminum substrate using the finite-difference method and compared with the analytical solution. Furthermore, Fourier analysis was performed to investigate the frequency spectrum of the simulated elastic wave pulse. It is concluded that a pico-second bulk wave with a very high frequency of up to hundreds of gigahertz is successfully generated in metals using a 100-fs laser pulse and that it can be propagated in the direction of thickness for thickness less than 100 nm.

  • The large container ships and fast patrol boats are complex marine structures. Therefore, their global mechanical behaviour has long been modeled mostly by refined beam theories. Important issues of cross section warping and bending-torsion coupling have been addressed by introducing special functions in these theories with inherent assumptions and thus compromising their robustness. The 3D solid Finite Element (FE) models, on the other hand, are accurate enough but pose high computational cost. In this work, different marine vessel structures have been analysed using the well-known Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF). According to CUF, the governing equations (and consequently the finite element arrays) are written in terms of fundamental nuclei that do not depend on the problem characteristics and the approximation order. Thus, refined models can be developed in an automatic manner. In the present work, a particular class of 1D CUF models that was initially devised for the analysis of aircraft structures has been employed for the analysis of marine structures. This class, which was called Component-Wise (CW), allows one to model complex 3D features, such as inclined hull walls, floors and girders in the form of components. Realistic ship geometries were used to demonstrate the efficacy of the CUF approach. With the same level of accuracy achieved, 1D CUF beam elements require far less number of Degrees of Freedom (DoFs) compared to a 3D solid FE solution.

  • The Soowang Au-Ag deposits occur as quartz veins which filled fissures in middle Cretaceous porphyritic granite an/or gneiss of the Precambrian Sobaegsan gneiss complex. The paragenetic studies suggest that vein filling can be divided into four identifiable stages (I to IV). Stage I is the main sulfide stage, characterized by the deposition of base-metal sulfide and minor electrum. Stage II is the electrum stage, whereas stage III represents a period of the deposition of silver-bearing sulfosalts and minor electrum. Stage IV is the post ore stage. Mineralogical and fluid inclusion evidences suggest that mineralization of the Soowang deposits were deposited by the cooling of the fluids from initial high temperatures 300$^{\circ}C$ to later low temperatures 150$^{\circ}C$. The salinity of the fluids were moderate, ranging from 10.4wt.% equivalent NaCl in sphalerite to 3.1wt.% equivalent NaCl in barite. The gold-silver mineralization of the Soowang mine occurred at temperatures between 140 and 250$^{\circ}C$ from fluids with log $fs_2$ from -12 to -18 atm. A consideration of the pressure regime during ore deposition, based on the fluid inclusion evidence of boiling, suggests lithostatic pressure of less than 210 bars. This pressure condition indicates that vein system of the Soowang deposit formed at depth around 800 m below the surface at the time of gold-silver mineralization.

  • The early Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor(SeaWiFS) atmospheric correction algorithm which is the basis of the atmospheric correction algorithm for Geostationary Ocean Color Imager(GOCI) assumes that water-leaving radiances is negligible at near-infrared(NIR) wavelengths. For this reason, all of the satellite measured radiances at the NIR wavelengths are assigned to aerosol radiances. However that assumption would cause underestimation of water-leaving radiances if it were applied to turbid Case-2 waters. To overcome this problem, Management Unit of the North Sea Mathematical Models(MUMM) atmospheric correction algorithm has been developed for turbid waters. This MUMM algorithm introduces new parameter ${\alpha}$, representing the ratio of water-leaving reflectance at the NIR wavelengths. ${\alpha}$ is calculated by statistical method and is assumed to be constant throughout the study area. Using this algorithm, we can obtain comparatively accurate water-leaving radiances in the moderately turbid waters where the NIR water-leaving reflectance is less than approximately 0.01. However, this algorithm still underestimates the water-leaving radiances at the extremely turbid water since the ratio of water-leaving radiance at two NIR wavelengths, ${\alpha}$ is changed with concentration of suspended particles. In this study, we modified the MUMM algorithm to calculate appropriate value for ${\alpha}$ using an iterative technique. As a result, the accuracy of water-leaving reflectance has been significantly improved. Specifically, the results show that the Root Mean Square Error(RMSE) of the modified MUMM algorithm was 0.002 while that of the MUMM algorithm was 0.0048.

  • Changes in lipid components of Gae-bul, Urechis unicinctus, during hot-air drying ($40^{\circ}C$, 7 hrs) were studied. Raw sample contained 1.3% total lipid (TL) which consisted of 35.1% neutral lipid (NL), 18.0% glycolipid (GL) and 46.9% phospholipid (PL), and dried sample contained 5.3% TL which consisted of 51.8% NL, 20.5%GL and 27.7% PL. There were about 40% decrease in PL content and a slight increase in NL content during drying. The NL of raw sample mainly consists of triglyceride (TG, 39.8%), free sterol (FS, 39.6%), free fatty acid (FFA, 12.2%). and also identified diglyceride (DG), monoglyceride and esterified sterol and hydrocarbon in less quantify. The percent of TG and FS decreased, while that of FFA and DG increased during drying. And main components in the PL were phosphatidyl choline (PC,45.6%), phosphatidyl ethanolamine (PE,34.8%), and followed by phosphatidyl serine (PS) and an unknown substance. In the components of PL, PE, PS and PC decreased slightly in order during drying. And major fatty acids of raw and dried samples were generally 16:0, 18: 1, 18:3, and 20:5. The content of the polyenoic acid such as 20:5 decreased. while the saturated acid increased slightly during drying.

  • The strain characteristics of a fiber optic Fabry-Perot pressure sensor with high sensitivity using a $Si_{3}N_{4}/SiO_{2}/Si_{3}N_{4}$ (N/O/N) diaphragm is experimentally investigated. A 600 nm thick N/O/N diaphragm was fabricated by silicon anisotropic etching technology in 44 wt% KOH solution. An interferometric fiber optic pressure sensor has been manufactured by using a fiber optic Fabry-Perot intereferometer and a N/O/N diaphragm. The 2 cm length fiber optic Fabry-Perot interferometers in the continuous length of single mode fiber were produced with two pieces of single mode fiber coated with $TiO_{2}$ dielectric film utilizing the fusion splicing technique. The one end of the fiber optic Fabry-Perot interferometer was bonded to a N/O/N diaphragm. and the other end was connected to an optical setup through a 3 dB coupler. For the N/O/N diaphragm sized $2{\times}2\;mm^{2}$ and $8{\times}8\;mm^{2}$, the pressure sensitivity was measured 0.11 rad/kPa and 1.57 rad/kPa, respectively, and both of the nonlinearities were less than 0.2% FS.

  • In this study, aluminum lathe waste was used by replacing aggregates in certain proportions in order to obtain expansive concrete using recycled materials. For this reason, five different aluminum wastes of 1%, 2%, 3%, 4% and 5% were selected and also reference without aluminum waste was produced. Based on the mechanical tests conducted, which included slump, compression, splitting tensile, and flexural tests, it was evident that the workability of the material declined dramatically once the volume ratio of aluminum exceeded 2%. As determined by the compressive strength test (CST), the CS of concrete (1% aluminum lathe wastes replaced with aggregate) was 11% reducer than that of reference concrete. It was noted that the reference concrete's CS values, which did not include aluminum waste, were greater than those of the concrete that contained 5% aluminum. When comparing for splitting tensile strength (STS), it was observed that the results of STS generally follow the parallel inclination as the CS. The reduction in these strengths when 1% aluminum is utilized is less than 10%. These ratios modified 18% when flexural strength (FS) is considered. Therefore, 1% of aluminum waste is recommended to obtain expansive concrete with recycled materials considering minimum loss of strength. Moreover, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analysis was performed and the results also confirm that there was expansion in the aluminum added concrete. The presence of pores throughout the concrete leads to the formation of gaps, resulting in its expansion. Additionally, for practical applications, basic equations were developed to forecast the CS, STS, and FS of the concrete with aluminum lathe waste using the data already available in the literature and the findings of the current study. In conclusion, this study establishes that aluminum lathe wastes are suitable, readily available in significant quantities, locally sourced eco-materials, cost-effective, and might be selected for construction using concrete, striking a balance among financially and ecological considerations.

  • Correlation between chlorophyll a in the East China Sea and spectral bands (412, 443, 490, (510), 555, (676, 765)nm) of Ocean Scanning Multi-Spectral Imager (OSMI) including the profile multi-spectral radiometer (PRR-800) was studied. The values of remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) at the bands corresponding to the field chlorophyll $\alpha$ in the East China Sea were much higher than those in clear waters off California, USA. In case of the particle absorptions related to the chlorophyll a concentration at the spectral bands (440, 670nm) were much higher in the East China Sea than the ones in the clean waters off California. The normalized water leaving radiances (nLw) at 412, 443, 490, 555 nm of OSMI and the field chlorophyll a in the East China Sea were correlated each other. According to the results, the relationship between field chlorophyll $\alpha$ and nLw 410 nm in OSMI bands was the lowest, whereas that between field chlorophyll a and nLw 555 nm in the bands was the highest. Reciprocal action between the field chlorophyll a and the band ratio of the OSMI bands (nLw410/nLw555, nLw443/nLw555, nLw490/nLw555) was also studied. Relationship between the chlorophyll $\alpha$ and the band ratio (nLw490/nLw555) was highest in the OSMI bands. Relationship between the chlorophyll $\alpha$ and the ratio (nLw490/nLw555) was higher than one in the nLw410/nLw555. The difference in the estimated chlorophyll $\alpha$ (mg/m$^3$) between OSMI and SeaWiFS (Sea Viewing Wide Field-of-View Sensor) at the special observing stations in the northern eastern sea of Jeju Island in February 25, 2002 was about less than 0.3 mg/m$^3$ within 3 hours. It is suggested that OC2 (ocean color chlorophyll 2 algorithm) be used to get much better estimation of chlorophyll $\alpha$ from OSMI than the ones from the updated algorithms as OC4.

  • A return-to-zero (RZ) digital-to-analog converter (DAC) with a tri-state switching scheme is proposed in this paper. The proposed scheme provides a triple weight output for RZ operation by using a conventional differential current switch and simple pseudo-differential F/Fs. The RZ function is realized with only two additional transistors in each F/F cell, which results in a power dissipation increase of less than 5%. To verify the performance of the proposed method, a 10-bit RZ DAC is fabricated using standard 180-nm CMOS technology. Measured results show that the worst SFDR performances are 60 dBc and 55 dBc in the 1st and 2nd Nyquist bands, respectively, when operating at 650 MHz clock frequency. The total power consumption is 64 mW, and the active area occupies $0.25mm^2$.
