  • The spherical glasses lenses are typically classified into two groups such as (+) diopter lens and (-) diopter lens by the refractive power index. The thermal deformation of a lens is occurred by external heat source and is changed respected to the diopter of a lens. In this paper, the thermal deformation of spherical glasses lenses were quantitatively measured by using ESPI (electronic speckle pattern interferometry) which has an advantage that the non-contact, non-destructive and precise deformation measurement is available due to the coherency characteristic. The temperature changes were measured by IR camera. It makes experiments over 14 types of the plastic glasses lenses. From the results, it was confirmed that the larger diopter lens showed the less thermal deformation in case of the (+) diopter lens. On the other hand, the thermal deformation of the (-) diopter lens was measured with uniform pattern when the same temperature changes were applied. Also, it was found that the thermnal deformation of the (+) diopter lens is less than that of the (-) diopter lens. Therefore, it is expected that when the thermal deformation is occurred to the various types of the lens, the variation of the focal length caused by the thermal distortion of a lens would be measured quantitatively.

  • Physiological accommodation in aphakia has been reported 0.50D. Also, accommodation appears in pseudo-crystalline lens. However accommodation was not clear how to works in the eyes. Therefore, the purpose of this study is that accommodation has been affected to changes of axial length and corneal refractive power when the accommodative stimulus was taken 10 diopters to person who has pseudo-crystalline lens. To determine of the accommodative response of pseudo-phakic patients who had no side effects over 2 months, we have measured the axial length, corneal refractive power in 48 patients(96 eyes). When the accommodative stimulus was taken about 10 diopters, the axial length increased by $0.05{\pm}0.06mm$ and corneal refractive power increased $0.04{\pm}0.24$ diopter. The changes of axial length in the myopia was increased by $0.19{\pm}0.18D$, emmetropia was increased by $0.12{\pm}0.16D$ and hyperopia was $0.10{\pm}0.19D$. The results of measurement revealed that the mean value was increased $0.03{\pm}0.13D$ in the myopia, and increased $0.21{\pm}0.13D$ in the emmetropia, and decreased $0.02{\pm}0.34D$ in the hyperopia.

  • Purpose. The actual status of wearing toric soft contact lenses was investigated to learn why it is not used although it is required. Materials and Methods. This study has studied 64 contact lens wearing the local college students, Gyeongsangnam-do who are 20.17(${\pm}0.70$)years old, by measuring their refractive power and over-refractive power with auto refractometer(HRK-8000A, Huvitz, Korea). In addition to that, a survey was done to figure out why they do not wear toric soft contact lenses, the purpose of using toric soft contact lenses, whether they have astigmatism or any knowledge about it, the kinds of contact lens, whether they are willing to buy corrective lenses, and how they are satisfied after purchasing them. Results. 17 students (21.9%) said they experienced light-spread; 9 students (14.1%)said that they have dizziness when they wear contact lens all day long. In the survey to see whether they had astigmatism or not, 37 students (57.8%) said they had it. For the reason they do not wear toric soft contact lenses, 33 students (51.6%) said that "they were prescribed regardless of astigmatism in the optometrist." To the question asking if they are willing to buy toric soft contact lenses according to the existence of astigmatism, 51 students (79.6%) answered they are. 31 students (48.4%) said they heard a description about astigmatism at the time of purchase for contact lens. Conclusion. As the ways for any people who need to correct astigmatism to wear corrective lens, enough education about astigmatism and consistent follow-up management are needed, where the role of optometrist is considered important.

  • Purpose: Developing a roofed Pechan prism type scope with long eye relief. Methods: To reduce the overall length and to lengthen the eye relief of scope, the objective part was designed by adopting the roofed Pechan prism and also the eyepiece part was designed by adopting the field lens with minus refractive power in front of reticle, respectively. Finally, by integrating above two parts, the roofed Pechan prism type scope with 90 mm eye relief was developed. Results: The characteristics of the developed and fabricated scope with 90 mm eye relief by integrating the objective part with the roofed Pechan prism and the eyepiece part with minus refractive power had the magnification of $+3.0{\times}$, the length from the 1st lens to the last lens of about 121 mm, the barrel diameter of 28 mm, and the effective objective-diameter of 17 mm. Also it was found that the line width of resolution was about 900 cycles/rad at the 50% MTF value criterion. Conclusions: We could design and manufacture the roofed Pechan prism type scope with 90 mm eye relief, the characteristics of which had the magnification of $3.0{\times}$, the MTF above 50% at 900 cycles/rad, and the length from the 1st lens to the last lens of about 121 mm.

  • Purpose: The changes in properties of plastic lens due to heating was investigated. Methods: Plastic lenses of -2.00 diopter were heated at 60-100$^{\circ}C$, and then changes of refractive power, surface condition and transmittance were examined. Results: It was shown that the changes of lens surface due to heating happened at 70$^{\circ}C$ for 1h, 75$^{\circ}C$ for 10 min and 100$^{\circ}C$ 10 sec, respectively. More serious crack was occurred in high index lens and at higher heating temperature, respectively, and transmittance decreased depending on the extent of the damage on the surface of lens. Conclusions: Heating at temperatures above 70$^{\circ}C$ drives cracks on the surface of lens. Optician should recommend an appropriate lens considering the wearer's working conditions and guide for paying attention when they use eyeglasses.

  • As a first step in the optical design process, we derive a recursive numerical calculation method that can give a solution to the Gaussian equation that the paraxial rays satisfy. Given the refractive power, the angle of incidence to the first principal plane of the lens, the angle of exit to the second principal plane of the lens, and the distance between the principal planes, the radii of curvature of the front and back surfaces of a lens can be obtained by applying the recursive numerical calculation method proposed in this paper according to the thickness of the lens. If a module consists of two or more lenses, the thickness and radius of curvature of each lens can be similarly determined after selecting the distance between the principal planes of the lens under the condition of the design specification while increasing the number of lenses one by one.

  • A high speed ultra-compact lens with a diffractive optical element (DOE) is designed, which can be applied to mobile communication devices such as IMT2000, PDA, notebook computer, etc. The designed hybrid lens has sufficiently high performance of less than f/2.2, compact size of 3.3 mm (1st surf. to image), and wide field angle of more than 30 deg. compared with the specifications of a single lens. By proper choice of the aspheric and DOE surface which has very large negative dispersion, we can correct chromatic and high order aberrations through the optimization technique. From Seidel third order aberration theory and Sweatt modeling, the initial data and surface configurations, that is, the combination condition of the DOE and the aspherical surface are obtained. However, due to the consideration of diffraction efficiency of a DOE, we can choose only four cases as the optimization input, and present the best solution after evaluating and comparing those four cases. On the other hand, we also report dramatic improvement in optical performance by inserting another refractive lens (so-called, field flattener), that keeps the refractive power of an original DOE lens and makes the petzval sum zero in the original DOE lens system. ystem.

  • To minimize chromatic variations across a wavelength band, we suggest a new design that corrects the first- and second-order wavelength derivatives of the refractive power. Based on this method, a diffraction-limited collimator is designed. The design is very stable against wavelength change, as expected. The chromatic change of the effective focal length is less than 0.002% in the wavelength range from 360 to 410 nm.
