  • Naturally occurring coumarin compounds have received substantial attention due to their pharmaceutical effects. Esculetin is a coumarin derivative and a polyphenol compound that is used in a variety of therapeutic and pharmacological strategies. However, its effect on aldose reductase activity remains poorly understood. In this study, the potential beneficial effects of esculetin on lenticular aldose reductase were investigated in galactose-fed (GAL) rats, an animal model of sugar cataracts. Cataracts were induced in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats via a 50% galactose diet for 2 weeks, and groups of GAL rats were orally treated with esculetin (10 or 50 mg/kg body weight). In vehicle-treated GAL rats, lens opacification was observed, and swelling and membrane rupture of the lens fiber cells were increased. Additionally, aldose reductase was highly expressed in the lens epithelium and superficial cortical fibers during cataract development in the GAL rats. Esculetin reduced rat lens aldose reductase (RLAR) activity in vitro, and esculetin treatment significantly inhibited lens opacity, as well as morphological alterations, such as swelling, vacuolation and liquefaction of lens fibers, via the inhibition of aldose reductase in the GAL rats. These results indicate that esculetin is a useful treatment for galactose-induced cataracts.

  • Purpose: This review article was written to investigate what kind of forces are acting on the contact lens fitted on the cornea and its subsequent motion. Methods: A capillary action-induced force develops in the tear layer between the lens and cornea, which leads to the restoring force due to difference in layer thickness according to lens rotation. The characteristics of the lens movement can be determined by the various factors such as friction between eyelid and lens, acceleration force based on blinking and the restoring force incorporated with the viscous damping force. A mathematical model which consists of the differential equations and their numerical solution was proposed to analyze the damped motion of lenses. The model predicts the time dependence of lenses during and after the blink varying the BC, blink period and eyelid pressure. Results: It was found that both the blink period and lid pressure increases the movement increases because of the enhanced lid friction. As the BC increases the viscous damping reduces due to the lacrimal layer's increase which resulted in the enhanced lens motion. After blink the lens illustrates the damped oscillation because of the restoring force by the increased lacrimal layer thickness and reduced viscous resistance. The time for the lens to return to the equilibrium shortens as the BC increase because of the resistance reduction. Conclusions: The movement of the contact lens is governed by the characteristics of the lacrimal layer between the lens and cornea as well as the lid blink.

  • This paper presents a simple method to estimate center of distortion and correct radial distortion from fish-eye lens. If the center of image is not locate that of lens in a straight line, the disadvantage of FOV model is low accurate because of correcting distortion without estimated centre of distortion. We propose a method accurately estimating Distortion center using FOV model and 2D pattern from wide angle lens. Our method determines the center of distortion in least error between straight lines and curves with FOV model. The results of experimental measurements on synthetic and real data are presented.

  • The objective of camera calibration is to determine the internal optical characteristics of camera and 3D position and orientation of camera with respect to the real world. Calibration procedure applicable to general purpose cameras and lenses. The general method to revise the accuracy rate of calibration is using mathematical distortion of lens. The effective og calibration show big difference in proportion to distortion of camera lens. In this paper, we propose the method which calibration distortion model by using neural network. The neural network model implicity contains all the distortion model. We can predict the high accuracy of calibration method proposed in this paper. Neural network can set properly the distortion model which has difficulty to estimate exactly in general method. The performance of the proposed neural network approach is compared with the well-known Tsai's two stage method in terms of calibration errors. The results show that the proposed approach gives much more stable and acceptabke calibration error over Tsai's two stage method regardless of camera resolution and camera angle.

  • Image deblurring by a deconvolution method requires accurate knowledge of the blur kernel. Existing point spread function (PSF) models in the literature corresponding to lens aberrations and defocus are either parameterized and spatially invariant or spatially varying but discretely defined. In this paper, a parameterized model is developed and presented for a PSF which is spatially varying due to lens aberrations and defocus in an imaging system. The model is established from the Seidel third-order aberration coefficient and the Hu moment. A skew normal Gauss model is selected for parameterized PSF geometry structure. The accuracy of the model is demonstrated with simulations and measurements for a defocused infrared camera and a single spherical lens digital camera. Compared with optical software Code V, the visual results of two optical systems validate our analysis and proposed method in size, shape and direction. Quantitative evaluation results reveal the excellent accuracy of the blur kernel model.

  • This study is to present a fainting motion recognizing method by using fish-eye lens images to sense emergency situations. The camera with fish-eye lens located at the center of the ceiling of the living room sends images, and then the foreground pixels are extracted by means of the adaptive background modeling method based on the Gaussian complex model, which is followed by tracing of outer points in the foreground pixel area and the elliptical mapping. During the elliptical tracing, the fish-eye lens images are converted to fluoroscope images. the size and location changes, and moving speed information are extracted to judge whether the movement, pause, and motion are similar to fainting motion. The results show that compared to using fish-eye lens image, extraction of the size and location changes. and moving speed by means of the conversed fluoroscope images has good recognition rates.

  • In order to modify flexible mode frequencies, finite element analysis is applied for a lens-holder in pick-up actuator. Several design parameters like shape and local dimension of a lens-holder were selected adequately and sensitivities of the design variables for vibration modes were obtained by FE analysis and this result was used for updating FE model. A sensitivity matrix between the natural frequencies and the design variables was calculated by finite difference method. By comparing the calculated natural frequencies with target frequencies, modification of the design variables was acquired and used for improving FE model. Calculated natural frequencies after several iterations by FE analysis coincided with target frequencies and the errors between them were minimized.

  • Nowadays, various approaches are performed to increase the storage capacity of optical storage device. One of the promising candidates is using the high NA lens. By using high NA lens, the beam spot size can be reduced which will lead to increase the storage density. This paper proposes a double cantilever beam type bimorph PZT actuator for fine motion that can control the gap between the flexible media and optical pickup which uses high NA lens. Mathematical model is derived by using Hamilton's principle and the model is verified by finite element analysis and experiment. Position controller is designed and its performance is evaluated by experiment.

  • We introduce a new method for lens design that combines an eyepiece with the finite model eye, to make a corrected version of the accommodation-dependent Navarro eye. The optical system that we designed, which includes a human eye, takes into account the aberration of the eye and increases the performance of the image in the retina. In the design results, for the optimized eyepiece combined with the corrected Navarro eye, visual acuity is 1.40. Compared with the existing method of eyepiece design using inverse ray tracing with the corrected Navarro eye, MTF value was recorded as 0.079 to 0.283 at 160 lp/mm and visual performance was improved.

  • Even though a dual lens stereoscopic camera allows for convenient stereoscopic photography, the necessity for the research comes up, since the dual lens stereoscopic camera can cause visual discomfort during zoom-in due to the fixed convergence point. We propose a method based on which a convergence point can be adjusted to prevent visual discomfort during zoom-in for a dual lens stereoscopic camera. First, the relational model is classified into nine kinds and defined, depending on locations of focus, object, and convergence point. And then, the method to minimize visual discomfort is suggested by adjusting convergence point on the given model. We also implement the suggested methods with anaglyph computer graphic and demonstrate the superiority of them.
