  • Current discriminating technique of rice variety is known to be not objective till this time because of depending on naked eye of well trained inspector. DNA finger print method based on genetic character of rice has been indicated inappropriate for on-site application, because the method need much labor and skilled expert. The purpose of this study was to develops the identification technique of polished rice varieties using CCD camera images. To minimize the noise of the captured image, thresholding and median filtering were carried out, and edge was extracted from the image data. Image data after pretreatment of normalize and FFT(fast fourier transform) were used for library model and feedforward backpropagation neural network model. Image processing technique using CCD camera could discriminate the variety of rice with high accuracy in case of quite different rice of shape, but the accuracy was reached at 85% in the similar shape of rice.

  • Diamond shaping is one of the machining strategies to make the optical micro-groove molds, and it is especially useful when rhe component is an assembly of the linear micro-groove array. A mirror-like surface and arbitrary crose-sectional curve can be easily made by diamond. Howerver, the cutting speed of shaping is relatively lower than that of the other cutting methods, and there exist an unstable cutting conditions that generate the chatter. This study is focused on the modeling of the simplified self-induced chatter of the diamond shapping. Form the chatter model and experiments, it is found that the unstable cutting conditions exist wwhen the depth of cut is low and cutting speed is high.

  • Diamond shaping is one of the machining strategies to make the optical micro-groove molds, and it is especially useful when the component is an assembly of the linear micro-groove array. A mirrorlike surface and an arbitrary crose-sectional curve can be easily made by the diamond tool. However, the cutting speed of shaping is relatively lower than that of the other cutting methods, and there exist an unstable cutting conditions that generate the chatter. This study is focused on the modeling of the simplified self-induced chatter of the diamond shaping, and the machinabilities of three materials are compared by cutting experiments. From the chatter model and experiments, it is found that the unstable cutting conditions exist when the depth of cut is low and cutting speed is high. It is also found that the brass is relatively good material in micro shaping than copper or aluminium from the cutting experiments.

  • In this paper, we propose a fake iris detection method that combines the optical and textural features of the human eye. To extract the optical features, we used dual Purkinje images that were generated on the anterior cornea and the posterior lens surfaces based on an analytic model of the human eye's optical structure. To extract the textural features, we measured the amount of change in a given iris pattern (based on wavelet decomposition) with regard to the direction of illumination. This method performs the following two procedures over previous researches. First, in order to obtain the optical and textural features simultaneously, we used five illuminators. Second, in order to improve fake iris detection performance, we used a SVM (Support Vector Machine) to combine the optical and textural features. Through combining the features, problems of single feature based previous works could be solved. Experimental results showed that the EER (Equal Error Rate) was 0.133%.

  • In this paper, a method is proposed for simultaneously measuring the front and back surface profiles of transparent micro-optical components. The proposed method combines a dual-wavelength digital holographic microscope with liquids to record holograms at different wavelengths, and then numerically reconstructs the three-dimensional phase information to image the front and back sides of the sample. A theoretical model is proposed to determine the surface information, and imaging of an achromatic lens is demonstrated experimentally. Unlike conventional interferometry, our proposed method supports nondestructive measurement and direct observation of both front and back profiles of micro-optical elements.

  • A new multi-frequency fringe projection method is proposed to reduce the nonlinear phase error in 3-D shape measurements using an adaptive compensation method. The phase error of the traditional fringe projection technique originates from various sources such as lens distortion, the nonlinear imaging system and a nonsinusoidal fringe pattern that can be very difficult to model. Inherent possibility of phase error appearing hinders one from accurate 3-D reconstruction. In this work, an adaptive compensation algorithm is introduced to reduce adaptively the phase error resulting from the fringe projection profilometry. Three different frequencies are used for generating the gratings of projector and conveyed to the four-step phase-shifting procedure to measure the objects of very discontinuous surfaces. The 3-D shape results show that this proposed technique succeeds in reconstructing the 3-D shape of any type of objects.

  • As high quality image is required for digital cameras in recent use, the image stabilization technique has drawn much attention to prevent image degradation from shaky disturbance by users. In this paper, the optical image stabilization (OIS) system for DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera is considered. First, the analytic model of an OIS system is presented to demonstrate the mechanism of image destabilization due to unknown disturbance that causes blurry images on CCD sensor. Then, to enhance the stabilization performance, a sliding mode control based on the min-max nonlinear control is introduced. Through the experiments and simulations, the effectiveness of the proposed method will be verified.

  • In this paper, the geometrical properties of the optical system for Head Mounted Display (HMD) were investigated. Also, this work deals with the concept for an optical system design bated on Diffractive Optical Elements (DOE). In designing the optical system for HMD, it is considered that the optical system should have compact, high performance, and comfortable properties while user sees the picture. In order to satisfy these requirements, we applied DOE and aspheric surfaces to the lens so that correction of color and monochromatic aberrations could be obtained. Also, the design and evaluation for the optical system were carried out using the generalized model of the human eye. Finally, it was expected to fulfill all the requirements of an HMD system.
