The effect of rotation on the discharge coefficient of orifices with various length-to-diameter ratios and two different inlet corner radii was studied. Length-to-diameter ratios of the orifices range from 0.2 to 10, while the inlet shapes are square edged, or round edges of radius-to-diameter ratio of 0.5. From the experiment, we found that rotational discharge coefficient and Rotation number, when based on ideal exit velocity of the orifice considering momentum transfer from the rotor, describe the effect of rotation very well. In this study, the discharge coefficients of rotating orifices are shown to behave similar to those of the well-known non-rotating orifices. For both rotating and non-rotating orifices, the discharge coefficients increase with the length-to-diameter ratio until a maximum is reached. The flow reattachments in the relatively short orifices are responsible for the increase. The coefficient then decreases with the length-to-diameter ratio due to the friction loss along the orifice bore. The length-to-diameter ratio that yields maximum discharge coefficient, however, increases with the Rotation number because the increased flow-approaching angle requires larger length-to-diameter ratio for complete reattachment. The length-to-diameter ratio for complete reattachment is shorter for round edged orifices than that of square edged orifices by about a unit length-to-diameter ratio.
Sixty four tests were performed in a steel tank to investigate the axial responses of piles driven into organic soil prepared at two different densities using a drop hammer. Four different pile materials were used: wood, steel, smooth concrete, and rough concrete, with different length to diameter ratios. The results of the load tests showed that the shaft load capacity of rough concrete piles continuously increased with pile settlement. In contrast, the others pile types reached the ultimate shaft resistance at a settlement equal to about 10% of the pile diameter. The ratios of base to shaft capacities of the piles were found to vary with the length to diameter ratio, surface roughness, and the density of the organic soil. The ultimate unit shaft resistance of the rough concrete pile was always greater than that of other piles irrespective of soil condition and pile length. However, the ultimate base resistance of all piles was approximately close to each other.

In this paper, Timoshenko-beam model is developed for the vibration of double carbon nanotubes. The resulting frequencies are gained for axial wave mode and length-to-diameter ratios. The natural frequency becomes more prominent for lower length-to-diameter ratios and diminished for higher ratios. The converse behavior is observed for axial wave mode with clamped-clamped and clamped-free boundary conditions. The frequencies of clamped-free are lower than that of clamped-clamped boundary condition. The eigen solution is obtained to extract the frequencies of double walled carbon nanotubes using Galerkin's method through axial deformation function. Computer softer MATLAB is used for formation of frequency values. The frequency data is compared with available literature and found to be in agreement.

In many applications like the aircraft or the rockets/missiles, the flow from a nozzle needs to be expanded suddenly in an enlarged duct of larger diameter. The enlarged duct is provided after the nozzle to maximize the thrust created by the flow from the nozzle. When the fluid is suddenly expanded in an enlarged duct, the base pressure is generally lower than the atmospheric pressure, which results in base drag. The objective of this research work is to optimize the length to diameter (L/D) ratio of the enlarged duct using the CFD analysis in the flow field from the supersonic nozzle. The flow from the nozzle drained in an enlarged duct, the thrust, and the base pressure are studied. The Mach numbers for the study were 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5. The nozzle pressure ratios (NPR) of the study were 2, 5 and 8. The L/D ratios of the study were 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Based on the results, it is concluded that the L/D ratio should be increased to an optimum value to reattach the flow to an enlarged duct and to increase the thrust. The supersonic suddenly expanded flow field is wave dominant, and the results cannot be generalized. The optimized L/D ratios for various combinations of flow and geometrical parameters are given in the conclusion section.
The aluminum 7075-T6 is known as an alloy widely used in aircraft structural applications, which does not exhibit strain rate sensitivity during dynamic compressive tests. Despite mechanical importance of the material, there is not enough attention to determine appropriate sample dimensions such as a sample diameter relative to the device bar diameter and sample length to diameter (L/D) ratio for dynamic tests and how these two parameters can change mechanical behaviors of the sample under dynamic loading condition. In this study, various samples which have different diameters of 31.8, 25.4, 15.9, and 9.5 mm and sample L/D ratios of 2.0, 1.5, 1.0, 0.5, and 0.25 were tested using Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB), as this testing device is proper to characterize mechanical behaviors of solid materials at high strain rates. The mechanical behavior of this alloy was examined under ${\sim}200-5,500s^{-1}$ dynamic strain rate. Aluminum samples of 2.0, 1.5 and 1.0 of L/D ratios were well fitted into the stress-strain curve, Madison and Green's diagram, regardless of the sample diameters. Also, the 0.5 and 0.25 L/D ratio samples having the diameter of 31.8 and 25.4 mm followed the stress-strain curve. As results, larger samples (31.8 and 25.4 mm) in diameters followed the stress-strain curve regardless of the L/D ratios, whereas the 0.5 and 0.25 L/D ratios of small diameter sample (15.9 and 9.5 mm) did not follow the stress-strain diagram but significantly deviate from the diagram. Our results indicate that the L/D ratio is important determinant in stress-strain responses under the SHPB test when the sample diameter is small relative to the test bar diameter (31.8 mm), but when sample diameter is close to the bar diameter, L/D ratio does not significantly affect the stress-strain responses. This suggests that the areal mismatch (non-contact area of the testing bar) between the sample and the bar can misrepresent mechanical behaviors of the aluminum 7075-T6 at the dynamic loading condition.
Effects of a length-to-diameter ratio, L/D, on the three-dimensional flow and aerodynamic loss within an injection hole, which is normally oriented to the mainflow, have been investigated by using a straight five-hole probe. The length-to-diameter ratio of the injection hole is varied to be 0.5 and 2.0 for blowing ratios of 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0. Regardless of the blowing ratio, flows within the hole and at the jet exit are strongly affected by the length-to-diameter ratio. In the case of L/D=0.5, the inside flow is considerably influenced by the mainflow, and the exit flow variation is found to be the greatest. The aerodynamic loss in this case is usually attributed to jet -mainflow interactions. In the case of L/D=2.0, the flow separation and reattachment in the inlet region are completely separated from the complicated exit flow, and the aerodynamic-loss production is mainly due to the inlet flow separation.
A parametric study has been conducted to investigate the effect of the geometry on the strength of an unidirectional and fabric hybrid laminated composite joint. Tests are conducted for the specimens with nine different edge-to-hole diameter or width-to-hole diameter ratios. For the finite element analysis, the characteristic length method is used, and the tests for determining the characteristic length are performed additionally. Nonlinear contact problem between the pin and laminate is modeled by the gap element in MSC/NASTRAN. Tsai-Wu failure criteria is applied to the stress on the characteristic curve. The finite element and experimental results shows good agreement in strength of composite joint. Results of the parametric study shows the effect of the geometry is remarkable in the specimens with width-to-hole diameter ratio less than 2.8 and edge-to-hole diameter ratio less than 1.4.

On the basis of Flügge shell theory, the vibrations of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are investigated. The structure of armchair single walled carbon nanotubes are used here. Influences of length-to-diameter ratios and the two boundary conditions on the natural frequencies of armchair SWCNTs are examined. The Rayleigh-Ritz method is employed to determine eigen frequencies for single walled carbon nanotubes. The solution is obtained using the geometric characteristics and boundary conditions for natural frequencies of SWCNTs. The natural frequencies decrease as ratio of length to diameter increase and the effect of frequencies is less significant and more prominent for long tube. To assess the frequency confirmation carried out in this paper are compared with the earlier computations.
Breakup lengths of circular and elliptical liquid jets in a subsonic crossflow were experimentally studied. Two circular-shaped and four elliptical-shaped plain-orifice injectors, which had different aspect ratios and orifice length to diameter ratios, were used to provide various liquid jet conditions such as steady, cavitation, and hydraulic flip. By varying the injection pressure drop from 1 bar to 6 bar, spray images were taken using a shadowgraph technique. Breakup lengths were measured and analyzed. As the aspect ratio in orifices increased, liquid column breakup lengths normalized by the equivalent diameter were reduced irrespectively of the switching of the major or minor axis to the crossflow. It was also found that when hydraulic flip developed inside the orifice, x-directional breakup lengths more decreased for both circular and elliptical liquid jets.
