  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of visual biofeedback methods utilizing pressure sensors on the static balance of stroke patients. Design: Randomized crossover study. Methods: A total of 27 patients with hemiparesis participated in this study. The following three feedback conditions were considered: condition 1 (Knowledge of performance feedback), condition 2 (Knowledge of result feedback), and condition 3 (None feedback). A force plate was used to measure static balance. The total sway length, average sway velocity, x-axis excursion, and y-axis excursion of the center of pressure were measured. One-way repeated-measures analysis of variance was employed for comparisons of variables between each condition. The statistical significance level was set at α = 0.05 for all analyses. Results: There was a significant difference in the static balance results between each feedback condition (p<0.05). In the post-hoc results, it was confirmed that the static balance was significant in the order of knowledge of performance feedback, knowledge of result feedback, and none feedback. Conclusions: When comparing the three conditions, it was observed that knowledge of performance feedback showed the most improved effect on static balance ability. As further research progresses, that this approach could be used as an effective intervention method in clinical settings.

  • Le Fort 1 osteotomy or maxillary advancement with distraction osteogenesis (DO) is main treatment strategy for cleft palate patients with maxillary hypoplasia. Maxillary DO allows greater maxillary advancement within physiological limit than Le Fort 1 osteotomy. Moreover, it is better for velopharyngeal function. However, there is a greater tendency for an increase in nasal sound when maxilla is advanced excessively. Therefore, the advancement of anterior maxillary segment using DO has been utilized. It offers advantages such as an increase in the length of the palate, a prevention of the change in palatopharyngeal depth, and a preservation of the velopharyngeal function. Moreover, it will obliterate the necessity of bone graft, and it prevents the occurrence of oronasal or oroantral fistula. Finally, it stimulates the regeneration of the soft and hard tissue of alveolus, and subsequently makes possible to place implant.

  • Hydrodynamic characteristic of surfactant drag-reducing flows is still not fully understood. This work investigated the temperature and diameter effect on hydrodynamic characteristic of cationic surfactant drag reducing flows in pipes. Solution of oleyl bishydroxyethyl methyl ammonium chloride (Ethoquad O/12), 900 ppm, as a cationic surfactant and sodium salicylate (NaSal), 540 ppm, as a counter-ion was tested at 12, 25, 40, and $50^{\circ}C$ in pipes with diameter of 13, 25, and 40 mm. Drag reduction effectiveness of this surfactant solution was evaluated in 25 mm pipe from 6 to $75^{\circ}C$. Rheological characteristic of this solution was measured by stress control type rheometer with cone-and-plate geometry. Scale-up laws proposed by previous investigators were used to evaluate the flow characteristic of the solution. It was found that this surfactant solution has clear DR capability until $70^{\circ}C$. Result of this work suggested that temperature has a significant influence in changing the hydrodynamic entrance length of surfactant drag reducing flows. From rheological measurement, it was found that the solution exhibits Shear Induced Structure at all temperatures with different degree of peak viscosity and critical shear rate.

  • Shear lag phenomenon has long been considered in numerous structural codes; however, the AISC provisions have now no longer proposed any unique equation to calculate the shear lag ratio in bolted connections for angles in general. It is noticeable that, however, codes used in this case are largely conservative and need to be amended. A parametric study consisting of 27 angle sections with equal legs and different with bolted connections was performed to investigate the effects of shear lag on the ultimate tensile capacity of angle members. The main parameters were: steel grade, connection length and eccentricity from the center of the plate, as well as the number of rows of bolts parallel to the applied force. The test results were compared with the predictions of the classical 1-x/l law proposed by Mons and Chesen to investigate its application to quantify the effect of shear lag. A parametric study was performed using valid FE models that cover a wide range of parameters. Finally, based on the numerical results, design considerations were proposed to quantify the effect of shear lag on the ultimate tensile capacity of the tensile members.

  • Blast resistant gates are required to be lightweight and able to mitigate extreme loading effect. This may be achieved through innovative design of a gate and its supporting frame. The first is well covered in literature while the latter is often overlooked. The design of supporting frame depends mainly on the boundary conditions and corresponding reaction forces. The later states the novelty and the aim of this paper, namely, the analysis of reaction forces in supporting structure of rectangular steel gates subjected to "far-field explosions". Flat steel plate was used as simplified gate structure, since the focus was on reaction forces rather than behaviour of gate itself. The analyses include both static and dynamic cases using analytical and numerical methods to emphasize the difference between both approaches, and provide some practical hints for engineers. The comprehensive study of reaction forces presented here, cover four different boundary conditions and three length to width ratios. Moreover, the effect of explosive charge and stand-off distance on reaction forces was also covered. The analyses presented can be used for a future design of a possible "blast absorbing supporting frame" which will increase the absorbing properties of the gate. This in return, may lead to lighter and more operational blast resistant gates.

  • As the requirement of high-rise buildings in big cities increases, steel structural system becomes more popular in spite of the relatively higher material cost compared to that of the concrete structural system. Most of the steel structure adopts metal deck floor system because of the easiness in construction. However, the metal deck floor system has a weakness on vibration which became very important factor in office buildings, hotels and residential buildings as the more sensitive machines being used. Therefore, most, of the building codes in many countries restrict the natural frequency of the each floor should be higher than or equal to 15 Hz. Floor vibration of the KEM deck composite floor system which has been , developed recently from the engineers and scientists in Korea was measured. Also, the simplified analytical derivation of natural frequency for each floor was studied according to the measured natural frequency for each different boundary condition of the floor. As the length of the slab gets bigger, the natural frequency of the slab becomes lower even though the structural designer still considers it as a one-way slab.

  • The perfobond connector, composed of a steel plate with a number of holes, serves as a certain type of shear connector in steel and concrete composite structures. Depending on limits in hole distances and rib heights, various hole shapes including circular-hole and long-hole are alternatives for perfobond connectors. This study presented the results of tests performed on 72 push-out specimens with perfobond connectors. The purpose was to evaluate the shear strength of perfobond connectors with circular-hole and long-hole. The effects of various parameters were investigated, including the hole diameter, the hole length, the hole height, the concrete strength, the existence, diameter and strength of rebar in the hole, the thickness, height and distance of perfobond ribs, and the thickness of concrete slabs. On the basis of 132 push-out test results in references and in this study, an analytical model was proposed by regression analysis to predict the shear strength of perfobond connectors. The proposed equation agreed reasonably well with the experimental results of perfobond connectors with different hole shapes.

  • Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of postoperative radiotherapy for the treatment of keloid scars administered immediately after Cesarean section. Materials and Methods: A total of 26 postpartum patients with confirmed keloids resulting from previous Cesarean sections received either 12 or 15 Gy radiotherapy. The radiotherapy was divided into three 6 MeV electron beam fractions administered during the postpartum period immediately following the final Cesarean section. To evaluate ovarian safety, designated doses of radiation were estimated at the calculated depth of the ovaries using a solid plate phantom and an ionization chamber with the same lead cutout as was used for the treatment of Cesarean section operative scars and a tissue equivalent bolus. Results: In total, the control rate was 77% (20 patients), while six (23%) developed focally elevated keloids (ranging from 0.5 to 2 cm in length) in the middle of the primary abdominal scar. Five patients experienced mild hyperpigmentation. Nonetheless, most patients (96%) were satisfied with the treatment results. The estimated percentage of the applied radiation doses that reached the calculated depth of the ovaries ranged from 0.0033% to 0.0062%. Conclusion: When administered during the immediate postpartum period, postoperative electron beam radiotherapy for repeated Cesarean section scars is generally safe and produces good cosmetic results with minimal toxicity.

  • The shell and tube heat exchangers were introduced to apply to a big capacity condenser and a high pressure feed water heater for power plant in the beginning of 1990s. Design and manufacturing technology fur shell and tube heat exchangers have been developed until now. But it is very difficult to calculate the expected performance characteristics of the shell and tube heat exchanger, because there are many design parameters to be considered according to internal structure and the shell side heat transfer mechanism complicately related to the design parameters. Design parameters to be considered in the design stage of shell and tube heat exchanger are shell and tube side fluids, flow rate, inlet and outlet temperature, physical properties, type of heat exchanger, outer diameter, thickness, length of tube, tube arrangement, tube pitch, permissive pressure loss on both sides, type of baffle plate, baffle cutting ratio. The propose of study is an analysis TEMA(Tubular Exchanger Manufacturers Association) E shell and tube heat exchanger performance with changing a number of baffles(3, 5, 7, 9, 11) and tubes(16, 20) and determined optimal baffle spacing.
