  • In this paper, a new type blow head was developed and pneumatic application system was evaluated. The blow head had one operating factor, inserting length of collecting plate, that was directly related to discharge rate and application pattern. To determine Proper blow head arrangement and application height, a blow head set was tested. Three-way ANOVA was conducted to investigate relationships between CV value, the discharge rate and inserting length of collecting plate. The discharge rate and inserting length of collecting plate were statistically significant at p=0.01, affecting uniformity of application pattern. The best CV value among the application tests was 23.3% when the application rate and application height was 23.5 g/sec and 80 cm respectively. The worst CV value was 63.3% in 111.4 g/sec. Therefore, it is necessary to increase number of blow head in a section of the boom in improve application uniformity.

  • Surface defects in structural members are apt to be origins of fatigue cracks growth, which may cause serious failure of whole structures. Most structure has a part where stress concentrates such as welded joints, corner parts, etc. And then, analysis on crack growth and penetration from these defects, therefore, is one of the most important subjects for the reliability of LBB design. The present paper has performed an experimental and analysis on the fatigue crack propagation by variety in crack length of surface cracked plate with stress concentration part. The crack growth behavior can be explained quantitatively by using Newman-Raju equation and the stress partitioning method proposed by ASME B&P Code Sec. XI. The stress concentration factor $K_t$ has affected on the crack growth. The crack growth after penetration depends upon the initial front side crack length.

  • This paper investigates the characteristics of deflection for circular plate that has same supporting condition along the width direction of plate according to the area change of supporting end. For two boundary conditions such as simple supporting and clamping on both ends, this study derives maximum deflection formula of circular plate using differential equation of elastic curve, assuming that a circular plate is a beam with different widths along the longitudinal direction. The deflection formula of circular plate is verified by carrying out finite element analysis with regard to the ratio of length of supporting part to radius of circular plate.

  • Objectives We aimed to identify the effectiveness of photobiomodulation using low level laser therapy (LLLT), light emitting diode (LED) and others on the growth of the length of the growth plate by reviewing literatures. Methods We searched literatures using PubMed, Science Direct, CINAHL, Korea Traditional Knowledge Portal (KTKP), Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System (OASIS), China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database (CNKI), Japan Science and Technology Information Aggregator, Electronic (J STAGE), and Japan National Institute of Informatics Scholarly and Academic Information Navigator (CiNii) using the keywords "Growth plate" "Epiphyseal growth" "Epiphyseal plate" and "Laser", "light emitting diode (LED)", "near-infrared light", and "photobiomodulation". Search range included only original article which provided English abstract were selected. The search strategy contained no language limitation. Results A total 556 studies were found. Then, 551 were excluded by scanning titles and abstracts and finally 5 articles were selected. Five articles were RCTs using rodents. Two of the 5 articles used InGaAlP Laser (630-685 nm), and the other 3 articles used GaAlAs Laser (780, 820, and 870 nm) to investigated the effects of LLLT on the growth of the length of the epiphyseal cartilage and the number of chondrocytes and thickness of each zone of the epiphyseal cartilage. Two articles concluded that LLLT had a beneficial effect on the longitudinal growth of the growth plate. In growth of the epiphyseal plate, there were no significant differences in others. Conclusions It is might that LLLT influenced on the growth of epiphyseal plate by positive affect. However, further rigorous RCTs are warranted.

  • This paper presents a theoretical and finite element (FE) study on the stress intensity factors of double-edged cracked steel beams strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) plates. By simplifying the tension flange of the steel beam using a steel plate in tension, the solutions obtained for the stress intensity factors of the double-edged cracked steel plate strengthened with CFRP plates were used to evaluate those of the steel beam specimens. The correction factor α1 was modified based on the transformed section method, and an additional correction factor φ was introduced into the expressions. Three-dimensional FE modeling was conducted to calculate the stress intensity factors. Numerous combinations of the specimen geometry, crack length, CFRP thickness and Young's modulus, adhesive thickness and shear modulus were analyzed. The numerical results were used to investigate the variations in the stress intensity factor and the additional correction factor φ. The proposed expressions are a function of applied stress, crack length, the ratio between the crack length and half the width of the tension flange, the stiffness ratio between the CFRP plate and tension flange, adhesive shear modulus and thickness. Finally, the proposed expressions were verified by comparing the theoretical and numerical results.

  • Recently, experimental and analytical researches have been performed in order to find interface failure between FRP plate and concrete in near surface-mounted (NSM) retrofit using FRP plate. As a result, it was found that the bond strength between concrete and NSM FRP plate had a close relationship with shape of FRP, concrete compressive strength and bond length. However, research need is increasing about another factors such as suitable space of FRP plate and group effect. In this study, therefore, a bond test was performed with aforementioned factors and compared with a previous equation to verify its suitability for predicting bond strength of NSM FRP plate. From the test, it was found that the bond strength increased according to the increase of space of NSM FRP plates even if its bond length was same. The splitting failure of concrete governed when space of FRPs was too narrow and it changed to FRP's tensile failure with increase of the space. From the evaluation of test specimens using previous equation, it was found that the bond strength could be predicted properly with consideration of group effect.

  • Shielding the air-gap magnetic field of the electrodynamic wheel below a conductive plate and opening the shielding plate partially, a thrust force and a normal force generate on the conductive plate at the open area. But, as only the variable controlling both forces is a rotating speed of the electrodynamic wheel, it is very difficult to control the forces independently by the speed. So, we discuss a novel method controlling the forces effectively through manipulating a size of the open area. The independent control is made possible by virtue of the feature that the relative ratio between both forces is irrelevant to an air-gap length and determined uniquely for a specific rotating speed of the wheel. Therefore, the rotating speed and the size of open area become new control variables. The feasibility of the method is verified experimentally. Specially, the controllable magnetic forces are used in a noncontact conveyance of the conductive plate.

  • In the present analysis, the spline finite strip with higher-order shear deformation is formulated for the static analysis of piezoelectric composite plates. The proposed method incorporates Reddy's third-order shear deformation theory, Touratier's "Sine" model, Afaq's exponential model, Cho's higher-order zigzag laminate theory, as well as the classic plate theory and the first-order plate theory. Thus, the analysis can be conducted based on any of the above-mentioned theories. The selection of a specific method is done by simply changing a few terms in a 2 by 2 square matrix and the results, obtained according to different plate theories, can be compared to each other. Numerical examples are presented for piezoelectric composite plates subjected to mechanical loading. The results based on different shear deformation theories are compared with the three-dimensional solutions. The behaviours of piezoelectric composite plates with different length-to-thickness ratios, fibre orientations, and boundary conditions are also investigated in these examples.

  • Background: A precontoured plate rarely fits properly within the patient's clavicle and must be bent intraoperatively. This study aimed to determine whether anatomical reduction could be achieved using a plate bent before surgery. Methods: This study included 87 consecutive patients with displaced mid-shaft clavicle fractures who underwent plate fixation and were followed-up for a minimum of 1 year. After exclusions, 39 consecutive patients underwent fixation with a precontoured plate bent intraoperatively (intraoperative bending group), and 28 underwent fixation with the plate bent preoperatively (preoperative bending group). Using free software and a three-dimensional (3D) printer, ipsilateral clavicle 3D-printed models were constructed. Using plain radiographs, the distance between the edge of the lateral inferior cortex and the medial inferior cortex was measured. The angle between the line connecting the inferior cortex edge and the line passing through the flat portion of the superior cortex of the distal clavicle was measured. Results: Mean length differences between the ipsilateral and contralateral clavicle were smaller on both anteroposterior (AP; P=0.032) and axial images (P=0.029) in the preoperative bending group. The mean angular differences on both AP (P=0.045) and axial images (P=0.008) were smaller in the preoperative bending group. No significant differences were observed between the two groups in functional scores at the last follow-up. Conclusions: Smaller differences in length and angle between the ipsilateral and contralateral clavicle, indicative of reduction, were observed in the preoperative bending group. Using the precontoured technique with low expense, the operation was performed more effectively as reflected by a shorter operation time. Level of evidence: III.

  • Strengthening existing structure using the exterior steel wire is utilized because of their high adaptability and strengthening efficiency. In the practical aspect, the fixing methods, which are generally adopted have caused problems. A new method is not easily designed because of the weak points, a limit of tension stress, and complex transmit processes. To make up for the weak points in the current fixing method, tensile end bracket similar to a supporting plate has been developed, but the tensile end bracket was relatively big because of increasing length welded between the end plate and the resisting plate.
