  • Gas pressure sintered silicon nitride based composites with 5 wt% $\beta$-Si3N4 whiskers were prepared, and the variations depending on sintering additives and sintering temperature were studied. Sintering additives were 6 wt% Y2O3-1 wt% MgO(6Y1M), 6 wt%Y2O3-1 wt% Al2O3(6Y1A), 6 wt% Y2O3-1 wt% SiO2(6Y1S), and whiskers were unidirectionally oriented by a modified tape casting technique. Samples were fully densified by gas pressure sintering at 2148 K and 2273 K. As the sintering temperature increased, the size of large elongated grains was increased. Three point flexural strength of 6Y1M and 6Y1M samples was higher than that of 6Y1S sample, and the strength decreased as the sintering temperature increased. The indentation crack length became shorter for the sample sintered at higher temperature, and the difference between the cracks length parallel to and normal to the direction of whisker alignment was decreased. In case of cracks 45$^{\circ}$off the whisker alignment direction, the crack length anisotropy disappeared.

  • This study examined the optimum conditions and obtained the basic data for processing semi-dried sea cucumber flakes. During the boiling process, the weight and length of the sea cucumber decreased to 45.61% and 55.87%, respectively. Thereafter, there was a gradual decrease in the weight and length of the sea cucumber, which were finally maintained at 30.00% and 50.93%, respectively. The moisture content during drying was 38.37% after 3 hours at $60^{\circ}C$, and 36.56% after 5 hours at $30^{\circ}C$. However, the decrease in moisture content was slowly at 60 hours and $4^{\circ}C$, reaching a final value of 68.9%. The length of boiled sea cucumber during drying decreased to 66.35% after 11 hours at $60^{\circ}C$, and 68.90% after 24 hours at $30^{\circ}C$. The chromaticity and hardness tended to increase during the drying process. Moisture content and water activity of sea cucumber flakes decreased from 81.48% (0.963) to 33.50% (0.763), respectively, after 3 hours at $60^{\circ}C$. Following this, the moisture content and water activity continuously decreased to 30.75% (0.608) at 4 hours and 19.47% (0.437) at 5 hours, respectively. The overall acceptance score was 4.11 and 3.89 for 4 hours dry sample and 5 hours dry sample, respectively. However, the score was not statistically significant.

  • A simple method for determining the absorption coefficient of oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin in human blood is proposed as an application of the complex propagation constant of a guided wave in a thin-film optical waveguide. A serial multichannel sample chamber is constructed on the waveguide to vary the interaction length between the evanescent field and the sample, and the dependence of the sensor response on the interaction length is investigated for the various concentration of two hemoglobins. The sensor response is linearly proportional to the interaction length and the concentration of two hemoglobins. The attenuation constant due to the evanescent field absorption between the samples is experimentally obtained with the designed sensor, and then the absorption coefficient is determined by the proposed method. The absorption coefficients determined by the proposed method fairly well coincided with those obtained by the conventional transmission measurement.

  • In this paper, we proposed a new method to correct the zoom lens distortion for the video sequence captured by the zoom lens. First, we defined the nonlinear zoom lens distortion model which is represented by the focal length and the lens distortion using the characteristic that lens distortion parameters are nonlinearly and monotonically changed while the focal length is increased. Then, we chose some sample images from the video sequence and estimated a focal length and a lens distortion parameter for each sample image. Using these estimated parameters, we were able to optimize the zoom lens distortion model. Once the zoom lens distortion model was obtained, lens distortion parameters of other images were able to be computed as their focal lengths were input. The proposed method has been made experiments with many real images and videos. As a result, accurate distortion parameters were estimated from the zoom lens distortion model and distorted images were well corrected without any visual artifacts.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to compare the conventional and digital radiography in the estimation of working length in mandibular molars. Materials and Methods : Sixty molar teeth were selected and divided into three groups in the basis of canal curves (0-$15^{\circ}$, 15-$30^{\circ}$, > $30^{\circ}$). After the placement of a 15 K-file, radiographs were taken with a conventional film (Fspeed) and a digital sensor. Canal lengths were measured in these images by two observers. Statistical analysis was performed with repeated measures of ANOVA and paired sample t-test with 95% confidence. Results : There was a high inter-observer agreement on the measurements of working length in conventional and digital radiographs. There was no significant difference between the mean values of measurements in conventional and digital radiography. Moreover, there was no significant difference between conventional and digital radiography with the actual values in the basis of canal curves. Conclusion : The accuracy of conventional and digital radiography in the determination of the working length was in an acceptable range.

  • A total of 6 tamaraws were observed for determining coat color and measured for body conformation. Banding pattern of 4 blood proteins and 2 isozymes were analysed from the peripheral blood of two tamaraws. The coat colour of younger tamaraws were observed to be brown and adult was found to be complete black. The body weight, body length, withers height, head length, head width, horn length and tail length of adult male and female tamaraws were: 236 kg and 208 kg; 113.5 cm and 112.5 cm; 19.5 cm and 20 cm; 30.0 cm and 28.5 cm and 36.0 cm and 35.5 cm, respectively. The electrophoretic banding pattern, distance migrated and the allelic frequencies obtained in tamaraws were similar compared with that reported in swamp buffaloes. Although the sample size was very small, results of this study could be an important source of informations based on which a breeding programme can be designed to exploit some of the economic characters of tamaraw.

  • In this paper, the authors present the simulation results and the experimental considerations on the effects of the effects of the VCO oscillation characteristics caused by varying the length of the MSL and the composition capacitance of LC resonation circuity. Simulation was accomplished by nonlinear RF circuit simulator for designing and analyzing the RF characteristis of VCO. The samples with 3 different MSL lengths of which the length is 140mil, 280mil and 560mil respectively were fabricated by screen printing process. The oscillation frequency of each sample(VCO) was tuned to UHF band (750MHz~900MHz) by varying the capacitance of LC resonator circuit. The experimental results showed that the values of phase noise were -82, -93, -97[dBc/Hz] at 50[kHz] offset frequency, the pushing figures were 114, 94, 318[kHz] at applied voltage of $3\pm0.15$[V] and the harmonics were -21, -16, -13[dBc] for MSL lengths of 140mil 280mil, 560mil respectively. The frequency and output variation width were 779~898[MHz], -36~-33[dBm] for MSL with 140mil length; 818~836[MHz], -27.19~27.06[dBm] for 280mil; 751.54~751.198[MHz], -33.44~-33.31[dBm] for 560mil.

  • Non-destructive tests are commonly used in construction industry to access the quality and strength of concrete. However, till date there is no non-destructive testing method that can be adopted to evaluate the bond condition of reinforced concrete beams. In this regard, the presented research work details the use of ultra-sonic pulse velocity test method to evaluate the bond condition of reinforced concrete beam. A detailed experimental research was conducted by testing four identical reinforced concrete beam samples. The samples were loaded in equal increments till failure and ultra-sonic pulse velocity readings were recorded along the length of the beam element. It was observed from experimentation that as the cracks developed in the sample, the ultra-sonic wave velocity reduced for the same path length. This reduction in wave velocity was used to identify the initiation, development and propagation of internal micro-cracks along the length of reinforcement. Using the developed experimental methodology, researchers were able to identify weak spots in bond along the length of the specimen. The proposed method can be adopted by engineers to access the quality of bond for steel reinforcement in beam members. This allows engineers to carryout localized repairs thereby resulting in reduction of time, cost and labor needed for strengthening. Furthermore, the methodology to apply the proposed technique in real-world along with various challenges associated with its application have also been highlighted.

  • The problem of selection among competing models has been a fundamental issue in statistical data analysis. Good fits to data can be misleading since they can result from properties of the model that have nothing to do with it being a close approximation to the source distribution of interest (for example, overfitting). In this study we focus on the preference among models from a family of polynomial regressors. Three decades of research has spawned a number of plausible techniques for the selection of models, namely, Akaike's Finite Prediction Error (FPE) and Information Criterion (AIC), Schwartz's criterion (SCH), Generalized Cross Validation (GCV), Wallace's Minimum Message Length (MML), Minimum Description Length (MDL), and Vapnik's Structural Risk Minimization (SRM). The fundamental similarity between all these principles is their attempt to define an appropriate balance between the complexity of models and their ability to explain the data. This paper presents an empirical study of the above principles in the context of model selection, where the models under consideration are univariate polynomials. The paper includes a detailed empirical evaluation of the model selection methods on six target functions, with varying sample sizes and added Gaussian noise. The results from the study appear to provide strong evidence in support of the MML- and SRM- based methods over the other standard approaches (FPE, AIC, SCH and GCV).

  • Tracheid length and width, microfibril angle, compressive, bending, and impact strengths between the south and north sides of stem pith in Larix kaemferi were measured. Sample trees were 30 years old which had planted in the central region of Korea. In general, there were no difference in the tracheid length and width, microfibril angle, and strengths between the two sides. And no difference in tangential shrinkage and strengths between the two sides was thought to be due to identical microfibril angle between the two sides.
