We present the properties of galaxies in filaments around the Virgo cluster with respect to their vertical distance from the filament spine. Using the NASA-Sloan Atlas and group catalogs, we select galaxies that do not belong to groups in filaments. The filament member galaxies are then defined as those located within 3.5 scale length from the filament spine. The filaments are mainly (~86%) composed of low-mass dwarf galaxies of logh2M∗/M⊙ < 9 dominantly located on the blue cloud in color-magnitude diagrams. We observe that the g - r color and stellar mass of galaxies correlate with their vertical distance from the filament spine in which the color becomes red and stellar mass decreases with increasing vertical filament distance. The galaxies were divided into two subsamples in different stellar mass ranges, with lower-mass (logh2M∗/M⊙ ≤ 8) galaxies showing a clear negative g-r color gradient, whereas higher-mass (logh2M∗/M⊙ > 8) galaxies have a flat distribution against the vertical filament distance. We observe a negative EW(Hα) gradient for higher-mass galaxies, whereas lower-mass galaxies show no distinct variation in EW(Hα) against the vertical filament distance. In contrast, the NUV - r color distribution of higher-mass galaxies shows no strong dependence on the vertical filament distance, whereas the lower-mass galaxies show a distinct negative NUV - r color gradient. We do not witness clear gradients of HI fraction in either the higher- or lower-mass subsamples. We propose that the negative color and stellar mass gradients of galaxies can be explained by mass assembly from past galaxy mergers at different vertical filament distances. In addition, galaxy interactions might be responsible for the contrasting features of EW(Hα) and NUV - r color distributions between the higher- and lower-mass subsamples. The HI fraction distributions of the two subsamples suggest that ram-pressure stripping and gas accretion could be ignorable processes in the Virgo filaments.
The morphometry and morphology of the olfactory organ of the southern king spine loach Iksookimia hugowolfeldi were investigated by stereo microscopy and statistical analysis. Its external morphology consists of two holes, the anterior and posterior nostrils. The anterior nostril (0.35~0.53 mm in diameter) forms tubular process protruding vertically from each side of the snout. The posterior nostril (0.32~0.68 mm in major diameter) is a eye-like hole parallel to the skin. Internally, the rosette structure is set with 14 to 21 lamellae and medium raphe on the inner floor. In morphometry, its lamellar number (male vs. female; 18±1.8 vs. 17±1.6, P<0.05) and lamellar number to standard length ratio (24.2±1.3% vs. 21.7±2.5%, P<0.05) was larger in male than female. The lamellar number and standard length have high correlation in male (P<0.001) but not in female (P=0.170). It seems that such characteristics of the olfactory organ of I. hugowolfeldi are related to its bottom-dwelling life which digs and takes a rest under sand and sexual dimorphism by a distinct degree in olfactory dependence for reproduction of each sex.

The critical micelle concentration (CMC) and counter-ion binding constant (B) of the pure cationic surfactants (DTAB, TTAB, CTAB), nonionic surfactants (Tween-20, Tween-40, Tween-80), and their mixed surfactants (TTAB/Tween-20, TTAB/Tween-40, TTAB/Tween-80) in aqueous solutions of 4-chlorobenzoic acid were determined by using the UV/Vis absorbance method and the conductivity method from 284 K to 312 K. Thermodynamic parameters (${\Delta}G^o{_m}$, ${\Delta}H^o{_m}$, and ${\Delta}S^o{_m}$), associated with the micelle formation of those surfactant systems, have been estimated from the dependence of CMC and B values on the temperature and carbon length of surfactant molecules. The calculated values of ${\Delta}G^o{_m}$ are all negative within the measured range but the values of ${\Delta}H^o{_m}$ and ${\Delta}S^o{_m}$ are positive or negative, depending on the length of the carbon chain and surfactant.
Subband coding is to divide the signal frequency band into a set of uncorrelated frequency bands by filtering and then to encode each of these subbands using a bit allocation rationale matched to the signal energy in that subband. The actual coding of the subband signal can be done using waveform encoding techniques such as PCM, DPCM and vector quantizer(VQ) in order to obtain higher data compression. Most researchers have focused on the error in the quantizer, but not on the overall reconstruction error and its dependence on the filter bank. This paper provides a thorough analysis of subband codecs and further development of optimum filter bank design using vector quantizer. We compute the mean squared reconstruction error(MSE) which depends on N the number of entries in each code book, k the length of each code word, and on the filter bank coefficients. We form this MSE measure in terms of the equivalent quantization model and find the optimum FIR filter coefficients for each channel in the M-band structure for a given bit rate, given filter length, and given input signal correlation model. Specific design examples are worked out for 4-tap filter in 2-band paraunitary filter bank structure. These optimum paraunitary filter coefficients are obtained by using Monte Carlo simulation. We expect that the results of this work could be contributed to study on the optimum design of subband codecs using vector quantizer.
Quarternized poly(4-vinyl pyridine)s have been prepared by the reaction of poly (4-vinyl pyridine)s (Mw=50 kg/mol and 200 kg/mol) and alkylating agents varying the carbon numbers of the alkyl groups (m):dimethyl sulfate (m=1) as well as bromoalkane (m= 5, 8, 12, 16, and 22) was used as an alkylating agent. The degree of alkylation was determined by using an elemental analysis and NMR spectroscopy. As a result, polyelectrolytes were obtained by the almost full alkylation of poly (4-vinyl pyridine)s. The critical aggregation concentration (CAC) was determined by measuring the change of turbidity occurred by addition of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) into aqueous solution of quarternized poly-(4-vinyl pyridine)s, and the dependence of molecular weight of polymer, the length of N-alkyl group and concentration of NaCl upon CAC was investigated. As a result, as the molecular weight or the length of alkyl group was increased, less amount of SDS Gould induce the aggregation.

The effects of carrier transport and input power on the extinction ratio was theoretically analyzed in a 1.55${\mu}m$ InGaAsP/InGaAsP multiple-quantum-well(MQW) electroabsorption(EA) modulator. Poisson's equation, current continuity equations for electrons and holes, and optical field distribution were self-consistently solved by considering electric field dependent absorption coefficients. The field screening effect due to the carrier accumulation in heterointerface and the space-charge region occurred more seriously at the input side of modulator as input optical intensity increased. It was revealed that extinction ratio could be steeply degraded for modulator with the length of 200${\mu}m$ when an input power exceeds 10mW. A degradation of extinction ratio due to the field screening effect would be more significantly at high-performance devices such as a 1.55${\mu}m$DFB-LD/EA-modulator integrated source where optical coupling efficiency is almost complete or a very high-speed modulator with its length as short as a few tens ${\mu}m$.
The thermal and optical properties of cellobiose octa(cholestryloxycarbonyl)alkanoates CCCBn, $n=2{\sim}8$,10, the number of methylene units in the spacer) were investigated. All the samples formed monotropic cholesteric phases with left-handed helical structures. CCBn with n=2 or 10, in contrast with CCBn with $3{\leq}n{\leq}8$, did not display reflection colors over the full cholesteric range, suggesting that the helical twisting power of the cholesteryl group highly depends on the length of the spacer connecting the cholesteryl group to the cellobiose chain. The isotropic-cholestropic transition ($T_{ic}$) and glass transition temperatures decreased with increasing n and showed no odd-even effect. The transition entropy at $T_{ic}$ increased with increasing n from 2 up 6, but at n=7 it drops significantly and then increased again with increasing n from 8 to 10. The sharp change at n=7 may be attributed to a difference in arrangement of the side groups. The thermal stability and degree of order in the mesophase and the temperature dependence of the optical pitch observed for CCBn were significantly different from those reported for the cellulose tri(cholesteryloxycarbonyl)alkanoates and glucose penta(cholesteryloxycarbonyl)alkanoates. The results were discussed in terms of the differences in the degree of polymerization, the number of the mesogenic units per mole-glucose unit, and the conformation of the molecules.

Applicability of crack arrest load measured from the Charpy V-notch impact test has been investigated to predict the fracture toughness of nuclear reactor pressure vessel (RPV) steels (ASME SA508 Cl.3). The temperature dependence of the crack arrest load was well described by the type of exponential function characterized by an index temperature at which the crack arrest load is 2kN. The specific index temperature, which also well correlated with $T_{NDT}\;and\;T_{41J}$ is expected to be representative index temperature characterizing the crack arrest fracture toughness of RPV steels. Also, the crack arrest load correlated well with the stable crack length measured from the fracture surface. From the measurements of the crack arrest load and the stable crack length, the lower bound fracture toughness, $K_{Ia}$ of RPV steels could be predicted with sufficient accuracy.
The effect of individual density on the growth and survival of Laminaria japonica was experimentally evaluated. Four density treatments of young sporophytes (0.63 cm In maximum length) grown in the laboratory were transplanted to the southeastern coast of Korea and their survivorship and growth rate were measured twice a month from January to July, 1996. Plants showed higher survivorship at low density. Final densities at three lowest densities were similar, ranging from 34 to 38 inds${\cdot}100 cm^{-2}$. Planis at the highest density, however, suffered greater decline than at lower densities, and only 21 plants remained at the end of this study. Mean frond size (length and width) fluctuated throughout the study period at four densities. During the first two mouths after outplanting, mean frond size was negatively correlated with initial density, However, the size was density independent after three months. As stand density increased, size-frequency distribution through time tended to be more positively skewed. The 10 largest plants grew faster in frond size and attained larger size in the lower density. There was a positive relationship between plant size and relative growth rate (or survival). The slope of yield-density (Y-D) relationships at four densities ranged from -0.060 to -0.137. The study suggests that density can strongly affect the survival and growth of this alga. The density-dependent survival and growth patterns, however, were not strictly consistent with those of terrestrial plants.
The thermal and optical properties of poly {1-(cholesteryloxycarbonylalkanoyloxy) ethylene}s (PCALEn, n=2$\sim$8,10, the number of methylene units in the spacer) were investigated. All of the homologues formed monotropic cholesteric phases with left-handed helical structures. PCALEn with n=2 or 10, in constrast with PCALEn with $3{\leq}n{\leq}8$, did not display reflection colors over the full cholesteric range, suggesting that the helical twisting power of the cholesteryl group highly depends on the length of the spacer connecting the cholesteryl group to the polyethylene chain. The glass transition temperatures decreased with increasing n. The isotropic-cholesteric phase transition temperatures decreased with increasing n up to 7 and showed an odd-even effect. However it became almost constant when n is more than 7. This behavior is rationalized in terms of the change in the average shape of the side chain on varing the parity of the spacer. This rationalization also accounts for the observed variation of the entropy gain for the clearing transition. The thermal stability and degree of order in the mesophase and the temperature dependence of the optical pitch observed for PCALEn were significantly different from those reported for cellulose tri(cholesteryloxycarbonyl)alkanoates. The results were discussed in terms of the differences in the chemical structure and flexibility of main chain and the number of the mesogenic units per repeating unit.
