A Study on Securing a Stable GM for Each Ship Type Considering the Ship's Operating Status (선박의 운항 상태를 고려한 선종별 안정적인 GM 운용에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, the occurrence of a ship capsizing was analyzed as the main cause of the lack of stability or loss because of the improper management of the center of gravity, the movement of cargo or heavy weight when excessive steering occurs or when navigating during bad weather. Thus, to prevent a ship from capsizing, it is necessary to secure stability to enable the ship's return to its upright position, even if a dangerous heel occurs. The GM is a crucial evaluation factor regarding stability, which the navigation officer uses to preserve stability. In this study, based on the stability data collected from the operating of ships for five years, The GM by ship's type according to the operating status was analyzed specifically such as a ship's length, breadth, and gross tonnage. The feature of the GM distribution according to a ship's length was confirmed, and after performing the correlation analysis between the breadth and the GM, the ratio of the GM to breadth was calculated, and the result was compared with the previous ratio. Additionally, a simple approximation formula and minimum GM for the estimation of the GM by ship type were proposed by the regression analysis of the GM using the gross tonnage (GT)/breadth (B) to reflect the trend of larger ships being built. The results of this study are expected to be used as data for the review of securing a stable GM on ships.

Experimental Study on the Characteristics of Local Scour Hole Downstream of V-shaped Drop Structure Model (V자형 낙차공 모형 직하류 국부세굴공 발생특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • A drop structure, one of the representative river-crossing structures, is constructed to stabilize a riverbed. On the other hand, the structure interrupts the continuity of the river and causes the destruction of the hydro-ecological environment. Therefore, laboratory experiments of a natural type of drop structure with low differences were performed, and the empirical formula of a local scour hole is proposed. Four experimental flow rates were tested for various types of the drop structure models with 28 test cases. Based on the scour test, it was confirmed that the maximum scour depth occurs rather than the result of applying the previously proposed scour depth formulae. Correlation analysis of the major factors of scour hole at the downstream of the drop structure revealed a strong correlation between the upstream flow characteristics, drop structure height, and total crossing length of the drop model. In addition, the depth and length estimation formula of the maximum scour hole were proposed using the dimensionless variables and validated. In the future, it is also expected that more accurate scour prediction and calculation can be derived by conducting experimental studies and numerical analysis considering the various bed materials and flow conditions.

Relationship Between Above-and Below-Ground Biomass for Norway Spruce (Picea abies) : Estimating Root System Biomass from Breast Height Diameter (독일가문비나무(Picea abies [L.] Karst)의 지상부(地上部)와 지하부(地下部) 생체량(生體量)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) : 흉고직경(胸高直徑)에 의한 뿌리생체량(生體量) 추정(推定))

  • This study was conducted to elucidate the relationship between the root structure and the crown structure of Norway spruce(Picea abies [L.] Karst), and thereafter to obtain the regression equation for the estimation of relative root and needle biomass using the tree height and diameter at breast height(DBH) without measurement of root and needle biomass. The study site was Barbis stands of Harz region located in central part of Germany. Five dominant and three co-dominant trees of 30 to 40 year-old Norway spruce were selected and tree height, diameter at breast height, clear bole length, weight of total needle and branch, cross section and sapwood area at breast height for biomass of above ground part and also the length of root, the number of root, the weight of root, the cross section area of root etc. by dividing the horizontal and vertical roots for below ground part of tree were measured. The significantly correlation was shown between the biomass of most of variables of above ground parts and those of below ground parts. For the diameter of breast height to the weight of total root, regression equation was Y = 3.56X - 45.94 and decision coefficient was 0.96 showing highly correlation. The weight of total branches and needles, and the tree height etc. of above ground parts showed highly positive relationship with below ground biomass. The results obtained from this study can be used to the estimating of biomass of below ground using variables of above ground such as DBH in the 30 to 40 year-old Norway spruce stands.

Estimation of Growth Development Stages and Development Rate in Rape Plant by Air Temperature and Daylength (기온(氣溫)과 일장(日長)에 따른 유채(油菜)의 발육정도(發育程度)와 생육단계(生育段階) 예측(豫測))

  • This study was conducted to estimate the growth stages(DVS) and plant developmental rate(DVS) of rape by using climatic data. Daily average air temperature and day length were analyzed in correspond to growth stages of rape. Each growth stage was clasified by seeding, heading, flowering maturing stage respectively. Growing days of each stage were closely related with average air temperature and accumulated air temperature. Plant development rate increased fastly in condition on high temperature and long day length. Especially winter season the DVR increased linearly. DVR fluctuated from 0 to 0.026 upto heading date. In stages from heading to flowering, and to maturing DVR showed in range 0.018-0.048 and 0.005-0.018 respectively. Prediction of plant growth stage has high correlation with obserbed value, r=0.772-0.948, most highest of them were from heading to maturing.

  • The number of railway bridges in Korea reaches to about 3,000. Among them, the ratio of steel bridges is about 47%. Most of the long span railway bridges take the truss type, its number is 15 in Korea. These bridges have more than 30 years service life, it is expected that the damages of cracks and corrosion is going. Therefore, the estimation of fatigue life with random stress is considered as significant subject in maintenance. In this paper, the random stress was measured in bridges and counted the stress cycles using the rainflow counting method So, the stress range frequencies and their equivalent stress are obtained and the amplification factor for the span length, bridge types and traveling speed is assessed by the dynamic testing. From the results, the stress range of the stringer and the lower chord is higher than the other members and the characteristics of the stress histogram is varied to the loading system and the amount of the passing through trains. And the impact effects are depended on the traveling speed as well as the span length.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of different mixture ratios of vermicasts on the growth of leaf beet(Beta vulgaris var. cicla), young radish (Raphanus sativus L), spinach(Spinacia oleracea) and lettuce(Lactuca sativa) The mixture of ratios of vermicast(fermented pig manure with sawdust) and peatmoss were 100%+0%, 60%+40%, 40%+60% and 0%+100%(control), respectively. The bulk density, particle density, pH, electrolytic conductivity, ash, total nitrogen, cation exchange capacity, available phosphorous and exchangeable cations increased significantly compared to those grown in the 100% of peatmoss(control). The significantly higher values of plant length, leaf area, shoot dry weight, root weight, root length and biological yield obtained were $40{\sim}100%$ and 40% of vermicast in leaf beet and lettuce, respectively. The young radish and spinach showed that significantly differences of shoot dry weight, root weight and biological yield in the mixture ratios of vermicast were $40{\sim}60%$ and 40% in young radish and spinach, respectively.

  • This study has determined optimal type, and location of loop detector to measure accurately traffic condition influenced by traffic variation with real time. Optimal type of loop detector for through vehicle at stop bar was determined by confidences of occupancy period, and nonoccupancy period, and so appropriate detector type for application to real time traffic control system has been decided on special loop detector.

It is desired that optimal location of through loop detector should be installed within 50cm of stop bar owing to vehicle behavior. And optimal location of loop detector for left turn vehicle is determined by left turn vehicle behavior on stop bar. In the case of install only one loop, it is desirable that within 20cm of stop bar. Both the special loop (1.8 × 4.0m : num 1.7) and existing loop (1.8 × 1.8m : num1) would be suitable. A location standard aspects, while regarding as economic, existing loop (1.8 × 1.8m : num1) would be suitable. A location of the queue detector and the spillback prevention detector considering the link length, the pedestran crossing is be or not and the estimation range of queue. And if the link length is shorter than 250m, locations of queue detector and spillback protect detector must be considered in the respect of queue management.

  • The estimation of the fatigue design life for large welded structures is usually performed using the liner cumulative damage method such as Palmgren-Miner rule or the equivalent damage method. When a fatigue crack is detected in a welded steel structure, the residual service life has to be estimated base on S-N curve method and liner elastic fracture mechanics. In this study, to examine the 3D fatigue crack behavior and estimate the fatigue life of out-of-plane gusset fillet welded joint, the fatigue tests were carried out on the model specimens. Investigations of three-dimensional fatigue crack propagation on gusset welded joint was used the finite element analysis of FEMAP with NX NASTRAN and FRANC3D. Fatigue crack growth analysis was carried out to demonstrate the effects of aspect ratio, initial crack length and stress ratio on out-of-plane gusset welded joints. In addition, the crack behaviors of fatigue tests were compared with those of the 3D crack propagation analysis in terms of changes in crack length and aspect ratio. From this analysis result, SIFs behaviors and crack propagation rate of gusset welded joint were shown to be similar fatigue test results and the fatigue life can also be predicted.

  • A study has been made to find out a new method of calculating the survival rate of a fish population from length composition and growth equation. 1. In the steady state of the fish population, let the total mortality rate be z, the age of complete recruitment $\alpha$, and the number of $\chi$ year class $N_\chi$. Then ire obtain $$N\chi=N\alpha\;\exp\;{-z(\chi-\alpha)}$$ Let the oldest age in the catch be h, the average age between the age of complete recruitment and the oldest age in the catch $U\chi$. Then we have $$U\chi=\frac{a-b\;\exp\;(-z(b-a))}{1-\exp\;(-z(b-a))}+\frac{1}{z}....(1)$$ and then let be infinite. Then we obtain $$Z=\frac{1}{U\chi-\alpha....(2)$$ 2. Calculating numerical value of $U\chi$ from age composition table and growth equation and substitute in (1) or (2) for it, we may obtain the value of s and $\varrho^{-z}$. 3. This method is applied t a case of yellow croaker in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea. The results are as follows: Total mortality rate 0.82595 Survival rate 0.43782 95 percent confidence interval 0.43767-0.43797.

  • According to the revision of the Housing Act in 2013, it has been possible to carry out an apartment remodeling project involving two to three floor vertical extension. The remodeling project with vertical extension requires foundation reinforcement because structural safety due to additional load and enhanced seismic criteria must be met. In this case, structural analysis is performed to analyze the load distributed to existing PC pile and reinforced additional pile. The vertical stiffness ($K_v$) of the pile is required for structural analysis, but the research on the 20~30 year old PC pile stiffness is very limited. In this paper, the stiffness of the PC pile in accordance with the change of diameter and length was analyzed by examining the results of 38 field pile load tests performed during the construction of the apartments in the 1990's. As a result of the analysis, the pile stiffness decreases with the increase of the length-diameter ratio (L/D). In addition, the results of on-site pile load test are compared with the coefficient 'a' for estimating pile stiffness proposed in Korea Highway Bridge Design Standard (2008) and the Pile Foundation Design Guideline of Korea Railroad Corporation (2012).
