Lemna gibba was newly cultured and provided for toxicity tests. In this study, the chromate toxicity tests for Lemna gibba were performed according to the OECD Lemna growth inhibition test guideline. The test species was Lemna gibba, and the tests were repeated 5 times. To evaluate the toxicity test results, the average specific growth rate, EC50, 95% confidential limit, and variances were calculated. The test performance was analyzed by the doubling time and test statistics. The average values of EC50 data determined by logistic and linear interpolation curves were 25.9 ppm and 35.4 ppm respectively (by chromate concentration). The doubling time of all controls were below 2.5 day, so all tests passed the criteria for the test performance. This study introduced a new test method, Lemna growth inhibition test, which is provided for the hazard assessment of aquatic environment.
Conditions for artificial culture of Lemna Paucicostata and its nutritional values were examined in this study. Lemna P. was cultured using artificial wastewater and a bioreactor (total volume $2,630\;cm^3$, working volume $2,240\;cm^3$) was operated at conditions of 6,250 lux and $28^{\circ}C$. Water flow affected the growth of Lemna P.: growth rate was very high (more than $1.1\;d^{-1}$) at a condition of no-water movement, but it was very low (less than $0.15\;d^{-1}$) when water moved slowly. The growth of Lemna P. was higher in $16h\;d^{-1}$ light cycle than in Sand $24h\;d^{-1}$, and it was also severely affected by the initial $NH_4$-N levels of wastewater. The growth rate of Lemna P. was high in lower $NH_4$-N level, indicating that the growth rate is in inverse proportion to $NH_4$-N concentration in wastewater. However, the contents of crude protein (CP) of Lemna P. were proportional to the initial $NH_4$-N concentration. The CP contents of Lemna P. cultured at 2, 10, 50 and 100 $NH_4$-N mg $L^{-1}$ was 18, 24, 37, 43%, respectively, showing the Lemna P. cultured at 50 and $100\;mg\;L^{-1}$ had similar protein contents to linseed (CP 35%), cottonseed (CP 38%) and soybean (CP 45%). Fat, protein, fiber, NDF and ADF contents of Lemna P. harvested at conditions of $16h\;d^{-1}$ light cycle and less than $2\;mg\;L^{-1}$ of $NH_4$-N level was 2.8, 18, 27, 20, 41 and 65.7%, respectively. Since the growth rate of Lemna P. was very high (more than $1.1\;d^{-1}$) at those conditions, it was convinced that mass production of valuable protein and fiber sources are feasible. In particular, since the Lemna P. has unsaturated fatty acids found mainly in animal fat as well as beneficial fatty acids to health such as C18:ln9c, C18:2n6c, C20:5n3 and C22:2, the Lemna P. biomass would be a highly valuable alternative feed source to grains.
Biomass yield, nutritive value and nutrient utilization efficiency of different genera of duckweed (DW, Lemnaceae) under the same nutritional and management conditions were studied. Three genera of DW namely: Lemna perpusilla, Spirodela polyrhiza and Woljfia arrhiza, were cultivated in 18 plastic sinks each of $59{\times}54{\times}35cm^3$ size. Each sink contained approximately 80 L of water and was charged once with 6.648 kg of anaerobically fermented cow dung effluent. The seed rate for Spirodela, Lemna and Wolffia were 600, 400 and $600g/m^2$ respectively. Duckweed were harvested at 48 hours intervals. Media total N concentration for Lemna and Wolffia gradually increased with time. Growth of duckweed was measured by subtracting the inoculum from the total biomass production. Growth of Spirodela ceased within 4 days but Lemna and Wolffia continue to grow up to 34 days. Bio-mass yield was significantly (p<0.05) higher in Wolffia (906 kg/ha/d) than Lemna (631 kg/ha/d). Dry matter (DM) yield was very similar in Lemna (14.80 kg/ha/d) and Wolffia (14.57 kg/ha/d). The N content was non-significant higher in Lemna (5.45%) than Wolffia (5.00%) and Spirodela (4.6%). The crude protein (CP, $N{\times}6.25$) yield was non-significantly higher in Lemna (4.83 kg/ha/d) than Wolffia (4.32 kg/ha/d). The acid detergent fibre (ADF) content was the highest in Wolffia (28.59%), followed by Spirodela (19.47%) and Lemna (12.39%). Utilization efficiency of CP was 273 and 314% respectively for Wolffia and Lemna. However, similar efficiency values for Spirodela was only 1.5%. Considering the bio-mass yield, nutritive value and nutrient utilization efficiency, production performance of DW were in the order of Lemna>Wolffia>Spirodela under the present experimental conditions.
The response changes of the specific growth rate of Lemna minor duckweed was modeled using the logarithms of frond numbers on tritium activity concentration and gamma radiation dose from cobalt 60. The concept of average specific growth rate depends on the general exponential growth pattern, where toxicity is estimated based on the effect on the growth rate. One of the main questions of the effect of the radiation dose on duckweed is how to correlate the effect of beta radiation with the effect of any other radiation for modeling radiation on Lemna minor. Experimental data were extrapolated by utilizing the OECD guidelines. A linear relationship of absorbed dose and activity concentration was obtained for the average dependency growth rate of Lemna minor as D = (0.1257)·A0.585. The dose rate of gamma irradiation from 60Co increases with tritium activity dependence, on the specific growth rate of the Lemna minor duckweed. An increase in the tritium activity causes a decrease in the specific growth rate of the Lemna minor duckweed. It indicates that as the quantity of the beta radiation dose increase in Lemna minor duckweed, a higher quantity of gamma radiation will be required to cause the same effect in the specific growth rate of Lemna minor duckweed. The relation between the inhibition of the Lemna minor seedling growth and gamma and beta radiation dosage agrees roughly with that between the decrease of survival rate or fertility and dosage.
The effects of basal media, sucrose and phytohormone concentrations, and gelling agent combinations on in vitro frond proliferation of Lemna gibba G3 and 24 additional Lemna gibba strains were examined. Frond proliferation was equivalent on Schenk and Hidebrand. Murashige and Skoog. Nitsch and Nitsch, and Gamborg's B5 media and poor on murashige and Skoog medium in the absence of benzyladenine. With the addition of benzyladenine, Schenk and Hildebrand and Gamborg's B5 Were superior and equivalent. The addition of benzuyladenine increased equally frond proliferation at either 1 or $10{\mu}M$, however at $10{\mu}M$ fronds were severely curled or fused. Benzyladenine and thidiazuron suppressed root growth but kinetin was found to greatly enhance root growth. Gibberellic acid inhibited frond proliferation. Frond proliferation was significantly different on the four sucrose concentrations of 0, 1, 3, and 5% Among them, 3% sucrose was found to be superior. The reduced frond size observed in cultures grown on 8% sucrose could be explained by showing medium osmotic potential in excess of frond water potential. Gell agents also varied significantly in their ability to promote frond proliferation with 0.25% Gelrite or a mixture of 0.15% Gelrite and 0.4% agar. Proliferation of 25 Lemna gibba strains on medium neat optimal for Lemna gibba G3 showed a six-fold variation across strains with Lemna gobba G3 placing in the top 5 fastest proliferating strains.

Colonization ability was studied with Lemna paucicostata and Spirodela polyrhiza. Colonization ability of each species was defind as its ability to; (1) tolerate to desiccation, (2) multiplicate and spread in the new habitat, (3) inhibit the other species competitively. Lemna paucicostata was inferior to Spirodela polyrhiza in ability (1), but superior to Spirodela polyrhiza in abilities (2) and (3). Whenever lemna paucicostata and Spirodela polyrhiza are colonized recently, only these three abilities can not explain which species is better colonist. Even short unsuitable periods would eliminate a species, with time lag occurring before recolonization. This would result in a discontinuous of the species concerned.
The reversal effect of salicylic acid(SA) on inhibition of flowering in Lemna gibba $G_3$ grown on ${NH_4}^+$-free 1/2H medium under continuous light is modified by ${PO_4}^{2-}$- and $Ca^{2+}$ levels. Dimethylsulfoxide(DMSO) either depresses the SA effect in ${NH_4}^{1}$-free 1/2H medium or amplifies it in E medium. The dual action of DMSO determined by relative levels of macro and micronutrient components is discussed.
The lethal actions in Arabidopsis thaliana and Lemna polyrhiza brought about by certain inorganic form of Mn, Ba, Hg, Cu salts, and organic form of Na salts, were studied with aseptic artificial media. These metal ions at certain concentrations caused lethality of either Arabidopsis or Lemna when the media were without Ca ion. On the contrary, addition of Ca to the media protected the organisms from such lethality. It was postulated for the present from the proceeding evidence that Ca adsorbed and distributed along the sites between the plasma and cell membrane acts for suppressing permeation of toxic level of metal ions causing the lethality of these plants.
Exogenously applied spermine, spermidine and putrescine caused a delay of senescence in fronds Lemna gibba G3 under continuous illumination. When the proximal half of a frond containing the meristematic“pockets”was removed, endogenous spermidine level in the distal half (half frond) increased initially to a miximal level, which was followed by a decline during a period of 10 days of incubation in light. No appreciable changes were observed with putrescine or spermine levels. Treatment of fronds with $\alpha$-difluromethylarginine (DFMA) resulted in both reduced level of spermidine and enhancement of chlorophyll loss in half fronds. $\alpha$-difluoromethylornithine (DFMO) was found to be virtually ineffective in either parameter. Results of experiments with ABA and kinetin indicate that there is a close correlation between the progress of senescence and spermidine level in Lemna fronds under illumination. It is suggested that endogenous level of spermidine is associated, at least in part, with frond senescence in this aquatic plant.
