  • Objectives: Unprotected leisure time exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun or artificial tanning beds is the most important environmental risk factor for melanoma, a malignant skin cancer with increasing incidences over the past decades. The aim of the present study was to assess the impact of skin health information provided by several sources and different publishing issues on knowledge, risk perception, and sun protective behavior of sunbathers. Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted among Austrian residents (n=563) spending leisure time outdoors in August 2010. Results: Print media, television, and family were perceived as the most relevant sources of information on skin health, whereas the source physician was only ranked as fourth important source. Compared to other sources, information provided by doctors positively influenced participants' knowledge on skin risk and sun protective behavior resulting in higher scores in the knowledge test (p=0.009), higher risk perception (p<0.001), and more sun protection (p<0.001). Regarding gender differences, internet was more often used by males as health information source, whereas females were more familiar with printed information material in general. Conclusions: The results of this survey put emphasis on the demand for information provided by medical professionals in order to attain effective, long-lasting promotion of photoprotective habits.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the variables on employees' retirement expectations divided into imposed frustration, new beginning, transition to rest, and continuing. Independent variables were individual(gender, age, occupation, income, education, and health condition), psychological(self-esteem, locus of control, attitude of leisure, and attitude of family), and job-related variables(job attitude, job satisfaction, and job stability). In order to achieve this purpose, a survey was conducted with 515 employees from Daegu and Kyungpook. Retirement expectations were measured with questionnaire based on several studies. The data analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, factor analysis, Cronbach's $\alpha$, correlation, and multiple regression. The major findings were as follows. First, imposed frustration was affected by income, self-esteem, locus of control, job satisfaction, job attitude, and job stability. Second, new beginning was affected by self-esteem, locus of control, attitude toward leisure and family, and job stability. Individual variables were not statistically significant predictors of new beginning. Third, transition to rest was affected by locus of control, attitude toward family, job satisfaction, job attitude, and job stability. Individual variables were not statistically significant predictors of transition to rest. Finally, continuing was affected by age, education, job satisfaction. Psychological variables were not statistically significant predictors of continuing.

  • This study examined the time allocation pattern of farm wives. In particular it addressed i)the differences in extent of time spent in farming housework child care and leisure between on-farm and off-farm seasons ii)differences in the extent of time spent in such activities among farm wives and urban wives and iii) the determinants of time spent in such activities. To achieve these goals a system of time allocation equations based on household production theory was employed. On hundred and eight farm wives wiere selected in 1993 by the methods of judgement sampling and cluster sampling. Two major questions in the survey elicited sociodemographic information and time-use of farm wives using the time-diary method, The results indicate that farm wives different decisions about how to allocate their time to farming housework child care leisure during on-farm and off-farm seasons. In addition it was that farm wives are more likely to have dual responsibilities than are urban wives. Finally in the off-farm season education number of younger children and region were significant variables in explaining the time allocation decisions of farm wives. However only age was a significant factor in their time allocation decisions during the on-farm season. This leads one to conclude that time allocation is not a choice for farm wives in the on-farm season.

  • In order to investigate the effect of an 8-week elastic band exercise program according to age on the isokinetic strength and dynamic equilibrium of the knee, 10 women under 49 years old and 10 women over 50 years old were selected. Dynamic equilibrium was measured through Y-Balance test one week before the exercise program, and power and endurance were confirmed by measuring isokinetic muscle strength of the knee. After measurement, small tool exercise was performed for 8 weeks. After 8 weeks of exercise, isokinetic muscle strength and dynamic equilibrium were measured. As a result, isokinetic muscle strength, which checks muscle strength and muscular endurance, increased after measurement than before measurement regardless of age, and dynamic equilibrium increased after measurement rather than before measurement, and the group under 49 years of age was higher than the group over 50 years old. We think that small tool exercise improves isokinetic muscle strength and is effective in neuromuscular development, improving dynamic stability ability, which is an important factor in preventing falls.
