  • A 10-year-old spayed female Yorkshire terrier dog with a history of pleural effusion and dyspnea for a week was referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Radiography revealed pulmonary edema and pleural effusion. A mass infiltrating the right atrial lumen and especially the supra-tricuspid valve was identified with echocardiography. The mass was diagnosed as intracardiac neoplasia. Symptomatic treatment was prescribed to alleviate the symptoms of heart failure. Despite symptomatic treatment, the patient died a few days later. After obtaining consent from the owner, necropsy and histopathological evaluation were performed. The result was consistent with cardiac leiomyoma, and the diagnosis was confirmed by immunohistochemical staining. To the authors' knowledge, this case is the first report of intracardiac leiomyoma in a dog in Korea.

  • We report here a case of pulmonary benign metastasizing leiomyoma from the uterus in a 45 year old woman. The patient presented for investigation of multiple pulmonary nodules on a routine chest roentgenogram. The patient had undergone uterine myomectomy due to uterine leiomyoma 10 years earlier. We performed thoracoscopic wedge resection for definitive diagnosis. Histologically, spindle shaped smooth muscle cells appeared between collagen stroma, histology similar to that seen in uterine myoma. The tumor tissue tested positive for estrogen and progesterone receptors. The pathological findings were consistent with benign metastasizing leiomyoma. The patient was in pre-menopause. She received no specific treatment for lung tumors, and we did not found any changes in the lesions after one year follow up without any medication.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of Astragalus membranaceus extract solution on cell cycle regulation and apoptosis of human leiomyomal cell. Methods: The leiomyoma cell of patients was used in the study, and we administered the extract solution of Astragalus membranaceus concentration at 1, $10mg/m{\ell}$ to the leiomyoma cell for 48 hours. We used flow cytometry and western blotting to confirm cell cycle and apoptosis. Results: In flow cytometry, G1 phase of the $1mg/m{\ell}$ and $10mg/m{\ell}$ group was shortened and S phase of the $1mg/m{\ell}$ and $10mg/m{\ell}$ group was increased. Cycline D1 expression increased in 1, $10mg/m{\ell}$ group. Bcl-2 expression decreased in 1, $10mg/m{\ell}$ groups than control group. And Bax expression that regulated cell apoptosis more increased in 1, $10mg/m{\ell}$ group than control group. VEGF expression rised in higher Astragalus membranaceus concentration group. Conclusion: This study suggest that Astragalus membranaceus might induce cell apoptosis of leiomyoma cell and shorten cell cycle. And Astragalus membranaceus would not have the regulation effect of cell cycle.

  • Leiomyoma of the trachea is a very rare tumor, and the tracheal tumor is frequently misdiagnosed and treated as bronchial asthma. We report here a case of leiomyoma of the trachea which was successfully resected. A 40-year-old woman has sufferred from a repeated episode of asthmatic attack for two years. Intensive therapy for asthma had no beneficial effect on her respiratory symptoms, and wheezing and stridor did not disappear. Chest CT and bronchoscopy revealed a pedunculated mass on the trachea just above the carina. Wedge resection of the trachea and right main stem bronchus including the tumor and end-to-end anastomosis was performed. The result of the pathologic examination of the tumor was tracheal leiomyoma. Her postoperative course was uneventful and postoperative bronchoscopic findings showed clear healing of the anastomosis site.

  • Uterine leiomyoma is the most common tumor in the female genital tract. Although the tumor is benign, it is of paramount importance since it often causes profuse menstrual bleeding, pressure symptoms, and infertility. Nevertheless, the etiology and patholphysiology of this abnormality remain poorly understood. The traditional definitive treatment for uterine leiomyomas is hysterectomy and, even today, symptomatic leiomyomas are the leading cause of hysterectomy in Korea. Clearly, the development of a safe, effective, and nonsurgical method of treatment for leiomyoma would be of great benefit to many women. The present study was designed to investigate the effect of Rhubarb on apoptosis in uterine leiomyoma cells. Results demonstrate that Rhubarb inhibited cell growth in dose-dependent manner. Cell growth significantly decreased to 60% of control in the treatment of Rhubarb (300㎍/㎖). Associated with the decreased response, there was a concomitant and significant delay of subG1 8.32% above baseline in the treatment of Rhubarb (300㎍/㎖). The delay of subG1 showed a dose-dependent manner, as evidenced by the flow cytometry. The reduced cellular viability on exposure to Rhubarb may represent the induction of apoptosis, at least in part, as concomitantly evidenced by enhanced DNA fragmentation, PARP cleavage and caspase 9 and decreased pro-caspase 3. In addition, Rhubarb decreased clAP1 expression levels in dose-dependent manner. Talcen together, there results suggest that Rhubarb can produce a potent inhibition effect of apoptosis and implicate the delay of G1 phase in the cell cycle and pathways of caspase 3 and 9 in the mechanism underlying inhibitory apoptosis effect of Rhubarb.

  • The leiomyoma of the bronchus is a very rare benign tumor in the lower respiratory tract. Though classical treatment of the bronchial leiomyoma is surgical resection, bronchoscopic tumor resection has been recently applied to selected cases. We experienced two cases of bronchial leiomyomas which were successfully resected under flexible bronchoscopy using Nd-YAG laser and bronchial snare. We speculated that bronchoscopic resection of the bronchial leiomyoma would be an effective and safe way of treatment, and more technical developments should follow.

  • Leiomyoma is a type of benign smooth muscle neoplasm that is a common neoplasm of the uterus and gastrointestinal tract but rarely affects the head and neck region and is especially unlikely to affect the oral cavity. The diagnosis of leiomyoma is mainly determined by histopathological studies due to variation in its clinical appearance and symptoms. In the present paper we report two rare cases of gingival angioleiomyoma in the posterior maxilla and mandible. After total excision, hematoxylin-eosin and smooth muscle actin staining confirmed the diagnosis of angioleimyoma.

  • Eight surgically treated patients with leiomyoma of the esophagus are presented. The patients were 6 men and 2 women whose ages ranged from 20 to 50 years. One of them was asymptomatic, while the remaining seven had mainly dysphagia and weight loss. The preoperative diagnosis was made in 6 cases. One patient had coexisting esophageal carcinoma masking the presence of the leiomyoma and masking the lesion an incidental operative funding. The other which was asymptomatic was diagnosed as a mediastinal tumor preoperatively. Six patients were treated by thoracotomy and enucleation of the tumor. Two patients were treated as esophagectomy and esophagogastrostomy. There were no operative deaths, and the overall results were excellent.

  • We performed thoracoscopic resection for diagnosis in 41 year-old-female presenting with multiple pulmonary nodules in both lung fields, which was detected incidentally on routine chest x-ray and followed by additional exmaminations including chest CT scan and percutaneous needle aspiration biopsy under the presumptive diagnosis of metastatic cancer. During thoracoscopy, the result of the frozen section analysis of multiple masses revealed strong evidence of leiomyoma. In her past medical history, she had undergone myomectomy, and hysterectomy, 7 year ago and 10 year ago, respectively. Based on permanent, special staining of specimen, estrogen receptor assay and review of past specimen of uterine myoma the final diagnosis was benign metastasizing leiomyomata from uterine myoma, the report was very uncommon in Korean and English literatures. The patient has been followed up for 2 year without special therapy, such as hormonal therapy.

  • Vascular leiomyomas are benign tumors of smooth muscle origin arising from the muscularis layer of blood vessel walls. They can occur anywhere in the body where smooth muscle is found and usually occur in the lower extremity as a slow-growing, firm, occasionally painful mass. However they are rare in the head and neck and very rare in hard palate. Here we report a case of a vascular leiomyoma presenting as a soft mass of the hard palate and review the literatures.
