  • This study is to examine if emotional valance depending upon the result of baseball game(losing or winning) of subjects' favorite team yields hemispheric asymmetry measured by fMRI. Subjects were twelve fans of the Samsung Lions baseball team. The brain activations have been observed while they watched winning and losing scenes of their favorite team. As a results of the experiment, those who watched winning scenes showed the activation of the left and right cuneus, right inferior occipital gyrus, right inferior frontal gyrus, left amygdala, right parahippocampal gyrus, left uncus, left cingulate gyrus, left inferior temporal gyrus, right middle temporal gyrus, left declive, left culmen. On the contrary, those who watched losing scenes showed the activation in the right middle frontal gyrus, left anterior cingulate, left sub-gyral, left lentifomrm nucleus, left thalamus, left claustrum, left insula. The evidence of hemispheric asymmetry from this study has not been demonstrated and activation in amygdala observed during watching winning scene has not been observed in losing scene. Therefore more in-dept research is required about defeat stimuli induction.

  • A persistent left superior vena cava draining into the coronary sinus is the most benign and widely encountered abnormality and can easily be explained embryologically as the persistence of the usual pattern of vnous circulation in the embryo,. However a persistent left superior vena cava draining into the left atrium with absent right superior vena cava is an extremely rare anomaly. We report this situation in an infant with tetralogy of Fallot. The most common approach has traditionally been intraatrial baffle repair to create a tunnel to the right atrium or rerouting of the left superior vena cava flow by directly anastomosing the left superior vena cava to the right atrium In the present study the left superior vena cava was transposed to the left pulmonary artery after the correction of tetralogy of Fallot. • It is well known that the morphologic feature of coronary artery is variant as finger print. Left coronary artery is divided into the left anterior descending artery and circumflex artery and supplies almost left atrium, left ventricle and interventricular septum. Clinically, the morphologic features of number of branches and the length of the left main coronary artery are important. In Korea, there are few reports about morphologic study of the coronary artery, and the coronary angiogram and open heart surgery are common. Now the author studied the morphology of the proximal part of the left coronary artery in Korean 50 Adult cadavers and obtained the following results: 1. The length of the left main coronary artery is from 5 mm to 16 mm [mean 9.7 mm]. 2. The diameter of the proximal part of the left coronary artery is from 3.2 mm to 7.7 mm [mean 5.3]. 3. The features of the branching are bifurcation [58%] trifurcation [38%] and quadrifurcation [4%]. 4. The diameter of the left anterior descending artery is from 2.7 mm to 8.1 mm [mean 4.5] and circumflex artery from 2.1 mm to 6.2 mm [mean 3.9].

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the electromyographic (EMG) activity of the abdominal muscles and to compare the activity ratios of the bilateral rectus abdominis (RA) to oblique abdominal muscles during shoulder abduction in opposite directions with single leg raising (SLR) performed in the supine position on a foam roller. Methods: Fifteen healthy subjects were recruited to the study. Each subject lay on the foam roller and performed left single leg raising with right or left shoulder $90^{\circ}$ abduction (Abd); performed in a random order. Surface EMG recordings of selected abdominal muscles (i.e., the RA, external oblique abdominis [EO], internal oblique abdominis [IO], and transverse abdominis [TrA]) were normalized to maximum voluntary isometric contraction. EO/RA and IO and TrA/RA ratios were determined with surface EMG. Data were analyzed by Independent t-test. The statistical significance level was p<0.05. Results: The results were as follows: (1) the right RA, left EO, and right IO and TrA muscle activities increased significantly at the left SLR with left Abd compared to the left SLR with right Abd (p<0.05); and (2) the ratio of right EO/RA activity increased significantly at the left SLR with right Abd compared to left Abd (p<0.05). Conclusion: These findings suggest that left SLR with left Abd on a foam roller is an appropriate exercise for activation of specific oblique abdominal muscles.

  • A complete transection of left main bronchus was repaired by end to end anastomosis 5 months after the chest trauma in the Yeungnam University Hospital. The patient was a 36 years old male who had been injured bluntly by a heavy package on the left chest. The initial symptoms and signs were dyspnea, chest pain and subcutaneous emphysema on the left neck, but on admission at our hospital his chief complaint was only mild left chest discomfort. The preoperative chest X-ray findings 5 months after the trauma revealed total collapse of the left lung, deviation of trachea to the left, elevation of left diaphragm, abrupt discontinuation in the course of an air-filled left main bronchus and bronchoscopy showed that the left main bronchus was completely occluded, without any signs of inflammation, approximately 4 cm from the carina. The operation was performed through standard posterolateral thoracotomy incision at the fifth intercostal space. There was not any suppuration within the transected lung but plenty of white mucus which was removed by forceful suction. The transected bronchial edges were debrided and anastomosed primarily by end to end with interrupted nonabsorbable sutures. The suture line was reinforced with a pleural flap. The postoperative course was uneventful and pulmonary function following operation improved progressively and proved the delayed repair to have a reasonable decision.

  • Adenoid cystic carcinoma usually grows in the trachea or near its bifurcation and causes obstruction of the air way. We recently experienced a 33 year-old male patient who had adenoid cystic carcinoma in the left main bronchus with the chief complaint of productive cough. On the bronchoscopy, the mass obstructed the left main bronchus completely and had nodularity and increased vascularity. The trachea was shifted to the left side and the lower lobe of the left lung was atelectatic on chest X-ray and computed axial tomogram. He underwent left tracheal sleeve pneumonectomy and lymph node dissection through bilateral thoracotomy. At first,we attempted left tracheal sleeve pneumonectomy through the left thoracotomy, however, it was very difficult to perform carinoplastic procedure after sleeve resection of 2.5cm of distal trachea and 1cm of proximal right main bronchus including whole left lung because of poor operative field and difficulty in the anastomosis of the right main bronchus to the distal end of the trachea without tension. Therefore after radical resection of the left lung we made right thoracotomy, through which we could anastomosed the distal trachea and right main bronchus with 4-0 PDS interrupted suture after mobilization of the right hilum without difficulty. The tumor was confirmed to be adenoid cystic carcinoma with metastasis to subcarinal lymph node histopathologically. Postoperative course was uneventful but he needed two bronchoscopic procedure to clear distal airway of the retained bronchial secretion. He was discharged at 14 days after operation with complete recovery.

  • Throught this paper, we will investigate some properties of left regular and strongly reduced near-rings. Mason introduced the notion of left regularity and he characterized left regular zero-symmetric unital near-rings. Also, this concept have been studied by several authors. The purpose of this paper is to find some characterizations of the strong reducibility in near-rings, and the strong regularity in near-rings which are closely related with strongly reduced near-rings.

  • In this paper we introduce the notion of weakly prime left ideals in near-subtraction semigroups. Equivalent conditions for a left ideal to be weakly prime are obtained. We have also shown that if (M, L) is a weak $m^*$-system and if P is a left ideal which is maximal with respect to containing L and not meeting M, then P is weakly prime.
