  • Objectives Dongeuisasangchobongueonbimangrok(DSCB) is a 8-paged material which was written in calligraphy. Although Dongeuisusebowonsasangchobongueon(DSSC) was regarded as a manuscript of Dr. Jema Lee, and the prescriptions of DSCB were very similar to those of DSSC, there are few DSCB-related prescription studies until now. The purpose of this study is to perform a precise comparative study between two manuscripts and to make the difference and commonness clear. Methods A comparison of the components, amounts of the herbal medicine, and treatable diseases of each prescription was carried out. Results DSCB contained a total of 41 prescriptions, including 15 for Taeeumin, 12 for Soeumin, 14 for Soyangin, and 34 prescriptions(82.9%) were the same with DSSC. There was one missing component in 2 prescriptions, and the rest generally had the same component and the treatable diseases, but there was a slight difference in amounts of the herbal medicine between two manuscripts. There were a total of seven kinds of prescription, including 2 for Taeeumin, 3 for Soeumin, and 2 for Soyangin, recorded only in DSCB. Conclusions As this manuscript is valuable that shows his initial prescription thoughts of Dongmu Jema Lee along with DSSC, the understanding Lee's prescription is needed to be studied through cross-review with DSSC and DSCB.

  • Objectives : Jema-sunghyangjungkisan (JSGS, Jima Xingxiang Zhengqi san) and yeoldahanso-tang (YDHST, Reduo hanshao decoction) are traditional herbal formulas which commonly used to prevent and treat stroke in traditional korean medicine. However, JSGS and YDHST extracts have not been previously reported to have anti-inflammatory effects. Therefore, We measured the anti-inflammatory effects of JSGS and YDHST extracts on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated murine macrophage cell line, RAW 264.7 cells. Methods : To investigate the anti-inflammatory activities of JSGS and YDHST extracts, tumor necrosis factor-alpha ($TNF-{\alpha}$), interleukin (IL)-6, nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin $E_2$ ($PGE_2$) were examined in RAW 264.7 cells with LPS of $1{\mu}g/m{\ell}$. Results : JSGS and YDHST extracts did not have any cytotoxicity in RAW 264.7 cells. $TNF-{\alpha}$ concentration decreased 49.67% at $500{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ by JSGS but, YDHST has no statistically significant effect at all concentration. IL-6 accumulation on JSGS and YDHST extracts in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells reduced 22.03% and 41.44% at $500{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ respectively. In addition, JSGS has no inhibitory effects on NO accumulation and YDHST reduced 10.08% at $500{\mu}g/m{\ell}$. Moreover, JSGS and YDHST treatment does-dependently reduced the $PGE_2$ production. In particular, YDHST ($500{\mu}g/m{\ell}$) extract was more effective compared with $10ng/m{\ell}$ of indomethacin which is the $PGE_2$ positive control. Conclusions : Our results suggest that treatment of JSGS and YDHST extracts decreased the LPS-stimulated inflammation. Therefore, in the present study, we demonstrated that JSGS and YDHS may be used as a potential anti-inflammatory therapeutic agent.

  • Objective : In this study, I would like to emphasize the importance of context in studying quoted verses in "Donguisusebowon". Method : First, methodology applied in researches on "Donguisusebowon" quotations were organized. Next, in order to examine the effects of the aforementioned methodology, several quoted verses were approached in such method. Result : First, the verse, 'In cases of Dry-Feces(大便秘燥), Rheum undulatum Linne(大黃) could be used in the medicinal formulas and treatment, but not Croton tiglium Linne(巴豆)'. In the texts of Shanghanlun(傷寒論), Zhang, Zhongjing(張仲景) prescribed Sammulbaeksan(三物白散) in treating 'Gyeolhyung due to Excessive cold'(寒實結胸), which includes Croton tiglium Linne(巴豆). From this, we can see that Lee, jema's statement in "Donguisusebowon" is false. Conclusion : Lee, jema's mistake was that he accepted Shanghanlun(傷寒論) as quoted in "Donguibogam", instead of the original text, accidently quoting Heo, jun's source of reference.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to examine the meaning of the Soeumin's Watery diarrhea with little residue(下利淸水). Methods We examined the Watery diarrhea with little residue and Daeseunggi-tang(大承氣湯) in 『Sanghanlun(傷寒論)』, and considered the quotation and the treatment of the Watery diarrhea with little residue in 『Donguisusebowon(東醫壽世保元)』. Afterward, we considered the meaning of the Soeumin's Watery diarrhea with little residue by comparing the view of Junggyeong Jang and Jema Lee. Results and Conclusion 1. Jaricheongsu Saeksuncheong(自利淸水 色純靑) is an expression about the aspect of the Watery diarrhea in 『Sanghanlun』. Especially, Saeksuncheong(色純靑) means there is no residue in Watery diarrhea, and is an expression to distinguish from Haricheonggok(下利淸穀). 2. Haricheongsu(下利淸水) is the Watery diarrhea with little residue in 『Donguisusebowon』. It is caused by the coldness of the Soeumin and should be understood separately from Harihwangsu(下利黃水). 3. Considering the characteristics of the Soeumin, Jema Lee divided the aspects of the Watery diarrhea according to turbidity. Then, he suggested Gwangyebujaijung-tang(官桂附子理中湯) in the warm method(溫法), Seed of Crotonis Fructus(巴豆) in the diarrhea method(下法), and Gangchulgwanjung-tang(薑朮寬中湯) in the warm method after using the diarrhea method as the treatment of the Watery diarrhea with little residue, and aimed to treat the coldness of the Soeumin.

  • Purpose : This study compares prescriptions in the 1901 edition of the Donguisusebowon (東醫壽世保元) and the 1901 edition of 24 Revised Tae-eum constitution prescriptions (新定太陰人病應用要藥二十四方) (1901PCDT) with medical herbs found in classical texts. This study also examines whether to include patterns which compose medical herbs for the person of Tae-eum constitution (太陰人). Method : The prescriptions for Tae-eum-in in the Shinchukbon and the ingredients of medical herbs of the prescriptions of the Complete Works of Zhang Jingyue (景岳全書), Secret Works of Universal Benefit (廣濟秘笈), Treasured Mirror of Eastern Medicine (東醫寶鑑), Comprised Edition for Formulas (方藥合編), Protecting Essence for Longevity (壽世保元), Introduction to Medicine (醫學入門), New Book for Saving People (濟衆新編 ENGLISH), and Compendium of Local Medicinals and Formulas (鄕藥集成方) were input into a database. The prescriptions were examined and combinations of medical herbs used to treat the person of Tae-eum constitution were noted. Result : Among the prescriptions for the person of Tae-eum constitution, similar examples of the 17 prescriptions of Kudzu Decoction to Relieve the Muscles (葛根解肌湯), Regulate the Stomach and Coordinate the Purity Decoction (調胃升淸湯), Clear the Heart and Lotus Pip Decoction (淸心蓮子湯), Decoction for Stabilizing Asthma with Ephedra (麻黃定喘湯), Profuse Heat and Sparse Cold Decoction (熱多寒少湯), Decoction for Coordinating Qi with Kudzu (葛根承氣湯), Major Decoction for Coordinating Qi with Kudzu (葛根大承氣湯), Minor Decoction for Coordinating Qi with Kudzu (葛根小承氣湯), Decoction for Dispersing the Exterior with Ephedra (麻黃發表湯), Boost the Lung Essence Decoction (補肺元湯), Major Supplementing Decoction with Deer Antler Velvet (鹿茸大補湯), Boosting Black Essence Pill (拱辰黑元丹), Honeylocust Fruit and Rhubarb Decoction (皂角大黃湯), Kudza and Duckweed Decoction (葛根浮萍湯), Sweet Flag and Polygala Powder (石菖蒲遠志散), Liriopis and Polygala Decoction Powder (麥門冬遠志散), and Cattle Gallstone Formula to Clear the Heart (牛黃淸心元) were found in important ancient literature and Dried Chestnut and Holotrichia Decoction (乾栗蠐螬湯) and Dried Chestnut and Tree of Heaven Root Bark Decoction (乾栗樗根皮湯) are the combination originally set by Lee Jema. Conclusion : Because 70.8% of the prescriptions in 1901PCDT could be found in literature which were pervasive in the period of the Joseon Dynasty (the period of Ming and Qing), it corresponds with Lee Jema's view that medical men in the Song, Yuan, and Ming Dynasties disclosed half of the prescriptions for Tae-eum person by studying these texts more.

  • 1. Objectives: This study reviews the general theory on Li-Qi (理-氣) found in Dongmu Lee Jema (東武 李濟馬) and Nosa Gi Jeongjin (蘆沙 奇正鎭)'s works and explores the associations between their philosophical systems. 2. Methods: The main ideas on Predisposition (氣稟論) found in Dongmu's works were explored in connection with the Li-Qi (理-氣) theory and compared with the perspectives suggested by Nosa. 3. Results and Conclusions 1) Nosa criticized the "weakened supervision of Li (理)" and the "separation of Li (理) and Qi (氣)", proposing that this problem can be overcome through "mutual embracement of Li and its manifestations (理分圓融 理分相涵)". 2) When Dongmu's theory on Predisposition (氣稟論) is interpreted in terms of Li-Qi (理-氣), the Seong-Li (laws governing the organ scheme) (性理(臟理)) represents the Li (理) while the formational variations in organ scheme(臟局短長) and and the level of self-cultivation (心地淸濁) represents the Qi (氣). 3) The concept of "Diversification of Li (理之異)", bearing similarities to Nosa's Li-Qi (理-氣) theory, was introduced for the first time in Dongmu's theory on Predisposition (氣稟論), which presumably built the fundamental theories in the Sasang Constitutional Typology. 4) Within Dongmu's theory of Predisposition (氣稟論) can be found a dichotomous division of "similitude between the morally unaccomplished and the morally accomplished" in the ontological plane and "dissimilitude between the morally unaccomplished and the morally accomplished" in the axiological plane; this dichotomy is more extensive and developed compared to Nosa's attempt to find a consistent logic in both the ontological and axiological plane through a Li-Qi (理-氣) structure with Li-predominance.

  • This paper studies the main treatment methods, Ikgi(益氣) and Seung-yang(升陽) applied frequently by Lee Jema(李濟馬) on the exterior disease of So-eumin(少陰人), one of the four constitutions. The methodology of this paper is to understand the pharmacology of "Dong-uisusebowon(東醫壽世保元)" by examining the formulas applied by Lee Jema. I have examined the organization of formulas in "Dong-uisusebowon(東醫壽世保元)" beforehand to categorize the formulas applicable in this study according to an objective standard. I have analyzed the prescriptions applied to So-eumin exterior disease. As a result, I could see that in the case of Ulgwang(鬱狂) syndrome, Ikgi(益氣) and Seung-yang(升陽) methods were mainly applied, but as the disease progressed, Seung-yang(升陽) was withdrawn while Ikgi(益氣) was stressed. Likewise, in the case of Mang-yang(亡陽), both methods were mainly adopted, but as the patients got worse, the level of Seung-yang(升陽) was maintained and that of Ikgi(益氣) was elevated with the addition of Buja(附子). Through this process, we could verify the overall action of Ikgi(益氣), Seung-yang(升陽) and Buja(附子). Originally, the two methods of Ikgi(益氣) and Seung-yang(升陽) are intimately related, but by analyzing the overall functions of the two methods, we could see that Seung-yang(升陽) and Buja(附子) support the Yang gi of the interior of So-eumin, while Ikgi(益氣) resolves inner stagnation of Yang gi and emits the cold pathogen of the exterior. Also, in the course of treatment, Ikgi(益氣) could only be realized after securing Seung-yang(升陽).

  • Lee, Jema recognized human being as human figure and human nature according to 'if threre is a thing, there are a law to explain the thing'. And he thought Sa-Sang is the most basic and proper concept to explain things and changes. This paper is to find his medical view why human beings are classified into four types. 1. A medical clue to classify human being is different viscera function. 2. The size of viscera means the strength and weakness of metabolic function of viscera. 3. The essence of different viscera function is related to metabolism of water and food, air and fluid. Lungs and Liver do metabolic function through exhale and inhale of air and fluid. Spleen and Kidneys do metabolic function through intake an d output water and food. 4. It is most important to consider and to treat the condition of small size viscera.

  • According to Confucianism, the world before Confucius focused on respecting the heaven which meant that everything could be done by the heaven. After the period of Confucianism, Joo-Ja asserted that everything could be done by nature. During the Chosun Dynasty, philosophers such as Seo Kyung-duck, Lee Hwang, and Lee Yi talked about four characters and seven passions of human being. They started to focus more on the inside of human nature. During the later period of the Chosun Dynasty, a philosopher by the name of Dongmugong Lee Jema analyzed that one's nature and feelings can change his or her external matter and the function of internal organs by purity or impurity of one's mind. Based on these analysis, Dongmugong discovered 'sasangin' which puts more emphasis on one's state of mind compared to the outside the world. Also, Dongmugong tried to figure out the connections between Confucianism and medical science. If you use change fire and stone theory which is difference between hado and nock-seo to expain four seven theory one's mind could be define as four natural characters and seven feelings. From four seven theory four is ying and seven is yang. This is the method of cure and understand the structure of human body. And also, four natural characters and seven feelings can be divided into heaven and earth. You can see Four natural characters is far more similar to heaven and seven feelings are similar to earth. According to four-seven theory hado is permanent and you can find out 'sasangin' is permanent also. Since seven feelings are influenced by sam-jae, you can analogize there are 21 different types in 'sasangin'. An underlying principle should there be 28 different types of sasangin instead of 21 different types of sasangin but one quater of sasangin is hidden according to samhyuniljang theory. All creations in the world are organized by unification of the great absolute and symmetry distinction of yingyang. With these facts identity of the heaven, earth and man which is named samjae generates symbols of independent sasang. And also, sasang generates relations between five element, six energy and the six family relation. From six family relation comes seven feelings of man which creates a category of the eight trigrams for divination and unification of nine palace. All these process are united.

  • Objectives On the point of modern preventive medicine, Sasang Constitutional Meidicine(SCM) has the thoughts of preventive medicine. Modern preventive medicine has the three dimensional prevention; primary, secondary and tertiary prevention. The preventive thoughts of SCM concerning three dimensional prevention have been investigated in this article. Method Materials and references were collected about the prevention of SCM. Lee Jema's books such as Donguisusebowon, Gyeokchigo and Donguisusebowon Chobonguen were included. Result and Conclusions As the primary prevention of SCM, Regimen according to ages, explanation according to health index as Myeongmaeksilsu(命脈實數), moderation of four ruinous causes such as intoxication, seduction, opulence and authority, adequate social life and control of 4 kinds of emotions(sorrow, anger, joy and pleasure) are included. As the secondary prevention of SCM, explanation according to disease index, fragile Organs and frequently acquired diseases according to constitutions are included. As the tertiary prevention of SCM, rehabilitation for the stroke patients according to constitutions is included. In conclusion, SCM has all of 3 dimensional prevention methods although that might be applied with modern considerate modification.
