Quality Changes of Muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) by Maturity during Distribution (숙도가 머스크멜론(Cucumis melo L.)의 유통 중 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • The quality change of musk melons, divided into ripened (90 days) and over-ripened (92 days) set by the formal day maturing melons, was investigated during marketing period at both 10 and $25^{\circ}C$. The rate of weight loss was increased in all samples as the storage period passed and greater in ripened melons than over-ripened melon. The hardness decreased in both well and over-ripened melon as the storage period passed. Furthermore, changes in hardness were prevented in fruit stored at $10^{\circ}C$ compared to fruit stored at $25^{\circ}C$. Immediately after harvest, the solid solubility of over-ripened melon was 14.6%, while that of ripened fruit was 12.8%. The respiration rate of both well and over-ripened melon increased temporarily when stored at $25^{\circ}C$, which is characteristic of climacteric fruits during the first day of storage; however, no change in respiration rate was observed in fruit stored at $10^{\circ}C$. When sensory evaluation was conducted, there were no differences observed in flavor and taste among samples. However, with the exception of over-ripened melon, the texture of all samples increased significantly with storage time when melon was stored at $25^{\circ}C$. The score of overall acceptability remained high for 12 days in both well and over-ripened melon, while that of ripened melon stored at $10^{\circ}C$ and over-ripened melon stored $25^{\circ}C$ remained high for 7 and 5 days, respectively (p<0.05).

  • A model experiment on the pair midwater trawl net which is prevailing in Denmark is carried out to get the basic data available for Korean pair bottom trawlers. The model net was made in 1/30 scale considering the Tauti's Similarity law of fishing gear and the dimension of experimental tank. The vertical opening, horizontal opening, towing tension and net working depth of the model net were determined in the tank within the towing velocity 0.46~1.15m/sec, front weight 15.5~62.0g and distance between paired boats 5~8m(which correpond to 2~5k't in towing velocity, 70~280kg in weight and 150~240m in distance respectively in the prototype net). The results got from the model experiment can be converted into the full scale net as follows; 1. Vertical opening showed the largest value of 32m at the condition of 2k't in towing velocity, 280kg in front weight and 150m in the distance between paired boats, and the smallest value of 6m at the condition of 5k't in towing velocity, 70kg in front weight and 240m in the distance between paired boats. 2. Horizontal opening showed the largest value of 45m at the condition of 5k't in towing velocity, 70kg in front weight and 240m in the distance between paired boats, and the smallest value of 33m at the condition of 2k't in towing velocity, 280kg in front weight and 150m in the distance between paired boats. 3. Towing tension showed the largest value of 10, 000kg at the condition of 5k't in towing velocity, 280kg in front weight and 240m in the distance between paired boats, and the smallest value of 1, 600kg at the condition of 2k't in towing velocity, 70kg in front weight and 150m in the distance between paired boats. 4. Net working depth showed the largest value of 38m at the condition of 2k't in towing velocity, 280kg in front weight and 150m in the distance between paired boats, and the smallest value of 6m at the condition of 5k't in towing velocity, 70kg in front weight and 240m in the distance between paired boats. 5. Net opening area showed the largest value of 1, 100m super(2) at the condition of 2k't in towing velocity, 280kg in front weight and 180m in the distance between paired boats, and the smallest value of 250m super(2) at the condition of 5k't in towing velocity, 70kg in front weight and 240m in the distance between paired boats.

Effects of Fermented Diet Using Probiotics from Pine Needle Microbes on Growth Performance, Blood Characteristics, Carcass Traits and Economy of Pigs (솔잎 토착미생물을 이용한 발효사료 급여가 돼지의 성장, 혈액성상, 도체형질 및 경제성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of probiotic from pine needle microbes on growth performance, blood characteristics, carcass traits and economy of pigs. One hundred eighty pigs (L${\times}$Y${\times}$D, average body weight=75 kg) were grouped and housed with 15 animals per pen for 3 replications per each treatment. The ingredients and pine needle microbes mixed and fermented on anaerobic condition for 10 days to make the fermented diet. The basal diet was substituted with 0 (CON), 3 (T1), 5 (T2) and 10% (T3) of fermented diet, the pigs were fed for 42 days and slaughtered at the end of the trial to measure the carcass traits. Crude protein concentration of fermented diet on 10 day was higher (p<0.05) than that of on 0 day, while crude fiber concentration and pH were lower (p<0.05). The supplementation of fermented diet did not affect on growth performance and feed intake. Hemoglobin concentration of whole blood in T3 was higher (p<0.05) than that of CON, and hematocrit concentrations in CON and T1 were higher (p<0.05) than that of T2 and T3. The concentration of platelet was higher (p<0.05) in T1 than in T2 and T3. The CON had higher (p<0.05) total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides concentrations than the treatments, whereas lower (p<0.05) HDL-cholesterol concentration. Carcass weight and dressing in T1 and T3 were higher (p<0.05) than those of CON and T2. The backfat thickness was higher (p<0.05) in CON and T2 than in T3. The carcass grade and economy improved by supplementation of fermented diet compare to CON. In conclusion, the supplementation of fermented diet using probiotics from pine needle microbes could improve health and meat quality and reduce the feed cost of pigs.

Effects on the Levels of Dietary Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) Produced from Bio-Diesel By-Products on the Production and Composition of Dairy Cow Milk (바이오디젤유 부산물로 제조한 conjugated linoleic acid(CLA)의 첨가 수준이 젖소의 산유량 및 유성분에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to determine the effects of increasing the dietary levels of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) which is produced from bio diesel by-products, on milk yield, milk composition, and blood metabolites of mid-lactating dairy cows. A total of 20 mid-lactating dairy cows ($631{\pm}25.0kg$) were assigned to one of four treatment groups and fed twice daily an equal amount of a basal diet ($NE_L$ 32 Mcal/d, CP 17%) contained 12kg/d of concentrate, 15kg/d of corn silage and 4kg/d of the hay mixture (tall fescue+orchard grass). Conjugated linoleic acid were fed for 2 weeks of adaptation periods and 4 weeks of collection periods at 0 (Control), 50 (T1), 100 (T2) and 150g/d (T3), respectively. By the increases of dietary CLA supplementation, milk yield and 4% fat corrected milk increased, whereas milk fat content decreased (p<0.05). The concentrations of stearic acid and oleic acid decreased with increasing dietary CLA supplementation, while the concentrations of total CLA increased (p<0.05). In conclusion, this study shown that the supplementation of dietary CLA manufactured from bio diesel by-products could improve milk yield and CLA concentrations of milk in mid-lactating dairy cows.

The Nutritive Value of Grains from Barley Cultivars (Wooho, Youngyang, Yuyeon) (청보리 종실의 품종별(우호, 영양, 유연) 사료가치 평가)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the nutritive value of grains from barley cultivars (wooho, youngyang and yuyeon) for substitution of the feedstuffs as corn and soybean meal. In results of proximately analysis, the crude protein concentration was significantly higher (p<0.05) in barley grains than in corn and the crude fat concentration was significantly lower (p<0.05) in barley grains than in soybean meal. The metabolism energy of barley grains was significantly lower (p<0.05) than corn and it was higher (p<0.05) than soybean meal. The in vitro results of pepsin digestibility was significantly higher (p<0.05) in soybean meal than in barley grains and corn, and it was similar barely grains with corn. Barley grains significantly higher (p<0.05) the composition of saturated fatty acids than corn and soybean meal, while lower (p<0.05) the compositions of unsaturated fatty acids and essential fatty acidsin barley grain. The composition of linolenic acid, concentration of lysine and mineral was significantly higher (p<0.05) in barley grains than in corn, while lower (p<0.05) than soybean meal. Therefore, the barley grains is sufficient for substitution of corn. Moreover, the barley grain of yuyeon has high concentrations of crude protein, metabolism energy, lysine and minerals compared with barley grains of wooho and youngyang.

Life-time Prediction of a FKM O-ring using Intermittent Compression Stress Relaxation (CSR) and Time-temperature Superposition (TTS) Principle (간헐 압축응력 완화와 시간-온도 중첩 원리를 이용한 FKM 오링의 수명 예측 연구)

  • Intermittent CSR testing was used to investigate the degradation of an FKM O-ring, also the prediction of its life-time. An intermittent CSR jig was designed taking into consideration the O-ring's environment under use. The testing allowed observation of the effects of friction, heat loss, and stress relaxation by the Mullins effect. Degradation of O-rings by thermal aging was observed between 60 and $160^{\circ}C$. In the high temperature of range ($100-160^{\circ}C$) O-rings showed linear degradation behavior and satisfied the Arrhenius relationship. The activation energy was about 60.2 kJ/mol. From Arrhenius plots, predicted life-times were 43.3 years and 69.9 years for 50% and 40% failure conditions, respectively. Based on TTS (time-temperature superposition) principle, degradation was observed at $60^{\circ}C$, and could save testing time. Between 60 and $100^{\circ}C$ the activation energy decreased to 48.3 kJ/mol. WLF(William-Landel-Ferry) plot confirmed that O-rings show non-linear degradation behavior under $80^{\circ}C$. The life-time of O-rings predicted by TTS principle was 19.1 years and 25.2 years for each failure condition. The life-time predicted by TTS principle is more conservative than that from the Arrhenius relationship.

Effects of Dietary Supplementation of Mulberry Leaves and Silkworm Excreta Extracts on Weight Performance, Blood Characteristics and Cecal Microflorae of Chicks (뽕잎과 잠분 추출물 급여가 육계의 생산성, 혈액 성상 및 맹장 내 미생물군에 미치는 영향)

  • The object of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation of mulberry leaves and silkworm excreta ethanol extracts on weight performances, blood characteristics, cecal microflorae of chickens. Two hundred forty male broiler chicks(Ross) were fed diets for five weeks containing 0.1%(MLA) and 1%(MLB) of mulberry leaves ethanol extracts, and 0.1%(SEA) and 1%(SEB) of silkworm excreta ethanol extracts. Weight performance did show no significant difference in all test groups which were fed with supplementation of mulberry leaves and silkworm excreta ethanol extracts. They showed better weight gain and feed conversion than the negative control group which was fed only with forage without antibiotics. ABTS(2'-azine-bis[3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid]) test was conducted to investigate free radical scavenging activity of blood in tested groups. ABTS scavenging activities of tested groups were higher than control groups in significant level, though there was no significant difference(P = 0.396). Specifically, MLB group showed the highest scavenging activity. Blood-level concentration of MDA, which is an indicator of lipid peroxidation, was also decreased in tested groups and the lowest level was observed in SEA(P = 0.001). As storage time increased at $4^{\circ}C$, muscle-level MDA concentrations of all tested groups were generally increased and significant difference was obsereved between tested groups and controls in total increase of MDA concentration($P=4.417{\times}10^{-3}$). In cecal microflorae, SEA and SEB showed decreased total microbe population compared to NC($P=6.462{\times}10^{-5}$) and even to PC. Supplementation of mulberry leave and silkworm excreta ethanol extract did show a similar inhibition effect against Salmonella sp., furthermore, MLB did enhanced the growth of Lactobacillus sp.($P=3.636{\times}10^{-7}$). In summary, ethanol extract of silkworm excreta may be a potential alternative of antibiotics for chicks. In addition, both of ethanol extracts supplementation to broiler chicks would be very useful not only to improve antioxidant effect of blood but also to suppress lipid peroxidation without any loss of weight performance in poultry farming.

Distribution of Flora and Naturalized Plants in Gwangpo Bay, Sacheon (사천시 광포만의 식물상 및 외래식물 분포)

  • This study aimed to provide basic data for efficient flora management of vascular plants, halophytes, and naturalized plants in the Gwangpo Bay area in Sacheon city, Gyeongsangnam-do. The flora found in this area incorporated 520 taxa, including 93 families, 299 genera, 466 species, 3 subspecies, 41 varieties, and 10 forma, and accounted for approximately 10.6% of total vascular plants (4,884 species) in Korea. According to the survey, 76 species of Gramineae showed the highest frequency (14.6%), followed by 67 species of Compositae (12.8%), 34 species of Leguminosae (6.5%), 27 species of Cyperaceae (5.2%), and 22 species of Rosaceae (4.2%). Rare plant species designated by the Korea Forest Service were categorized into six taxa, including three taxa in the LC grade, one taxon in the CR grade, one taxon in the VU grade, and one taxon in the EN grade. Korea endemic plants belonged to nine taxa consisting of seven families, seven genera, and nine species. The special floristic plants included 44 taxa, including one taxon (Prunus yedoensis) in the V grade, four taxa in the IV grade, ten taxa in the III grade, six taxa in the II grade, and 23 taxa in the I grade. Naturalized plants included 62 taxa consisting of 15 families, 47 genera, 59 species and 3 varieties. Halophytes consisted of 27 taxa, including 13 families, 24 genera, 24 species, 2 varieties, 1 forma, which consisted of Atriplex gmelinii, Suaeda glauca, Suaeda maritima, and Lathyrus japonicus. Invasive alien species in the Gwangpo Bay area included seven taxa. Since Ambrosia artemisiifolia, Sicyos angulatus, andPaspalum distichum var. indutummay have harmful effects on native plants, these plants must be artificially controlled.

Anti-inflammatory Activities of Antimicrobial Peptide Locustacin Derived from Locusta migratoria in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 Cells (풀무치 유래 항균 펩타이드 locustacin의 항염증 활성)

  • Locusta migratoria is a widespread locust species in many parts of the world and is considered an alternative source for the production of protein for value-added ingredients. We previously identified putative antimicrobial peptides derived from L. migratoria through an in silico analysis of its transcriptome. However, its anti-inflammatory effect has not been studied. In this study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory activities of the antimicrobial peptide locustacin (KTHILSFFPSFLPLFLKK-NH2) derived from L. migratoria on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophage cells. Locustacin (50, 100, and 200 ㎍/ml) significantly reduced the production of nitric oxide (NO) in LPS-stimulated macrophages without any cytotoxicity. Locustacin also inhibited the mRNA and protein expression of pro-inflammatory mediators, such as inducible NO synthase and cyclooxygenase-2, in contrast to the presence of LPS alone. Locustacin decreased the release of LPS-induced pro-inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-1β, and their gene expression in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, locustacin (100 and/or 200 ㎍/ml) inhibited phosphorylation levels of extracellular signal regulated kinase, p38, and c-Jun N-terminal kinase. Locustacin also suppressed the degradation of inhibitory kappa B alpha, which was considered to be an inhibitor of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB). Collectively, these results demonstrate that locustacin can exert anti-inflammatory effects through the inhibition of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) phosphorylation, activation of NF-κB, and downstream inflammatory mediators in LPS-stimulated macrophage cells.

Changes in Fatty Acid Composition and Phytosterol Content During Ripening Period of the Autumn-Sown Waxy Corn (가을재배 찰옥수수의 등숙에 따른 지방산 조성 및 Phytosterol 함량 변화)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the changes in fatty acid composition and phytosterol content of the autumn sowing waxy corn during its ripening period for the production of high quality and value-added fresh ears. The content of crude oil in the waxy corn kernels steadily increased with days after pollination(DAP); the crude oil content in Heukjinjuchal (HC) was higher than that in Ilmichal (IC). The composition of fatty acids according to DAP showed a statistically significant change; palmitic and linoleic acid composition gradually decreased, but oleic acid increased, and the composition of unsaturated fatty acids in HC was higher than that in IC. The phytosterol content was increased until 33 DAP, and was 937.7 mg/100g and 867.9 mg/100g in IC and HC, respectively, but there was no statistically significant difference between the varieties. The phytosterol contents in IC varied in the following order: ${\beta}-sitosterol$ > stigmasterol > campesterol, but that in HC varied in the order ${\beta}-sitosterol$ > campesterol > stigmasterol. The campesterol content did not show significant differences between the varieties, but the stigmasterol and ${\beta}-sitosterol$ content was significantly higher in HC than in IC. Palmitic, linolieic, and linolenic acid were significantly correlated with campesterol and ${\beta}-sitosterol$, and stearic acid was positively correlated with stigmasterol. Oleic acid was positively correlated with campesterol and ${\beta}-sitosterol$ but negatively correlated with stigmasterol. As a result, it was suggested that fatty acids may affect the variation in phytosterol contents during the ripening period in waxy corn.
