  • In this study, wave pressure of short-period gravity waves and tsunami acting on the upright section of the horizontal-slit type caisson placed on the impermeable or permeable seabed, which is a well-known permeable breakwater with a good wave controlling ability, are investigated via numerical simulations. Further, the permeable seabed was modeled as the porous media with porosity of 0.4. Using the numerical results, the effects of the seabed conditions on the wave pressure on the front wall and inside wall of the chamber have been studied. In the numerical simulations, short-period gravity waves and tsunami(solitary wave or bore) with the same amplitude to the gravity wave are considered. A numerical wave tank is used, which is able to consider a gas-liquid two-phase flow in the same calculation zone. Numerical results show that the wave pressure of the tsunami was 3~5 times higher than the short-period gravity waves acting on the front wall and it was 2~4 times higher than the short-period gravity waves acting on the inner wall.

  • Benzylideneacetone (BZA) is a compound derived from culture broth of an entomopathogenic bacterium, Xenorhabdus nematophila (Xn). Its immunosuppressive activity is caused by its inhibitory activity against eicosanoid biosynthesis. This BZA is being developed as an additive to enhance control efficacy of other commercial microbial insecticides. This study was focused on the enhancement of the immunosuppressive activity of BZA by generating its chemical derivatives toward decrease of its hydrophobicity. Two hydroxylated BZA and one sugar-conjugated BZA were chemically synthesized. All derivatives had the inhibitory activities of BZA against phospholipase $A_2$ ($PLA_2$) and phenoloxidase (PO) of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella, but BZA was the most potent. Mixtures of any BZA derivative with Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) significantly increased pathogenicity of Bt. BZA also inhibited colony growth of four plant pathogenic fungi. However, BZA derivatives (especially the sugar-conjugated BZA) lost the antifungal activity. These results indicated that BZA and its derivatives inhibited catalytic activities of two immune-associated enzymes ($PLA_2$ and PO) of P. xylostella and enhanced Bt pathogenicity. We suggest its use to control plant pathogenic fungi.

  • A remote sensing pheromone trap called IT pheromone trap (Korean patent: 10-0982563) was applied to monitor overwintering population changes of the oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta, for three successive years in apple orchards. Males of the overwintering populations were attracted during April and May. However, the occurrence peak was delayed and extended to early June in 2010, at which the average spring temperature was significantly lower than the previous years. These overwintering populations could be monitored by the remote-sensing pheromone trap. When the remote-sensing pheromone traps were deployed to apple orchards of different provinces in Korea in 2010, the maximal overwintering populations of G. molesta were monitored at May in all areas. However, the population sizes monitored were significantly different among different localities. This study suggests a practical application of IT pheromone trap to monitor G. molesta in field conditions.

  • The conversion of failing Fontan circuit to total cavopulmonary connection(TCPC) is recommended as a therapeutic option in patients with late Fontan complications such as atrial arrhythmia, atrial enlargement, pulmonary venous obstruction, and ventricular dysfunction. Combined TCPC with extracardiac conduit and cryoablation of arrhythmia circuit is preferred for treatment of failing Fontan coulection with atrial lachyarrhythrnia. We report a case of conversion of atriopulmonary connection to extracardiac conduit Fontan and cryoablation of atrial arrhythmia circuit in a patient with tricuspid atresia, who also had ectopic atrial tachycardia, right atrial thrombi, pulmonary venous obstruction, and ventricular dysfunction. This patient and the parents were Jehovah's Witnesses; therefore, the patient underwent the procedure without blood transfusion.

  • This study identified the dynamic process of sandbar and vegetation distribution of the sandbar on the Tan-cheon River. The study area is located in the lower reaches of the Tan-cheon River that has been managed as an Ecosystem Reserve Area since 2002. For the study, the geomorphological process was analyzed through mapping analysis using a satellite image followed by analysis of the vegetation distribution through an on-site survey. The major findings were as follows : First, In the fluvial geomorphic process, various kinds of sandbars were developed in 1990s, the morphologic characteristics changing continuously. Second, In the distribution of vegetation on the sandbar, the sandbar shore was covered with bare sand substrate or intermittent annual vegetation because of the periodic fluctuation of the water-level due to intensive disturbances. Third, In the relationship between the sandbar formation and vegetation, four types of sandbars were classified: channel-shore stable bar, channel-shore unstable bar, mid-channel stable bar and mid-channel unstable bar, according to the fluvial disturbance & vegetation process. The study verifies that the vegetation distribution is reciprocally related to the geomorphological process. Accordingly, it is meaningful in the selection of plant species and the planting area of the sand bar. However, it is limited to the planting guidelines on river restoration projects. More diverse on-site experimental studies should be conducted.

  • The qualities of ginger prepared by an MPD (molecular press dehydration) method using maltodextrin, or dried using reused dehydration liquid, or prepared by freeze-drying or hot-air drying, were compared in terms of approximate overall composition, color, water absorption index, water solubility index, total sugar level, reducing sugar concentration, antioxidant activity, and gingerol content. The approximate composition of ginger prepared by the MPD method was lower in overall biochemical content than were those of gingers prepared using other methods. Ginger prepared by the MPD method retained the original ginger color. The water absorption and solubility index of ginger prepared by the MPD method (using maltodextrin) were better than those of gingers dried using other methods. The total sugar content did not change noticeably upon processing. The reducing sugar content of ginger prepared by hot-air drying was low. The antioxidant activity of ginger prepared by the MPD method was higher than that of freeze-dried and hot air-dried ginger samples, with values lower than those of BHA (3(2)-t-Butyl-4-hydroxyanisole) and BHT (2,6-Di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol). The gingerol content of ginger prepared by the freeze-drying method was higher than that of gingers prepared by other methods. However, ginger constituents were present in the dehydration liquid used in the MPD method. The results indicate that both the MPD method (using maltodextrin) and the use of reused dehydration liquid are efficient methods by which ginger can be dried.

  • This study was done to accept basic data on chemical components in rhizome of native Polygonatum species in Korea. In mineral contents of their rhizome, total nitrogen, potassium, calcium, magnesium and sodium concentration were higher in Polygonatum inflatum, P. humile and P. odoratum var. pluriflorum 1 than the other species in all the sampling dates. P. odoratum var. pluriflorum 1, P. odoratum var. pluriflorum 2 and P. inflatum showed relatively higher iron and mananese contents but P. odoratum var. pluriflorum 1 and P. stenophyllum did in copper content on November 20. Total sugar was acculated in later growth stages, although P. stenophyllum had the highest content but P. lasianthum var. coreanum had the lowest in all the sampling dates. Protein content was the highest in P. lasianthum var. coreanum but the lowest in P. stenophyllum in all the sampling dates. The major amino acids in their rhizomes were arginine followed by glutamic acid, and total and essential amino acid content were abundant in P. lasianthum var. coreanum and P. humile.

  • For the effective utilization of the fish bone waste from seafood industry, the physical properties of the isolated hydroxyapatite from tuna bon have been investigated. On X-ray measurements, the chemical formula and phase of the bone calcined by various temperature were detected as $Ca_{10}\;(PO_4)_6\;(OH)_2$, and hydroxyapatite, respectively. It was shown that the chemical properties of apatite separated from tuna bone were controlled by Ca/P ratio. The mean agglomerate particle diameter was changed as a function of temperature. However, the particle shape has a geometrically non-regular types. These trends are consistent with SEM images. The composition of the glass-ceramic batch by calcined tuna bone was not perfectly agreed with the suggested data, but the partially substituted composition possibly shows the application of it as a bioceramic material.

  • In this study, we investigated the effects of dietary supplementation (n = 40 pigs/treatment) with bamboo powder (0, 1, 2 and 3%) for 38 days. We evaluated growth performance, blood metabolites, and carcass characteristics of fattening pigs and gas emission and microbial populations in pig manure, to obtain data on pork producers for environmental management. We obtained the following results. First, supplementation with increasing amounts of bamboo powder had a significant (P < 0.05) effect on feed intake, feed efficiency, and glucose contents (except for initial and final body weight, weight gain, carcass characteristics, and blood urea nitrogen). In terms of blood metabolites, glucose and blood urea nitrogen tended to decrease with increasing amounts of bamboo powder. Second, the amounts of ammonia, methane, amine, hydrogen sulfide, and acetic acid were reduced by increasing amounts of bamboo powder when compared with the controls (P < 0.05). However, there were no significant differences in pH, propionic acid, iso-butyric acid, butyric acid, iso-valeric acid, and valeric acid among all treatments. The lowest gas emission was observed when 3% bamboo powder was used. Third, supplementation with increasing amounts of bamboo powder tended (P < 0.05) to increase the total number of bacteria, Lactobacillus spp., and yeast, but E. coli, Salmonella spp., and Shigella spp. were not detected in any treatment. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that supplementation with bamboo powder was effective in reducing gas emission and inhibiting pathogen populations in pig manure by lowering the pH of the manure.
