The Effect of Central Neural Adaptation by Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (신경근전기자극에 의한 중추신경원의 순응효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to study for the change of neural adaptation by muscle contraction force when neuromuscular electrical stimulation(NMES) was applied. Sixteen subjects(8 male, 8 female) without neuromuscular disease volunteered to participate in the study. All subjects were divided into two subgroups: control(no electrical stimulation) group, NMES(50% maximal voluntary isometric contraction) group. NMES training program was performed in the calf muscle over three times a week for 12 weeks. Before and after experiment MVIC of ankle plantar flexor was measured by use of dynamometer. H-reflex and V-wave in tibial nerve were measured. The following results were obtained; MVIC and V/Mmax ratio were significantly increased in the electrical stimulation groups. However, H/Mmax ratio was not changed. It was closely relationship between MVIC and V/Mmax ratio. In this study, the effect of neural adaptation of central neural adaptation was found in this study. Accordingly, NMES means not only a change of muscle fiber and skeletal muscle volume but also a effect of neural adaptation of central neural drive. Also, it was found that there was closely relationship between MVIC and neural adaptation of central neural drive by NMES.

Effects on Nociceptive Neuron Excitability by application of Electroacupuncture and Meloxicam gel in Rat with Inflammation (염증유발 백서에서 전침자극과 Meloxicam gel 적용이 유해성굴곡반사 및 체성감각유발전위에 미치는 효과)

  • This study aims to examine the effects on nociceptive neuron excitability by application of electroacupuncture and Meloxicam gel in rat with inflammation. It used 24 rats for experiment, divided them into control group, electroacupuncture group(EA group), Meloxicam group(ME group), combination of electroacupuncture with Meloxicam group(EA+ME group), caused hyperalgesia by injecting ${\lambda}$-carrageenan into hindpaw and conducted treatment three times for experimental period. Noxious flexion withdrawal reflex(NFR) and somatosensory evoked potential(SEP) were measured immediately after induction, at 24 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours after induction. Change of NFR(reaction time, RMS) showed no significant differences among EA group, Meloxicam group, and EA+Meloxicam group, but all treatment groups showed significant differences compared to control group from 48 hours. In NFR threshold, there were significant differences between EA+Meloxicam and other groups. In SEP amplitude, there were significant differences between EA+Meloxicam and control group from 48 hours. This study showed that EA+Meloxicam gel had an effect on nociceptive neurone excitability. Therefore, it is considered that appropriate combination of anti-inflammatory drug with electroacupuncture for pain control will be very desirable.

Influence of Functional Electrical Stimulation during Gait Training on Motor Unit Action Potential (기능적전기자극을 이용한 보행훈련이 편마비 환자의 하퇴근육의 근전위활동에 미치는 영향)

  • This study divided 35 hemiplegia patients into control group having standard physical therapy and gait training and functional electrical stimulation(FES) group using FES during gait training in order to examine the effects of applying FES to ankle joint dorsiflexor on motor unit action potential. Stimulation conditions of FES were pulse rate 35 pps, pulse width $250{\mu}s$, and on-time 0.3 second, treatment hour was 30 min. and treatment period was once a day for five days a week through six weeks. For functional evaluations before and after treatment, root mean square(RMS) were measured and the following conclusions were obtained. : In RMS analysis of motor unit action potential, gastrocnemius was significantly reduced in both weight bearing(p<.001) and bearing condition (p<.05). In conclusion, application of FES to hemiplegia patients in recovery stage during gait training decreased RMS and it was interpreted that it was caused by mitigation of muscular spasticity by reduction of motor unit.

The Change of Muscle Stretch Reflex and Stretch-Evoked EMG by the Water Temperature of Therapy Pool (치료 풀의 온도에 따른 근신장반사와 신장-유발 근 전위활동의 변화)

  • The purpose of this study was to describe the alteration of stretch reflex and electrical activity of lower leg muscle in cerebral palsy by the water temperature. We used ten cerebral palsy. Participants classified according to each group in $29^{\circ}C$, $32^{\circ}C$, $35^{\circ}C$ by the water temperature. All subjects participated 3 session, which at least 1 week between session. The test was measured continuously pre test, post-test by thermometer and surface electromyography(sEMG). The following results were obtained; 1. Superficial temperature were significantly decreased in $29^{\circ}C$(p<0.001) group but were significantly increased $32^{\circ}C$, $35^{\circ}C$ group(p<0.001). 2. Muscle stretch reflex were significantly decreased in $32^{\circ}C$(p<0.05) and $35^{\circ}C$(p<0.001) group. 3. Stretch-evoked EMG were significantly increased in $29^{\circ}C$ group(p<0.01). These results lead us to the conclusion that changes of stretch reflex and electrical activity of lower leg muscle in cerebral palsy were influenced by the water temperature. Therefore, a further direction of this study will be to provide more evidence that a moderate water temperature have an effect on muscle tonus in a patient with cerebral palsy.

  • A three-dimensional numerical study of the WIG-effect vehicle with a direct-underside-pressurization (DUP) system and a propeller is performed to analyze the aerodynamic forces and moments acting on the vehicle. The computational model includes all the compartments of a WIG-effect vehicle, including a propeller in the middle of the fuselage and an air chamber under the fuselage. The DUP system and propeller help considerably reduce the take-off speed and minimize the effect of the hump drag when the vehicle accelerates to take off on water. The airflow is accelerated by a propeller, and the air then enters the air chamber through a channel in the middle of the fuselage, this air helps increase the lift since the dynamic pressure of air is converted to static pressure. However, the air accelerated by the propeller produces excessive drag and creates yawing moment. It is found that the effect of yawing and rolling moments on static stability is negligible.

The Effect of Sport Drink Ingestion on the Physical Fatigue Level and Heart Rate during Prolonged Exposure in Hot Ambient Temperature in Professional Golfers (장시간 고온 환경 노출시 수분의 섭취가 프로골프선수들의 신체피로도 및 심박수에 미치는 영향)

  • We investigated the effects of prolonged exposure in hot environmental condition and ingestion of fluid on various physiological variables including plasma glucose, lactate, the rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and heart rate as well as golf putting performance. Six male professional golfers were voluntarily participated in three different putting trials which were separated by seven days of time interval period. Three different putting trials were conducted at either 20℃ or 32℃, or 32℃ + Fluid ingestion. Performing 32℃ + Fluid ingestion trial, all subject ingested sport drink as much as their body mass was decreased. For each experiment, all subjects were undertaken total 48 putting, which separated by four x 12 putting in four different time points (i.e., Rest, 1 hr, 2 hr, and 3 hr). Plasma glucose concentration was significantly decreased with hot ambient condition but it was almost fully recovered by fluid ingestion. Plasma lactate concentration was significantly higher when subjects were exposed in hot environmental condition, and it did not change with fluid ingestion. There was a no different in putting performance and psychological fatigue level (performed by GRID test) at any environmental conditions. The RPE, commonly used for evaluating of physical fatigue level, was significantly dropped by fluid ingestion which indicates lower physical fatigue level. In addition to this, heart rate (HR) was also significantly decreased after fluid ingestion. Based on these results, it was concluded that the ingestion of fluid during prolonged exposure in hot ambient condition decrease the degree of physical fatigue levels and heart rate, which will possibly improve the golf performance when exposed in extreme weather condition in summer. Applicability of CADMAS-SURF Code for the Variation of Water Level and Velocity due to Bores (CADMAS-SURF에 의한 단파의 수위 및 유속변화에 대한 예측정도의 검토)

  • This study investigates the applicability of CADMAS-SURF (Super Roller Flume for Computer Aided Design of a MArtime Structure) code basal on the Navier-Stokes solver to predict bore phenomena. The time variation of ware levels and velocities due to the bore propagation were computed for the different bore strength conditions. In order to verify the numerical results by CADMAS-SURF, laboratory experiments were also performed, using the DPIV and LDV measuring system. The numerical results were compared to the experimental data and the analytical predictions by the NSC method basal on fully nonlinear shallow-water theory by the method of characteristics. It appears that the CADMAS-SURF slightly overestimated the water-surface level measured by the laboratory experiments and its discrepancy becomes prominent as the bore strength increases. The predicted propagation speed for a bore was also slaver than that by the experiment and NSC method. However, the temporal variations in velocities were in relatively good agreement with the experimental data for all cases, except for overshooting and undershooting in the front face of a bore, which may be derived from the numerical instability. Further, CADMAS-SURF successfully simulated the decrease in the water level and velocity caused by the effects of negative waves reflected from the upstream end wall.

  • We proposed and demonstrated a tunable wavelength optical add/drop multiplexer(OADM) employing piezoactuated fiber grating pairs and polarization beam splitters. We used piezostack act as a fiber stretcher, using the fact that the resonant wavelength of the grating can be controlled by the axial strain along the fiber grating. The polarization controlled configuration showed high stability because the reflected signals from the two identical gratings are dropped or added not by interference but by polarizations of the beams. We could add and drop not noly 1549.3nm signal channel(original gratings), but also 1550.1nm(tuned gratings) with PZT actuators and in both cases, we found that the rejection of adjacent channels was more than -26dB, and signal leakage at the gratings was less than -34dB.

  • Two milling methods, dry vibration milling and wet ball milling, were used to prepare $Na_{2/3}(Ni_{1/3}Mn_{2/3})O_2$ powders as a cathode material for sodium ion batteries. The morphology and electrochemical property of the two powders with different milling processes were compared to each other. The particle size is less than $1{\mu}m$ in the dry vibration milled powder, while lots of larger particles than $1{\mu}m$ were found in the wet ball milled one. The single phase of $Na_{2/3}(Ni_{1/3}Mn_{2/3})O_2$ was obtained in the temperature range of $875{\sim}900^{\circ}C$. The discharge capacity and discharge voltage of the powder prepared by the dry process were higher than those of one prepared by the wet process.

Spatial and Temporal Variation Characteristics between Water Quality and Pollutant Loads of Yeong-il Bay (II) - Mutual Variation between Inflowing Pollutant Loads and Water Quality - (영일만 유입오염부하량과 수질의 시${\cdot}$공간적 변동특성(II) - 유입오염부하량과 수질의 상호거동 -)

  • This study investigates the distribution characteristics and relationship of water quality, and analyzes the spatial and temporal variation and distribution of the pollutant loads at Yeong-il Bay. The results of these analysis, the concentrations of nutrient loads (T-N and T-P), both appeared to be at the maximum value in November, while most small values were taken in May for the T-N, and in August for the T-P. For COD, the maximum concentration was in August, which has much precipitation during the same season, T-N was at the mean, and T-P was at the minimum value. Using the cluster analysis to develop the division of the sea basin by the dendrogram, before and after construction of Pohang New-port, the variation characteristics of water quality of Yeong-il Bay were discussed. The in flowing pollutant loads were transported to the landward by the high-density salinity water volume of the bottom layer therefore, it formed nutrient trap or coastal trapping areas of the pollutant load. By this mechanism, it is clear that the water volume with high-density nutrient exists on both sides of the Pohang New-port. Thus, the sea basins increasing concentration of the pollutant load at Yeong-il Bay are most prevalent at Hyeong-san estuary, the Pohang Old, and New-port. To improve water quality of this sea basin, the reduction of these nutrients loads should be the highest priority.
