  • In this paper we have reconstructed an armillary sphere based on the Method of an Armillary Sphere Making described in the Volume 1 of The Collection of Writings on the Scientific Instruments-Uigijipsol (儀器輯說, two volumes) edited in the 1850's by Nam Byong-Chul (南秉哲, 1817-1863) who was a famous Korean states-man-scientist. Nam achieved convenience and accuracy in the measurements of stellar positions in the manner of selective setting the equatorial, ecliptic and horizontal poles by adding a pole axis exchange ring called Jaigeukkwon (載極圈) between the Three Arrangers of Time and Four Displacements. We made use of 3-dimensional graphic software for modelling Nam's armillary sphere which consisted of five layers-eight rings. Results of simulation showed that the pole axis exchange ring functioned properly in setting the equatorial, ecliptic and horizontal coordinates simply by exchange of positions of specified holes on the ring. We ascertained that the invention of Jaigeukkwon solved inherent problems in the conventional Chinese armillary sphere in computation of real ecliptic coordinates. It was revealed that Nam Byong-Chul made great contributions in the East Asian history of armillary sphere making.

  • A bacterium, named as strain KL34, producing extracellular pectinase was isolated from soil. The mophological cheracteristics of the isolated bacterium were gram-negative, rod-shaped and endospore unformed. Production of pectinase of strain KL34 was induced only by polygalacturonic acid added to the culture media as a sole carbon source. Pectinase activity of KL34 reached a maximum value in the culture conditions of pH 8.5 at $25^{\circ}C$. Optimal medium for pectinase production was determined to the composition of 2% polygalacturonic acid, 0.25% yeast extract, 0.02% $K_2HPO_4$, 0.02% $CaCl_2$, and 0.05% KCl per liter. The pectinase activity in the culture supernatant reached the highest amount of 54 U/ml after 3 days cultivation in the optimal media.

  • Textural properties of tofu manufactured with micronized full-fat soyflour (MFS) were enhanced by the addition of soy protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, chitosan oligosaccharide and mushroom powder. The MFS solution (14.2% solid content) was converted to semi-solid tofu by a two-stage heat treatment with the addition of 4% coagulant mix. The MFS tofu was evaluated by a compression test as well as sensory evaluation. To produce the semi-solid gel (MFS tofu) with reasonably high strength and toughness, the MFS solution with 14.2% solid content and 7.0% protein had to be heat treated at 121$^{\circ}C$ for 3min. The relative toughness of MFS tofu was increased by the addition of SPI, showing a 144% increase. The toughness of MFS tofu prepared with the MFS/SPI mixture was greatly increased by the addition of WPC at the level of 0.7% and the water separation from MFS tofu was greatly reduced. Furthermore, the toughness and strength of MFS/SPI tofu was enhanced by the addition of 0.1% chitosan oligosaccharide and 0.2% mushroom powder. The sensory evaluation of the tofu fortified with SPI, chitosan oligosaccharide and mushroom powder was superior to that of MFS tofu, with a higher score for overall preference.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of pre-treatment and storage temperature and periods on the quality characteristics of ginger paste. The pH of the ginger paste remained constant during room temperature storage but increased with prolonged refrigerated storage periods. During five months of frozen storage, regardless of pre-treatment, the pH of most of the samples decreased slightly and then remained constant. In the color value of ginger paste stored at room temperature, the samples with and without chemical additives changed in color more prominently than fermented or pasteurized samples. Intriguingly, the color value for samples containing chemical additives changed more dramatically when stored under refrigerated conditions. However, the L, a, and b values of samples stored under frozen storage conditions did not change even after ten months. Most of the samples contained glucose and fructose, except for the fermented samples. The free sugar content of samples slowly decreased with increasing storage periods, while the organic acid content generally decreased also, regardless of sample type. Depending on pre-treatment and storage temperature, the gingerol content of the samples was either retained or decreased with prolonged storage time.

  • In order to understand the initial interaction of the substrates malonate, ATP, and CoA with malonyl-CoA synthetase, the catalytic product malonyl-CoA was characterized by NMR spectroscopy and molecular modeling. To assign proton and carbon chemical shifts, two-dimensional $^1H-^1H$ DQF-COSY and $^1H-^{13}C$ HMBC experiments were used. The structure of malonyl-CoA in the solution phase was determined based on distance constraints from NOESY and ROESY spectra. The structures were well-converged around the pantetheine region with the pairwise RMSD value of 0.08 nm. The solution structure exhibited a compact folded conformation with intramolecular hydrogen bonds among its carbonyl and hydroxyl groups. These findings will help us to understand the initial interaction of malonate and CoA with malonyl-CoA synthetase.

  • Most cracks in the structure occur under mixed mode loading and those fatigue crack propagation behavior heavily depends on the stress ratio. So, it is necessary to study the fatigue behavior under mixed mode loading as the stress ratio changes. In this paper, the fatigue crack propagation behavior was respectively investigated at stress ratio 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 and we changed the loading application angle into 0$^{\circ}$, 30$^{\circ}$, 60$^{\circ}$ to apply various loading mode. The mode I and II stress intensity factor of CTS specimen used in this study was calculated by the displacement extrapolation method using FEM (ABAQUS). Using both the experiment and FEM analysis, we have concluded the relationship between crack propagation rate and stress intensity factor range at each loading mode due to the variation of stress ratio. Also, when the crack propagated under given stress ratio and loading mode condition, we have concluded the dominant factors of the crack propagation rate at each case.

  • This paper documents the effect of surface treatment of aluminum on the bonding strength of aluminum/CFRP composites. The surface of aluminum panel was treated by DC plasma. The optimal treatment condition of the aluminum was determined by measuring the contact angle and T-peel strength as functions of mixture ratio of acetylene gas to nitrogen gas. The mixture ratios used were 1:9, 3:7, 5:5, 7:3, and 9:1 Lap shear tests and T-peel tests were performed using surface-treated alumiunm/CFRP composites and regular alumiunm/CFRP composites. The results showed that the contact angle was minimized and the T-peel strength was maximized iota the mixture ratio of 5:5. The results also showed that the shear strength of surface-treated alumiunm/CFRP composites was 34% greater than that of regular alumiunm/CFRP composites. The T-peel strength of surface-treated alumiunm/CFRP composites was also 5 times greater than that of regular alumiunm/CFRP composites.

  • It is well-known that the bond strength between CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) and aluminum is significantly affected by the surface treatment of the CFRP and the aluminum. This study investigates the surface treatment of CFRP to improve the T-peel strength of CFRP/aluminum composites. The surface of %CFRP([0^0]_{14})$ was treated by the ion assisted reaction method under oxygen environment. T-peel strength tests were performed based on the procedure of ASTM D1876-95. The T-peel strength of surface-treated CFRP/aluminum composites was compared with that of untreated CFRP/aluminum composites. The results showed that the T-peel strength of surface-treated CFRP/aluminum composites was about 5.5 times higher than that of untreated CFRP/aluminum composites. SEM examination showed that the improvement of T-peel strength was attributed to the uniform spread and fracture of epoxy adhesive.

  • Purpose: This study investigated different band selection methods to classify spectrally similar data - obtained from aerial images of healthy citrus canopies and citrus greening disease (Huanglongbing or HLB) infected canopies - using small differences without unmixing endmember components and therefore without the need for an endmember library. However, large number of hyperspectral bands has high redundancy which had to be reduced through band selection. The objective, therefore, was to first select the best set of bands and then detect citrus Huanglongbing infected canopies using these bands in aerial hyperspectral images. Methods: The forward feature selection algorithm (FFSA) was chosen for band selection. The selected bands were used for identifying HLB infected pixels using various classifiers such as K nearest neighbor (KNN), support vector machine (SVM), naïve Bayesian classifier (NBC), and generalized local discriminant bases (LDB). All bands were also utilized to compare results. Results: It was determined that a few well-chosen bands yielded much better results than when all bands were chosen, and brought the classification results on par with standard hyperspectral classification techniques such as spectral angle mapper (SAM) and mixture tuned matched filtering (MTMF). Median detection accuracies ranged from 66-80%, which showed great potential toward rapid detection of the disease. Conclusions: Among the methods investigated, a support vector machine classifier combined with the forward feature selection algorithm yielded the best results.
