  • Kinetic studies of the reactions of benzyl benzenesulfonates with benzylamines in methanol and acetonitrile have been carried out. The reaction was found to proceed by a dissociative $S_N2$ in MeCN but by an associative $S_N2$ mechanism in MeOH. The transition state was rather loose in MeCN whereas it was tight in MeOH, in contrast to a tighter TS in MeCN for the corresponding reactions with aniline. The reaction of benzylamine in MeOH was characteristic of the highly solvated nucleophile, benzylamine, compared to the normal reaction in MeCN.

  • The EtOAc and CH$_2$Cl$_2$ soluble fractions from the fruit body of Ganoderma applanatum showed strong aldose reductase inhibitory activity. Nine compounds were isolated from both fractions. They were identified by spectral data as D-mannitol (1), 2-methoxyfatty acid (2), cerebrosides [(2S,3R,4E,8E)-1-O-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranosyl-3-hydroxy-2-[(R)-2'-hydroxypalmitoyl]amino-9-methyl-4,8-octadecadiene] (3), daucosterol (4), 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (5), protocatechualdehyde (6), 5-dihydroergosterol (7), ergosterol peroxide (8), and cerevisterol (9). • Four new lanostane-type triterpenes were isolated from CH$_2$Cl$_2$ fraction of Ganoderma applanatum (Polyporaceae). There structures were determined as (20S)-3${\beta}$, 7${\beta}$, 20,23ζ-tetrahydroxy-1l,15-dioxolanosta-8-en-26-oic acid, (20S)-7${\beta}$,20,23ζ- trihydroxy-3,1l,15-trioxolanosta-8-en-26-oic acid, 7${\beta}$,23ζ-dihydroxy-3,11,15- trioxolanosta-8,20E(22)-dien-26-oic acid, and 7${\beta}$-hydroxy-3, 11,15,23-tetraoxolanosta-8,20E(22)-dien-26-oic acid methyl ester on the basis of spectral data.

  • Minimally invasive cryoablation is often considered for lung tumor patients with high surgical risk or inoperable metastatic lung tumors. Cryoablation is a type of thermal percutaneous ablation in which argon and helium gases are delivered via a cryoprobe to induce tissue freezing and necrosis. We report the case of a 23-year-old woman who had suffered from multiple pulmonary endometriosis with frequent intermittent hemoptysis during menstruation for 6 years prior to her visit. She was treated with cryoablation at our hospital, and since her treatment, she has been doing well with no hemoptysis for at least 6 months. Although endometriosis is a benign lung disease, cryoablation is an ideal and effective treatment option for patients with multiple endometriosis.

  • A 12-year-old, castrated male, mixed dog presented with a history of gradual abdominal distention for a year and anorexia recently, with abdominal radiographs showing a gastric pylorus distention. A solitary, pedunculated, heterogeneous mass arising from the mucosal layer in the pylorus with intact wall layers was identified during ultrasound and computed tomography. The gastric muscular layer was evenly thick. After surgical excision of the mass, histological examination confirmed hypertrophic pyloric gastropathy with polypoid growth and Helicobacter spp. infiltrating the gastric mucosal epithelium. This is the first reported diagnostic imaging case of hypertrophic pyloric gastropathy with Helicobacter spp. in a dog.

  • The family Araneidae is a group of orb-weaving spiders and is one of the most diverse groups among the order Araneae. Eighty-one species belonging to 25 genera have been recorded in Korea to date. In this study, four araneid spiders in three genera, viz., Araneus mayumiae, Araneus ogatai, Cyclosa onoi, and Plebs baotianmanensis, were discovered for the first time in Korea. Additionally, Plebs yebongsanensis is removed from synonymy of Plebs sachalinensis, and treated as a new junior synonym of P. baotianmanensis, based on a morphological comparison of females of three Plebs species. Detailed descriptions of four species are provided with accompanying photographs.

  • Recently, the worldwide demand for disposable masks has increased due to COVID-19 infections and severe air pollution. Personal masks should reduce breathe resistance while maintaining filtering performance. In this study, a solution blowing process is used to produce composite nanofiber filters to co-spin two polymers at once. The manufacture process of the various fiber diameter filter was designed, and the filtration performance and differential pressure of the prepared filter was investigated. Poly vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) and Polylactic acid (PLA) fibers were chosen to be entangled together in a layer with a diameter of 1.05 ㎛ and 0.33 ㎛. Composite nanofilters showed up to 87% filtration efficiency and 32 Pa differential pressure.

  • A 16-year-old, 7.4 kg, castrated male Cocker Spaniel presenting anorexia and weight loss was referred due to a splenic mass, and total splenectomy was performed to resolve clinical signs. Following surgery, the dog developed mild hyperkalemia (6.27 mmol/L) without any clinical symptoms. Further investigations were conducted to determine the cause of hyperkalemia. The serum-plasma potassium difference was measured (1.05 mmol/L), and pseudohyperkalemia was diagnosed. The cause of pseudohyperkalemia was considered as thrombocytosis after splenectomy. The dog did not receive any specific treatment to lower blood potassium. To our knowledge, we report the first case of post-splenectomy pseudohyperkalemia in a dog.
