We have fabricated transparent white organic light emitting diodes (WOLEDs) for lighting application. The structure property relationship of hybrid WOLEDs has been investigated and optimized devices showed high efficiency. Introduction of transparent cathode of LiF/Al/Ag into the hybrid WOLED led highly efficient WOLED with good transparency.

Currently, the energy consumption of electric lighting in an office building is accounted for more than 30% of the total energy consumption. In order to reduce the energy consumed by the indoor lighting, the daylight as a natural energy resource can play an important role in energy savings. The daylight can have positive impacts on improvement of work efficiency and productivity, and also make people feel more psychologically stable. Moreover, by using the daylight, we can definitely reduce the energy consumption in office buildings. Thus, the purpose of this study is to determine the LED dimming ratio depending on the ratio by calculating the amount of artificial illumination required according to the change of daylight by using the light simulation software that can quantify and visualize the performance of daylight. As a result, the energy savings could be obtained up to 30%.

LED lighting systems that combine lighting capability, emotional and physiological characteristics are required for lighting source and multifunctional applications. In this work, Simulation studies using optical analysis software packages, Light Tools, are presented. This is done to estimate the uniformity ratio of illuminance and photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of the periodic 2D lattice arrangements, such as square, diamond, two-way bias quadrangular, hexagonal, and Kagome lattices, under the same transmissivity, absorptance and reflectivity. It has been found out that the two-dimensional Kagome lattice arrangement exhibited high uniformity ratio of illuminance and PPFD compared to other lattices. Accordingly, these results can be used to guide a design and improve the lighting environment which in turn would maximize the uniform distributions of illuminance.

Road lighting has emerged in importance as an essential system to secure safety and visibility for drivers and pedestrians. According to the Road Lighting Standards (KS A 3701), the luminance uniformity (U0) should be 0.4, the luminance uniformity for lanes (UI) should be 0.5, and a threshold increment (TI) of 10% should be satisfied. In this study, we conducted simulations using the Relux program in which the secondary optical lens was applied to a 21 W engine. Ten LED engines were installed on a two-way four-lane road, and the simulation result satisfied the requirements with U0 0.47, UI 0.63 and TI 8%. The U0, UI, and TI were compared with the angle of the LED streetlight varied in the range of $9^{\circ}{\sim}15^{\circ}$ with $0.5^{\circ}$ intervals. The range was selected as ${\pm}25%$ of the standard inclination angle of $12^{\circ}$ according to the Road Lighting Standard. The U0 was high and the UI and TI were low when the tilting angle was in the range of $9.5^{\circ}{\sim}10.5^{\circ}$. Consequently, an optimum-design of lighting distribution was obtained for the concrete two-way four-lane road when the inclination angle was $9^{\circ}$.
We present a design and optical simulation of a cost-effective hybrid daylighting/LED system composed of mixing sunlight and light-emitting diode (LED) illumination powered by renewable solar energy for indoor lighting. In this approach, the sunlight collected by the concentrator is split into visible and non-visible rays by a beam splitter. The proposed sunlight collector consists of a Fresnel lens array. The non-visible rays are absorbed by the solar photovoltaic devices to provide electrical power for the LEDs. The visible rays passing through the beam splitters are coupled to a stepped thickness waveguide (STW) by tilted mirrors and confined by total internal reflection (TIR). LEDs are integrated at the end of the STW to improve the lighting quality. LEDs’ light and sunlight are mixed in the waveguide and they are coupled into an optical fiber bundle for indoor illumination. An optical sensor and lighting control system are used to control the LED light flow to ensure that the total output flux for indoor lighting is a fixed value when the sunlight is inadequate. The daylighting capacity was modeled and simulated with a commercial ray tracing software (LighttoolsTM). Results show that the system can achieve 63.8% optical efficiency at geometrical concentration ratio of 630. A required accuracy of sun tracking system achieved more than ±0.5o . Therefore, our results provide an important breakthrough for the commercialization of large scale optical fiber daylighting systems that are faced with challenges related to high costs.

In this paper, a software development for design of the small photovoltaic system which is used to LED lighting is presented. For optimal design of photovoltaic systems, the operating power consumption of the LED load is considered to estimate the capacity of the solar module and battery. In order to give system design engineers a high ease of use, the software tool provides a graphical user interface and monitoring function to check operation of the system prior to installation.

Phosphors with oxide host material, YAG:$Ce^{3+}$ and $(Ca,Sr,Ba)_2SiO_4:Eu^{2+}$ yellow phosphor, has been used for LED applications. The WLEDs using these phosphors are widely used for LCD backlighting, automobile, and general lighting applications since they have high conversion efficiency and good thermal and chemical stability which can meet necessary life time of LED products up to now. With advances of LED chip technology, the external quantum efficiency and driving current in chip get higher so that the phosphors for high power chip are required to maintain high conversion efficiency and stability at high temperature due to the heat dissipated from LED chips. In addition, higher color rendering index of LED lighting and color reproducibility of LCD than those of LEDs with single yellow phosphors are required. In order to overcome these technical issues rising from evolution of LED technology, new phosphors are in demand and nitride phosphors, one of the promising new candidate materials, will be discussed here.

This paper provides an novel two-stage LED driver circuit for LED lighting equipment. The proposed driver circuit reduces voltage stress in LED driver circuit by using multi-level output voltage of PFC flyback converter. The proposed circuit satisfies IEC61000-3-2 class C regulation that is applied to lighting equipment over 25W and uses PWM to control brightness of wide extent. In this paper, the principle of proposed driver circuit is presented. A prototype has been built and tested. The experimental results are presented to show the validity of the proposed circuit.
This presentation reviews the current progress in the technology of Light Emitting Diode (LED) as it relates to the LED backlight for Liquid Crystal Display (LCD). A vivid description is given about the performance of LED that is still on the rise and certain limitations of LED that is on the decline.
