  • A predictive functional relationship model is presented for the calibration problem in which the standard as well as the nonstandard measurements are subject to error. For the estimation of the relationship between the two measurements, the ordinary least squares and maximum likelihood estimation methods are considered, while for the prediction of unknown standard measurementswe consider direct and inverse approaches. Relative performances of those calibration procedures are compared in terms of the asymptotic mean square error of prediction.

  • Spherically expanding flames are used to measure flame speeds, which are derived the corresponding laminar flame speeds at zero stretch. Dimethyl Ether-Air mixtures at high pressure are studied over an extensive range of equivalence ratios. The classical shadowgraph technique is used to detect the reaction zone. In analytical methodology the optimization process using least mean squares is performed to extract the laminar flame speeds. Laminar flame speeds are compared with results reported in the literature.

  • This paper investigates the performance of Turbo equalization in wireless multipath channels. Turbo equalization mainly consists of a SISO(soft-in soft-out) equalizer and a SISO decoder. Iterative channel estimators can improve the accuracy of channel estimates by soft information fed back from the SISO decoder. Comparing iterative channel estimators with LMS(least mean square) and RLS(recursive least squares) algorithms, which are the most common algorithms to estimate and track a time-varying channel impulse response, the iterative channel estimator with RLS converges more faster than the one with LMS. However, the difference of BER(bit error rate) performances gradually decreases as the number of iterations for Turbo equalization increases.

  • In this thesis, general method using autoregressive model in the functional separation of the myoelectric signal of human arm movements are suggested. Covariance method and sequential least squares algorithm were used to determine the model parameters and the order of signal model to describe six arm movement patterns` the forearm flexion and extension, the wrist pronation and supination, rotation-in and rotation out. The confidence interval to classify the functions of arm movement was defined by the mean and standard deviation of total squares error. With the error signals of autoregressive(AR) model, the result showed that the highest success, rate was abtained in the case of 4th order, and success rate was decreased with increase of order. This technique might be applied to biomedical-and rehabilitation-engi-neering.

  • In this paper, we propose a parameter-free smoothing method for speckle images, i.e., an adaptive least squares image smoothing technique implemented in a multistep environment. The pertinent smoothing window size at a given pixel is determined by the discontinuity measure which is defined by the ratio of the local variance and mean squares of intensity values of pixels over the smoothing window centered there. The mode of the discontinuity measure at each step is estimated to replace the noise variance parameter that is required in the adaptive smoothing. Computer simulation shows that the proposed multistep technique can smooth homogeneous regions satisfactorily while preserving fine details near boundaries.

  • As rice husk ash (RHA) is not produced in controlled manufacturing process like cement, its properties vary significantly even within the same lot. In fact, properties of Rice Husk Ash Based Concrete (RHABC) are largely dictated by uncertainty leading to huge deviations from their expected values. This paper proposes a Robust Cost Optimization (RCO) procedure for RHABC, which minimizes such unwanted deviation due to uncertainty and provides guarantee of achieving desired strength and workability with least possible cost. The RCO simultaneously minimizes cost of RHABC production and its deviation considering feasibility of attaining desired strength and workability in presence of uncertainty. RHA related properties have been modeled as uncertain-but-bounded type as associated probability density function is not available. Metamodeling technique is adopted in this work for generating explicit expressions of constraint functions required for formulation of RCO. In doing so, the Moving Least Squares Method is explored in place of conventional Least Square Method (LSM) to ensure accuracy of the RCO. The efficiency by the proposed MLSM based RCO is validated by experimental studies. The error by the LSM and accuracy by the MLSM predictions are clearly envisaged from the test results. The experimental results show good agreement with the proposed MLSM based RCO predicted mix properties. The present RCO procedure yields RHABC mixes which is almost insensitive to uncertainty (i.e., robust solution) with nominal deviation from experimental mean values. At the same time, desired reliability of satisfying the constraints is achieved with marginal increment in cost.

  • This study was to introduced estimation model for optimum probabilistic rainfall intensity on hydrological area. Originally, probabilistic rainfall intensity formula have been characterized different coefficient of formula and model following watersheds. But recently in korea rainfall intensity formula does not use unionize applyment standard between administration and district. And mingle use planning formula with not assumption model. Following the number of year hydrological duration adjust areal index. But, with adjusting formula applyment was without systematic conduct. This study perceive the point as following : 1) Use method of excess probability of Iwai to calculate survey rainfall intensity value. 2) And, use method of least squares to calculate areal coefficient for a unit of 157 rain gauge station. And, use areal coefficient was introduced new probabilistic rainfall intensity formula for each rain gauge station. 3) And, use new probabilistic rainfall intensity formula to adjust a unit of fourteen duration-a unit of fifteen year probabilistic rainfall intensity. 4) The above survey value compared with adjustment value. And use three theory of error(absolute mean error, squares mean error, relative error ratio) to choice optimum probabilistic rainfall intensity formula for a unit of 157 rain gauge station.

  • In Digital On-Channel Repeaters (DOCR) of Terrestrial-DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting), there exist feedback signals generated from transmit antenna and re-entering at receive antenna. Therefore DOCR becomes unstable unless the feedback signal is properly eliminated. Previous research proposed a feedback canceller to estimate the feedback channel to deal with this problem. However formerly used estimation algorithms show unsatisfied performance in terms of convergence rate and quality although their implementations are simple. This paper applies PNLMS (Proportionate Normalized Least Mean Squares) adaptive algorithm to feedback channel estimation and evaluates the performances which solve the problem of feedback signal effectively.

  • During the process of freezing, spermatozoa suffer cold shock which increases their susceptibility to lipid peroxidation which plays an important role in ageing of spermatozoa, shortening their life span and affecting the preservation of semen. An experiment was therefore conducted to study the effect of addition of natural antioxidants into semen diluents on the preservability of buffalo semen. Split semen samples were extended in milk egg yolk diluents fortified with vitamin E (MYE), vitamin C (MYC) and control group (MYO); Tris-egg yolk diluents fortified with vitamin E (TYE), vitamin C (TYC) and control group (TYO) and evaluated for their preservabilities at 4-7$^{\circ}C$ and $37^{\circ}C$. Overall least squares mean of percent motility observed after 0, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h of preservation at 4-7$^{\circ}C$ were 66.70, 54.00, 36.80, 21.90 and 12.50, respectively while the estimates for semen extended in MYE, MYC, MYO, TYE, TYC and TYO were 44.80, 42.70, 38.70, 36.00, 35.20 and 33.00 percent, respectively. The results showed that motility was significantly (p<0.01) affected by extender (extender-antioxidant combination) and preservation interval. Overall least squares mean percent motility observed after 0, 4, 8, 12 and 24 h of preservation at $37^{\circ}C$ were 68.50, 58.90, 45.00, 38.10 and 18.10 percent, respectively, while the estimates for semen extended in MYE, MYC, MYO, TYE, TYC and TYO were 48.20, 49.30, 46.80, 45.30, 42.30 and 42.50 percent, respectively. Extender and storage interval were found to be significantly (p<0.01) affecting spermatozoa motility on room temperature preservation. The results indicated that the incorporation of antioxidants, especially vitamin E, had beneficial effect on preservability of buffalo semen.

  • Purpose: This study evaluated the feasibility of using a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) method as a preprocessing tool for visible/near-infrared spectroscopy (VIS/NIRS) with a spectroscopic transmittance dataset for predicting the internal quality of cherry tomatoes. Methods: VIS/NIRS was used to acquire transmittance spectrum data, to which a DWT was applied to generate new variables in the wavelet domain, which replaced the original spectral signal for subsequent partial least squares (PLS) regression analysis and prediction modeling. The DWT concept and its importance are described with emphasis on the properties that make the DWT a suitable transform for analyzing spectroscopic data. Results: The $R^2$ values and root mean squared errors (RMSEs) of calibration and prediction models for the firmness, sugar content, and titratable acidity of cherry tomatoes obtained by applying the DWT to a PLS regression with a set of spectra showed more enhanced results than those of each model obtained from raw data and mean normalization preprocessing through PLS regression. Conclusions: The developed DWT-incorporated PLS models using the db5 wavelet base and selected approximation coefficients indicate their feasibility as good preprocessing tools by improving the prediction of firmness and titratable acidity for cherry tomatoes with respect to $R^2$ values and RMSEs.
