  • In this paper, the effect of a propagation delay resulting from the use of an OFDM-based cellular system with a transparent mobile multi-hop relay(MMR) is initially analyzed. Then, channel estimation techniques, a least square(LS) method and a minimum mean square error(MMSE) method, for the OFDM systems with throughput enhancement(TE) MMR or cooperative MMR are proposed. The proposed channel estimation techniques can overcome the performance degradation caused by the propagation delay in TE MMR or cooperative MMR systems. It is demonstrated by computer simulation that the proposed channel estimation techniques for OFDM systems with transparent MMR are superior to the conventional techniques in terms of mean square error(MSE) and bit error rate(BER).

  • A model of apartment heating load in a district heating system could be useful in the management and utilization of energy resources, since it could predict energy usage and so could assist in the efficient use of energy resources. The heating load in a district heating system varies in a highly nonlinear manner and is subject to many different factors, such as heating area, number of people living in that complex, and ambient temperature. Thus there are few published papers with accurate models of heating load, especially in domestic literature. This work is concerned with the modeling of apartment heating load in a district heating system in winter, using the reduced least square support vector machine (LS-SVM), and with the purpose of using the model to predict heating energy usage in domestic city area. We collected 23,856 pieces of data on heating energy usage over a 12-week period in winter, from 12 heat exchangers in five apartments. Half of the collected data were used to construct the heating load model, and the other half were used to test the model's accuracy. The model was able to predict the heating energy usage pattern rather accurately. It could also estimate the usage of heating energy within of mean absolute percentage error. This implies that the model prediction accuracy needs to be improved further, but it still could be considered as an acceptable model if we consider the nonlinearity and uncertainty of apartment heating energy usage in a district heating system.

  • In digital video broadcasting-terrestrial (DVB-T), which is the European digital terrestrial television standard, the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been adopted for signal transmission. The main reasons using OFDM are to increase the robustness against the frequency selective fading and impulse noise, and to use available bandwidth efficiently. However, channel variation within an OFDM symbol destroys orthogonality between subcarriers, resulting in inter-carrier interference (ICI), which increases an error floor in proportional to maximum Doppler spread. This paper provides an ICI analysis in both time and frequency domains while existing literatures analyze the ICI effects mainly in frequency domain and proposes the algorithms that estimate the channel impulse response and channel variation using least square (LS) algorithm which is the most simple channel estimation technique. And we propose adaptive channel estimation algorithm that estimates the velocity of terminals. The simulation results show that proposed algorithm has similar performance with about 1.5% computational complexity of noise and ICI reduction LS algorithm in low speed environments.

  • The scattered pilots employed in DVB-T take advantage of the merits of both the block type and comb type pilot arrangement to increase the transmission efficiency. To estimate the channel transfer functions for data subcarriers, it is required to conduct time-frequency domain 2D estimation using the pilots. Though 2D Wiener estimator is optimal in sense of MSE (mean square error), it is too complex to implement in hardware. In this paper a new channel estimation method for the scattered pilot based OFDM system by measuring the power of AWGN and removing the noise in the LS (least square) estimate of the channel is proposed. And the simulation results reveal the proposed method outperforms the 2D linear interpolation in the fading channel.

  • Although linear channel estimation for the frequency selective fading channel has been widely deployed, its accuracy depends on the number of pilots to probe the channel. Thus, it is unavoidable to employ large number of pilots to enhance the channel estimation performance, which essentially leads to the degradation of the transmission efficiency. It even does not utilize the sparseness of the multipath channel. In this paper a sparse channel estimation scheme based on the matching pursuit algorithm and a pilot assignment method, which minimizes the coherence, are proposed. The simulation results reveal that the proposed algorithm shows superior channel estimation performance with fewer pilots to the LS based ones.

  • Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) are comprised of wireless mobile nodes characterized by a randomly changing topology, high mobility, availability of geographic position, and fewer power constraints. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a promising candidate for the physical layer of VANET because of the inherent characteristics of the spectral efficiency and robustness to channel impairments. The susceptibility of OFDM to Inter-Carrier Interference (ICI) is a challenging issue. The high mobility of nodes in VANET causes higher Doppler shifts, which results in ICI in the OFDM system. In this paper, a frequency domain com-btype channel estimation was used to cancel out ICI. The channel frequency response at the pilot tones was estimated using a Least Square (LS) estimator. An efficient interpolation technique is required to estimate the channel at the data tones with low interpolation error. This paper proposes a robust interpolation technique to estimate the channel frequency response at the data subcarriers. The channel induced noise tended to degrade the Bit Error Rate (BER) performance of the system. Parallel concatenated Convolutional codes were used for error correction. At the decoding end, different decoding algorithms were considered for the component decoders of the iterative Turbo decoder. A performance and complexity comparison among the various decoding algorithms was also carried out.

  • The voluntary EMG (vEMG) signal from electrically stimulated muscle is very useful for feedback control in functional electrical stimulation. However, the recorded EMG signal from surface electrodes has unwanted stimulation artifact and M-wave as well as vEMG. Here, we propose an event-synchronous adaptive digital filter for the suppression of stimulation artifact and M-wave in this application. The proposed method requires a simple experimental setup that does not require extra hardware connections to obtain the reference signals of adaptive digital filter. For evaluating the efficiency of this proposed method, the filter was tested and compared with a least square (LS) algorithm using previously measured data. We conclude that the cancellation of both primary and residual stimulation artifacts is enhanced with an event-synchronous adaptive digital filter and shows promise for clinical application to rehabilitate paretic limbs. Moreover because this algorithm is far simpler than the LS algorithm, it is portable and ready for real-time application.

  • In this paper, our proposed Nonlinear Autoregressive Exogenous (NARX) based on Least Square-Support Vector Regression (LS-SVR) is introduced and tested for producing natural sounds. This nonlinear synthesizer perfectly reproduce voiced sounds, and also conserve the naturalness such as jitter and shimmer, compared to LPC does not keep these naturalness. However, the results of some phonation are quite different from the original sounds. These results are assumed that single-band model can not afford to control and decompose the high frequency components. Therefore multi-band model with wavelet filterbank is adopted for substituting single band model. As a results, multi-band model results in improved stability. Finally, nonlinear speech modeling using NARX based on LS-SVR can successfully reconstruct synthesized sounds nearly similar to original voiced sounds.

  • As marine accidents happen frequently, it is required to establish a marine traffic monitoring system, which is designed to improve the safety and efficiency of navigation in VTS (Vessel Traffic Service). For this aim, recently, X-band marine radar is used for extracting the sea surface information and, it is necessary to retrieve wave information correctly and provide for the safe and efficient movement of vessel traffic within the VTS area. In this paper, three different current estimation algorithms including the classical least-squares (LS) fitting, a modified iterative least-square fitting routine and a normalized scalar product of variable current velocities are compared with buoy data and then, the iterative least-square method is modified to estimate wave information by improving the initial current velocity. Through several simulations with radar signals, it is shown that the proposed method is effective in retrieving the wave information compared to the conventional methods.

  • Vehicle communication can facilitate efficient coordination among vehicles on the road and enable future vehicular applications such as vehicle safety enhancement, infotainment, or even autonomous driving. In the $3^{rd}$ Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), many studies focus on long term evolution (LTE)-based vehicle communication. Because vehicle speed is high enough to cause severe channel distortion in vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) environments. We can utilize channel estimation methods to approach a reliable vehicle communication systems. Conventional channel estimation schemes can be categorized as least-squares (LS), decision-directed channel estimation (DDCE), spectral temporal averaging (STA), and smoothing methods. In this study, we propose a smart channel estimation scheme in LTE-based V2V environments. The channel estimation scheme, based on an LTE uplink system, uses a demodulation reference signal (DMRS) as the pilot symbol. Unlike conventional channel estimation schemes, we propose an adaptive smoothing channel estimation scheme (ASCE) using quadratic smoothing (QS) of the pilot symbols, which estimates a channel with greater accuracy and adaptively estimates channels in data symbols. In simulation results, the proposed ASCE scheme shows improved overall performance in terms of the normalized mean square error (NMSE) and bit error rate (BER) relative to conventional schemes.
