Influence of Project-Based Learning in LIS on Self-Directed Learning and Problem Solving Ability (문헌정보학의 프로젝트기반 학습이 자기주도적 학습과 문제해결능력에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigates the influence of project-based learning method on the self-directed learning and problem-solving abilities of students taking the 'Media Center Management' course in Library Information Science (LIS). During this study, two tests measuring students' self-directed learning and problem-solving abilities were conducted, containing 48 items divided into 8 categories and 30 items divided into 5 steps of problem-solving processes, respectively. By utilizing the correspondence sample T-test during this study, statistically significant results were found in all categories of self-directed learning, excluding the 'self-understanding' category. In addition, significant differences were found in the 5 steps problem-solving processes as well. Subsequently, an in-depth interview was conducted, inquiring into the students' perspectives on the difficulty of attending classes, the content of lectures, the appropriateness of assignments, the validity of the evaluation method, the relationship with their team members, and the benefits acquired from completing the assignments. Finally, suggestions for future research were presented.

  • Supervised learning based on deep learning has made a leap forward in various application fields. However, many supervised learning methods work under the common assumption that training and test data are extracted from the same distribution. If it deviates from this constraint, the deep learning network trained in the training domain is highly likely to deteriorate rapidly in the test domain due to the distribution difference between domains. Domain adaptation is a methodology of transfer learning that trains a deep learning network to make successful inferences in a label-poor test domain (i.e., target domain) based on learned knowledge of a labeled-rich training domain (i.e., source domain). In particular, the unsupervised domain adaptation technique deals with the domain adaptation problem by assuming that only image data without labels in the target domain can be accessed. In this paper, we explore the unsupervised domain adaptation techniques.

The Effects of Maternal Monitoring, Shared Activities, Education-Oriented Behavior, and Allowing Children to Own Smart-Phones on the Smart Media Usage Patterns of Elementary School Children (어머니의 감독, 활동공유, 교육지향행동, 스마트폰 허용여부가 초등학교 저학년 아동의 스마트 미디어 이용패턴에 미치는 영향)

  • Objective: This study aimed to examine the effects of maternal monitoring, shared activities with children, maternal education-oriented behavior, and allowing children to own smart-phones on smart media usage patterns based on smart-phone usage time and purposes among elementary school children. Methods: The participants were 1,315 second-grade elementary school children from the 9th wave of PSKC. Latent profile analysis and the three-step estimation approach were used to examine the determinants of the latent profile and the effects of maternal parenting on the profile. Results: Four latent profiles were identified: 'High-level usage & Entertaining oriented,' 'Moderate-level usage & Social/entertaining oriented,' 'Moderate-level usage & Learning oriented,' and 'Low-level usage.' Additionally, results showed that each profile can be predicted by maternal monitoring, education-oriented behavior, and permitting children to own smart-phones. Conclusion/Implications: Our outcomes suggested that it would be necessary to understand the smart media usage patterns of elementary school children, considering both the amount of time spent with smart media and purposes of uses. Further, it is helpful for mothers to monitor children's daily activities, support their educational activities, and take the role of gatekeeper for smart media as a way of appropriate guidance for their children's use of smart media.

A Study on the Development of Curriculum Content Structure for Information Literacy Education (정보활용교육을 위한 교과 내용 체계 개발 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to construct contents of elementary and secondary education which will be included in the information literacy education and to obtain basic information and implications necessary for developing new textbooks. For this study, three types of previously developed textbooks for information literacy education were analyzed, and curriculum content structure, and textbook structure of the draft version of the textbook 'Media and Information Life' developed in 2019-2020 were analyzed. The analysis results are as follows. the information literacy education textbook applied the information problem solving process model and contained the contents of print, and digital media and the media literacy necessary for democratic citizens, but it was necessary to add the types of libraries and media in sequence. Second, library, media, information, and reading literacy were major learning elements that made up the contents of the information literacy curriculum. Third, the "media and information life" textbook needed to present subject competencies, generalized knowledge, content system, and achievement standards in accordance with the system of the 2015 revised curriculum. In addition, social discussion was needed to derive the name of the information literacy curriculum.

Interactive Education of Introductory Engineering via Multimedia (멀티미디어를 이용한 인터액티브 공학개론 교육)

  • We introduce an introductory engineering education course for engineering majors and non-engineering majors. This course does not require any previous knowledge and experience on engineering. It requires strong curiosities and imaginations on current and future society we live in, where technology is inseparable ingredient. Course encourages attendees to explore fundamental issues of engineering: what is proper technology and what are proper ways of exercising engineering, issues dealt in soft engineering. Since course topics cover many aspects of technology, traditional learning methods fail to be successful and efficient. Various efficient learning methods have been proposed and implemented. We utilize various interactive tangible media, which include simulated thought experiments and physical media experiences. About twenty (20) episodes in short film format are produced based on scenario written according to related issues selected. Physical media like interactive robots are introduced for attendees' stimulated experiences. We summarize our exciting experiments on interactive teaching experiences at Pusan National University which include on/off-line interactions, assignments, projects, and evaluations.

Educational Usage of a Teaching Assistant Robot (교사 보조 로봇의 교육적 활용)

  • Robots evolve from tools to information media since they generates information by interacting with human. As studies on robot-aided education are still in a starting phase, attempts need to be made to use robots for educational purposes and to investigate the effects of the use. It was showed that robot-aided learning was friendlier than other media assisted learning, and especially effective for motivating children. We developed the prototype robot Jenny that can help teachers as a educational media in class(i.e. as a T.A. robot, it can present robot contents on its chest to screen and explain about it when teacher asks). is a schoolmate for 5th or 6th grade children or an elder schoolmate for the rest. We performed the field trial at an elementary school. We carried out 9 classes for three subjects(english, korean, music) with -students in $4th{\sim}5th$ grade. They thought Jenny who was 13 years old as an elder schoolmate in 6th grade. Also, a significant difference was found in the interest and concentration of experimental groups from controlled groups.

The Effects of Types of Social Media on Academic Achievement, Interaction, and Social Efficacy in Web-based Project Learning (웹기반 프로젝트학습을 위한 소셜 미디어 활용 유형이 학업성취도, 상호작용, 사회적 효능감에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of types of social media on academic achievement, interaction, and social efficacy in web-based project learning. To accomplish the purpose of the study, an experiment was conducted with 78 six graders who attend S elementary school in I metropolitan city. They were assigned to 'Facebook' group, 'Wiki' group, and web bulletin board group. The academic achievement score of Wiki group was higher than that of web bulletin board group. There was significant difference between task-oriented interaction and relation-oriented interaction in Wiki group. In addition, relation-oriented interaction was more active than task-oriented interaction in Facebook group. Finally, social efficacy score of Facebook group was higher than that of Wiki group.

Inside Wall Frame Detection Method Based on Single Image (단일이미지에 기반한 내벽구조 검출 방법)

  • In this paper, we are proposing improved vanishing points detection and segments labeling methods for inside wall frame detection from indoor image of a piece of having a colour RGB. A lot of research related to recognizing the frame of artificial structures from the image is being performed due to increase in demand for AR technology. But detect the inside wall frame in indoor images have many objects that caused the occlusion is still a difficult issue. Inner wall frame detection methods are usually segment labeling methods and detect vanishing point methods are used together. In order to improve the vanishing point detection method we proposed using inner wall orthogonality which forms the cube. Also we proposed labeling method using tree based learning and superpixel based segmentation method for labelingthe segments in indoor images. Finally, in experiments have shown improved results about inside wall frame detection according to our methods.

Initial Small Data Reveal Rumor Traits via Recurrent Neural Networks (초기 소량 데이터와 RNN을 활용한 루머 전파 추적 기법)

  • The emergence of online media and their data has enabled data-driven methods to solve challenging and complex tasks such as rumor classification problems. Recently, deep learning based models have been shown as one of the fastest and the most accurate algorithms to solve such problems. These new models, however, either rely on complete data or several days-worth of data, limiting their applicability in real time. In this study, we go beyond this limit and test the possibility of super early rumor detection via recurrent neural networks (RNNs). Our model takes in social media streams as time series input, along with basic meta-information about the rumongers including the follower count and the psycholinguistic traits of rumor content itself. Based on analyzing millions of social media posts on 498 real rumors and 494 non-rumor events, our RNN-based model detected rumors with only 30 initial posts (i.e., within a few hours of rumor circulation) with remarkable F1 score of 0.74. This finding widens the scope of new possibilities for building a fast and efficient rumor detection system.

  • Similar to the other cultural contents, the character industry is based on the media which acts as the technological background. In fact, the character industry is the process of that a created character accesses to the consumers via media, builds its value and becomes licensed as a brand in the market. Therefore, it is crucial to select the most effective media for the consistence of a character in the market, as well as for construction of a higher brand quality of the character. Today, "Webtoon" might be considered as one of the marketing means which utilizes the Internet media for raising the character as a brand. Webtoon has apparent strength because it can be produced in shorter period and with less expense than through other media. Furthermore, Webtoon can be simply featured by the easiness of two-way communication and transference to another media through it. For these reasons, and according to the result of analyzing some Korean Webtoons, it seems obvious that the most effective media in character marketing is the Internet. In addition to the Internet, the strategic development in the media-mix is also important for establishing a brand of a character. However, the effective media-mix is available only when the character's external identity meets with the trait of its media. For the purpose of learning how the media-mix works when a character reaches for the consumers, a character "Hamataeng" was born and used in the experiment. This study will explain the marketing process through the use of own-created Webtoon and other contents, and suggest the ways to build a brand of a character. In addition, it is also indicated that a media-mixing strategy for transformation and expansion of the character to other media.
