  • Learners and users of a second language have to resort to a variety of conversational strategies or structures to enable them to communicate effectively and competently. Factors affecting effective communication among English as a second or English as foreign language (ESL/EFL) learners are diverse in nature because of different socio-cultural backgrounds. Gambits as a conversational strategy are used to a large extent and teachers must be made aware of such conversational strategies used by English as second or foreign language learners. Thus, studies focusing on conversational strategies among ESL/EFL learners in the English language classroom are important in order to identify the types of conversational strategies used and to help teachers to understand the appropriate conversational strategies and structures. Such understanding can be used to guide learners to use correct conversational strategies when communicating in English. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the use of gambits as a communication strategy in conversation among non-native speakers of English in an English as a second language(ESL) context based on Kellers conversational strategy signals. • This paper investigated AV benefit of Korean and Japanese EFL learners' perception of the liquid contrast in English. In a perception experiment, the two English consonants /l/ and /r/ were embedded in initial and medial position in nonsense words in the context of the vowels /i, a, u/. Singletons and clusters were included in the speech material. Audio and video recordings were made using a total of 108 items. The items were presented to Korean and Japanese learners of English in three conditions: audio-alone (A), visual-alone (V) and audio-visual presentation (AV). The results showed that there was no evidence of AV benefit for the perception of the /l/-/r/ contrast for either Korean or Japanese learners of English. The results suggest that increasing auditory proficiency in identifying a non-native contrast is linked with an increasing proficiency in using visual cues to the contrast.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the necessity of research for increasing French language learners and to examine their use of listening strategies according to their proficiency as a basic study for their continuous learning and communication skills. In the case of French language Korean learners, both the beginner and intermediate learners used the upper cognitive strategy most frequently. However, the cognitive strategy, which has been mentioned as a frequently used strategy in previous studies, was found to be the least used in this study. This finding can be attributed to differences in mores and mastery of prior studies and research subjects. The cognitive strategy was lower in both the beginner and intermediate levels, but the level of use increased significantly in the intermediate level compared to the beginner level, showing only statistically significant differences in the usage patterns according to the proficiency level among the four listening strategies.

  • This study is for looking into distinguishing features in child KSL learners' early literacy development. For these, the writings, recording data of dialogue, and observational journals of KSL child learners was collected regularly and the data were analysed. As results, KSL child learners showed lots of writing errors due to difficulty in phonological awareness or letter awareness of Korean language. And they seemed to develop the competence of connecting letters and meanings prior to developing the competence of connecting letters and sounds. Three KSL child learners showed great individual differences in development rate, and it is supposed to be mainly caused from differences of literacy development in their mother tongue, or quantity and quality in exposure for Korean language.

  • In the programming education, there is a great need of a teaching support system that can support the learner in the programming process regardless of the computer language due to instructor's difficulty of checking the progress of learners in real-time. Its importance is especially important in lower grade coding classes such as in K-12 education because they are not used to coding and so simple problems can be regarded as complex problems. For this, a pilot coding education support system based on Levenshtein distance algorithm which shows learners' progress to given solution in real-time was developed in order to help learners to solve complex problems easily, and the learners' motivation and self-efficacy was measured for estimating the usefulness of developed system targeting elementary school students. When the learners use the developed system, it was found that a statistically significant difference appears in the sub-factors of learning motivation compared with traditional class teaching environments. Among the sub-factors of self-efficacy, the efficacy dimension showed statistically significant difference too.

  • Recently, corpus assisted vocabulary instruction has been attracting a lot of interest. Most studies have focused on understanding language learners' receptive vocabulary knowledge. Limited attention has been paid to learners' productive competence. To fill this gap, this study attended to learners' productive lexical development in terms of form, meaning and use respectively. This study introduced EFL learners to the corpus-based language pedagogy to learn COVID-19 theme-based vocabulary. To investigate the gains and views of 33 EFL first-year college students, a sentence completion task and a questionnaire were developed. Learners' productive performances in the three lexical knowledge aspects (i.e., form, meaning and use) were particularly targeted. The results revealed that the students achieved significant gains in all aspects regardless of their proficiency level. In particular, the less proficient students achieved greater knowledge retention compared with their highly proficient counterparts. Meanwhile, students showed positive attitudes towards the corpus-based approach to vocabulary learning.

  • Foreign learners are not focusing on "적" grammar. Therefore, the lack of materials on "적" is the reason that foreign learners use "적" in real life. In particular, when teaching the Chinese-dependent noun "적", there are some problems in making the Chinese equivalent of "적". more accurately understood by Koreans. In addition, when using grammar through analyzing the grammatical conjunction centered on "적" and the corresponding expression of Chinese, the main reason for the error is that there is no common concept and form in the mother tongue, so there is no consciousness. Therefore, it is difficult for learners to learn similar expressions that are not in Chinese or Korean. Therefore, this study aims to improve specific educational programs for Korean learners and Korean Chinese learners in terms of the time system and the corresponding performance of Chinese grammar and Chinese characters based on the previous version of "적".

  • The purpose of this study is to reveal the Korean learners' usage pattern of '의', the genitive particle, according to semantic classification, so that it can be referred to in determining the contents and methods of related education. The method of this study adopts a quantitative analysis using learners corpus established by National Institute of Korean Language. As a result of the analysis, as proficiency increases, the overall frequency of '의' increases and the number of meaning senses used increases. However, the frequency of errors also increases with it. As for the usage pattern of each sense, the meaning of 'ownership, belonging' is the most frequent, and followed by 'acting entity', 'kinship, social relations', and 'relationship(area)'. In conclusion, the meanings of 'acting subjects' and 'relationships(area) need to be supplemented with explicit education. Other meanings need to be discussed, and decisions should be made in consideration of learning purpose and proficiency.

  • The focus of this research is on identifying the problems that learners experience during online problem-based learning (e-PBL) from a cognitive perspective. The study is concentrated on learners' cognitive load level at each stage of e-PBL. The research questions are specifically as follows: What is the level of cognitive load at each stage of e-PBL and what is the relationship between cognitive load and group performance? What cognitive difficulties are experienced by learners in e-PBL and what causes cognitive difficulties? In this study, we found that cognitive load was the highest in stage 1 and there was negative relationship between cognitive load at stage 1 and group performance. In addition, learners experienced difficulties during e-PBL such as the complexity of task, the difficulty in collaboration, and the lack of appropriate references. For further study, we will investigate some strategies regarding adjusting learners' cognitive load in the early stages of e-PBL.

  • Supporting individual or group learners through designing effective learning environment has been major concern for instructional technologists. In CSCL environment, the effectiveness of learning depends not only on the design of the learning incidences but also on that of psychological environment because in CSCL the learners encounter virtually a new environment deviate from the ordinary physical world. CSCL is one of the most demanding environment for learners and thus it requires a highly refined learner support mechanisms. The purpose of the research was to devise conceptual tools for supporting learners in CSCL environment. Especially, the researchers tried to develop special kinds of scaffolding that directly support the collaborative practice in the social and psychological dimension of the learner. Body of literature on scaffolding has been reviewed and effective CSCL environments were observed and analyzed. As a result of the study, the research proposes a new type of scaffolding, named as "collaboration scaffolding" as a conceptual tool for supporting learners in CSCL environment. Also the research suggests three subtypes of scaffolds as the most typical collaboration scaffolding; emotional scaffolds, facilitative scaffolds, and exploratory scaffolds.
