  • The objective of this study is a qualitative comparison between line-integrated OH chemiluminescence ($OH{\ast}$) image and its Abel inversion image at different phase of the oscillating pressure field. PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) measurements were conducted under non-reacting conditions to see the global flow structure. Also NOx emission was measured to investigate the effect of fuel-air premixing on combustion instability and emission characteristics. Experiments were carried out in an atmospheric pressure, laboratory-scale dump combustor operating on natural gas. Combustion instabilities in present study exhibited a longitudinal mode with a dominant frequency of ${\sim}341.8$ Hz, which corresponded to a quarter wave mode of combustor. Heat release and pressure waves were in-phase when instability occurred. Results gave an insight about the location where the strong coherence of pressure and heat release existed. Also an additional information on active control to suppress the combustion instabilities was obtained. For lean premixed combustion, strong correlation between $OH{\ast}$ and NOx emissions was expected largely due to the exponential dependence of thermal NOx mechanism on flame temperature.

  • In gas turbines, excess air for combustion is available and therefore lean premixed combustion is the most promising approach to the significant reduction of thermal NOx emissions. At lean conditions, however, flame stability is inherently worse and hence combustion tends to be incomplete. Efforts have been devoted toward extending the operating range of complete combustion at leaner conditions. One of them is the lean-lean two-stage combustion where lean to ultra-lean secondary mixtures are mixed with the hot burned gas from the primary stage. Conventional flame combustion or flameless reaction are initiated depending on the conditions of the secondary zone. In the first part of the present study, the effects of fuel injection on the emissions and flame stability were investigated for a single tubular flame, In the second part, the emissions and flame stability were studied for a two-stage combustor with secondary mixture injected through the tangential slots on a cylindrical combustor wall. The effects of the ratio of air flow rates to the primary and secondary zones on the emissions and combustion characteristics were investigate.

  • This paper describes the forced flame response in a turbulent premixed gas turbine combustor. The fuel was premixed with the air upstream of a choked inlet to avoid equivalence ratio fluctuations. To impose the inlet flow velocity, a siren type modulation device was developed using an AC motor, rotating and static plates. Measurements were made of the velocity fluctuation in the nozzle using hot wire anemometry and of the heat release fluctuation in the combustor using chemiluminescence emission. The test results showed that flame length as well as geometry was strongly dependent upon modulation frequency in addition to operating conditions such as inlet velocity. Convection delay time between the velocity perturbation and heat release fluctuations was calculated using phase information of the transfer function, which agreed well with the results of flame length measurements. Also, basic characteristics of the flame nonlinear response shown in the current test conditions were introduced.

  • An experimental study of the effect of operating conditions on the behavior of a lean premixed laboratory combustor operating on natural gas has been conducted. Measurements were made characterizing the pressure fluctuations in the combustor and the flame structure over a range of inlet temperatures, inlet velocities and equivalence ratios. In addition the fuel distribution at the inlet to the combustor was varied such that it was an independent parameter in the experiment. Inlet temperature, inlet velocity and equivalence ratio were all found to have an effect on the stability characteristics of the combustor. The nature of this effect, however, depended on the fuel distribution. For example, with one fuel distribution the combustor would become unstable when the temperature was increased, whereas with a different fuel distribution the combustor would become unstable when the temperature was decreased. Similarly, the operating conditions had an effect on the flame structure. For example the intensity-weighted center of mass of the flame was found to move closer to the center body as either the temperature or equivalence ratio increased. It was interesting and somewhat surprising to note, however, that as the location of the center of mass changed with operating conditions it did so by moving along a line of constant flame angle.

  • The combustion instability was experimentally investigated in model gas turbine combustor with dual swirl burner. When such instability occurs, a strong coupling between pressure oscillation and unsteady heat release excites a self-sustained acoustic wave which results in a loud sound, and can even cause fatal damage to the combustor and entire system. In present study, to understand the combustion instability with a premixed mixture, the detailed periods of pressure and heat release data in unstable flame mode were investigated by various measurement methods at relatively rich condition and lean condition near flammable limits. Also, to prepare the utilization of synthetic natural gas (SNG) fuel in gas turbine system, an investigation was conducted using a simulated SNG including methane as a reference fuel to examine the effects of $H_2$ content on flame stability. These results provide that the instability due to flash-back behaviour like CIVB phenomenon occurred at rich condition, while the repetition of relighting and extinction caused the oscillation of lean condition near flammable limit. From the analysis of $H_2$ content effects, it is also confirmed that the instability frequency is proportional to the laminar burning velocity at both rich and lean condition.

  • In order to realistically represent the complex turbulence-chemistry interaction at the partially premixed turbulent lifted flames encountered in the gas turbine combustors, the combined conserved-scalar/level-set flamelet approach has been adopted. The parallel unstructured-grid finite-volume method has been developed to maintain the geometric flexibility and computational efficiency for the solution of the physically and geometrically complex flows. Special emphasis is given to the swirl effects on the combustion characteristics of the lean-premixed gas turbine combustor. Numerical results suggest that the present approach is capable of realistically simulating the combustion characteristics for the lean-premixed gas turbine engines and the lifted turbulent jet flame with a vitiated coflow.

  • The blowoff phenomenon was experimentally investigated in a ducted combustor according to the acoustic excitation. The blowoff equivalence ratio rapidly increases at specific acoustic excitation frequencies. A resonance phenomenon occurs when the excitation frequency approaches the harmonic frequency of the combustor. The resonance increases the velocity fluctuation in the combustor and the infiltration velocity of the unburned gas in the shear layer. Consequently, the mixture velocity exceeds the burning velocity and the blowoff occurs at the higher equivalence ratio.

  • Dynamic characteristics of combustion occurring in various combustion devices have been extensively studied since most of high-performance combustion devices are susceptible to hazardous, unstable combustion that deteriorates combustor's lifetime. One of the most severe unstable combustion phenomena is high-frequency combustion instability in which heat release fluctuations from combustion are coupled to resonant modes of the combustor. Here in this study, characteristics of high-frequency combustion instabilities observed in three different combustion devices have been presented. Lean-premixed combustion instability occurs mainly due to equivalence ratio fluctuations which induce large heat release oscillations at lean conditions. Liquid-fueled combustion also shows high-frequency instability from energy coupling between pressure and heat release oscillations.

  • The measurement of heat release rate is of great importance in the study of thermo-acoustic instability occurring in lean premixed combustion and the chemiluminescence emission has been used as an indicator of heat release in combustion instability studies primarily for its relative simplicity. This paper presents results of experimental study of flame chemiluminescence from an atmospheric, swirl-stabilized, turbulent lean premixed flame with a main emphasis on the effect of $CO_2^*$ background level in the $CH^*$ and $OH^*$ band. The test results show that the effect of $CO_2^*$ level in the $CH^*$ band is greater than that in the $OH^*$ band. Also, the background to peak ratio for both $CH^*$ and $OH^*$ bands can be expressed as a function of equivalence ratio, almost regardless of a change in the inlet velocity.

  • The laboratory experiments have been conducted to investigate the effects of air preheated temperature on the emission characteristics by a model gas turbine burner with a hybrid/dual swirl jet flames configuration. The concentration of NOx and CO emissions, and flue gas temperature at combustor exit were measured with varying the equivalence ratio for different air preheated temperatures of 300, 400, 500K at atmospheric pressure. It was overall shown that the NOx and CO emissions, and flue gas temperature were decreased according to the decreasing of equivalence ratio due to the effects of lean premixed combustion regardless of the air preheated temperature. Experimental results of a lean premixed flames configuration indicated that the NOx emission was increased with higher inlet air temperature and air flow rate, which is attributed to the increasing of flue gas temperature and heat release related to the thermal NOx mechanism. But the CO emission was shown the opposite tendency, that is, the CO emission was decreased with increasing of inlet air temperature and flow rate.
