  • The reformer system is a chemical device that drives the conversion of hydrocarbon to hydrogen rich gas under high temperature environment($600-1,000^{\circ}C$). Generally, NG(Natural Gas) or AOG(Anode Off Gas) is used as fuel of fuel cell reformer combustion system. The experimental study to analyze the combustion characteristics of a premixed ceramic burner used for 0.5-1.0 kW fuel cell reformer was performed. Ceramic burner experiments using NG and AOG were carried out to investigate the flame stability characteristics by heating capacity, equivalence ratio and different fuels respectively. The results show that surface flames can be classified into green, red, blue and lift-off flames as the equivalence ratio of methane-air mixture decreases. And the stable flames can be established using NG and AOG as reformer fuel in the perforated ceramic burner. In particular, the blue flame is found to be stable at a lean equivalence ratio under different mixture conditions of NG and AOG for the 0.5 to 1.0 kW fuel cell system power range. NOx emission is under 60 ppm between 0.70 to 0.78 of equivalence ratio and CO emission is under 50 ppm between 0.70 to 0.84 of equivalence ratio.

  • Homogeneous charge compression ignition(HCCI) combustion is an advanced technique for reducing the hazardous nitrogen oxide(NOx) and particulate matter(PM) in a diesel engine. NOx could be reduced by achieving lean homogeneous mixture resulting in combustion temperature. PM could be also reduced by eliminating fuel-rich zones which exist in conventional diesel combustion. However previous researches have reported that power-output of HCCI engine is limited by the high intensive knock and misfiring. In an attempt to extend the upper load limit for HCCI operation, supercharging in combination with Exhaust Gas Recirculation(EGR) has been applied: supercharging to increase the power density and EGR to control the combustion phase. The test was performed in a single cylinder engine operated at 1200 rpm. Boost pressures of 1.1 and 1.2 bar were applied. High EGR rates up to 45% were supplied. Most of fuel was injected at early timing to make homogeneous mixture. Small amount of fuel injection was followed near TDC to assist ignition. Results showed increasing boost pressure resulted in much higher power-output. Optimal EGR rate influenced by longer ignition delay and charge dilution simultaneously was observed.

  • This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation on one dimensional excess enthalpy flame formed in a porous block. The investigation is undertaken in order to further the physical understanding of internal heat recirculation from reaction zone to unburned mixture. Two porous blocks are placed at both sides of combustion block to control the temperature distribution in the combustion block by means of radiation heat transfer. Mean temperature measurement reveals the general nature of the reaction zone in the porous material. It is conformed that the temperature of reaction zone exceeds the adiabatic flame temperature and the flame is stabilized at the out range of flammibility limit derived by conventional burner.

  • Chitosan, hydroxycitrate and L-carnitine have been known to be antiobesity components. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the combined effects of chitosan, hydroxycitrate and L-carnitine mixture as a potential antiobesity supplement in overweight women. Pre-menopausal healthy females who were overweight (percent ideal body weight > 110) were included in this study. Forty-nine subjects randomly received a placebo (n = 25) or antiobesity-supplement (n = 24), which was a mixture of chitosan, hydroxycitrate, and L-carnitine. Before and after the eight-week experimental period, anthropometric parameters, blood components and computerized tomography were measured. At baseline, the two groups were well matched in terms of age, body mass index and lipid profile. After the eight weeks of potential antiobesity supplementation, the subjects' body fat percent had decreased significantly (p < 0.001) by 5.6% (39.1 $\pm$ 1 vs 36.9 $\pm$ 1%) while lean body mass increased (p < 0.01). Vsceral fat area at the L4 vertebra decreased significantly (p < 0.01) by 8.6% in the supplemented group and the total fat area at the L4 vertebra showed a tendency to decrease (p = 0.051) by 2.4%. Also, in the group given the antiobesity-supplement rather than the placebo, the fasting triglyceride level decreased significantly (p < 0.05) by 10.0%. In addition, serum total cholesterol levels in the antiobesity-supplement group showed a tendency to decrease (p=0.159) by 2.7% (194 $\pm$ 6 vs 189 $\pm$ 6 mg/dl). No side effects were found in either group during the intervention. In conclusion, the present study demonstrated that taking a mixture of chitosan, hydroxycitrate, and L-carnitine as a potential antiobesity supplement for eight weeks produced advantageous changes in the weight and visceral fat accumulation of overweight women without any side effects. • As a demand for an automobile increases, air pollution and a problem of the energy resources come to the fore in the world. Consequently, governments of every country established ordinances for green-house gas reduction and improvement of air pollution problem. Especially, as international oil price increases, engine using clean energy are being developed competitively with alternative transportation energy sources development policy as the center. Bio ethanol, one of the renewable energy produced from biomass, gained spotlight for transportation energy sources. Studies are in progress to improve fuel supply methods and combustion methods which are key features, one of the engine technologies. DI(Direct Injection), which can reduce fuel consumption rate by injecting fuel directly into the cylinder, is being studied for Green-house gas reduction and fuel economy enhancement at SI(Spark Ignition). GDI(Galoine Direct Injection) has an advantage to meet the regulations for fuel efficiency and $CO_2$ emissions. However it produces increased number of ultrafine particles, that yet received attention in the existing port-injection system, and NOX. As fuel is injected into the cylinder with high-pressure, a proper injection strategy is required by characteristics of a fuel. Especially, when alcohol type fuel is considered. In this study, we tried to get a base data bio-ethanol mixture in GDI, and combustion for optimization. We set fuel mixture rate and fuel injection pressure as parameters and took a picture with a high speed camera after gasoline-ethanol mixture fuel was injected into a constant volume combustion chamber. We figured out spraying characteristic according to parameters. Also, we determine combustion characteristics by measuring emissions and analyzing combustion.

  • The effects of tumble and swirl flows on the flame propagation were investigated experimentally in a 4-valve optical gasoline engine. The tumble flow patterns, generated by various intake ports of different entry angle; $25^{\circ}$ , $20^{\circ}$ and $15^{\circ}$ , were characterized under motored conditions with laser Doppler velocirnetry. Inclined tumble(swirl) flows were induced by three different swirl control valves. The initial flame propagation was visualized by an ICCD camera and its image were analyzed to compare the enflamed area and displacement of initial flames. It was found that there is a correlation between the stronger tumble during induction and turbulence levels at the time of ignition resulting in faster flame development. Inclined tumble was proved to be more beneficial than the pure tumble for faster and stable combustion under lean mixture conditions, which was confirmed by faster propagating flame images.

  • To construct the design back data for a lean-burn gas engine, we have designed a constant volume combustion chamber with sub-chamber. With constant volume ratio of main-sub combustion chamber and constant equivalence ratio of methane-air mixture, the influence of geometric configurations(diameter, injection angle, number, length) of passagehole upon combustion characteristics were studied. It was found that combustion characteristics in the main combustion chamber were greatly influenced by the injection angle and length of passagehole.

  • A study was performed to understand self-excited pressure fluctuations in the lean premixed flames and to evaluate the effect of Helmholtz resonator on the pressure fluctuations. As low-frequency pressure fluctuations have been reported to cause fatal damage to the combustor and the entire system, Helmholtz-type resonators, which reduce the damage by low-frequency pressure fluctuation in the combustor, are attached to the channel of unburned mixture flow. It is found that the range of low-frequency pressure fluctuations of flame mode 2 is narrowed by the attachment of Helmholtz resonators. From this result, if Helmholtz-type resonators are applied to actual gas turbine combustor, it is confirmed that Helmholtz resonators attached on the fuel discharge hole are also effective for narrowing the range of flame mode 2
