Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing - A Merger for Worldclass Performance, but is it Really Talking Place?

  • More than a decade after their development and first wave of deployment, Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing have recently returned on the corporate agendas of a larger number of corporations across industries and supply chains. In the wake of their re-surge, this commentary addresses the evolution, context, content and deployment patterns of the two distinct management concepts. It also analyses claims in the business press that a merger is taking place between Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing. Here, it is found that there is not enough evidence to broadly support such claims, and it is only concluded that there is some evidence of an early tend towards a merger and that a possible merger would have many synergies and advantages. Finally, an example from a Scandinavian manufacturing company is provided that explains how Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing can be used in a beneficial way for companies to reach world-class performance.

전자부품 생산 Line에 있어서 Lean 생산방식 적용에 대한 실증적 고찰 (A Case-Study of Implementing Lean Production System in Manufacturing Electronic Components)

  • Lean production system can be defined as customer(product)-oriented production system with small lot size and flow-shop layout based on the JIT(Just-in-time) principles. In this paper, we introduce a case example of implementation of the Lean product ion system for manufacturing line of electronic component which has both machine processes and manual jobs. We also investigate the issues of implementing the Lean production system with the viewpoints of layout design scheme and JIT management rules. In the layout design, we propose the cell-line which has flow-shop layout with small lot size. In the management rules, the superior cell rule is applied in order to boost the needs of kaisen up. As the results of implementing the Lean production system, production lead time is decreased from 5 days to 1.5 days and also productivity and quality level arc surprisingly increased.

  • While the two principles of lean manufacturing and time-driven activity-based costing (TDABC) have been established out of multiple incentives and do not follow the same particular targets, there is substantial commonality between them. In these conditions, the supply management of a multi-product system needs a rigorous production model to minimize costs. In this sense, this paper proposes an interactive model with the consideration of optimizing product-mix decisions using both lean development tools and TDABC. This paper proposes a qualitative approach using the case study of the Iraqi state company for battery production. The suggested model decreased manufacturing time and costs, along with some substantial reduction in idle production capacity by 26 percent in 2019, based on the findings of the case study. On the other hand, the proposed model gives two side advantages: an efficient division of costs on goods due to the use of time spent as a cost factor for products and cost savings due to the introduction of the lean manufacturing approach that reduces all additional costs and increases product-mix decisions. Furthermore, the analytical data gathered here suggests that the incorporation of lean management concepts and TDABC has a strong and important influence on product-mix decisions.

  • Successfully adapting to digital and customer-oriented transformation, the concept of lean manufacturing professes the philosophy of creating greater benefit while minimizing losses. These losses are operations that do not add value in the production process to ensure the efficiency, flexibility, and profitability of projects. In the context of broad automation and digitalization of all sectors of the economy, mechanisms for combining automation technologies and lean production are becoming available. Moreover, when it comes to the efficient use of financial, human, or material resources, it is clear that the use of Industry 4.0 technologies can be an effective tool for achieving the goals of lean production, as many of them pursue the same goal. In this context, this article aims to study the effectiveness of the implementation of project management concepts at the global level and identify the main factors influencing its effectiveness to ensure the achievement of lean production through LEAN technologies and Industry 4.0 technologies. To achieve this goal, several statistical indicators were selected and several statistical methods of analysis were used: pairwise correlation, regression analysis, methods of comparison, synthesis, and generalization. Statistical analysis was conducted according to a survey conducted by the Project Management Institute (PMI) in 2020. An economic-mathematical model of dependence of project effectiveness in different regions of the world on the level of implementation of project management approaches is built, which shows that the increase in project effectiveness by 85% is due to financial losses, technical training, and consumer orientation. These results allow project managers to develop appropriate strategies to improve project management approaches at all levels. It is established that LEAN technologies and technologies of Industry 4.0 have several tools that have a positive effect on minimizing losses following the concept of lean production. Besides, given that the technology of Industry 4.0 is focused on the automation of Lean Production technology, a mechanism for the introduction of lean production using these technologies and methods.

린 기법의 BIM 기반 설계조율 프로세스 접목 - 설비전기 설계조율 프로세스 재설계 사례연구 - (Application of Lean Theory to BIM-Based Coordination - A Case Study on Process Re-Engineering of MEP Coordination -)

  • 이 논문은 프로세스 재설계 관점에서의 린 (lean) 개념의 이론적 변형과 BIM 프로세스 개선 사례를 제시한다. 최근에는 BIM을보다 효율적으로 사용하기위해 린 개념을 접목하는 연구들이 증가하고 있다. 린 이론과 성격과 기능은 제조업을 기반으로 하며 제조업에서의 프로세스는 린 개념의 프로세스 재설계 과정에 의해서 변형된 하나 프로세스로 개선된다. 하지만 제조 공정과 건설 공정은 다른 특성을 가지고 있다. 두 산업의 서로 다른 차이점으로 인해 전통적인 린의 프로세스 재설계 기능의 5 단계에는 이론적으로 BIM 프로세스에 그대로 적용하기에는 어려운 단계들이 포함되어 있다. 본 연구는 부분적으로 적용되는 린 개념의 접목을 해결하기 위해 제조 공정 및 BIM 프로세스의 특징을 분석했다. 이를 통해 이론적으로 린의 프로세스 재설계 단계를 수정하고 확장했다. 변형된 프로세스 재설계 단계는 설비전기 설계조율 프로세스에 적용했다. 본 연구에서 제안한 8단계의 프로세스 재설계 단계를 통해 일체화된 BIM 프로세스로 변형할 수 있었다. 또한 사례연구 결과는 공정 단계의 감소 및 비용절감의 가능성을 나타냈다. 본 연구의 결과는 BIM 프로세스 뿐만 아니라 다양한 프로세스에 접목될 수 있는 린 개념의 이론적 기초가 될 수 있다.

EXPLORATORY STUDY OF LEAN CONSTRUCTION: ASSESSMENT OF LEAN IMPLEMENTATION

  • Since Lean Construction has been introduced as a new management approach to improve productivity in the construction industry, much research is in progress to develop lean concepts and principles for better implementation and to get results of the successful adaptation of lean ideas from manufacturing for application in the construction industry. Currently, several construction companies in the USA are starting to implement lean construction with nebulous hopes of obtaining better results from their current projects than from past projects not employing lean construction. There are many difficulties in adopting lean concepts and systems into construction projects and implementing lean construction in real construction sites. Thus, there are demands to share information how other companies implement lean construction, to identify the benefits and barriers of lean implementation in the construction fields, and finally to improve their lean implementation. This study was the first exploratory study to assess lean construction implementation on overall projects. The case studies carried out the examination of the mutual relationships of lean planning systems, organization structure, attitudes of project participants and company strategy which played major influences on successful lean implementation

  • Most of all manufacturing industries are pursuing the manufacturing process innovation through the production process automation but the printing industry still does not get out of the analog ways of the entire process compared the entire manufacturing industry. Today, many printing enterprises have the difficulties by the short for delivery, multi-item small amount printing, high quality, rise in raw material cost, drop in receiving order cost, and etc. The printing industry can get over these difficulties and issues by implementing the compact workflow line, merge with the others, automatization and networking, minimization of the repetitive operation, efficiency of the working process, optimization of the operators' value creation, minimization of cost and materials and fast make-ready. The object of this thesis establishes the experimental data and study cases applicable in the printing industry by having high labor productivity and work in line with printing industry processes through "lean printing system".

  • Lean 6 sigma has recently been used to describe a management system which combines lean management and 6 sigma. The marriage between Lean manufacturing and 6 sigma has proven to be a powerful tool for cutting waste and improving the organization operations. Time and quality are the most important metrics in improving any company's production and profit performance. lean 6 sigma is a management innovation for improving production efficiency, process quality, cost reduction, investment efficiency and customer's satisfaction. in this paper, Advanced cell line is builded the home appliance goods of the LCD TV final assembly line of domestic company line, training the multi-skilled man and controlling the production information system based on Lean 6 sigma.

  • The supply chain not only includes the manufacturer and suppliers, but also transporters, warehouses, retailers, and customers themselves. Within each organization, such as manufacturer, the supply chain includes all functions involved in filling a customer request. these functions include, but are not limited to, new product development, marketing, operation, distribution, finance, and customer service. Lean Supply chain coordination improves if all supplier of chain take actions that together increase total supply chain profits. To design of Modularity by the grouping supplier, the proposed method is to develop the most appropriate production system models in the Supply Chain Management which is necessity of the times and its importance. The objects of this study is development of model and cost analysis to the modular production system in Lean SCM. Introduction of modular production system in Lean SCM is effective in reducing the cost in processing, manufacturing, inventory holding, ordering, etc.

효과적인 린 건설 수행을 위한 린 시스템 운용 방안 제시 (Deployment of Lean System for Effective Lean Construction Implementation)

  • 린 건설은 건설 관리의 새로운 방향을 제시해준다. 제조업체로부터 시작된 린 건설은 제조업의 생산활동과는 판이하게 다를 수 있는 건설업의 생산 업무를 효율적으로 조정해 주는데 역점을 두고 있다. 미국 LCI협회는 작업 흐름의 관리와 보다 효율적인 공정 및 계획 관리를 위해 최종 계획 관리 시스템을 개발하여 건설업체에 보급, 린 건설의 활성화를 유도하고 있는데, 이것이 바로 라스트 플래너 시스템(Last Planner System: LPS)이다. 국내에서도 린 건설에 대한 관심이 증가되고 있는 가운데 여러 번에 걸쳐 이 LPS의 소개가 이루어 졌으나 공사현장 참여자들의 비교적 상세한 지침서는 아직 제시된 바 없는 것으로 사료된다. 이에 본 연구에서는 국내 건설현장에서 린 시스템의 보다 효율적인 적용과 수행을 가능케 하기 위한 토대 마련을 제공하고자 하였다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 문헌조사, 현장 방문을 통한 인터뷰 및 설문조사, 그리고 현장의 린 건설 수행 실태 분석 등을 통하여 린 건설 수행 시 공사 참여자들의 역할과 의무를 정리하였고 린 시스템 중 가장 일반적으로 현장에 적용되어지고 있는 라스트플래너(Last Planner)의 운용 가이드를 제시하였다. 이와 더불어 린 시스템 적용 관리 모델을 제시하여 공사참여자들의 린 건설의 원활한 수행을 유도하는데 도움이 되고자 한다.
