This study has numerically modeled the combustion processes of the turbulent swirling premixed lifted syngas flames in the low-swirl burner (LSB). In these turbulent swirling premixed flames, the four tangentially-injected air jets induce the turbulent swirling flow which plays the crucial role of stabilizing the turbulent lifted flames. In the present approach, the turbulence-chemistry interaction is represented by the level-set based flamelet model. Numerical results indicate clearly that the present level-set based flamelet approach has realistically simulated the structure and stabilization mechanism of the turbulent swirling premixed lifted flames in the low-swirl burner. Computations are made for the wide range of the syngas chemical composition and the dilution level at two pressure conditions (1.0, 5.0 bar). Numerical results indicate that the lifted height in the LSB is increased by decreasing the H2 percentage and increasing the dilution level at the given equivalence ratio. It is also found that the flashback is occurred for the hydrogen composition higher than 80% at the equivalence ratio, 0.8. However, at the syngas composition range in the IGCC system, the stable lean-premixed lifted flames are formed at the low-swirl burner.

By changing the excess air ratio which affects strongly to the combustion characteristics, the flame stability range in the metal fiber burner were found and the range of the blue flame male and radiant mode were distinguished by direct photography. The results in our experiments for the flame stability zone were from a=1.4($354 KW/m^2$) to a=2.06($240 KW/m^2$), and then the blue flame mode zone was form a=1.87($266 KW/m^2$) to a=2.06($240 KW/m^2$) and the radiant mode one was form a=1.4($354 KW/m^2$) to a =1.78($278 KW/m^2$). And the flame was not fired when a is less than the lean condition a=2.45($202 KW/m^2$).
Research on usage of syngas produced by waste gasification is on going all around the world. Syngas which consists of $H_2$, CO, $CO_2$, $N_2$, has different combustion characteristics from current city gas; due to distinct flame propagation speed of the fuel, syngas has different spark timing and air fuel ratio at maximum generating efficiency. This is why finding both the optimum point of spark timing and air fuel ratio is so important in order to improve thermo efficiency and secure stable running of gas generated by relatively low heating value syngas. Moreover, since emission of $NO_x$ is strictly regulated, it is important to operate lean burn condition that reduces NOx emission.

Solid oxide fuel cells(SOFCs) can convert the chemical energy of fuel into electricity directly. With the rising fuel prices and stricter emission requirement, SOFCs have been widely recognized as a promising technology in the near future. In this study, lean premixed flame using the orifice swirl burner was analyzed numerically and experimentally. We used the program CHEMKIN and the GRI 3.0 chemical reaction mechanism for the calculation of burning velocity and adiabatic flame temperature to investigate the effects of equivalence ratio on the adiabatic flame temperature and burning velocity respectively. Burning velocity of hydrogen was calculated by CHEMKIN simulation was 325cm/s, which was faster than that of methane having 42 cm/s at the same equivalence ratio. Also Ansys Fluent was used so as to analysis the performance with alteration of swirl structure and orifice mixer structure. This experimental study focused on stability and emission characteristics and the influence of swirl and orifice mixer in Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Systme burner. The results show that the stable blue flame with different equivalence ratio. NOx was measured below 20 ppm from equivalence ratios 0.72 to 0.84 and CO which is a very important emission index in combustor was observed below 160 ppm under the same equivalence region.
This study has numerically modelled the combustion processes of the turbulent swirling premixed lifted flames in the low-swirl burner (LSB). In these turbulent swirling premixed flames, the four tangentially- injected air jets induce the turbulent swirling flow which plays the crucial role to stabilize the turbulent lifted flame. In the present approach, the turbulence-chemistry interaction is represented by the level-set based flame let model. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional computations are made for the various swirl numbers and nozzle length. In terms of the centerline velocity profiles and flame liftoff heights, numerical results are compared with experimental data The three-dimensional approach yields the much better conformity with agreements with measurements without any analytic assumptions on the inlet swirl profiles, compared to the two-dimensional approach. Numerical clearly results indicate that the present level-set based flamelet approach has realistically simulated the structure and stabilization mechanism of the turbulent swirling stoichiometric and lean-premixed lifted flames in the low-swirl burner.

An experimental study was performed to investigate the characteristics of chemiluminescence in a radiant burner, varying the excess air ratio from 0.91 to 1.67 at firing rate 80.5 to 134.2 kW/m2 on $OH^*,\;CH^*,\;{C_2}^*$ in LNG-Air premixed flames. The signals from electronically excited states of $OH^*,\;CH^*,\;{C_2}^*$ were detected using a Intensified Couple Charged Detector (ICCD) camera. The measurements of exhausted emission were made to investigate the correlation between chemiluminescence and emissions. The chemiluminescence intensity was increased with increase of firing rate like characteristics of $NO_x$ emission. $NO_x$ also increased with increase of firing rate and excess air ratio. It is found that offset of firing rate is more dominant excess air ratio $NO_x$ emission. The maximum chemiluminescence intensity occurs near the stoichiometric excess air ratio or lean conditions in case of high firing rate and the maximum intensity occurs rather than rich conditions in case of relatively low firing rate. Amount of $NO_x$ emission is maximum at near stoichiometric excess air ratio, which is chemiluminescence intensity is maximum.
Flickering behaviors of lean premixed flame of propane/air and methane/air flame anchored by a pilot flame in a tube were investigated. Unsteady behaviors of the flame were monitored by a high speed ICCD camera and the flickering frequency was defined as the number of flame curvatures passing a fixed spatial point in a second. Unlike previous studies in which flames are in open condition so that the flickering mechanism is an unstable interaction of hot buoyant products with the ambient air, flames in this study are surrounded by a tube which means they are not open to ambient air, so that there is no interaction between hot buoyant products and ambient air. Despite the fact, there exists flickering phenomena and the flickering frequency ranges from 10 Hz to 50 Hz which is wider compared to previous studies. We relate the flickering mechanism to flame-generated vorticity and analytic solution for locally approximated flow is used. As a result, the relationship between flickering wavelength and dimensionless vorticity is acquired and the cause of higher range of flickering frequency is explained.
This work deals with a controlled auto-ignition (CAI) single cylinder gasoline engine, focusing on the extension of operating conditions. The fuel is injected indirectly into electrically heated inlet air flow. In order to keep a homogeneous air-fuel mixing, the fuel injector is water-cooled by a specially designed coolant passage. Investigated are the engine performance and emission characteristics under the wide range of operating conditions such as 40 in the air-fuel ratio, 1000 to 1800 rpm in the engine speed, $150\;to\;180^{\circ}C$ in the inlet-air temperature, and $80^{\circ}$ BTDC to $20^{\circ}$ ATDC in the injection timing. A controlled auto-ignition gasoline engine can be achieved that the ultra lean-burn with self-ignition of gasoline fuel by heating inlet air. It can be achieved that the emission concentrations of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxide had been significantly reduced by CAI combustion compared with conventional spark ignition engine.
The Measurement of concentration patterns for $C_2$, CH and OH radicals in the premixed propane-air flame could be managed through an image processing technique. This technique was applied to the three kinds of flames on a bunsen burner-mixtures of fuel to be lean, optimum and excessive respectively. The image processing system was complished by treating single wavelength flame images around the eac radical luminescence band, which was obtained by using a set of narrow band pass filters, an image intensifier, CCD and PC. It was possible to observe and predict the reaction zone and the concentration distribution of the radicals, Spatial distribution of each radicals in the raaction zone gave us enough informations to analyze the reaction mechanisms in $C_mH_n$ combustion process. According to this informations, the image of $C_2$ radical exists at front zone, following the images of CH and OH radicals at downstream.
Hydrogen is seen as one of the important energy vectors of the next century. Hydrogen as a renewable energy source, provides the potential for a sustainable development particularly in the transportation sector. Hydrogen driven vehicles reduce both local as well as global emissions. The laboratory of transporttechnology (University of Gent) converted a GM/Crusader V-8 engine for hydrogen use. Once the engine is optimised, it will be built in a low-floor midsize hydrogen city bus for public demonstration. For a complete control of the combustion process and to increase the resistance to backfire (explosion of the air-fuel mixture in the inlet manifold), a sequential timed multipoint injection of hydrogen and an electronic management system is chosen. The results as a function of the engine parameters (ignition timing. injection timing and duration, injection pressure) we given. Special focus is given to topics related to the use of hydrogen as a fuel: ignition characteristics (importance of electrode distance), quality of the lubricating oil (crankcase gases with high contents of hydrogen), oxygen sensors (very lean operating conditions), noise reduction (configuration and length of inlet pipes). The advantages and disadvantages of a power regulation only by the air to fuel ratio (as for diesel engines) against a throttle regulation (normal gasoline or gas regulation) are examined. Finally the goals of the development of the engine are reached: power output of 90 kW, torque of 300 Nm, extremely low emission levels and backfire-safe operation.
