A high energy ignition system is essential for lean burn or high EGR gasoline engine, which is getting more and more interest to improve fuel economy. The high energy ignition systems comprise plasma jet, laser beam, corona discharge and so on. In this study, a high energy ignition system using corona discharge is developed and tested in a constant volume combustion chamber. The developed system shows extension of lean limit of propane-air mixture and enhencement of combustion speed. Various shape of corona discharge plugs are also tested and compared in this study.

Hydrogen-natural gas blends(HCNG) engine is optimizing technology of performance and emission characteristics with use of hydrogen's fast flame speed and wide flammability limit. As lean-burn limit is extended, the improvement in thermal efficiency and harmful emissions can be achieved. However, the extension of lean-burn limit under a wide open throttle operation point could be realized with the increase in boosting capacity in a lean-burn engine with turbo-charging system. In the present study, the power output characteristics of HCNG engine with turbo-charger change is assessed and feasibility of the increase in boosting capacity is evaluated. The turbo-charger design with high efficiency at higher flow rate rather than higher boosting pressure makes efficient operation possible at relatively rich mixture condition.

Combustion and fuel distribution characteristics of heavy duty engine with the liquid phase LPG injection(LPLI) were studied in a single cylinder engine, Swirl ratio were varied between 1.2, 2.3, and 3.4 following Ricardo swirl number(Rs) definition, Rs=2.3 showed the best results with lower cycle-by-cycle variation and shorter burning duration in the lean region while strong swirl(Rs=3.4) made these worse for combustion enhancement. Excessive swirl resulted in reverse effects due to high heat transfer and initial flame kernel quenching. Fuel injection timings were categorized with open valve injection(OVI) and closed valve injection(CVI). Open valve injection showed shorter combustion duration and extended lean limit. The formation of rich mixture in the spark plug vicinity was achieved by open valve injection. With higher swirl strength(Rs=3.4) and open valve injection, the cloud of fuel followed the flow direction and the radial air/fuel mixing was limited by strong swirl flow. It was expected that axial stratification was maintained with open-valve injection if the radial component of the swirling motion was stronger than the axial components. The axial fuel stratification and concentration were sensitive to fuel injection timing in case of Rs=3.4 while those were relatively independent of the injection timing in case of Rs=2.3.

In this paper, we find a method to improve ignitability using methanol which is prospective as an alternative fuel. The constant volume combuster is divided into main chamber and sub-cham¬ber. These two chambers are linked by an adapter which is shaped like a cup. We also compare CDI to HIS that is revised in our laboratory for making a scrutiny into the effects of ignition char¬acteristics. Besides, we analyze a flame propagation process in the main and sub-chamber through taking pictures 10, 000 frames per second by high speed camera at the state being fabricated quartz glass aside main and sub-chamber.

The influences of number of spark plug on ignitability, combustion characteristics and combustion promotion effect were examined to establish the design conception of spark ignition system for lean burn. Ignitability was increased remarkably by increasing of number of spark plug at combustion wall. Combustion duration was shortened and maximum combustion pressure was increased in accordance with increasing of spark plug number. Rate of overall combustion promotion considered of combustion duration and combustion pressure was 28% in two point ignition and 40% in four point ignition. It was verified that heat release, heat loss and combustion duration were affected by flame area, heat transfer area and maximum flame travel distance respectively.
Although CNG is able to meet the current emission standards, it is expected to be impossible to satisfy the requirements of the next EURO-6 emission regulation without an additional after-treatment device. Hydrogen is known to be a gaseous fuel which features the wide flammability limit and the fast reactivity. A certain amount of hydrogen addition to CNG is able to extend the lean combustion range and produce lesser amounts of harmful emissions. In this research, the combustion and emission characteristics of HCNG(mixture of Hydrogen and CNG) fuel were experimented in an 11-liter heavy duty lean burn engine varying hydrogen contents, air-to-fuel ratio and spark timing. The optimization of this HCNG engine for a city bus was performed through the evaluations of oxidation catalyst characteristics.
Using a counterflow burner, downstream interactions between $CH_4$-air and $H_2/N_2$-Air premixed flames with various equivalence ratios has been experimentally investigated. Flame stability maps on triple and twin flames are provided in terms of global strain rate and equivalence ratio. Lean and rich flammable limits are examined for methane/air and hydrogen/nitrogen/air mixtures over the entire range of mixture concentrations in the interacting flames. Results show that these flammable limits can be significantly modified in the presence of interaction such that mixture conditions beyond the flammability limit can be still burn if it is supported by stronger flame. The experiment also discusses various oscillatory instabilities in a stability map.

A prior fundamental study was executed using a constant volume chamber (CVC) to improve the burning characteristics of lean pre-mixture by the injection of active radicals generated in the sub-chamber of the CVC. The Radical ignition (RI) technique shows remarkable progress in the burning velocity and combustible lean limit compared with the results of the spark ignition (SI) technique. The optimum design value of the sub-chamber geometry is near $0.11cm^{-1}$ for the ratio of the total area of the holes to the sub-chamber volume $(A_h/V_s)$. In this study, based on the former experimental results, the additional works have been performed to examine the effects of the geometry change in the number $(N_h)$, the total section area $(A_h)$, and diameter $(D_h)$ of the passage holes on the combustion characteristics in the CVC. Also ambient conditions such as the initial temperature and the initial pressure of the mixture were selected as experimental parameters and the effects of residual gas at the chamber on the combustion characteristics were investigated. As a result, the correlation between the passage hole number and overall passage hole area was grasped. The effects of the initial temperature were significant, but on the other hand, those of the initial pressure were weak. A more detailed analysis on the residual gas is required in the future.

To develop a hydrogen fueled engine with external mixture which uses in high reliability, low cost and low pressure, the single cylinder research engine with MCVVT(Mechanical Continuous Variable Valve Timing) system is developed and its basic characteristics analyzed. The MCVVT developed has high reliability and the valve timing change is possible in wide range continuously. Though the mechanical loss due to MCVVT system is increased a little, back-fire suppression research for valve overlap period is no difficulty. It's also confirmed that the hydrogen-fueled engine has lower torque and is possible high lean burn. As fuel-air equivalence ratio is high, as thermal efficiency is remarkable increasing.

For natural gas and LPG fuel, measurements on the concentrations of individual exhaust hydrocarbon species have been made as a function of air-fuel ratio in a 2-liter four-cylinder engine using a gas chromatography. NMHC in addition to the species of HC, other emissions such as CO$_2$, CO and NOx were examined for natural gas and LPG at 1800rpm far two compression ratios (8.6 and 10.6). Fuel conversion efficiencies were also investigated together with emissions to study the effect of engine parameters on the combustion performances in gas engines especially under the lean bum conditions. It was found that CO$_2$ emission decreased with smaller C value of fuel, leaner mixture strength and the higher compression ratio. HC emissions from LPG engine consisted primarily of propane (larger 60%), ethylene and propylene, while main emissions from natural gas were mothane (larger than 60%), ethane, ethylene and propane on the average. The natural gas was proved to give the less ozone formation than LPG fuel. This was accomplished by reducing the emissions of propylene, which has relatively high MIR factor, and propane that originally has large portion of LPG. In addition, natural gas shows a benefit in other emissions (i.e. NMHC,NOx, CO$_2$and CO), SR and BSR values except fuel conversion efficiency.
