  • The eigenvalue problems involving the diffraction of waves by multi-layered grating configurations can be explained by rigorous modal expansion terms. Such a modal solution can be represented by equivalent transmission-line networks, which are generalized forms of simple conventional circuits. This approach brings considerable physical insight into the grating diffraction process of the fields everywhere. In particular, the transmission-line representation can serve as a template for computational algorithms that systematically evaluate dispersion properties, radiation effects and other optical characteristics that are not readily obtained by other methods. To illustrate the validity of the present rigorous approach, the previous research works are numerically confirmed and the results agree well each other.

  • The radiation characteristics of leaky antenna from the dielectric-coated conducting cylinder with periodic corrugation are investigated theoretically for the infinite and finite periodic structures. For the infinite periodic structure, mode-matching method is applied. The integral equation is derived for the finite periodic structure by use of the Fourier transform and mode expansion and a simultaneous linear equation is obtained. The influences of the corrugation slot width, corrugation depth, dielectric thickness, cylinder radius, and finite corrugation number on the radiation characteristics (leakage constant, phase constant, and radiation pattern) are investigated. The results of the finite periodic corrugations are compared with those of the infinite extent structure and good agreement is found. To reduce high side lobe levels of the uniform finite periodic structure, tapering process on the beginning and end section of antenna and nonuniform quasi-period slot arrays are considered. Especially, for the corrugation period, width and depth used for a corrugated surface wave antenna, through the proper tapering process, end-fire radiation pattern with reduced side lobe levels is given.

  • In a sodium-cooled fast reactor, which is a Generation-IV reactor, refueling is conducted by rotating, but not opening, the reactor head to prevent a reaction between the sodium, water and air. Therefore, an inspection technique that checks for the presence of any obstacles between the reactor core and the upper internal structure, which could disturb the rotation of the reactor head, is essential prior to the refueling of a sodium-cooled fast reactor. To this end, an ultrasound-based inspection technique should be employed because the opacity of the sodium prevents conventional optical inspection techniques from being applied to the monitoring of obstacles. In this study, a ranging inspection technique using a plate-type ultrasonic waveguide sensor was developed to monitor the presence of any obstacles between the reactor core and the upper internal structure in the opaque sodium. Because the waveguide sensor installs an ultrasonic transducer in a relatively cold region and transmits the ultrasonic waves into the hot radioactive liquid sodium through a long waveguide, it offers better reliability and is less susceptible to thermal or radiation damage. A 10 m horizontal beam waveguide sensor capable of radiating an ultrasonic wave horizontally was developed, and beam profile measurements and basic experiments were carried out to investigate the characteristics of the developed sensor. The beam width and propagation distance of the ultrasonic wave radiated from the sensor were assessed based on the experimental results. Finally, a feasibility test using cylindrical targets (corresponding to the shape of possible obstacles) was also conducted to evaluate the applicability of the developed ranging inspection technique to actual applications.
