In general, it is known that the portion of leakage loss is more than 20 % of total loss in scroll compressor. So far many studies have been done to improve the leakage problem and volumetric efficiency. In order to do this it is necessary that the leakage is exactly evaluated for conventional scroll model. Almost all studies that have been done were assumed that the clearance remains constant while operating. But in actual operating conditions, scroll wrap is deformed due to elevated refrigerant gas temperature. And this makes the leakage clearance change, so the leakage mass flow and the volumetric efficiency are also changed. In this study we assumed the steady state operating condition and obtain the average temperature and convection heat transfer coefficient in terms of involute angle. With these results, using finite element method we analyzed the heat transfer of scroll wrap, then did thermal deformation analysis. Then we obtain the leakage clearance and do the leakage and volumetric efficiency analysis. Compared with undeformed feature, we examine the effect of the thermal deformation on the leakage. The results say that the leakage mass flow for the case of considering thermal deformation is less than that for the unconsidered one, and this means that the leakage clearance is reduced due to thermal deformation.
1D-numerical analysis of the network algorithm with the orifice equation for the relationship between pressure difference and flowrate has been mostly used to analyse leakage flow at the gap. In this study, a 3D-numerical method applying momentum loss model to the gap region in the computational domain is represented to reflect effectively the effect of leakage flow by determining the proportion of pressure difference to air passage velocity. While the 3D-numerical method is verified through the computation of the two compartments model, the numerical analysis of the stack effect in a building stairway is performed. As the temperature of air outside drops, the pressure in the upper stairway and leakage flowrate through the gap in the door rise. The change of gap area does not have an effect on pressure in the stairway for the analysis conditions.
The high energy fluid leakage from the high temperature and high differential pressure drop system of NPPs (Nuclear Power Plants) decreases efficiency and consequently leads to considerable economic loss due to less power production. Also, the leakage possibly damages critical parts of components such as valve and trim with the effect of cavitation, flashing, and erosion, etc. and deteriorates its performance. Thus, in this study, we diagnosed the as-is leakage for four (4) main steam drain valves and two (2) steam traps of Yonggwang 1,2 units during normal operation by using multi-measuring technique and observed the occurrence of fine leakage. In the course of measuring fluid leakage, the sign of fine leakage is estimated to be the leakage from orifice. By converting the leakage to energy loss, it is equivalent to the amount of several hundred thousand won per each unit, which supports the basis for the justification of fine leakage.
Recently, high performance machining center requires special type of sealing mechanism that prevent a leakage of oil jet or oil mist lubrication system. Sealing of oil-air mixture plays important r oles to have an enhanced lubrication for performance machining center. Current work emphasizes on investigations of the air jet effect on the protective collar type labyrinth seal. To improve sealing capabilities of conventional labyrinth seals, air jet is injected against the leakage flow. In this study, an adapted model is introduced to improve sealing capability of conventional non-contact type seals. It has a combined geometry of a protective collar type and an air jet type. Both of a numerical analysis by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and experimental measurements are carried out to verify sealing improvement. The sealing effects of the leakage clearance and the air jet magnitude aic studied in various parameters. Gas or liquid has been used as a working fluid for most of nori-contact types seals including the labyrinth seal. However, it is more reasonable to regard two-phase flows because oil mist or oil jet are used for high performance spindle's lubrication. In this study, working fluid is regarded as two phases that are mixed flow of oil and air phase. Both of turbulence and compressible flow model are also introduced in a CFD analysis to represent an isentropic process. Estimation of non-leaking property is determined by amount of pressure drop in the leakage path. Results of pressure drop in the experiment match reasonably to those of the simulation by introducing a flow coefficient. Effect of the sealing improvement is explained as decreasing of leakage clearance by air jetting. Thus, sealing effect is improved by amount of air jetting even though clearance becomes larger
Helmholtz resonator has been used, especially in intake and exhaust systems of vehicles, due to its good noise reduction characteristics at low frequencies. Many approaches have been developed to predict the acoustic behavior of the resonator with the assumption that there is no leakage from the resonator. However, its behavior may be affected by leakage which may exist in manufacturing processes or on purpose. This study investigates the effect of leakage on the noise reduction characteristics of Helmholtz resonator with two practical examples. One is a resonator with a gap between baffle and housing of the resonator and the other one is a resonator with two drain holes on the baffle. The measured transmission loss shows that the resonance frequencies are considerably shifted to higher frequency due to the leakage. The Boundary Element Method was applied to predict the transmission loss of the Helmholtz resonator with drain holes. The comparison between the measured and predicted transmission loss shows that the acoustic impedance of the holes is essential for accurate predictions of the transmission loss.

Thermal stratification has continuously caused several piping failures in nuclear power plants since the early 1980s. However, this critical thermal effect was not considered when the old nuclear power plants were designed. Therefore, it is urgent to evaluate this unexpected thermal effect on the structural integrity of piping systems. In this paper, the thermal effects of stratified flow in two different safety injection piping systems were investigated by using a coupled CFD-FE method. Since stratified flow is generally generated by turbulent penetration and/or valve leakage, thermal stress analyses as well as CFD analyses were carried out considering these two primary causes. Numerical results show that the most critical factor governing thermal stratification is valve leakage and that temperature distribution significantly changes according to the leakage path. In particular, in-leakage has a high possibility of causing considerable structural problems in RCS piping.
Due to the rapid spread and low minimum ignition energy of hydrogen, rupture is highly likely to cause fire, explosion and major accidents. The self-ignition of high-pressure hydrogen is highly likely to ignite immediately when it leaks from an open space, resulting in jet fire. Results of the diffusion and leakage simulation show that jet effect occurs from the leakage source to a certain distance. And at the end of location, the vapor cloud explosion can be occurred due to the formation of hydrogen vapor clouds by built-up. In the result, it is important that depending on the time of ignition, a jet fire or a vapor cloud explosion may occur. Therefore, it is necessary to take into account jet effect by location of leakage source and establish a damage minimizing plan for the possible jet fire or vapor cloud explosion. And it is required to any kind of measurements such as an interlock system to prevent hydrogen leakage or minimize the amount of leakage when detecting leakage of gas.
Present study was undertaken to investigate the leakage and friction of self-lubricating piston seal rings. A crank-piston type gas leakage test set-up was constructed. The piston rings were made of PTFE-polyimide composite. The free gap configurations of the seal rings were butt and step types. Eccentric tension rings were used to give the seal rings prepressure between the seal rings and cylinder wall. Two sizes of the tension rings were installed to investigate their effect on the gas leakage and friction of the seal rings. The results showed that step type seal rings are superior than the butt types. High tension spring rings resulted in low leakage and high friction loss. In order to reduce the gas leakage and friction loss of the piston seal rings, there should be compromise between the number of ring stages and prepressure of the tension rings.
This paper describes an influence of system voltage harmonics on arrester deterioration diagnostic techniques based on leakage current measurement because the resistive current is composed of two components caused by nonlinear characteristics of arrester and by system voltage harmonics. Resistive leakage currents of arresters, which can be evaluated by the third harmonic component of total leakage currents, increase with its deterioration progress. In this paper, we developed a PSpice model for ZnO arrester to simulate the harmonics' effect described above. In simulation, pure sinusoidal voltage and the $3^{rd}$ harmonic voltage are applied to the model, and the leakage current changes are compared. The simulation results showed that the magnitudes of resistive leakage current depend not only on the phase of system voltage harmonics but also on the magnitude of it.
