Leak noise is a good source to identify the exact location of a leak point of underground water pipelines. Water leak generates broadband noise from a leak location and can be propagated to both directions of water pipes. This sound propagation due to leak in water pipelines is not a non-dispersive wave any more because of the surrounding pipes and soil. However, the necessity of long-range detection of this leak location makes to identify low-frequency acoustic waves rather than high frequency ones. Acoustic wave propagation coupled with surrounding boundaries including cast iron pipes is theoretically analyzed and the wave velocity was confirmed with experiment. The leak locations were identified both by the acoustic emission (AE) method and the cross-correlation method. In a short-range distance, both the AE method and cross-correlation method are effective to detect leak position. However, the detection for a long-range distance required a lower frequency range accelerometers only because higher frequency waves were attenuated very quickly with the increase of propagation paths. Two algorithms for the cross-correlation function were suggested, and a long-range detection has been achieved at real underground water pipelines longer than 300m.

Pipeline is making the most use of transportation of petroleum products on the land. But due to tremendous accident or environmental disaster by oil pipeline leak or pipeline stolen, leak detection systems have been used for preventing it. Leak detection method based on negative pressure wave has been used at the long distance pipeline. But even if it has showed good leak detection quality, due to making a lot of false alarm, it has weak point that disturbs concentration to system. This study suggests algorithm and method of using volume balance to decrease false-alarm of pipeline leak detection system based on negative pressure wave.

Leaks in underground pipelines can cause social, environmental and economical problems. One of a good contermeasures of leaks Is to find and repair of leak points of pipes. Leak noise is a good source to identify the location of leak points of pipelines. Although there have been several methods to detect the leak location with leak noise, such as listening rods, hydrophones or ground microphones, they were not so efficient tools beca. In this paper, two accelermeters are used to detect leak locations which could provide an easier and efficient method. The filtering, signal processing and algorithm is described for the detection of leak location. A 120m-long pipeline system for experiment is installed and the results with the system show that the algorithm with the two accelerometers gives very accurate pinpointing of leaks. Theoretical analysis of sound wave propagation speed in underground pipes is also described.
In this study, a method of leakage detection was proposed to locate leak position for a reservoir pipeline valve system using wavelet coherence analysis for an injected pressure wave. An unsteady flow analyzer handled nonlinear valve maneuver and corresponding experimental result were compared. Time series of pressure head were analyzed through wavelet coherence analysis both for no leak and leak conditions. The leak information can be obtained through either time domain reflectometry or the difference in wavelet coherence level, which provide predictions in terms of leak location. The reconstructed pressure signal facilitates the identification of leak presence comparing with existing wavelet coherence analysis.
When a leak occurs in the buried pipelines, The leak locations are able to detected by using the vibration sensors. These leak detection system, intended for incompressible fluid, such as water, are of using the wave propagation velocity and a signal arrival time delay between the sensors. In this paper, to develop a leak location detection system for a compressible fluid such as gas, the conventional detection methods have been studied, improved, and verified through the experiment using the compressed air. It confirmed that it is possible to detect the leak location for compressible fluid in the buried pipelines and to be applicable to the development of a leak location detection system in buried pipelines for gas.

The safe operation of high pressure pipe line systems is of significant importance. Leaks due to faulty operation from the pipelines can lead to considerable product losses and to exposure of community to dangerous gases. There are several leak detection methods, which have been recently suggested on pipeline network. The negative pressure wave detection technology, which has advantages of short time detection availability, accurate leaking location estimate capability and cost effective, is concentrated in this study. Theoretical analysis of the flow characteristics for leaking through a hole on the pipe wall has been performed by using CFD++, commercial CFD package. The results of 3-dimensional analysis near leaking hole confirm the occurrence of negative pressure wave and verify the characteristics of propagation of the wave which travels with speed equal to the speed of sound in the pipeline contents. For the application of long pipe line system. The method of 1-dimensional analysis has been suggested and verified with results of CFD++.
Water leak is one of topics with great concern in Korea and many other countries, because of decreasing water supplies and the deterioration of old pipeworks. Correlation techniques have been widely used in leak detection of water pipes, which allow to locate a leak point based on the correlation of leak noise at two sites along water pipes. In this study, both the cross-correlation method and the conventional arrival time difference method are applied in order to analyze and to locate a leak point of a water pipe. In experiment, a 150 m of whole length waterwork pipeline system was constructed in a ground, and several types of leak noise were installed on the pipeline in order to control leak condition. Both the cross-correlation technique and the arrival time difference method showed favorable results at leak detection with the experimental pipeline system.
