  • Kanagawa hemolysin (KH), an exotoxin produced from Kanagawa phenomenon-positive Vibrio parahemolyticus, has been shown to possess various biological activities including hemolysis, enterotoxicity, cytotoxicity, and cardiotoxicity. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of KH on the cardiovascular system and its mechanism, employing in vivo and in vitro experiments of the rat. Intracerebroventricular (icv) administration of 100 mHU KH produced a marked and continuous pressor effect (icv KH-pressor effect), and the icv pressor effect was not repeatable. However, intravenous (iv) injection of the same dose of KH induced a prominent depressor effect (iv KH-depressor effect). The icv KH-pressor effect was inhibited by acid-denaturation, while the iv KH-depressor effect was not. Simultaneous icv administration of the three agents (ouabain, diltiazem, or bumetanide: $10{\mu}g/kg$ each) significantly reduced the pressor effect. The icv KH-pressor effect was inhibited by treatment with iv phentolamine or chlorisondamine, but was not affected by iv candesartan. The iv KH-depressor effect was repeatable and was attenuated by treatment with iv NAME or methylene blue. In vitro experiments using isolated thoracic aorta, $10^{-6}$ M phenylephrine (PE) and 50 mM KCl produced a sustained contraction. In rings contracted with either agents, KH showed relaxant responses in a concentration- dependent fashion and the relaxation (KH-vasorelaxation) was not dependent on the existence of the endothelium. The KH-vasorelaxation in the endothelium-intact rings contracted by PE was abolished by methylene blue treatment. In summary, the present findings suggest that in the icv KH-pressor effect the cation leak-inducing action of KH is implicated, which leads to the increased central sympathetic tone, that the iv KH-depressor effect results from the vasorelaxation via NO-guanylate cyclase system, and that the KH-vasorelaxation is independent of the endothelium and the guanylate cyclase system is involved in it. In conclusion, the mechanism of KH producing the icv pressor effect may not be identical to that of KH producing the iv depressor effect.

  • Fracture resistance(J-R) curves, which are used for elastic-plastic fracture mechanics analyses, are known to be dependent on the specimen geometry. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of crack tip constraint an the J-R curves in CT specimens. Fracture toughness tests on CT specimens with varying planform size were performed and test results showed that the J-R curves were increased with an increase in the planform size. Finite element analysis were also performed and the numerical results showed that this experimental phenomenon was probably due to the relaxation of crack tip constraint resulting from the stress triaxiality.

  • The diffuser which is conventionally adapted to MBR, has problem that decreasing the cleaning effect of membrane module by inflexible air supply due to the occlusion of sludge from diffuser hole. To solve this problem, diffuser structure of submerged module should be improved to discharge sludge which is flow into the diffuser for prevent occlusion in the diffuser. In this study, the structure of the diffuser was reformed to open lower part for preclusion the blocking. And the outlet diameter of the diffuser was drawn through the condition for the depth of water and air rate, to prevent air-leak condition of improved diffuser. Moreover, application is evaluated by comparing test with occlusion effect of the conventional and improved diffuser. From the results, air-water boundary changes are steady with changes of water depth and it shows linear relation about air rate. By using this linear numerical formula, the height of diffuser's outlet can be decided. Also, it displays that it can prevent the occlusion effect during the comparing test. Hereafter, if this diffuser is applied to practical MBR process, the occlusion problem of diffuser will be disappeared.

  • This study examined the effect of Jojoba oil on the protection of virgin black hair and hair damaged by bleaching. Both hair types were treated for 35 days with 100% Jojoba oil or one of two types of hair conditioner, one formulated with 3% of Jojoba oil and the other formulated without Jojoba oil. The effect of protection was examined in terms of the change in the color, tensile stress, weight, and amount of protein leak compared to untreated black hair or bleached hair. The composition of fatty acids in the Jojoba oil was analyzed using the Gas chromatography mass spectrometry. The differences among the three treatments were statistically tested by one-way analysis of variance test and the Duncan post-hoc test at α = .05. The main fatty acid contained in the Jojoba oil was 11-eicosenoic acid (75.14%). Based on the statistical test it was found that 100% Jojoba oil was the most effective in increasing the tensile stress of black hair and the weight of bleached hair after 35 days of treatment.

  • A theoretical investigation to find thermodynamically optimum design conditions of conduction-cooled Peltier current leads is performed. A Peltier current lead (PCL) is composed of a thermoelectric element (TE), a metallic lead and a high temperature superconductor (HTS) lead in the order of decreasing temperature. Mathematical expressions for the minimum heat flow per unit current crossing the TE-metal interface and the minimum heat flow per unit current from the metal lead to the joint of the metal and the HTS leads are obtained. It is shown that the temperature at the TE -metal interface possesses a unique optimal value that minimizes the heat flow to the joint and that this optimal value depends on the material properties of the TE and the metallic lead but not the joint temperature nor electric current. It is also shown that there exists a unique optimal value for the joint temperature between the metal and the HTS leads that minimizes the sum of the power dissipated by ohmic heating in the current leads and the refrigerator power consumed to cool the lead, for a given length of the HTS.

  • Calcium is well known role for signal transduction in a neuron cell. Various processes and parameters modulate the intracellular calcium signaling process. A number of experimental and theoretical attempts are reported in the literature for study of calcium signaling in neuron cells. But still the role of various processes, components and parameters involved in calcium signaling is still not well understood. In this paper an attempt has been made to develop two dimensional finite element model to study calcium diffusion in neuron cells. The JRyR, JSERCA and JLeak, the exogenous buffers like EGTA and BAPTA, and diffusion coefficients have been incorporated in the model. Appropriate boundary conditions have been framed. Triangular ring elements have been employed to discretized the region. The effect of these parameters on calcium diffusion has been studied with the help of numerical results.

  • If the Leak-Before-Break (LBB) concept is applicable to the nuclear piping design, it is not necessary to consider the dynamic effect due to pipe rupture. Therefore, the construction cost can be significantly reduced by eliminating unnecessary pipe whip restraints and jet impingement devices. The objective of this paper is to develop the Piping Evaluation Diagram (PED) for efficient application of LBB concept to piping system at an initial piping design stage. For this purpose, the 3-D finite element analyses were performed to evaluate the crack stability. And the stress-strain curve based on the pipe material tests were used to calculate the detectable leakage crack length. Finally, the present PED which was composed as a function of NOP load and allowable SSE load, was developed for an application of LBB concept to the safety injection and shutdown cooling line in Korean Next Generation Reactor (KNGR).

  • The degree of air pollution is usually presented in terms of concentration. But, in evaluating the environmental impacts or air pollution control policies, the concentration values need to be interpreted in terms of damage effects on property and human health. The damage effect varies with the types of pollution, subjects and land use pattern of an affected area. Therefore, this study is aimed at developing a method of analyzing effects of various types of air pollutions on surrounding environmental setting with the EIMS (Environmental Information Management System) developed for land suitability analysis. Using the method formulated in this study, the long- term effects of such pollutants as $SO_2$ and HF on types of vegetation and residents, and potential, short-term effects of HCl leak accidents from manufacturing facilities in Ulsan and Onsan Industrial complex are analyzed. The presentation of the damage effects of air pollution rather than the concentration of pollutants will be useful for the preparation of environmental impact statements, the formulation of environmental policies, and the development of land use plans in heavily industrialized areas.
