Sink (grain)-filling rates of IR667 line (Suwon 213 and 214) and local leading varieties (Jinheung and Paldal) were investigated in relation to sink-source ratio, sink-source distance, forms of photosynthates, and weather factors. The results are as follows. 1. IR667 line have higher maximum filling rate (g. grain/day. ear) and shorter duration to reach maximum filling rate than local varieties. The curve pattern of sink-filling rate was high and steep type in IR667 line and low and broad type in local varieties. 2. Weather factors seem to give little effect on the curve pattern of sink-filling rate. 3. The functional sink-source distance (actual sink-source distance multiplied by the contribution rate of leaf for grain production) was shorter in upper leaves (flag and 2nd leaf) for IR667 line, the upper leaf-dependent type in grain production, and was longer in lower leaves (3rd and 4th) for local varieties, the lower leaf-dependent type. Specially short first internode from top may contribute to the upper leaf depencency of IR667 line. 4. According to free sugar-starch ratio (sugar/starch) in the culm and leaf sheath IR667 line could be classified as the high sugar type and the local varieties as the high starch type. The ratio of transportable form (sugar) to non transportable photosynthate (starch) seems to relate with sink-filling rate. And high sugar type is expected to have higher efficiency for grain production in view of energy balance. 5. A hypothesis that the higher in the uniformity within the series of productive structure the more efficient in grain production is proposed and discussed in relation to productivity. 6. According to the pattern of percent nutrient retention of each leaf blade IR667 showed the central retention type and Jinheung showed the apical retention type and each retention type appears to be a cause of each canopy conservation pattern. 7. From the content and percent distribution of nutrient in various organ IR667 could be classified as the leaf sheath dominant type and Jinheung as the leaf blade dominant type. 8. The fact that the greater the percent translocation of nutrient into grain the greater the percent nutrient retention in leaf blade was held between nitrogen and phosphorus within a variety and between varieties within a nutrient (N, P or K).

This study investigated which nutrient solution is suitable for growth and secondary metabolite contents when three different vegetable plants are grown simultaneously in one hydroponic cultivation bed. Seeds of pak choi (Brassica compestris L. ssp chinsensis), red mustard (Brassica juncea L.), and arugula (Eruca sativa Mill.) were sown in the shape of a triangle in three places on rockwool cubes. The rockwool cubes were placed in semi deepflow technique (semi-DFT) hydroponic systems in a rooftop greenhouse after three weeks of growth as seedlings then cultivated with four different nutrient solutions, Korea Horticultural Experiment Station (KHE), Hoagland, Otsuka-A, and Yamazaki, at the rooftop greenhouse for two weeks. The leaf area of pak choi cultivated in Otsuka-A was the largest but SPAD values, leaf area, and fresh weight of arugula were highest with KHE treatment. The total glucosinolate (GSL) content of pak choi was 151.7% higher in KHE than in Hoagland, and there was no significant difference in Yamazaki and Otsuka-A treatments. The total GSL content of red mustard was 34.6 μmol·g-1 in Hoagland, and it was 32.6% higher in Hoagland than in Yamazaki. Total GSL content of arugula was 57.5% higher in Yamazaki and Hoagland nutrients than in KHE and Otsuka-A nutrients solutions. The total GSL content of three plants grown with KHE was 40.7% higher than with Yamazaki, and the other nutrient solutions did not show significant differences. Therefore, KHE nutrient solution is considered suitable for nutrient solution composition for the cultivation of three different Brassicaceae crops in a single hydroponic cultivation system.
The compost leachate was dark-colored solution that leaches out of the bottom of the compost pile. The compost leachate was rich in nutrients and can potentially used in plant culture. In the organic production, commercial liquid fertilizer was used to insure the availability of nutrients during the formation of the yield. The cost of supplemental liquid fertilizer could be reduced by developing a fertilizer based on animal fertilizer. This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of different combination of compost leachate and conventional inorganic solution in hydroponic culture for lettuce growth. Six different treatments were applied. The compost leachate(CL) and nutrient solution(NS) were mixed by six different mixing ratios of 0:100, 20:80, 40:60, 60:40%, 80:20 and 100%:0% based on nitrogen content. The chemical nutrient solution was the solution of National Horticulture Research Station for the growth of leaf lettuce. The concentration of nutrient solution was adjusted 1.5 mS/cm in EC. The compost leachate was low in phosphorus(P), calcium(Ca), magnesium(Mg), but rich in potassium(K). The plant height of lettuce treated with CL 20+NS 80% was similar with 100% NS of control plot. Plant height was highest in the plot of CL 20+NS 80%. The treatment of 100% compost leachate was lowest in the growth characteristics of leaf lettuce. Number of leaf was very low in 100% compost leachate compared with plot of chemical nutrient solution. In the beginning of growth stage, SPAD value was reduced in plot treated with CL100%, but CL20+NS80% plot was higher compared to 100% compost leachate. SPAD value of leaf lettuce leaves was decreased as the amount of CL was increased. The dry weight of lettuce were 107.4, 104.2g in plot of NS 100% and CL 20%+NS80%, respectively. The leaf number and plant weight were decreased at high application plots of compost leachate. The leaf lettuce showed lowest in the plot treated with 100% compost leachate, and the growth of lettuce severely decreased after application of 100% CL treatment. The results showed that compost leachate can be use as liquid fertilizer for the organic hydroponic production. The mixture solution of 20% of compost leachate and 80% of nutrient solution could be used as a nutrition solution in hydroponic culture of leaf lettuce. Our studies have shown that is possible to produce using compost leachate, although growth is slower than when using a conventional inorganic hydroponic solution.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different surfactants on the fertilizer reduction and increase of the mineral nutrients uptake of lettuce (Latuca sativa L. 'Hanbatchungchima') in deep flow technique culture. The measured items from lettuce leaves expanded fully were growth, photosynthetic and transpiration rate, and mineral nutrient content K, Ca and Mg, respectively. The highest growth were observed at $0.3mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ polyvinyl alcohol (PV4-95) treatment, including lettuce grown in the half strength of nutrient solution. The highest photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate and mineral nutrient content were observed at $0.3mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ calcium lignosulfate (CLS) treatment. Therefore, high-quality leaf lettuce production could be achieved by apply proper surfactants PVA-95 and CLS, which can cut down the total amount of fertilizer and increase uptake of mineral nutrients.
Chinese white cabbage, Chinese flat cabbage, lettuce, garland chrysanthemum, and green perilla were grown in nutrient solution culture to investigate the effects of various media and nutrient solutions. The culture media were sand, mixed substrate(peatmoss : sand= 1 : 1), and non-media(deep-flow culture). The nutrient solutions were Cooper's, Hoagland's, and Yamazaki's solution. Plants were grown under different treatments for three weeks. Generally, the growth was greatest in non-media culture and followed mixed substrate culture, and poorest in sand culture. In non-media culture, the growth of Chinese white cabbage, Chinese flat cabbage, lettuce, and green perilla was good in Yamazaki's solution. And regardless of nutrient solution, garland chrysanthemum was good in non-media culture. Relative chlorophyll was not different among the treatments.

A three year's field experiment was carried out on newly reclaimed tidal saline soils to evaluate the salt tolerance and growht characteristics, and their relationship to dry matter production and nutrient quality of main selected pasture species. Nine temperate grasses (14 varieties) and two forage crops (sorghum and pearl millet) were grown under different mulching treatments with medium sand and red-yellow soils (fine loamy materials of Typic Hapludults) from 1986 to 1988. Tall wheatgrass, tall fescue, reed canarygrass and alfalfa showed a good tolerance to soil salinity, especially tall wheatgrass (cv. Alkar) produced 19.6 ton/ha dry matter yield annualy under mulching treatment with medium sand depth in lcm. Pearl millet (cv. Gahi-3) was also evaluated as a salt tolerable forage species. Under salt stress in newly reclaimed tidal lands, plant showed a decrease in the assimirable leaf area (LA) as well as specific leaf area (SP. LA) and a low leaf weight ratio(LWR), and it resulted in a low concentration of crude protein and low digestible dry matter contents. Absorption of macro and micro elements in the plant on tidal lands was increased markedly.
This experiment was conducted to clarify the effect of waste tire chip on the growth and nutrient content of Cymbidium Pine Clash 'Moon Venus'. There were no significant differences between bark only medium and mixed medium in leaf and stem growth. But in both medium and large size chip only, the leaf and stem growth decreased remarkably. The total number of roots, new roots and root length had similar tendency as in leaf and stem growth. In medium and large tire chip only, the decayed roots increased. There were no significant differences between bark only medium and mixed medium in total sugar, starch, content of chrolophyll, N, P and K, but decreased significantly in both medium and large size chip only.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of concentration of NO$_{3}$$^{[-10]}$ , $K^{+}$ and $Ca^{++}$ in nutrient solution on the seedlings growth of ‘Mudeungsan’watermelon. Seeds were sown on March 16, 1997. NO$_{3}$$^{[-10]}$ , $K^{+}$ and $Ca^{++}$ was treated with three different levels, respectively, NO$_{3}$$^{[-10]}$ = 106, 206, 406ppm; $K^{+}$ = 150, 200, 400 ppm; $Ca^{++}$ = 150, 200, 400 ppm. Plant growth was investigated at four-days interval in 10 days after treatment. Increasing N concentration in the nutrient solution increased the plant height, leaf area, number of leaves, fresh and dry weight of shoot while high concentration of K and Ca in the nutrient solution decreased the seedling growth in terms of leaf area, leaf dry weight. The uptake of N, K and Mg in petiole sap was positively affected by the adding of 206 ppm of nitrate, 150 ppm of potassium and 200 ppm of calcium levels, respectively. The P and Ca uptake in petiole sap was not affected by the N and K concentrations in the nutrient solution while K concentration above 200 ppm decreased the N and Mg content in petiole sap. High concentration of Ca in the nutrient solution increased the Ca content in petiole sap while Ca concentration above 200 ppm decreased the N content.
Lettuces were grown hydroponically in three different nutrient solutions, normal and 30 or 50 mM $KNO_3-added$ nutrient solutions, and the electrical conductivities of the nutrient solutions were 1.0, 4.5, and 6.5 dS/m, respectively. Lettuces grown in the $KNO_3-added$ nutrient solutions showed a decrease in the germination ratio and the lower indices of growth, such as plant height, stem diameter, leaf length, and leaf width. Microsomes were prepared from the roots of lettuce and characteristics of microsomal ATPases were investigated. The activities of microsomal ATPases grown in the 30 mM and 50 mM $KNO_3-added$ nutrient solutions were higher than that grown in the normal nutrient solution. The highest activities of microsomal ATPases were observed at pH 7.0 in all culture conditions. The activities of microsomal ATPases were increased in a reaction buffer solution containing high concentration of $K^+$, whereas they were decreased in a reaction buffer containing $Na^+$. The stimulating effect of $K^+$ in the reaction buffer was greater on the microsomal ATPases of lettuces grown in the $KNO_3-added$ nutrient solutions than that grown in the normal nutrient solution. These results imply that the activities of microsomal ATPases in the root tissue are increased as increasing the $KNO_3$ concentration in the hydroponical nutrient solution.
The objective of this study was to estimate the amount of nutrient and water taken up at different growth stages by cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. cv. Eunsung Backdadagi) grown in a closed substrate culture system. The amount of nutrient solution absorbed increased in proportion to days from planting at the first stage of growth and depended on the level of radiation after the mid stage of growth. After the mid growth stage, the amount of nutrient solution absorption was maintained at 80-100 mg.MJ$^{-1}$ . Total amount of absorbed inorganic ions except S increased since the nutrient solution absorption increased with the level of radiation, although the absorption rate of each inorganic ion declined. A highly significant correlation ($R^2$>0.9) was found between amount of inorganic ions absorbed and days after planting, LAI, total dry weight and leaf dry weight, but not with CGR. Correlation coefficient between days after planting and the amount of nutrient solution absorbed per unit radiation level was 0.92. Correlation coefficient between leaf area an the amount of nutrient solution absorbed per unit radiation level was 0.97. Regression of the amount of nutrient solution absorbed per unit radiation level and nutrient ions uptake showed a high significance ($R^2$>0.9).
