Sinowilsonia henryi is a rare and endangered plant, as well as an endemic species in China. In July 2018, leaf spot and blight disease was observed on S. henryi in Yichang, Hubei, China. A fungus isolated from disease tissues was identified as Gonatobotryum apiculatum based on morphology and sequence analyses of ITS and LSU regions. Phylogenetic analyses indicated that the species belongs to Dothioraceae (Dothideales). Morphologically, the species produced two distinct types of conidia from authentic media, both conidia were described here. Pathogenicity tests showed that the fungus is a pathogen causing leaf spots on S. henryi. This is the first report of leaf spot and blight disease on S. henryi caused by G. apiculatum in China.

Etiological and ecopathological studi88888es on the leaf blight of kiwifruit (Chinese gooseberry), a disease newly found in 1993 in Korea, were carried out in this experiment. The leaf blight symptom was prevalent in the southern area of Chonnam Province where kiwifruits were widely cultivated. The disease occurred from July to fall, causing early defoliation of kiwifruit vines. Small brownish circular or irregular lesions appeared initially on the leaves, starting from the marginal leaf areas, and enlarged. Afterwards small grayish black granules (acervuli) were formed on the lesions. The color of old lesions changed to grayish brown or grayish white. The causal fungus was identified as Pestalotiopsis menezesiana (Bress. & Torr.) Bissett according to its morphological characters and pathogenicity (pathogenic to Chinese gooseberry and grapevine, but not to other hosts of Pestalotiopsis spp.such as tea, apple, persimmon, and chestnut). As P. longiseta and P. neglecta were reported recently in Japan as pathogens causing similar blight symptoms in kiwifruit, P. menezesiana is a new leaf blight pathogen in kiwifruit. Development of the disease was stimulated by wounding, prevailing wind, and drought. The causal fungus was proven to be overwintered in the diseased leaves on the ground surface.
The efficacy of fungicides was compared for control of root rot as well as leaf blight caused by Phytophthora cactorum on ginseng plants. Growth of P. cactorum in rlitro was completely or highly inhibited by metalaxyl, tetracyclin, captafol, carbendazim, and thiophanate + thiram. In field trials, the disease was significantly reduced not only in the root rot but also in the leaf blight when metalaxyl was applied at 4.17 mg a.i. per plant for soil drenching and 1.25 mg a.i. for foliage application. Also captafol was effective on control of the leaf blight but its effect was inferior to that of metalaxyl. Metalaxyl lost its effectiveness in vivo between the 5th and 7th week after soil wren ching. Phytotoxicity was, however, observed on 2 years old ginseng plants when metalaxyl was drenched at 8 mg a.i. while no phytotoxic symptom was developed on 2 years old ginseng plants at 4k mg a.i. and 3 years old at 16 mg a.i. per plant, respectively.

Leaf blight of kudzu was found in Jeonbuk province in 2002. Water-soaked lesion appeared on leaves, and young stems and gray green blight sypmtom expanded from margin to main vine of leaves. As the disease became severe, blighted leaves and shoots turned dark brown and then collapsed. The causal pathgen showed initially white aerial mycelium and turned brown to gray. Mycelia were branched at 90o angles and multinucleate in one cell. It formed sclerotia on PDA. Slerotia were irregular, globose and 0.5~3.0 mm in diameter. The causal fungus of leaf blight was identified as Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn based on the cultural and morphological characteristics. This is the first report on leaf blight of kudzu caused by R. solani in Korea.
Dithiocarbamate fungicides such as maneb and mancozeb are widely used nonsystemic protectant fungicides to control various plant fungal diseases. Dithiocarbamate fungicides should be frequently applied to achieve optimal efficacy of disease control and avoid either decline in effectiveness or wash-off from leaf surface. Dithiocarbamates are of low resistance risk but have the potential to cause human neurological diseases. The objective of this study was to develop a strategy to effectively control plant disease with reduced use of dithiocarbamtes. Southern corn leaf blight was the model pathosystem for the investigation. When corn plants were drench-treated with Bacillus cereus C1L, a rhizobacterium able to induce systemic resistance in corn plants against southern leaf blight, frequency of spraying dithiocarbamate fungicides could be decreased. The treatment of B. cereus C1L was able to protect maize from southern leaf blight while residues of dithiocarbamates on leaf surface were too low to provide sufficient protection. On the other hand, frequent sprays of mancozeb slightly but significantly reduced growth of corn plants under natural conditions. In contrast, application of B. cereus C1L can significantly promote growth of corn plants whether sprayed with mancozeb or not. Our results provide the information that plant disease can be well controlled by rhizobacteria-mediated induced systemic resistance in combination with reduced but appropriate application of dithiocarbamate fungicides just before a heavy infection period. An appropriate use of rhizobacteria can enhance plant growth and help plants overcome negative effects caused by dithiocarbamates.
Nine samples of soft rotten roots and blighted leaves of Ficus spp. plants were collected from the vinyl-houses in Taejeon, Seongnam, Suweon and Yangjae in 1988 and pathogenic bactea were isolated from them Results of the studies on morphological, cultural, physiologucal and pathological characteristics indicated that the bacteria from Ficus retusa were Pseudomonas cichorii, from Ficus retusa \`Golden leaf\` and Ficus benjamina were P.viridiflava. These are the first description of bacteria which caused the diseases on Ficus spp. in Korea. We proposed to name the disease of Ficus retusa by P. cichorii as \"bacterial root rot of Ficus retusa\" and Ficus retusa(Golden leaf) and Ficus benjamina by P. viridiflava as \"bacterial leaf blight of Ficus retusa (Golden leaf)\", \"bacterial blight of Ficus benjamina\", respectively.
More than 100 isolates of Stemphylium obtained form leaf blight lesions of garlic (Allium sativum), onion (A. cepa) and leek (A. fistulosum) were identified as Stemphylium vesicarium (Wallr.) Simm. based on various morphological characteristics rather than S. botryosum Wallr. previously reported on those plants in Korea. In controlled inoculations, the pathogen induced the disease symptoms on leaves of garlic 7 days after inoculation. Onion and leek were also artificially infected by the fungus. This is the first report of S. vesicarium causing a leaf blight of garlic, onion and leek in Korea.
We investigated the first symptom emerging date of rice bacterial leaf blight disease during four years from 2002 to 2005. The disease occurrence date was earlier 20$\sim$30 days in 2005 than that of 2002. The damage in different rice growth stage by the bacterial disease on rice yield and grain quality in southern part of Korea was examined. The disease decreased rice yield following by increased infection rates. Slight loss in rice yield and brown head rice rate were observed at below 10% level of infected leaf area, while over 25% infected leaf area caused the significant decrease in rice yield and brown head rice rate. More than 50% of the infected leaf area rate caused 29% yield reduction in case of infection at panicle formation stage and 18% of brown head rice rate. Cooked rice quality was also affected in the diseased rice by damage in palatability score and viscosity.
Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria and endophytic bacteria were isolated from different varieties of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) from South India. Totally 50 strains representing, 30 PGPR and 20 endophytic bacteria were identified based on biochemical assays and 16S rDNA sequence analysis. The isolates were screened for antagonistic activity against Pythium aphanidermatum (Edson) Fitzp., and Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn., causing rhizome rot and leaf blight diseases in turmeric, by dual culture and liquid culture assays. Results revealed that only five isolates of PGPR and four endophytic bacteria showed more than 70% suppression of test pathogens in both assays. The SEM studies of interaction zone showed significant ultrastructural changes of the hyphae like shriveling, breakage and desication of the pathogens by PGPR B. cereus (RBacDOB-S24) and endophyte P. aeruginosa (BacDOB-E19). Selected isolates showed multiple Plant growth promoting traits. The rhizome bacterization followed by soil application of B. cereus (RBacDOB-S24) showed lowest Percent Disease Incidence (PDI) of rhizome rot and leaf blight, 16.4% and 15.5% respectively. Similarly, P. aeruginosa (BacDOB-E19) recorded PDI of rhizome rot (17.5%) and leaf blight (17.7%). The treatment of these promising isolates exhibited significant increase in plant height and fresh rhizome yield/plant in comparison with untreated control under greenhouse condition. Thereby, these isolates can be exploited as a potential biocontrol agent for suppressing rhizome rot and leaf blight diseases in turmeric.

Crinum asiaticum and Hymenocallis littoralis, commonly known as spider lilies are bulbous perennial and herbaceous plants that widely planted in Malaysia as ornamental. During 2015-2016, symptom of leaf blight was noticed on the hosts from several locations in Penang. The symptom appeared as irregular brown to reddish lesions surrounded by yellow halos. As the disease progressed, the infected leaves became blighted, dried, and fell off with the presence of black microsclerotia and pycnidia on the lesions parts. The present study was conducted to investigate the causal pathogen of leaf blight on C. asiaticum and H. littoralis. Based on morphological characteristics and DNA sequences of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF1-α) gene, the causal pathogen was identified as Macrophomina phaseolina. Phylogenetic analysis of combined dataset of ITS and TEF1-α grouped the isolates studied with other isolates of M. phaseolina from GenBank. The grouping of the isolates was supported by 96% bootstrap value. Pathogenicity test proved the role of the fungus in causing leaf blight on both hosts.
