  • The lead has to be removed for the recycling of copper alloy. The lead cannot be removed from the copper alloy by oxidation. It can be removed by the evaporation because of its high vapor pressure. However, rare information is found on removal of lead from copper alloy. The purpose of present work is to provide a fundamental knowledges on the removal of lead from the copper alloy by evaporation. Gas injection was made in molten copper alloy, and the evaporation rate of lead was measured. The influence of Ar gas flow rata(2~4 L/min), initial contents of lead(2~4wt%Pb), temperature(1200~140$0^{\circ}C$) was investigated based on the thermodynamic and the kinetics. The rate constant is increased with increasing flow rate of Ar and temperature. Though amount of lead removed is increased with higher initial lead concentration, the rate constant is not changed significantly. The activation energy is estimated from the temperature dependence of the rate constant. Also removal of lead from the copper by adding chloride was made for the comparison.

  • For the purpose of evaluating metal content in human hair, the auther carried out the comparative study of 55 samples of exposed residents surrounding lead & copper smelter and 55 samples of non-exposed. Hair samples were stingently washed before analysis for lead and copper by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The results obtained were as follows 1. Hair samples of exposed residents contained more lead than non-exposed but showed no significance statistically (P>0.05). 2. Also copper in the hair of exposed residents showed more content than non-exposed but no significance statistically (P>0.05). 3. Lead and copper in the hair of exposed residents revealed a high degree of correlation (r = 0.8442, p<0.005). 4. Lead did not accumulate in hair with age in two group residents and copper in the hair of non-exposed residents maintained in all age. 5. The content of lead and copper in the hair of two group residents showed very considerable variation from individual to individual.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of heavy metals (copper, cadmium, lead and chrome) on the growth of plant and seed germination of Arabidopsis thaliana treated with various concentrations of heavy metals. Cadmium and chrome among the 4 heavy metals had no effect on the growth of stem even in the concentration fifty times higher than the official standard concentration of pollutant exhaust notified by the Ministry of Environment. The official standard concentration of cadmium, however, stimulated the growth of stem in general, increasing leaf size and surface area, although it had no effect on the length of stem. But the growth of stem was decreased about 18% in the official standard concentration of pollutant exhaust of lead and copper. There was no growth of root in the concentration of lead and copper ten times higher than the official standard concentration. Cadmium and chrome had no effect on the seed germination, but lead and copper decreased the rate of seed germination. Seeds were not germinated in the concentration of copper ten times higher than the official standard concentration and in the concentration of lead fifty times higher than the official standard concentration. From this research three peculiar results were obtained. Chrome in the soil did not have much effect on the plant growth and seed germination of Arabidopsis thaliana. Cadmium stimulated the stem growth in an optimum concentration. But lead and copper reduced the plant growth and seed germination even in a small concentration, especially copper had the worse effect.

  • Soils collected from an agricultural field in Youngdong, Chungbuk province were intentionally: contaminated with lead and copper. The efficiencies of soil washing with HCl, SDS and Tween 80 were investigated through the column mode experiments. Washing with 0.1 N HCl obtained the best result for lead and copper removal (95.04 %, 95.94 %). In case of SDS, lead and copper removal rate was such poor as 7.1 % and copper was 24.04 %, respectively. Meanwhile, washing of contaminated soil with Tween 80, did not show any significant removal effect. It was found that the washing efficiency was dependent on pH of washing agent.

  • The protective effects of high levels of dietary iron, copper, zinc or protein on lead toxicity were studied In chicks. Growth retardation, reduction of feed intake, anemia and accumulation of lead in the bone and kidney were observed in chicks fed a diet containing 500mg lead as chloride per kg of feed for 42 days. Early changes due to ingested lead were inhibition of red blood cell ${\delta}$-aminolevulinic acid dehydrase at all doses and no effect of iron, copper, zinc or protein addition were observed. Tibia lead accumulation was reduced in chicks receiving additional dietary iron or zinc compared to the lead only group but increased in chicks given supplementary protein. Decreased body weight gain was overcome by supplementary zinc or protein in chicks fed lead but not by supplementary iron. Overall the results of this study show that lead poisoning can be partly reduced by providing supplementary iron, zinc or protein, but the interaction of these element remained to be elucidated.

  • This study shows the comparison of chemical compositions of main component with other bronze bells after the research on the component analysis by non-destructive XRF analysis. There are shrinkage cavities caused by the shrinkage defect and pores with pollutants on Bronze Bell of Heungguksa Temple with gamma radiation images and 77.3% of copper, 8.4% of tin and 10.9% of lead were determined as the main components of it with XRF analysis The tin content of Brozen Bell of Heungguksa Temple is less than those (11~18%) of other bronze bells but the lead content of that is higher. The lead content of it shows 10.91% which is quite high while generally the lead contents of other bells were controlled lower than 2.1%. Buddhist bells have the different lead content according to the period. The lead content was low until Silla Dynasty and Unified Silla period but it has been getting higher since some point of Koryo Dynasty. It is assumed that expensive copper and tin were replaced with lead.

  • To examine the potency of biosorbent, the adsorption capacity of Pseudomonas cepacia H42 isolated from fresh water plant root was compared with Saccharomyces cerevisiae SEY2102 on bases of biomass, concentration of heavy metal, presence of light metals, immobilized cell, and ion exchange resin. P. cepacia H42 biomass of 0.05-0.5 g/L increased adsorption and above 1.0 g/L of yeast biomass was the most effective in adsorption. By applying the same amount of biomass, lead showed the highest adsorption on two strains and the adsorption strength was lead>copper>cadmium on both strains. The high heavy metal concentration induced the high adsorption capacity. P. cepacia H42 adsorption was in the order of copper>lead>cadmium and lead>copper>cadmium by yeast in 10 mg/L. Both strain showed same adsorption strength in the order of lead>copper>cadmium in 100 mg/L and 1000 mg/L. The adsorption capacity of both yeast and P. cepacia H42 was decreased in the presence of light metals and the order of cadmium>copper>lead. $Mg^{2+}$ induced the least adsorption while $Na^+$ induced highest adsorption. The adsorption capacity of immobilized yeast and P. cepacia H42 was detected between 200-400 mL in flow volume and decreased in the presence of light metals. Ion exchange containing light metals caused 30-50% adsorption reduction on both strains.

  • In a stream of water sample, trace metal ions are quantitatively coprecipitated with Indium hydroxide and filtered. The filtered precipitate is continuously dissolved in 3 M nitric acid and introduced to ICP directly. The lead, cadmium, and copper are concentrated more than 10-fold and determined with ICP-AES at a sampling frequency of 10/hour. The detection limits are 2.89, 1.43,0.52 ppb for lead, cadmium, and copper respectively. Recoveries of lead, cadmium, and copper are 98.7, 94.3, and 104.5% respectively. The RSD values for three elements are about 3-5% currently.

  • The passivity behavior of copper anode containing impurities in copper sulfate solution for electrorefining process was studied at several different levels of impurities such as As, Sb, Bi and Pb. The passivity behavior was investigated by electrochemical techniques (galvanostatic, potentiodynamic and cyclic voltammetry tests) and surface analysis (optical microscopy, electron probe microanalysis, scanning electron microscopy). The results were that arsenic, antimony inhibited passivation and bismuth accelerated it and lead containing anode showed different passivity behavior from above anodes. The improved passivity characteristics could be explained by decrease in oxygen content in passivity film which resulted from a reaction among the impurities, oxygen and copper in the anode. The SEM image revealed that arsenic or antimony containing anode exhibited a porous passivity film and bismuth containing anode showed the compact passivity film and lead containing anode had loose passivity film on anode.

  • Waste paper cup was sulfonated to be used as ion exchanger. Removal characteristic of copper and lead ion by prepared ion exchanger was investigated. The sulfonation was conformed by the high intensity band of $SO_3H$ group around 1100~$1160cm^{-1}$. The synthesized ion exchanger had greater removal ability for copper and lead ion than the original waste paper cup. Ion exchange system reached the final equilibrium plateau within 30min. The maximum removal capacities $q_{max}$ were calculated as 9.79mg/g fur copper and 15.95mg/g for lead, respectively. The affinity of lead based on a weight was higher than that of copper. The ion exchange phenomena appeared to follow a typical Freundlich isotherm.
