  • Porous nano crystalline $TiO_2$ is currently used as a working electrode in a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). The conventional working electrode is comprised of absorption layer (particle size:~20 nm) and scattering layer (particle size:~300 nm). We inserted window layer with 10 nm particle size in order to increase transmittance and specific surface area of $TiO_2$. The electrochemical impedance spectroscope analysis was conducted to analysis characterization of the electronic behavior. The Bode phase plot and Nyquist plot were interpreted to confirm the internal resistance caused by the insertion of window layer and carrier lifetime. The photocurrent that occurred in working electrode, which is caused by rise in specific surface area, increased. Accordingly, it was found that insertion of window layer in the working electrode lead to not only effectively transmitting the light, but also increasing of specific surface area. Therefore, it was concluded that insertion of window layer contributes to high conversion efficiency of DSSCs.

  • The analysis of danchung pigments at the Geunjeongjeon Hall in the Gyeongbokgung Palace were carried out by EXRF and MXRD. The analytical results showed that mineral pigments were employed for the inside of the Geunjeongjeon Hall. The main ingredients of green pigments were chalcanthite and celadonite. Red pigment was cinnnabar. It was also revealed that synthetic pigments were applied for the outside of the Hall. Yellow pigment was chrome yellow. The main ingredients of red pigments were red lead and hematite. Green pigments were emeral green and chrome green. Lazurite was employed for blue pigment and titanium dioxide for white one.

  • We measured the reductions in size and solubility of mackerel muscle that was freeze-dried, deoiled by supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-$CO_2$), or roasted. The percent size reduction and solubility were high in SC-$CO_2$-treated muscle compared with freeze-dried and roasted muscle. We used oil-free residues to test for heavy metals and determine microbial safety. The SC-$CO_2$, hexane, and ethanol were used to separate oil from muscle. The concentrations of cadmium (Cd) in all treated muscles were less than the values reported in the literature, as were the concentrations of lead in SC-$CO_2$- and hexane- treated muscle. In contrast, concentrations of arsenic and mercury in muscles were greater than the reported values regardless of treatment. Zinc and iron, which are beneficial for health, were found in high levels after all treatments of muscle tissue. After 6 months of storage at different temperatures, SC-$CO_2$-and ethanol-treated muscle showed few bacterial colonies, and none were found after 4 months of storage at $-20^{\circ}C$. These results will be useful to food-processing industries for maintaining high-quality, safe mackerel muscle.

  • The flue gas desulfurization (FGD) process is currently the most effective process utilized to remove sulfur dioxide from stack gases of coal-fired plants. However, FGD systems use a lot of limestone as desulfurizing agent. In this study, we use limestone sludge, which is a by-product of the steel industry, to replace the desulfurizing agent of the FGD system. The limestone particle size is found to be unrelated to the desulfurizing rate; the gypsum purity, however, is related. Limestone sludge mixes with limestone slurry delivered at a constant rate in a desulfurizing agent with organic acid are expected to lead to a high desulfurization efficiency and high quality by-product (gypsum).

  • Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) is one of the most attractive perovskite-type materials for ferroelectric random access memory (FRAM) due to its higher remanant polarization and the ability to withstand higher coercive fields. We first applied the damascene process using chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) to fabricate the PZT thin film capacitor to solve the problems of plasma etching including low etching profile and ion charging. The $0.8{\times}0.8\;{\mu}m$ square patterns of silicon dioxide on Pt/Ti/$SiO_2$/Si substrate were coated by sol-gel method with the precursor solution of PZT. Damascene process by CMP was performed to pattern the PZT thin film with the vertical sidewall and no plasma damage. The polarization-voltage (P-V) characteristics of PZT capacitors and the current-voltage characteristics (I-V) were examined by change of process parameters. To examine the CMP induced damage to PZT capacitor, the domain structure of the polished PZT thin film was also investigated by piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM).

  • The explosive wireless data service requirement accompanied with carbon dioxide emission and consumption of traditional energy has put pressure on both industria and academia. Wireless networks powered with the uneven and intermittent generated renewable energy have been widely researched and lead to a new research paradigm called green communication. In this paper, we comprehensively consider the total generated renewable energy, QoS requirement and channel quality, then propose a utility based renewable energy allocation policy. The utility here means the satisfaction degree of users with a certain amount allocated renewable energy. The energy allocation problem is formulated as a constraint optimization problem and a heuristic algorithm with low complexity is derived to solve the raised problem. Numerical results show that the renewable energy allocation policy is applicable not only to soft QoS, but also to hard QoS and best effort QoS. When the renewable energy is very scarce, only users with good channel quality can achieve allocated energy.

  • In this study, Techno-economic evaluation model for carbon capture & sequestration (CCS) technologies are reviewed. Based on a key parameters of Korea's electricity market, performance data of 10 MW-scale post-combustion $CO_2$ capture pilot plant in Boryong station, the cost of $CO_2$ avoided was evaluated followed by international guideline suggested by IEA CCS costing methods task force. The result showed that Korea's Electricity cost including CAPEX & OPEX of reference power plant is relatively low compared to OECD nations which lead to a lower CCS cost ($33USD\;t/CO_2$). And future work using newly evaluated CAPEX & OPEX data of power plant with/without CCS is recommended.

  • All countries, including Korea, are currently experiencing the effect of rapid climate change. As a result, the cultivation area of many crops including wheat is changing, or productivity is falling sharply. If enough nitrogen is present in the soil, the increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide due to the greenhouse effect can lead to increased photosynthesis of plants, resulting in increased productivity. By contrast, a low proportion of nitrogen in soil does not increase production, often leading to the use of nitrogen fertilizers to increase crop productivity: this causes serious environmental pollution due to the leakage of nitrogen fertilizers used by crops. Increasing the understanding of the molecular level of the plant nitrogen use efficiency mechanism may contribute to increased productivity of crops and reduced of environmental pollution by nitrogen. In Korea, cultivars have developed 35 kinds of wheat, such as 'keumgang' and 'Chokyeong', which can be used for specific purposes such as baking or noodles. In this study we investigate 'keumgang' and 'Chokyeong' in order to elucidate the mechanism of nitrogen use ability of wheat and contribute to the reduction of environmental pollution by providing guidelines for the proper use of nitrogenous fertilizer.

  • Among the currently available types of fuel, LNG emits a relatively small amount of nitrogen oxide and carbon dioxide when it burns in the engine. However, since LNG is a flammable material, leakage during bunkering can lead to accidents, such as fires. Therefore, it is necessary to install a remote operation emergency shut-down (ESD) valve to block the flow and leakage of LNG in an emergency situation that occurs during bunkering. The ESD valve uses a hydraulic driving device consisting of a hydraulic control valve and a hydraulic motor to control globe valve disc displacement, which regulates the flow path for LNG transfer. At this time, there are various nonlinearities in hydraulic driving devices; hence, it is necessary to design a controller with robust control performance against these uncertainties. In this study, modeling of the ESD valve was carried out, and a sliding mode controller to control the displacement of the globe valve disc was designed. As a result, it was confirmed that the designed control performance could be achieved by overcoming nonlinearity characteristics using the designed controller.
