  • Laboratory-scale landfills (simulated landfills) were designed to determine the formaldehyde released into air and leachate from medium density fiberboard (MDF). Simulated landfills were constructed using cylindrical plastic containers containing alternating layers of soil and MDF for a total of five layers. The highest concentration of formaldehyde was found in the air and leachate from the MDF only treatment compared to treatments containing MDF and soil. At the end of the study (28 days), formaldehyde concentrations in air and leachate from treatments containing MDF and soil decreased by 70 percent and 99 percent, respectively, while the treatment containing MDF only still released formaldehyde into the air and leachate. Therefore, waste MDF after storing 4 weeks in water may be recycled as compost or mulch based on formaldehyde leaching. Also, these data indicate soil restricts formaldehyde release into air and leachate and provides new information about the fate of wood-based composite waste containing UF resin disposed in landfills.

  • The removal efficiencies and a total oxygen transfer coefficient for food waste leachate(FWL) were estimated by using Jet Loop Reactor(JLR). Pure oxygen was used instead of air to improve oxygen concentration in the JLR for high total chemical oxygen demamd(TCOD) in FWL. In JLB, in order to examining the oxygen transfer characteristic, the circulation flowrate and oxygen flowrate were controlled with 7~10 L/min(1.5 L/min interval) and 0.2~0.5 L/min (0.1 L/min interval) and we experimented according to the each condition. As a result, Oxygen uptake rate(OUR) and oxygen transfer rate could be maximized than the oxygen flowrate to increase the circulation flowrate. In addition, it determined that JLR using the pure oxygen which can obtain the greatest oxygen transfer rate as it was the high-concentration organic wastewater like the food waste leachate through the continuous experiment was appropriate.

  • The purpose of this research was to examine the possibility on the recycling of foodwaste leachate as external carbon sources using microbubble. The following operating conditions were selected: pressurizing tank 3 bar, circulation flow rate 3.65 LPM, and air flow rate 0.3 LPM with batch type. Microbubble contact time of 18 hours is optimal time to satisfy the recycling of foodwaste leachate as external carbon sources with batch type. HRT 18 hours came up to standard for external carbon sources, except for T-P concentration with continuous type. Coagulants need to be used for removal of dissolved phosphorus concentration by more than 88.5% of the total phosphorus concentration. The VFA was influenced by the organic decomposition rate and the concentration in the aerobic condition. It was considered that the VFA was needed for selection the optimal HRT or the addition of acid fermentation process in order to meet recycling standard of foodwaste leachate.

  • This study is concerned with the treatment of landfill leachate by carrier meditated emulsion. Using the batch operation, the optimum conditions for the removal of anionic and cationic materials were obtained. The landfill leachate from the plant was experimented under these conditions. The experimental variables were surfactant (Arlacel80) concentration and carrier(Aiquat336, DEHPA) concentration in membrane phase and counter ion concentration in internal phase. More than 80%(COD) of landfill leachate component could be removed within 12 minutes. The most crucial experimental variable for the removal efficiency was carrier concentration in membrane phase. In the other variables, the reaction time was more effected than the removal efficiency.

  • Analysis of hydrological safety as well as the determination of many substance concentrations are necessary when bioreactor systems are introduced to landfill operations. Therefore, hydrological and substance balance model was developed since it can be applied to various bioreactor landfill operation systems. For the final evaluation of the model's effectiveness, four different methods of injections (leachate alone, leachate and organic waste water, leachate and reverse osmosis concentrate, and all the above three combination) was applied to 1st landfill site of Sudokwon landfill. As a result, the water content of the hypothetical cases for four different systematic bioreactors is projected to be increased up to 35.5% in next 10 years, and this indicated that there will be no problems in meeting the hydrological safety. Also, the final $Cl^-$ concentration after 10-yr time period was projected to be between from minimum 126 to maximum 3,238 mg/L, which could be still a decrease from the original value of 3,278 mg/L. According to the proposed model, whether the substance concentration becomes increased or decreased largely depends on the ratio of initial quantity of inner landfill leachate and the rate of injection.

  • This study, collaborated Gifu University, Japan, was performed to analyze chemical pollutants and microorganism and to clarify the distribution of sulfate-reducing bacteria and their insolubilization of heavy metal ions in leachates sampled seasonally between 1994 and 1996 from Nanjido waste landfill site, sampled 4 times between 1995 and 1996 from Pusan and Daejeon waste landfill site, and sampled 1 time between 1992 and 1994 from Hokkaido, Nagoya, Osaka and Hukuoka waste landfill site in Japan. The results were as follows: 1. The temperatures of internal leachate and leachate effluent were 40$\circ$C and 30$\circ$C, respectively, and the pH values of both leachates were about 8.0 at Nanjido waste landfill site. The concentration of SO$_4^{-2}$ gradually increased with the degree of stabilization and that of NO$_3$-N was detected in a part of sampling sites at one and half years, and in all sampling sites at 3 years after completion of landfill. 2. The organic substances in leachate of Nanjido waste landfill site decreased with the degree of stabilization and they were very fluctuated with measuring point and time. The concentration of organic substance and heavy metals in internal leachate were higher than in leachate effluent and those of Cd, Hg, and Pb were lower than detection limit except a part of samples in 1996. 3. APCs in internal leachate and leachate effluent were not much different and the minimum of APCs in internal leachate and leachate effluent were $1.0\times 10^4$/ml and $4.0\times 10^1$/ml, respectively. 4. The maximums of SRBs in Nanjido, Pusan, and Daejeon waste landfill site were 9180 MPN/ml, 24000 MPN/ml, and 348 MPN/ml, respectively and the maximum of SRBs in Japan waste landfill site was 9300 MPN/ml. 5. During 2-week-SRB culture, the values of MPN were high at 50$\circ$C for initial culture period and at 30$\circ$C for last culture period. MPN started to appear at first day and rapidly increased between 7th day and 9th day. 6. Cadmium and copper were insolubilized by SRB within 6 hr and iron and zinc were done within 48 hr. The rates of insolubilization of Cd, Cu, Fe, Zn, T-Cr were 100%, 99.5%, 95.0%, 99.8%, 16.1% after 48 hr treatment with SRB, respectively.

  • The composition of leachates varies depending on the waste characteristics, landfill age and landfilling method. Generally, leachates contain high dissolved organic substance and ammonia nitrogen whereas phosphorus concentration was very low. Leachate A produced from young landfill is characterized by high BOD5/COD ratio (0.8) whereas leachate C produced from old landfill has lower BOD5/COD ratio (0.1). Maximum biochemical methane potential of leachate A, B (from medium landfill) and C were 271,106 and 4 ml CH4/g-COD, respectively. On the other hand, the maximum biodegradability of leachate A, B, and C were 75,30, and 1%, respectively. These results indicated that anaerobic treatment of leachate from young landfill was effective in removing organic pollutants. In case of leachate C, carbon might reside in the form of large molecular weight organic compounds such as lignins, humic acids and other polymerized compounds of soils, which are resistant to biodegradation. The lag-phase period increased with the increasing organic concentration in leachate. In case of leachate A of concentration greater than 25%, the lag-phase period increased sharply. This implied that the start-up period of anaerobic process using an unacclimated inoculum could be extended due to the higher concentration of leachate. This relatively long lag-phase is probably related to the fact that most of the inhibitory compounds have been diluted beyond their inhibitory concentrations of less than 50%. Furthermore, the ultimate methane yield and methane production rate decreased as leachate concentration increased. It was anticipated the potential inhibition was related with the steady-state inhibition as well as the initial shock load.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the leaching characteristics by the landfill of solidified sludge. pH of leachate was 3.7 - 5.8 and 8.0 - 10.4 in each column using sand as a top-soil layer on filled municipal waste and solidified cake. $NH_3$-N in leachate was increasing in the each column using sand as a top-soil layer on filled dewatered sludge and solidified cake, but decreasing in the each column using sand and solidified cake by top-soil layer on filled municipal waste. Also the concentration of $NO_3$-N was on the way of stabilizing but was difficult to find any tendency until now. Zn and Mn in leachates were the highest in the column filled with the solidified sludge, Cr, Pb and Cd were low concentration at each column.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of compost leachate and concentrated slurry on growth of tomato in hydroponic culture. In process of composting, compost leachate was produced water was through a saturated compost heap. The concentrated slurry was produced by filtration and concentration by membrane process. Filtration of pig slurry was necessary to prevent the hose clogging in hydroponics culture. The treatments of this experiment were consisted of seven different liquid fertilizers; compost leachate(CL), concentrated pig slurry (CS), compost leachate+byproduct(CL+BP), concentrated pig slurry+byproduct(CS+BP), compost leachate 50%+nutrient solution50%(CL+NS), concentrated pig slurry 50%+nutrient solution50%(CS+NS) and nutrient solution(NS) for tomato based on nitrogen content. The chemical nutrient solution was the solution of National Horticulture Research Station for the growth of tomato. The concentration of nutrient solution was adjusted a range of $1.6{\sim}2.0 mS/cm$ in EC. 1. The compost leachate and concentrated pig slurry were low in phosphorus(P), calcium(Ca), magnesium(Mg), but rich in potassium(K). 2. Plant height, SPAD value of tomato was highest in the plot of CS+NS, intermediate in CL, CS+BP, and lowest in 100% concentrated pig slurry. 3. The tomato yield of compost leachate plot was 91% compared with inorganic nutrient solution. The compost leachate solution could be used as a nutrition solution of tomato in organic hydroponics. 4. The growth including plant height, SPAD value, fruit number, fruit weight and yield of tomato in the CL 50%+NS 50% was similar in the control. In conclusion, the mixture solution of 50% pig slurry and 50% nutrient solution could be used as a nutrition solution of tomato hydroponic culture.
