For the calculation of foundation settlement it is recommended to take into account so called influence zone inside the subsoil bellow the foundation structure. Influence zone inside the subsoil is the region where the load has a substantial influence on the deformation of the soil skeleton. The soil skeleton is pre-consolidated or over consolidated due to the original geostatic stress state. An excavation changes the original geostatic stress state and it creates the space for the load transferred from upper structure. The theory of elastic layer in Westergard manner is selected for the vertical stress calculation. The depth of influence zone is calculated from the equality of the original geostatic stress and the new geostatic stress due to excavation combined with the vertical stress from the upper structure. Two close formulas are presented for the influence zone calculation. Using ADINA code we carried out several numerical examples to verify the proposed analytical formulas and to enhance their use in civil engineering practice. Otherwise, the FEM code accuracy can be control.

Concrete infill and reinforcement are one of the most well-known strengthening methods of structural elements. This study investigated flexural performance of concrete infill composite PHC pile (ICP pile) reinforced by infill concrete and longitudinal rebars in hollow PHC pile. A total four series of pile specimens were tested by four points bending method under simply supported conditions and investigated bending moment experimentally and analytically. From the test results, it was found that although reinforcement of infilled concrete on the pure bending moment of PHC pile was negligible, reinforcement of PHC pile using infilled concrete and longitudinal rebars increase the maximum bending moment with range from 1.95 to 2.31 times than that of conventional PHC pile. The error of bending moment between experimental results and predicted results by nonlinear sectional analysis on the basis of the conventional layered sectional approach was in the range of -2.54 % to 2.80 %. The axial compression and moment interaction analysis for ICP piles shows more significant strengthening effects of infilled concrete and longitudinal rebars.

Circular Distributed-feedback (DFB) guiding structures can be incorporated in most of the semiconductor laser devices because of the frequency-selective property applicable as an optical filter in optical communications. In this paper, we present a novel and simple modal transmission-line theory (MTLT) using Floquet-Babinet's principle to analyze the optical filtering characteristics of Bragg gratings with cylindrical profile. The numerical results reveal that this method offers a simple and convenient algorithm to analyze the filtering characteristics of circular DFB configurations as well as is extended conveniently to evaluate the guiding problems of circular multi-layered periodic structures.
PURPOSES : This paper presents a comparison study between dynamic and static analyses of falling weight deflectometer (FWD) testing, which is a test used for evaluating layered material stiffness. METHODS: In this study, a forward model, based on nonlinear subgrade models, was developed via finite element analysis using ABAQUS. The subgrade material coefficients from granular and fine-grained soils were used to represent strong and weak subgrade stiffnesses, respectively. Furthermore, the nonlinearity in the analysis of multi-load FWD deflection measured from intact PCC slab was investigated using the deflection data obtained in this study. This pavement has a 14-inch-thick PCC slab over fine-grained soil. RESULTS: From case studies related to the nonlinearity of FWD analysis measured from intact PCC slab, a nonlinear subgrade model-based comparison study between the static and dynamic analyses of nondestructive FWD tests was shown to be effectively performed; this was achieved by investigating the primary difference in pavement responses between the static and dynamic analyses as based on the nonlinearity of soil model as well as the multi-load FWD deflection. CONCLUSIONS : In conclusion, a comparison between dynamic and static FEM analyses was conducted, as based on the FEM analysis performed on various pavement structures, in order to investigate the significance of the differences in pavement responses between the static and dynamic analyses.
The effect of sulfate substitution on the formation of (Pb,S)-1201 type phase was investigated. Polycrystalline samples with nominal compositions of $(Pb_{0.5}B_{0.5-x}S_x)(Sr_{2-y}La_y)CuO_z$, (x = 0 - 0.5, y = 0.7 - 1.0) and $(Pb_{0.5}S_{0.5})(Sr_{2-y}La_y)CuO_z$ (y = 0.5 - 1.0) were prepared by using a solid-state reaction method. The samples were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and resistivity measurements. XRD data revealed that almost-single (Pb,S)-1201 phase samples could be obtained for x = 0.5 and y = 0.9-1.0, judging from the similar results of the XRD patterns between the (Pb,S)-1201 and (Pb,B)-1201 phases. Each of the samples has a crystal structure with tetragonal symmetry. The sample with x = 0.5 and y = 0.9 is found to show an onset of resistivity dropping at over 23 K and zero resistivity at 12 K.
The static analysis of structures with arbitrary cross-section geometry and material lamination via a refined one-dimensional (1D) approach is presented in this paper. Higher-order 1D models with a variable order of expansion for the displacement field are developed on the basis of Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF). Classical Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam theories are obtained as particular cases of the first-order model. Numerical results of displacement, strain and stress are provided by using the finite element method (FEM) along the longitudinal direction for different configurations in excellent agreement with three-dimensional (3D) finite element solutions. In particular, a layered thin-walled cylinder is considered as first assessment with a laminated conventional cross-section. An atherosclerotic plaque is introduced as a typical structure with arbitrary cross-section geometry and studied for both the homogeneous and nonhomogeneous material cases through the 1D variable kinematic models. The analyses highlight limitations of classical beam theories and the importance of higher-order terms in accurately detecting in-plane cross-section deformation without introducing additional numerical problems. Comparisons with 3D finite element solutions prove that 1D CUF provides remarkable three-dimensional accuracy in the analysis of even short and nonhomogeneous structures with arbitrary geometry through a significant reduction in computational cost.

Applying diffraction of waves and muffler principle, the theory of macroscopic air ventilation with soundproofing was explained. Soundproofing frequency range can be selected by this method. The sound wave was attenuated at the resonator located between double-layered walls. A soundproof plate was designed and the experiment was processed. There are two air holes of diameter of 5cm and thickness of 8cm on the surfaces per each soundproofing cell. There was a transmission loss of about 25dB and it is more than at least 10dB compared with that of the Comnex technology of wave cancellation by air holes in Japan. Furthermore, there was no soundproof frequency selection in the Comnex technology.
In this study, structural design and analysis of the automobile bonnet is performed. The flax/vinly ester composite material is applied for structural design. The Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding-Light (VARTML) manufacturing method is adopted for manufacturing the flax fiber composite bonnet. The VARTML is a manufacturing process that the resin is injected into the fly layered-up fibers enclosed by a rigid mold tool under vacuum. A series of flax/vinyl ester composite panels are manufactured, and several kinds of specimens cut out from the panels are tested to obtain mechanical performance data. Based on this, structural design of the automobile bonnet is performed.
Using three consecutive years' harvested rices and their starches isolated from rice flours by alkaline method, it was found that no significant aging effect on rice flour and starch was observed based on following results. Proximate data of flours or starches showed in similarity, except high level of crude fat in rice flour and rice starch harvested in 2002. In SEM, the surface of aged rice flour had slightly layered shape due to possible abrasion during storage, and that of aged starch showed more smooth and less rigid polygonal shape. X-ray diffraction patterns of flours and starches were all A type, and crystallinity of rice starch harvested in 2000 had the smallest. From tristimulus colorimetry (Hunterlab Color), total color difference ($\Delta$E) calculated from L, a, and b gave less color difference with the darkest in 2002 harvested one among flours and the lightest in 2001 one among starches. WBCs of both 2002 rice flour and starch were the lowest among samples studied. At 80$^{\circ}C$, swelling power and solubility of rice starches harvested in 2000, 2001 and 2002 were 14.35, 9.75; 14.04, 9.6; and 12.49, 8.82, respectively. The highest peak viscosities measured by RVA were shown both in 2001 rice flour and in its starch. Starch and milled rice flour harvested in 2000 had higher hydrolytic $\alpha$-amylase, compared to other flour and starch samples.
The polysulfone(PSf)/polyethersulfone(PES) blend membranes were prepared by an immersion precipitation method. N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone(NMP) was used as a solvent and water as a nonsolvent. The composition of the coagulation bath and the dope polymer concentration as well as the blend ratio of two polymers were varied. The membrane morphologies were interpreted on the basis of the phase diagram of the PSf/PES/NMP/water system. As the solvent content in the coagulation bath increased in the single polymer system, the number of macrovoids decreased and the morphology was changed from finger-like to cellular structure. In the given bath condition phase separation occurs earlier for the solutions of PSf/PES blend than for those of single polymer. A horizontally layered structure and horizontal protuberances inside the macrovoid were observed for the membranes formed from PSf/PES blend solutions. This peculiar structure formation can be interpreted by a PSf-rich/PES-rich phase separation followed by a polymer-rich/polymer-lean phase separation during the exchange of solvent and nonsolvent.
