Resin transfer molding (RTM) is one of the most popular processes for producing fiber reinforced polymer composites. In the manufacture of complex thick composite structures, analysis on flow front advancement on the resin impregnating the multi-layered fiber preform is helpful for the optimization of the process. In this study, three-dimensional mold filling simulation of RTM is carried out by using CVFEM (Control Volume Finite Element Method). On the assumption of isothermal flow of Newtonian fluid, Darcy’s law and continuity equation are used as governing equations. Different permeability tensors employed in each layer are obtained by experiments. Numerically predicted flow front is compared with experimental one in order to validate the numerical results. Flow simulations are conducted in the two mold geometries, rectangular plate and hollow cylinder. Permeability tensor of each layer preform in Cartesian coordinate system is transformed to cylinder coordinates system so that the flow within the multi-layered preforms of the hollow cylinder can be calculated exactly. Our emphasis is on the three dimensional flow analysis for circular three-dimensional braided preform, which shows outstanding mechanical properties such as high impact strength and toughness compared with other conventional two-dimensional laminar-structured preforms.

Stainless steel 304 and 316 plates were deposited with the multi-layered coatings of titanium film (0.1 um) and gold film (1-2 um) by an electron beam evaporation method. The XRD patterns of the stainless steel plates modified with the multi-layered coatings showed the crystalline phases of the external gold film and the stainless steel substrate. Surface microstructural morphologies of the stainless steel bipolar plates modified with multi-layered coatings were observed by AFM and FE-SEM images. The external gold films formed on the stainless steel plates showed micro structure of grains of about 100 nm diameter. The grain size of the external surface of the stainless steel plates increased with the gold film thickness. The electrical resistance and water contact angle of the stainless steel bipolar plates covered with multi-layered coatings were examined with the thickness of the external gold film.

Three-layer porous alumina-mullite composites with a symmetric gradient porosity are prepared using a controlled freeze/gel-casting method. In this work, tertiary-butyl alcohol (TBA) and coal fly ash with an appropriate addition of $Al_2O_3$ were used as the freezing vehicle and the starting material, respectively. When sintered at $1300-1500^{\circ}C$, unidirectional macro-pore channels aligned regularly along the growth direction of solid TBA were developed. Simultaneously, the pore channels were surrounded by less porous structured walls. A high degree of solid loading resulted in low porosity and a small pore size, leading to higher compressive strength. The sintered porous layered composite exhibited improved compressive strength with a slight decrease in its porosity. After sintering at $1500^{\circ}C$, the layered composite consisting of outer layers with a 50 wt% solid loading showed the highest compressive strength ($90.8{\pm}3.7MPa$) with porosity of approximately 26.4%.
Cooling tower is analyzed as an assembly of layered nonlinear shell elements. Geometric representation of the shell is enabled through layered nonlinear shell elements to define the different layers of reinforcements and concrete by considering the material nonlinearity of each layer for the cooling tower shell. Modal analysis using Ritz vector analysis and nonlinear time history analysis by direct integration method have been carried out to study the effects of the inclination of the supporting columns of the cooling tower shell on its dynamic characteristics. The cooling tower is supported by I-type columns and ${\Lambda}$-type columns supports having the different inclination angles. Relevant comparisons of the dynamic response of the structural system at the base level (at the junction of the column and shell), throat level and at the top of the tower have been made. Dynamic response of the cooling tower is found to be significantly sensitive to the change of the inclination of the supporting columns. It is also found that the stiffness of the structure system increases with increase in inclination angle of the supporting columns, resulting in decrease of the period of the structural system. The participation of the stiffness of the tower in structural response of the cooling tower is fund to be dependent of the change in the inclination angle and even in the types of the supporting columns.
This paper is a continuation of the investigations started in the paper by Akbarov, S.D., Guliyev, H.H and Yahnioglu, N. (2016) "Natural vibration of the three-layered solid sphere with middle layer made of FGM: three-dimensional approach", Structural Engineering and Mechanics, 57(2), 239-263, to the case where the three-layered sphere is a hollow one. Three-dimensional exact field equations of elastodynamics are employed for investigation and the discrete-analytical method is employed for solution of the corresponding eigenvalue problem. The FGM is modelled as inhomogeneous for which the modulus of elasticity, Poison's ratio and density vary continuously through the inward radial direction according to power law distribution. Numerical results on the natural frequencies are presented and discussed. These results are also compared with the corresponding ones obtained in the previous paper by the authors. In particular, it is established that for certain harmonics and for roots of certain order, the values of the natural frequency obtained for the hollow sphere can be greater (or less) than those obtained for the solid sphere.
In order to predict the indoor air pollutant, the VOCs emission rate is used through small chamber in the design process. However, the small chamber method has limitations as the convective mass transfer coefficient, the most important factor when predicting VOCs contamination of indoor air, is different between the small chamber result and the measured data in the actual building. Furthermore, the existing studies which analyzed mass transfer coefficient in the small chamber were directed on the small chambers developed at the time and FLEC(Field and Laboratory Emission Cell), thus, are different from the current small chamber which has been changed with improvements. The purpose of this study is to determine the emission rate of pollutant in double-layered building materials through the CFD(Computational of Fluid Dynamics) and Numerical analysis based on the mass transfer coefficient on singled-layered building material by using the current small chamber widely used in Korea. Futhermore, this study used the new convective mass transfer coefficient($h_m'$) which indicates the existing convective mass transfer coefficient($h_m$) including VOC partition coefficient(k). Also, formaldehyde was selected as target pollutant.
The methods for determining the diffusion parameters for the diffusion of d-limonene, a major volatile compound of orange juice, through a multi-layered food packaging material and predicting its absorption into the packaging material have been investigated. The packaging material used was the 1.5-mm thick multi-layered packaging material composed of high impact polystyrene (HIPS), polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC), and low density polyethylene (LDPE). Orange juice was placed in a cell where volatiles were absorbed in the sample package and kept at $23{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ for 72 hr. The d-limonene absorbed in a 1.5-mm thick multi-layered food packaging material was analyzed by a solid phase micro-extraction (SPME). The absorption parameters for the absorption of d-limonene in the packaging material were determined and absorption of d-limonene into the packaging material was predicted using absorption storage data. The SPME desorption at $60^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr resulted in the most sensitive and reproducible results. The diffusion coefficients of d-limonene in the packaging material and the partition coefficient at $23{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ were approximately $1-2{\times}10^{12}m^2$/s and 0.03, respectively. The absorption profile no earlier than 30 hr was fit well by a model derived from the Fick's law.
The heterocoagulation of latex is a simple and useful method to fabricate various polymer nanocomposites in which a precise control of the colloid stability is essential. In this work, a multi-layered graphenes (MLGs)/poly(styrene-co-butyl acrylate) (P(S-co-BA)) nanocomposite having an excellent dispersion of MLGs was prepared via the sudden heating heterocoagulation process. The P(S-co-BA) component was obtained by emulsion polymerization. This process can effectively shorten the process and particles growth steps. The colloid stability of these dispersions was controlled by factors such as ionic charge, temperature, and reaction times. The influence of these factors on heterocoagulation was evaluated and the properties of the nanocomposites were investigated. The conductivity of the MLGs/P(S-co-BA) nanocomposites increased from -11.53 to -5.70 S/cm for an increase in MLG content from 0.01 to 5 wt%. Moreover, percolation threshold was observed in the case of 0.01 wt% MLGs.
Ethylammonium-layered aluminosilicates intercalates were prepared by ion exchange reaction between the layered silicates with different layer changes density of 0.32∼0.41 e per unit formula and ethylammonium chloride. A kinetic study on the thermal deintercalation of the ethylammonium-layered silicate intercalates was carried out by range of 350℃ to 480℃ (heating rate of 10℃/min). Based on the Ozawa's method, the activation energies of the thermal deintercalation reaction were estimated as 171.2∼133.0 kJ/mol, which increase linearly with the layer charge densities.

A model is constructed to evaluate the mode III stress intensity factor(SIF) for orthotropic three-layered material with a center crack subjected to uniform anti-plane shear loading. A mixed boundary value problem is formulated by Fourier integral transform method and a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind is derived. The integral equation is numerically analyzed to evaluate the effects of the ratio of shear modulus, strength of each layer and crack length to layer thickness on the stress intensity factor.
