Development of Surface Finishing Methodology for the Laminated Pattern Removal of VLM-ST Parts (VLM-ST 시작품의 적층무늬 제거를 위한 표면처리 방법론 개발)

  • A new effective thick-layered RP process, Transfer-type Variable Lamination Manufacturing using expandable polystyrene foam (VLM-ST) has been developed with thick layers and sloped surfaces. VLM-ST has the innate advantages by virtue of its working principle: high building speed, low cost for introduction and maintenance of VLM-ST apparatus, little staircase surface irregularities of parts. Despite these advantages in VLM-ST, the surface roughness of VLM-ST parts is still inadequate to be used as RP master patterns for rapid tooling (RT). This paper describes the systematic and effective methodology to remove the laminated pattern and improve the surface roughness for VLM-ST parts. From the results of surface finishing of VLM-ST parts, it can be seen that the laminated pattern is completely removed and the surface characteristics such as surface roughness, surface hardness, and paintability are improved.

  • Laser additive direct deposition of metals is a new rapid manufacturing technology, which combines with computer aided design, laser cladding and rapid prototyping. The advanced technology can build fully-dense metal components directly from CAD files with neither mould nor tool. Based on the theory of this technology, a promising rapid manufacturing system called "Laser Metal Deposition Shaping (LMDS)" is being developed significantly. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the LMDS-formed samples are tested and analyzed synthetically. As a result, significant processing flexibility with the LMDS system over conventional processing capabilities is recognized, with potentially lower production cost, higher quality components, and shorter lead time.

  • The sheet parts are formed with dies conventionally. But this conventional forming process is not suited to small volume and varied production for the reason of high cost. For the solution of this problem, a new forming process, which is called CNC incremental sheet forming, is being introduced. This process can form sheet parts without die, and is very well suited to small volume and varied production in space flight and automobile. In this paper, dieless CNC forming system based on a machining center is developed. A special device to grasp and pull the blank sheet built in the machining center and tool path generation S/W from STL file of 3-D model are developed. Several sheet parts are incrementally formed to verify the effectiveness of the developed system.

  • Multi-layered Waveguide-Below-Cutoff Array(WBCA) used in air duct and water pipe has advantages in manufacturing process as well as flow characteristics. In addition, it is possible to increase the Shielding Effectiveness(SE) by increasing the number of layers. However, since the SE of the multi-layered WBCA can not be predicted by the conventional SE equation, we propose the modified SE equation. The modified SE equation is obtained for both air and arbitrary fluid flowing in a multi-layered WBCA by increasing the number of layers from 2 to 64. In order to confirm the validity, the results of the proposed SE equations are compared with the EM simulation results.

  • Manufacturing of printed electronics using printing technology has begun to get into the hot issue in many ways due to the low cost effectiveness to existing semi-conductor process. This technology with both low cost and high productivity, can be applied in the production of organic thin film transistor (OTFT), solar cell, radio frequency identification (RFID) tag, printed battery, E-paper, touch screen panel, black matrix for liquid crystal display (LCD), flexible display, and so forth. The emerging technology to manufacture the products in mass production is roll-to-roll printing technology which is a manufacturing method by printings of multi-layered patterns composed of semi-conductive, dielectric and conductive layers. In contrary to the conventional printing machines in which printing precision is about $50~100{\mu}m$, the printing machines for printed electronics should have a precision under $30{\mu}m$. In general, in order to implement printed electronics, narrow width and gap printing, register of multi-layer printing by several printing units, and printing accuracy of under $30{\mu}m$ are all required. We developed the roll-to-roll printing equipment used for printed electronics, which is composed of un-winder, re-winder, tension measurement system, feeding units, dancer systems, guide unit, printing unit, vision system, dryer units, and various auxiliary devices. The equipment is designed based on cantilever type in which all rollers except printing ones have cantilever types, which could give more accurate machine precision as well as convenience for changing rollers and observing the process.

  • Soldiers have been exposed to the risk of chilblains in cold winters. Recent studies have described sensors and IOT devices that use independent power sources based on piezoelectric energy harvesting. Therefore, the heated shoes with an independent power source have been developed. For the application of energy harvesting to shoes, it is necessary to develop a unique harvester by considering human gait characteristics. Energy harvesters and ceramics were designed and fabricated in this study. The performances of these harvesters and ceramics were evaluated experimentally. Then, the harvesters and ceramics with superior performance were selected and applied to the system. Thereafter, the heating and charging performance of the system was tested under real walking conditions. The results show that the developed system can generate adequate energy to charge the battery and heat the shoes.

  • In this study, structural design and analysis of the automobile bonnet is performed. The flax/vinly ester composite material is applied for structural design. The Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding-Light (VARTML) manufacturing method is adopted for manufacturing the flax fiber composite bonnet. The VARTML is a manufacturing process that the resin is injected into the fly layered-up fibers enclosed by a rigid mold tool under vacuum. A series of flax/vinyl ester composite panels are manufactured, and several kinds of specimens cut out from the panels are tested to obtain mechanical performance data. Based on this, structural design of the automobile bonnet is performed.

Coupling Performance Analysis of a Buried Meshed-Ground in a Multi-layered Structure

  • Since the manufacturing process in the LTCC process does not allow solid ground planes between ceramic layers to isolate the signal lines, the buried ground should be realized as a meshed ground plane. Both characteristic impedances of the signal lines and couplings between different signal layers are influenced by the properties of these meshed planes. In this paper, we propose a new analysis method for coupling behavior between internal transmission lines, which are isolated by the buried meshed-ground planes. The coupling behavior between layers isolated by meshed-ground planes is investigated by the coupled-transmission line model for the isolated layers. The coupling factors between isolated lines with the meshed-ground are extracted by 2-D FEM calculations.
