This work studied the loading capabilities and release behaviors of poly(ethylene-alt-maleic anhydride) (PEMAh)/poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (P4VP) multilayer films formed by the layer-by-layer(LbL) sequential self-assembly method, using Rodamine 6G(R6G) as an indicator. Thickness of the multilayer, and loading and subsequent release behavior of R6G from the multilayer were studied using UV-visible spectroscopy. The amount of R6G loaded in multilayer film increased linearly with increasing film thickness. pH-Sensitive permeability was observed, where lower pH environments increased both release rate and release amount. By additional assembling of PEMAh/poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI) capping layers on top of (PEMAh/P4VP)n multilayers, the release of R6G was better controlled.

(PDDA/$SiO_2$) thin films that consisted of positively charged poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and negatively charged $SiO_2$ nanoparticles were fabricated on a glass substrate by an applying voltage layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly method. In this study, the microstructure and optical properties of the (PDDA/$SiO_2$) thin films coated on glass substrate were measured as a function of the applied voltage on the Pt electrodes. When 1.0 V was applied to a Pt electrode in a PDDA and $SiO_2$ solution, the thickness of the $(PDDA/SiO_2)_{10}$ thin film increased from 79 nm to 166 nm. The surface roughness also increased from 15.21 nm to 33.25 nm because the adsorption volume of the oppositely charged PDDA and $SiO_2$ solution increased. Especially, when the voltage was applied to the Pt electrode in the $SiO_2$ solution, the thickness increase of the (PDDA/$SiO_2$) thin film was larger than that obtained when using the PDDA solution. The refractive index of the fabricated (PDDA/$SiO_2$) thin film was ca. n = 1.31~1.32. The transmittance of the glass substrate coated by (PDDA/$SiO_2$)6 thin film with a thickness of 106 nm increased from ca. 91.37 to 95.74% in the visible range.
Polyelectrolyte membranes for humidity-sensing were fabricated using a layer-by-layer adsorption process based on the spontaneous self-assembly of alternating layers of cationic and anionic polymers on a silanized ITO patterned glass substrate. The substrate is dipped successively into dilute solutions of a polyanion and a polycation. The homopolymers and copoymers of diallyldimethylammonium chloride (DDA), allylamine hydrochloride (AA), 2-[(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethyl ammonium chloride (METAC) and vinylbenzyl tributyl phosphonium chloride(VTBPC) were used as the polycations. In this experiment, it was found that the resistance varied according to the chemical structure of the polycation. The resistance varied from $10^7$ to $10^5$$\Omega$, as the humidity was increased from 60 (relative humidity) to $95\%$RH, which is the range of RH values required for a dew sensor operating at high humidity.
A helical nanosturctrue can be obtained by self-assembly method. Utilizing DPD simulation coarse-grained model, we patterned 2D layer nanosheets with repeated diagonal defects and grafts, and programed to self-roll into hollow helix structure. The defected pattern side caused anisotropy, and formed helix or helix-like structure. This opens the possibility to control the helix pitch or cavity radius. In this work, we designed several patterns about diagonal defect with a variety of defect side densities and defect widths and then simulation was carried out. Thus, our results have that parameters are affecting self-assembly of nanosheets and their conformation.
In this study, Nafion membrane was modified to prevent methanol crossover by layer-by-layer self assembly using polyaniline (PANi) as a polycation and sulfonated poly(ether sulfone) (SPES) as a polyanion onto the Nafion surface. Since PANi and SPES possess thermal and chemical stability and rigid backbone, their layer-by-layer self-assembled films on the Nafion are expected to reduce methanol permeability and to increase mechanical stability. UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy verified a linear build-up of the multilayers of PANi and SPES. We found that the thickness per bilayer was about 10 nm by TEM measurement. Although modified Nafion membrane exhibited 15% decrease of proton conductivity, it reduceded 67% of methanol permeability compared to that of the pristine Nafion membrane, resulting in 2.5 times larger selectivity. At the performance test of the fuel cell using 5M methanol as a fuel, the modified Nafion membrane showed 2.4 times higher maximum power density at $30^{\circ}C$ and 1.4 times larger at $60^{\circ}C$ than the pristine Nafion.

We have developed a simple synthetic method for fabricating a wafer-scale colloidal crystal film of 2D crystals in a 1D stack based on a combination of two simple processes : the self-assembly of polystyrene (PS) nanospheres at the water-air interface and the layer-by-layer (LbL) scooping transfer technique. The main advantage of this approach is that it allows excellent control of the thickness (at a layer level) of the crystals and the formation of a vertical crack-free layer over a wafer-scale (4 inch). We investigate the optical and morphological properties of the PhC multilayers fabricated using various mono-sized colloidal crystals (250, 300, 350, 420, 580, 720, and 850 nm), and mixed binary colloidal crystals (300/350 and 250/350 nm).
Nanoimprint lithography (NIL) is a new lithographic method that offers a sub-10nm feature size, high throughput, and low cost. One of the most serious problems of NIL is the stiction between mold and resist. The antistiction layer coating is very effective to prevent this stiction and ensure the successful NIL results. In this paper, an antistiction layer was deposited by VSAM (vapor self assembly monolayer) method on silicon samples with FOTS (perfluoroctyltrichlorosilane) as a precursor for making an antistiction layer. A specially designed LPCVD (low pressure chemical vapor deposition) was used for this experiment. All experiments were achieved after removing the humidity. First, the evaporation test of FOTS was performed for checking the evaporation temperature at low pressure. FOTS was evaporated at 5 Tow and $110^{\circ}C$. In order to evaluate the temperature effect on antistiction layer, chamber temperature was changed from 50 to $170^{\circ}C$ with 0.1ml of FOTS for 1 minute. Good hydrophobicity of all samples was shown at about $110^{\circ}$ of contact angle and under $20^{\circ}$ of hysteresis. The surface energies of all samples calculated by Lewis acid/base theory was shown to be about 15mN/m. The deposited thicknesses of all samples measured by ellipsometry were almost 1nm that was similar value of the calculated molecular length. The surface roughness of all samples was not changed after deposition but the friction force showed relatively high values and deviations deposited at under $110^{\circ}$. Also the white circles were founded in LFM images under $110^{\circ}$. High friction forces were guessed based on this irregular deposition. The optimized VSAM process for FOTS was achieved at $170^{\circ}C$, 5 Torr for 1 hour. The hot embossing process with 4 inch Si mold was successfully achieved after VSAM deposition.

This article shows the coarsening behavior of nanoparticle multilayers during heat treatments which produce larger metallic nanostructures with varying shapes and sizes on glass slides. Nanoparticle multilayer films are initially constructed via the layer-by-layer self-assembly of small and monodispersed gold and/or palladium nanoparticles with different compositions (gold only, palladium only, or both gold and palladium) and assembly orders (compounding layers of gold layers over palladium layers or vice versa). Upon heating the slides at $600^{\circ}C$, the surface nanoparticles undergo coalescence becoming larger nanostructured metallic films. UV-Vis results show a clear reliance of the layering sequence on the optical properties of these metal films, which demonstrates an importance of the outmost (top) layers in each nanoparticle multilayer films. Topographic surface features show that the heat treatments of nanoparticle multilayer films result in the nucleation of nanoparticles and the formation of metallic cluster structures. The results confirm that different composition and layering sequence of nanoparticle multilayer films clearly affect the coalescence behavior of nanoparticles during heat treatments.
A fully packed capillary electrochromatographic (CEC) microchip with an on-column micro-solid phase extraction (SPE) bed for the preconcentration and separation of organic analytes was prepared. A linear microchannel with monodisperse colloidal silica packing was formed on a cyclic olefinic copolymer microchip with two reservoirs on both ends. Silver-cemented silica packing frit structure was formed at the entrance of the microchannel by electroless plating treatment as a base layer. A gold coating was formed on it by reducing $Au^{3+}$ to gold with hydroxylamine. Finally micro-SPE bed was formed by self-assembly adsorption of 1-dodecanethiol on it. Micro-SPE beds were about 100-150 ${\mu}m$ long. Approximately $10^3$ fold sensitivity enhancements for Sulforhodamine B, and Fluorescein in nM concentration levels were possible with 80 s preconcentration. Basic extraction characteristics were studied.
In this study, to solve the major problem of reverse osmosis (RO) membrane, surface of reverse osmosis membrane was modified by silane-epoxy multi layer. Octyltrimethoxysilane (OcTES) was polymerized to membrane surface via cross-linking by Sol-gel method. n = 8 alkylgroup of OcTES formed the branch structure by self assembly. And for improve fouling resistance of RO membrane, Ether group of ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDE) was given to improve hydrophilicity of RO membrane surface by ring-opening. To analyze structure of RO membrane surface with FE-TEM and AFM. Membrane surface of the ridge and valley structure and the bridge structure was confirmed due to the multi-layer surface modification of OcTES and EGDE. And through the increase of the roughness, the branch structure was formed well on membrane surface. Through the XPS analysis was identified chemical structure of membrane surface. And confirmed that the hydrophilic surface modification is given to the surface of the film through a Contact angle analysis. In optimization of EGDE surface modification condition, was suitable 0.5 wt% EGDE concentraion and $70^{\circ}C$ ring-opening temperature. In result of fouling resistance test and MFI is SUL-H10, $PA-OcTES_{1.0}$, $PA-OcTES_{1.0}-EGDE_{0.5}$ 68.7, 60.4, 5.4 ($10E-8hr/mL^2$), multi-layer surface modified membrane improved fouling resistance.
