Major advantages associated with, and challenges to, the fabrication of LbL electrodes, as well as the future outlook for expanding the application of LbL techniques, are discussed.
We demonstrate a facile and robust layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly method for the fabrication of nonvolatile resistive switching memory (NRSM) devices based on superparamagnetic nanocomposite multilayers, which allows the highly enhanced magnetic and resistive switching memory properties as well as the dense and homogeneous adsorption of nanoparticles, via nucleophilic substitution reaction (NSR) in nonpolar solvent. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MP) of about size 12 nm (or 7 nm) synthesized with oleic acid (OA) in nonpolar solvent could be converted into 2-bromo-2-methylpropionic acid (BMPA)-stabilized iron oxide nanoparticles (BMPA-MP) by stabilizer exchange without change of solvent polarity. In addition, bromo groups of BMPA-MP could be connected with highly branched amine groups of poly (amidoamine) dendrimer (PAMA) in ethanol by NSR of between bromo and amine groups. Based on these results, nanocomposite multilayers using LbL assembly could be fabricated in nonpolar solvent by NSR of between BMPA-MP and PAMA without any additional phase transfer of MP for conventional LbL assembly. These resulting superparamagnetic multilayers displayed highly improved magnetic and resistive switching memory properties in comparison with those of multilayers based on water-dispersible MP. Furthermore, NRSM devices, which were fabricated by LbL assembly method under atmospheric conditions, exhibited the outstanding performances such as long-term stability, fast switching speed and high ON/OFF ratio comparable to that of conventional inorganic NRSM devices produced by vacuum deposition.
Ultrathin polyelectrolyte (PE) multilayer films prepared by the versatile layer-by layer (LbL) assembly method have been utilized for the preparation of light-emitting diodes, electrochromic, membrane, and drug delivery system, as well as for selective area patterning and particle surface modification because the various materials with specific properties can be inserted into the film with nano-level thickness irrespective of the size or the shape of substrate. Since the introduction of the LbL technique in 1991 by Decher and Hong, various hydrophilic materials can be inserted within LbL films through complementary interactions (i.e., electrostatic, hydrogen-bonding or covalent interaction). In this study, it is demonstrated that LbL SA multilayer films based on nucleophilic substitution reaction can allow the preparation of the highly efficient magnetic and/or optical films and nonvolatile memory devices.

Background: The main purpose of drug delivery systems is to deliver the drugs at the appropriate concentration to the precise target site. Recently, the application of a thin film in the field of drug delivery has gained increasing interest because of its ability to safely load drugs and to release the drug in a controlled manner, which improves drug efficacy. Drug loading by the thin film can be done in various ways, depending on type of the drug, the area of exposure, and the purpose of drug delivery. Main text: This review summarizes the various methods used for preparing thin films with drugs via Layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly. Furthermore, additional functionalities of thin films using surface modification in drug delivery are briefly discussed. There are three types of methods for preparing a drug-carrying multilayered film using LbL assembly. First methods include approaches for direct loading of the drug into the pre-fabricated multilayer film. Second methods are preparing thin films using drugs as building blocks. Thirdly, the drugs are incorporated in the cargo so that the cargo itself can be used as the materials of the film. Conclusion: The appropriate designs of the drug-loaded film were produced in consideration of the release amounts and site of the desired drug. Furthermore, additional surface modification using the LbL technique enabled the preparation of effective drug delivery carriers with improved targeting effect. Therefore, the multilayer thin films fabricated by the LbL technique are a promising candidate for an ideal drug delivery system and the development possibilities of this technology are infinite.
We introduce a novel and robust method for the preparation of nanocomposite multilayers, which allows the excellent photoluminescent (PL) properties as well as the accurate control over the composition and dimensions of multilayers. By exchanging the oleic acid stabilizers of CdSe@ZnS quantum dots (QDs) synthesized in organic solvent with 2-bromo-2-methylpropionic acid (BMPA) in the same solvent, these nanoparticles were be alternately deposited by nucleophilic substitution reaction with highly branched poly(amidoamine) dendrimer (PAMA) through layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly process. Our approach does not need to be transformed into the water-dispersible nanoparticles with electrostatic or hydrogen-bonding groups, which can deteriorate their inherent properties, for the built-up of multilayers. The nanocomposite multilayers including QDs exhibited the strong PL properties achieving densely packed surface coverage as well as long-term PL stability under atmospheric conditions in comparison with those of conventional LbL multilayers based on electrostatic interaction. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the flexible multilayer films with optical properties can be easily prepared using nucleophilic substitution reaction between bromo and amino groups in organic media. This robust and tailored method opens a new route for the design of functional film devices based on nanocomposite multilayers.

In this work, poly(diallyldimethylammoniumchloride) (PDDAC) and meso-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin were considered to produce the self-assembly fabrication films. This method is based on the layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition produced by the electrostatic attraction between positively charged PDDAC and negatively charged porphyrin ions. The result of multilayer fabrication was discussed with the level of color strength (K/S). K/S spectra of the fabricated multilayer films showed gradual increase behaviors. In addition, the color photo images of the fabricated multilayer films showed that PDDAC and porphyrin were successfully attracted by electrostatic self-assembly forces.
We introduce a novel and efficient strategy for producing free-standing functional films via photo-crosslinking and electrostatic layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly, which can allow the buildup of hydrophilic multilayers onto hydrophobic surfaces. Hydrophobic multilayers were deposited on ionic substrates by a photo-crosslinking LbL process using photo-crosslinkable polymers. The photo-crosslinked surface was converted to an anionic surface by excess UV light irradiation. This treatment allowed also the stable adhesion between metal electrode or cationic polyelectrolyte and hydrophobic multilayers. After dissolving the ionic substrates in water, the formed free-standing films exhibited unique functionalities of inserted components within hydrophobic and/or hydrophilic multilayers.
