Efficacy of laughing voice treatment (SKMVTT) in benign vocal fold lesions (양성성대질환의 웃음 음성치료(SKMVTT))

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a multiple voice therapy technique ($SKMVTT^{(R)}$) using laughter for the treatment of various benign vocal fold lesions. To achieve this, 23 female patients diagnosed with vocal nodules, vocal polyp, and muscle tension dysphonia through videostroboscopy were enrolled in vocal hygiene and $SKMVTT^{(R)}$. All of the patients were treated once a week for 4 to 12 sessions. The GRBAS scale was used to confirm the changes in voice quality before and after the treatment. Acoustic analysis was performed to evaluate jitter, shimmer, NHR, fundamental frequency variation, amplitude variation, PFR, and dB range. Videostroboscopy was performed to confirm the changes in the laryngeal features before and after the treatment. After the $SKMVTT^{(R)}$, the results of the perceptual evaluation demonstrated that the G, R, and B scales significantly improved. An acoustic evaluation also demonstrated that jitter, shimmer, NHR, vAm, vFo, PFR, and dB range also significantly improved after the $SKMVTT^{(R)}$. In comparison to the videostroboscopic findings, the size of the vocal nodules and vocal polyp decreased or disappeared after the treatment. In addition, the size of the cuneiform tubercles decreased, the length of the aryepiglottic folds became longer, and the laryngeal findings of the supraglottic compressions improved after the $SKMVTT^{(R)}$. These results suggest that the $SKMVTT^{(R)}$ is effective in improving the vocal quality of patients with benign vocal fold lesions. In conclusion, it seems that laughter and inspiratory phonation suppressed abnormal laryngeal elevation and lowered laryngeal height, which seems to have the effect of improving hyperfunctional phonation.

The Effects of Voice Therapy in Age-related Dysphonia (노인성 음성장애의 음성치료 효과)

  • The This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the voice therapy we operated to the patients with age-related dysphonia. Thirty four participants who were diagnosed as age-related dysphonia in laryngoscopic finding from January, 2009 to December, 2009 completed the study. The participants were aged from 60 to 82 years old with a mean age of 70.6. All participants had received the abdominal breath technique, SKHPIP with laughter, and basic vocal training with description of their problem, the length of which ranged from four sessions to twelve sessions. We executed the videostroboscopy to compare the aspect of voicing change and the perceptual assessment, voice range profile, acoustic and aerodynamic measures to identify change of voice. Participants had glottal gap due to incomplete glottic closure during voicing on the pretest. After they took the voice therapy, the glottic gap became narrow and rough and breathy voice was reduced. There were significant difference in acoustic and aerodynamic measures. Jitter, Shimmer, MFR were reduced and MPT, Psub were increased(p<.05). Participants' pitch range and intensity range were increased on the posttest performance after taking voice therapy. Especially, most of them were showed that pitch range was increased significantly in high frequency area. The results of this investigation indicate that the voice therapy using abdominal breath, SKHPIP, and exercise together is effective for the patients who have age-related dysphonia to improve their voice quality. We recommend to apply this technique to functional voice disorders who are showed glottal gap.

Pathological Laughing and Crying following Midbrain Infarction: Case Report and Literature Review (중뇌 경색 이후 발생한 병적 웃음과 울음 환자: 증례 보고 및 문헌 고찰)

  • Pathological laughing and crying (PLC) is a condition defined by relatively uncontrollable episodes of laughter, crying or both. PLC is an uncommon symptom usually caused by cerebral lesions. Midbrain involvement causing PLC is extremely unusual and the exact mechanism by which this condition develops is poorly understood. We recently experienced a 51-year-old woman who were diagnosed as PLC after midbrain infarction. She was treated by acupuncture, pulsed electromagnetic therapy (PEMT). After 6 weeks treatment, Pathological Laughter and Crying Scale (PLACS), Korean version of the Scale for the Assessment and Rating of Ataxia (K-SARA) are decreased and Korean version of Modified Barthel Index (K-MBI) is increased. Treatment of traditional Korean Medicine could be effective for stoke rehabilitation including post-stroke PLC. And we have considered mechanism of PLC associated with midbrain lesion, dysfunction of cortex-thalamus-hypothalamus-basal ganglia-mesencephalon and faciorespiratory nuclei pathways, cerebro-ponto-cerebellar pathways and damaged serotonergic neurotransmission can cause this based on recent neurobiology of emotion. To define exact mechanism and find effective treatment, further studies are needed.

A Study of the Similarities between Comic Subtitles on Korean Television and Visual Codes in Comics (커뮤니케이션 메시지의 생산과 수용에 대한 매체기호학적 연구를 위한 제언 : 한국 텔레비전의 자막 사용이 갖는 특성을 중심으로)

  • In Korea, since the mid 1990s, the subtitles are largely employed on television programs especially on diverting programs like talk shows and game shows. The functions of these subtitles are different from those of the traditional subtitles. The traditional subtitles are used to give credits, explain an action, or represent dialogue, to be brief they are used to give informations. But the new type of subtitles are used to amuse the public. Not only the new subtitles represent words of the guests but also they present opinions or judgements of the program producer. They show also what to give attention to, what the guest feels and finally what to laugh at. These subtitles are very well received by the public. So they are employed more and more frequently by lots of programs. These subtitles will be ratted comic subtitles because their principal function Is to raise a laughter and to make fun. The purpose of this study is to attempt to find some particularities concerning the uses of the comic subtitles on Korean television. The study suggests that the comic subtitles call for the very known social codes because they should be understood clearly by the public. The forms and styles of the codes employed in the comic subtitles are very similar to those used in the comics. Some graphic codes especially developed in the comics are employed with success in the comic subtitles. The comic subtitles are aiming to amuse and provoke a laughter by written text and visual codes usually employed in the comics. But why does the program producer use the comic titles for make the public laugh? Laugh is not a emotional reaction but a act caused by the intellectual judgement. Written text and visual codes employed in the comic subtitles permit to judge the situation intellectually because they give to the public a moment for think about what they treat. They permit the public to see more clearly the situational relations which can provoke a laughter. The comic subtitles constitute now one of the main elements on Korean television. It means that the insertion of writing in the audiovisual media is popular in Korea. The study suggests that there is something in Korean culture which can favours this insertion : in Korea, writing has never been separated from painting. It seems that in Korea, there has been no clear separation between written culture and visual culture. But this point must be approached more carefully and needs profound researches.

Development of Recognition Application of Facial Expression for Laughter Theraphy on Smartphone (스마트폰에서 웃음 치료를 위한 표정인식 애플리케이션 개발)

  • In this paper, we propose a recognition application of facial expression for laughter theraphy on smartphone. It detects face region by using AdaBoost face detection algorithm from the front camera image of a smartphone. After detecting the face image, it detects the lip region from the detected face image. From the next frame, it doesn't detect the face image but tracks the lip region which were detected in the previous frame by using the three step block matching algorithm. The size of the detected lip image varies according to the distance between camera and user. So, it scales the detected lip image with a fixed size. After that, it minimizes the effect of illumination variation by applying the bilateral symmetry and histogram matching illumination normalization. After that, it computes lip eigen vector by using PCA(Principal Component Analysis) and recognizes laughter expression by using a multilayer perceptron artificial network. The experiment results show that the proposed method could deal with 16.7 frame/s and the proposed illumination normalization method could reduce the variations of illumination better than the existing methods for better recognition performance.

A Study on Fool Characters in a Culture of Laughter (웃음문화의 '바보' 캐릭터에 대하여)

  • In the postmodern world, it is widely believed that being a fool or looking foolish can be more profound and unique than being smart and serious. Comic characters, or fool characters in comedy, have been used as basic tools to make people laugh in various cultures around the world. As such, this study will summarize the types of fool characters that have been depicted in plays and organize how they can be categorized in a culture of laughter as well as revealing their characteristics in performing arts. The ridiculous actions and words of fool characters fall outside the common dichotomy of wisdom and foolishness. This is significant and it is because the ways in which they act overturn the values that we consider to be truthful in the world of experience and contain wit and ridicule beyond the general knowledge. Also, it's worth pointing out that many comic characters that appear on TV shows are not all the same. To put it simply, each and every funny character has unique traits and these characters predictably change according to the times. In performing arts, a fool character's personality is displayed through his or her interactions with the audience. That is, on one hand, the character may or may not recognize himself as a fool, while on the other hand, the audience may regard the character as a fool or otherwise. Based on this background, the comic characters that appear in performing arts are categorized into four types and their features are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the meanings of signs represented in contemporary fashion based on the Peirce's trisection theory in order to present various types of sign representation that satisfies aesthetic value and characteristics of the age of information and image. Types of signs represented in contemporary fashion can be summarized into letters, numbers, codes, pictures, logos, characters and emblems. The meanings of signs were analyzed based on the Peirce's trisection theory, resulting in representation of play, brandsymbol, eroticism and suggestion. The play was categorized into infantile and parodic. The former inspires unexpected interest and laughter from contemporary people in the age of disorder through humorous characters, cartoons and illustrations. The latter inspires laughter by parodying things and it's intention is to release the isolation of people and their relative poverty through pictures for which techniques of parody and surrealism were used. Most of the brandsymbols represented by logos, used for textile and clothing design as well as accessories are optimal signs that construct brand images. Eroticism means emotion, impulses, senses of value and sexual attraction. A desire to represent sexual attraction is an expression of eroticism and self-expression to adjust in a changing society. Suggestion tends to pursue the image of harmony with nature in a world which is pressed by material civilization. Humans represent illuminating messages through direct slogans by characters, natural objects and motives of social phenomenon in pursuit of the benefits of abundant material civilization in the structure of a highly advanced scientific civilization and industrial society.

  • This study was a phenomenological approach to the substance and meaning of large-group discussion activities in the kindergarten. Results of this study showed phenomena of the management of large-group discussion to be : 1) interchange in the natural fields of knowledge, 2) the fields of shared laughter and humor, 3) the exchange of glances individually between a teacher and children as well as children to children, 4) a bridge to connect one activity to another, 5) the guarantee of freedom in the limited space while keeping order, 6) the making of a way to connect individual children's inner self with the world, 7) conflicts between standardized themes and generated themes.

Behavioral Inhibition as a Function of Child's Early Emotionality, Parenting, and Mother-Child Attachment (아동의 초기 정서성, 양육행동 및 모자녀 애착과 남·여 아동의 행동억제간의 관계)

  • In this study of 79 3- and 4-year-old children, behavioral inhibition was assessed by their preschool teachers; mother-child attachment was assessed by the researchers in home visits; and mothers reported on their parenting and their child's emotionality at 6-12 months of age. Findings were that insecure attachment was related to high child's distress reactions to limitations (negative emotionality) in early infancy and to strong maternal rejection/hostility. Higher maternal sensitivity to child's inhibition was related to more secure attachment. Girls were more highly inhibited than boys. Smiling and laughter (positive emotionality) in early infancy was negatively related to child's inhibited behavior. Maternal sensitivity to child inhibition was positively related to child's inhibited behavior. Findings are consistent with Engfer's (1993) theory of gender differences in developmental paths into behavioral inhibition.
