  • Liver tissues were taken from rats 20 min after administration of dehydrocholic acid and biligrafin, fasted for 8 days, and bile duct ligation for 48 hr. And the zonulae occludentes around the bile canaliculi were investigated by the freeze fracture method. In the normal rats, the zonulae occludentes showed networks consisting of one to four strands in many regions. After administration of dehydrocholic acid, the depth of zonulae occludentes were increased and networks consist of six to nine strands. The zonulae occludentes, however, were disorganized, and strands were reduced after administration of biligrafin. In the fasting rats, the zonulae occludentes showed one or two strands which were loosely linked. After ligation of bile duct, the zonulae occludentes were disorganized, and strands were reduced or still in a state not to be reduced. The strands were interrupted by gaps or linear particles in all the groups, especially in the biligrafin and the ligation. The free ends were remarkable in the fasting group and contact or surround the lateral gap junctions in the dehydrocholic acid group. The discontinuities and free ends of strands were also encountered in the normal group, thus suggesting that the barrier is not complete even in the normal state. The aggregation of particles appeared within the meshwork of zonulae occludentes in all the group, except for the ligation. From the evidence, it is assumed that zonulae occludentes are labile, differ in the structure according to the situation of bile canaliculi and show regional alterations even in the same bile canaliculi, that zonulae occludentes are affected by mechanical stress or certain other factors, and that there is a correlation between the strands and particle aggregations in association with the alteration of zonulae occludentes.

  • The basis of capacity design has been explicitly or implicitly regulated in most bridge design specifications. It is to guarantee ductile failure of entire bridge system by preventing brittle failure of pier members and any other structural members until the columns provides fully enough plastic rotation capacity. Brittle shear is regarded as a mode of failure that should be avoided in reinforced concrete bridge pier design. To provide ductility behavior of column, the one of important factors is that flexural hinge of column must be detailed to ensure adequate and dependable shear strength and deformation capacity. Eight small scale circular reinforced concrete columns were tested under cyclic lateral load with 4.5 aspect ratio. The test variables are longitudinal steel ratio, transverse steel ratio, and axial load ratio. Eight flexurally dominated columns were tested. In all specimens, initial flexural-shear cracks occurred at 1.5% drift ratio. The multiple flexural-shear crack width and length gradually increased until the final stage. The angles of the major inclined cracks measured from the vertical column axis ranged between 42 and 48 degrees. In particular, this study focused on assessing transverse reinforcement contribution to the column shear strength. Transverse reinforcement contribution measured during test. Each three components of transverse reinforcement contribution, axial force contribution and concrete contribution were investigated and compared. It was assessed that the concrete stresses of all specimen were larger than stress limit of Korea Bridge Design Specifications.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the structural safety fur both the attached wind-protecting wall in greenhouse and the detached one installed outside. Regarding the attached wind-protecting wall in greenhouse, the analysis was conducted by doing a fluid-structure coupled field analysis using both CFX-5.7 and ANSYS 8.1 and also under the design condition of an instantaneous maximum wind velocity of $30.9m{\cdot}s^{-1}$. Three kinds of the width ranged from 30 to 90cm were considered in this study. With regard to the detached wind-protecting wall, the structural saffty was analyzed under the pressure difference of 1,117 Pa which corresponded to a wind velocity of $50m{\cdot}s^{-1}$ and the analytical results were also compared with theoretical ones. The result showed that there was little difference in the distribution of velocity overall and total pressure on the lateral side according to the width of the attached wind-protecting wall, but greenhouse with wind-protecting widths of 30 to 60cm has been reinforced to the extent of about 11% when compared with the case of being without the wall. The result also showed that the detached wind-protecting wall with a main-column interval of 3m was not stable so that it was necessary for the detached wind-protecting wall to be adequately reinforced to secure structural stability. Finally, there was great difference between analytical results and theoretical studies. The difference meant that there was some possibility of including errors when a theoretical study was done in three dimensional structure.

  • A drilling exploration in deep sea is being processed to develop new energy resource in the world. In 2007, the presence of the gas hydrate had been confirmed during the UBGH1 (Ulleung Basin Gas Hydrate Expedition 1) in the Ulleung Basin. Geotechnical properties of the deep marine sediment are important factors for assessing the safety of gas production facility and productivity from the hydrate bearing sediment. In this study, comprehensive laboratory tests are conducted to investigate the geotechnical engineering characteristics of the deep marine sediments recovered from the hydrate occurrence regions during the UBGH2 (Ulleung Basin Gas Hydrate Expedition 2) in the Ulleung Basin, East Sea, Korea. The index properties of the specimens including the specific gravity, atterberg limits, specific surface, and particle size distribution are measured, and these are compared to the results reported by previous studies. A zero-lateral strain cell, which houses bender elements, is used to determine stress-dependant characteristics and shear wave velocities with the vertical effective stresses. Furthermore, the hydraulic conductivity is calculated based on the consolidation test results.

  • Two types of piloti-type high-rise RC building structures having irregularity in the lower two stories were selected as prototypes, and nonlinear time history analysis was performed using OpenSees to verify the analysis technique and to investigate the seismic capacity of those buildings. One of the buildings studied had a symmetrical moment-resisting frame (BF), while the other had an infilled shear wall in only one of the exterior frames (ESW). A fiber model, consisting of concrete and reinforcing bar represented from the stress-strain relationship, was adapted and used to simulate the nonlinearity of members, and MVLEM (Multi Vertical Linear Element Model) was used to simulate the behavior of the wall. The analytical results simulate the behavior of piloti-type high-rise RC building structures well, including the stiffness and yield force of piloti stories, the rocking behavior of the upper structure and the variation of the axial stiffness of the column due to variation in loading condition. However, MVLEM has a limitation in simulating the abrupt increasing lateral stiffness of a wall, due to the torsional mode behavior of the building. The design force obtained from a nonlinear time history analysis was shown to be about $20{\sim}30%$ smaller than that obtained in the experiment. For this reason, further research is required to match the analytical results with real structures, in order to use nonlinear time history analysis in designing a piloti-type high-rise RC building.

  • Supernumerary teeth are teeth which result from the continued budding of the enamel organ of the preceding tooth or from excessive proliferation of cells. They are most often found in the maxillary anterior region. And they can be responsible for a variey of irregularities in the primary and transitional dentition. There are two morphological types of supernumerary teeth, supplemental and rudimentary. Supplemental teeth have normal shape and size. In contrast, rudimental teeth have abnormal shape and smaller size. Supplemental supernumerary teeth are most common in permanent lateral incisor area. Its extraction must be decided more carefully with differential diagnosis between normal teeth, because it has normal shape and size. We reports 3 cases of the normal incisor shaped teeth in the maxillary anterior region. In all cases, we used the 3D Dental-CT as well as the conventional plain film such as periapical, occlusal, and panoramic radiograph. Consequently, 3B Dental-CT was valualble to figure out the exact position and morphology of supernumerary teeth, to do more conservative surgery and to reduce surgery stress and time.

  • Purpose: Eczema herpeticum, caused by herpes simplex virus, is an infectious disease involving skin and internal organs. Varieties of physiologic, psychosocial, or environmental stress reactivate reservoir virus which exists in the trigeminal nerve ganglia. Authors report rare cases of nasal eczema herpeticum following corrective rhinoplasty. Methods: First case, 22-year-old female underwent corrective rhioplasty through an external approach in a local clinic. She developed progressive and painful erythema, nodules and vesicles on nose on the 9th day postoperatively. This unfamiliar lesion lead to a misdiagnosis as a bacterial infection, and had accelerated its progress to the trigeminal innervation of the nasal unit. Second case, a 23-year-old female underwent corrective rhinoplasty by external lateral osteotomy. Ten days after the surgery, disruption occurred on the external osteotomy site, and the ulceration gradually worsened. The surgeon misdiagnosed it as secondary bacterial infection and only an antibacterial agent was applied. Results: Both cases were healed effectively without any complication with proper wound dressing and antiviral therapy, and show no sequelae during an 8-month follow-up period. Conclusion: Eczema herpeticum is rare in the field of plastic surgery, but it should be kept in mind that secondary bacterial infections may lead to serious complications such as full-thickness skin loss. Thus, acknowledgement of the patient's past history regarding perioral or intraoral lesion may provide the surgeon with the possible expectancy of eczema herpeticum. Thus, if anyone develops eczema herpeticum, following facial plastic surgery, early diagnosis and immediate proper antiviral therapy will allow fast recovery without serious complications.

  • This paper presents the results of a parametric study on the interaction between buried pipes and surface load using the finite element method of analysis. A series of laboratory model tests were also performed in order to validate the adopted finite element model and to capture essential features of the physical behavior of buried pipes subjected to surface load. In the parametric study, a wide range of boundary conditions were analyzed with emphasis on the response of the buried pipes to surface load. The results of analysis such as contact stress distribution at the soil/pipe interface and axial thrust of the pipe were thoroughly analyzed, and a database on the response of buried pipe under surface load was established for future development of a semi-empirical design/analysis method. The results indicated that the degree of interaction between buried pipes and surface load significantly varies with the vertical and lateral location of pipe with respect to surface load, and that the current design method, which does not consider soil-structure interaction, cannot correctly capture the pipe response to surface loading. Furthermore, based on the results of analysis, a semi-empirical equation was suggested, which estimates the maximum pipe thrust due to surface load for flexible buried pipes.

  • The treatments for spinal canal stenosis are radicular cyst removal, spine fusion, and implantation of an artificial intervertebral disc. Artificial intervertebral discs have been most widely used since the mid-2000s. The study of artificial intervertebral discs has been focused on the analysis of the axial rotation, lateral bending, the degrees of freedom of the disc, and flexion-extension of the vertebral body. The issue of fatigue failure years after the surgery has arisen as a new problem. Hence, study of artificial intervertebral discs must be focused on the fatigue failure properties and increased durability of the sliding core. A finite element model based on an in the artificial intervertebral disc (SB Charit$\acute{e}$ III) was produced, and the influence of the radius of curvature and the change in the coefficient of friction of the sliding core on the von-Mises stress and contact pressure was evaluated. Based on the results, new artificial intervertebral disc models (Models-I, -II, and -III) were proposed, and the fatigue failure behavior of the sliding core after a certain period of time was compared with the results for SB Charit$\acute{e}$ III.

  • Since the observation of ground motions in South Korea, liquefaction manifestation was the first to be observed in Pohang earthquake in 2017 with $M_L$ 5.4. Because liquefaction causes ground settlement and lateral spread damaging in-ground or super structures, various researchers have been analyzing the Pohang liquefaction case history to better understand and predict liquefaction consequence and to prevent future disasters. In prior research at the 2018 EESK conference, a map of Liquefaction Potential Index (LPI), indicating the severity of liquefaction, in Pohang was created and compared with damage observations. The LPI correlated well with the observations, but the severity categorized by LPI range was significantly higher than the actual observations in most regions. The prior LPI map was created evaluating ground motions using the simplified approach. In this research, we perform the effective site response analyses with porewater pressure generation model for the detailed evaluation of liquefaction on the liquefied sites in Pohang. We found that the simplified approach for LPI evaluation can overestimate the severity.
