  • Sediments deposited on lateral drain pipes in a tunnel make lateral porous pipes clogged. Since the safety of the tunnel can be affected by this phenomenon, it requires a regular maintenance of the lateral drain pipes. In this study, a series of centrifugal tests were conducted in order to find out the method which can reduce the clogging effect considerably. Four different types of tunnel drain configurations were selected in the experiments. By analysis of sediments for each configuration, the optimum drain configuration that can minimize sedimentation of cement constituents was investigated. As a results, the existing drain configuration which uses filter concrete appear to produce much sediments. In contrast, the new drain configuration appears to be able to reduce sedimentation ratio up to almost 50% comparing with the existing one. From these observations, it may be concluded that the new drain configuration, in which the lateral porous pipes of a tunnel are surrounded by gravel layer and non-woven geotextile, has high efficiency in maintenance.

  • The finite difference software Flac3D is used to study the influence of tunnel burial depth, tunnel diameter and lateral pressure coefficient of original rock stress on the stress and deformation of tunnel surrounding rock under sandstone condition. The results show that the maximum shear stress, the radius of the plastic zone and the maximum displacement in the surrounding rock increase with the increase of the diameter of the tunnel. When the lateral pressure coefficient is 1, it is most favorable for surrounding rock and lining structure, with the increase or decrease of lateral pressure coefficient, the maximum principal stress, surrounding displacement and plastic zone range of surrounding rock and lining show a sharp increase trend, the plastic zone on the lining increases with the increase of buried depth.

  • We analyzed the behavior of the lining segments considering the middle slab and lateral pressure coefficients when planning the construction of a duplex tunnel for the underground network. Reviewed segment lining analysis for research, the analytical model was determined for duplex tunnel. Also reviewed the vertical load, and a load of middle slab is considered the static load and the live load by vehicles. Section force by middle slabs a load applied was mainly generated in the lower tunnel had the greatest effect on the bending moment. In addition, the bending moment acting direction changes appeared with a large variable, and the section force according to the load applied to the middle slab is relatively constant and the effect on the segment lining from the smallest section force of the lateral pressure coefficient of 1.00 was found to occur appears most significantly. As a result of this research to identify the behavior of the slab and the segment lining by the effect of the lateral pressure coefficient (K) of the duplex tunnel will be able to present a method of the duplex tunnel structure is reasonable and economical design.

  • Most of the soundproof tunnels generate significant discharge noise through their inlets and outlets so that the length of the tunnel has been extended frequently than required to minimize the effect on such discharge noise. Thus, in this paper, we investigate reduction capability of discharge noise from the sound proof tunnel installed with lateral sound-absorbing panels on the partitioned truss members in the longitudinal direction of the tunnel. In conclusion, noise field analysis results shows that the sound proof tunnels with lateral sound-absorbing panels have an effect on discharge noise abatement and thereby tunnel's length reduction.

  • Two dimensional Analysis has been applied to most of tunnel lining design in these days. Two dimensional analysis uses beam or curved beam element for finite element method. But because the behaviors of tunnel concrete lining structure is near to shell, it is required to model the tunnel lining as shell structure for safety design of tunnel lining structure. In this paper, two dimensional analysis by beam element and the three dimensional analysis by shell element of tunnel concrete lining are studied, in which 3 type of tunnel lining and lateral pressure factors are considered. As results of the study, three dimensional analyses of the behavior of tunnel concrete lining structure considering lateral pressure factor shows that the moment of three dimensional analysis is greater than those of two dimensional analysis. The results shows that three dimensional analysis is necessary for safety design of tunnel lining.

  • Recently reclamation land is largely developed to utilize the land according to economic growth. The soil of landfill is soft, low shear strength, which makes it difficult to use the equipment. A large movement is occurred on the utility tunnel under construction. The inclined land with high water level and underground facilities are widely distributed and the excess pore water pressure may occur under construction similarly to this study. Some different conditions are made to design result, such as 4m of soil piling near the construction area, heavy rainfall during 2nd excavation that may cause flow liquefaction. To analyze the cause of transverse lateral movement, Three dimensional analysis are performed to four load cases, which is original design condition, flow liquefaction by heavy rainfall, unsymmetric lateral soil pressure, and both of them simultaneously. Ten steps of full construction stage, 1st excavation for utility tunnel, construction of utility tunnel, 1st refill, piling soil from 1m to 4 m, 2nd excavation for drainage culvert, liquefaction around the utility tunnel, construction of drainage culvert and 2nd refill, are take into account to investigate the cause of movement.

  • Scaled model tests were performed to explore the influence of eccentric load and lateral earth pressure on tunnel behavior and their results were verified through numerical analyses. As a method for reducing the eccentric load acting on tunnel, an eccentric supporting system (ESS) was proposed and its applicability was investigated. Experimental results showed that displacement decreased overall and the load inducing initial cracks increased as the eccentric supporting system was applied. The maximum eccentric vertical load which impacted the stability of tunnel was also increased. The test results on the influence of lateral earth pressure on tunnel behavior showed that the general aspect of displacement and crack growth changed significantly depending on the coefficient of lateral earth pressure. In addition, the weak zone In view of stability varied as well.

  • Tunnel excavation leads to a disturbance on the initial stress balance of surrounding soils, which causes convergences around the tunnel and settlements at the ground surface. Considering the effective impact of settlements on the structures at the surface, it is necessary to estimate them, especially in urban areas. In the present study, ground settlements due to the excavation of East-West Line 7 of the Tehran Metro (EWL7) and the Abuzar tunnels are evaluated and the effect of the lateral earth pressure coefficient ($K_0$) on their extension is investigated. The excavation of the tunnels was performed by TBMs (Tunnel Boring Machines). The coefficient of lateral earth pressure ($K_0$) is one of the most important geotechnical parameters for tunnel design and is greatly influenced by the geological characteristics of the surrounding soil mass along the tunnel route. The real (in-situ) settlements of the ground surface were measured experimentally using leveling methods along the studied tunnels and the results were compared with evaluated settlements obtained from both semi-empirical and numerical methods (using the finite difference software FLAC3D). The comparisons permitted to show that the adopted numerical models can effectively be used to predict settlements induced by a tunnel excavation. Then a numerical parametric study was conducted to show the influence of the $K_0$ values on the ground settlements. Numerical investigations also showed that the shapes of settlement trough of the studied tunnels, in a transverse section, are not similar because of their different diameters and depths of the tunnels.

  • This study performed model tunnel tests in order to investigate the influence of discontinuity condition of rock mass to the stress and deformation of tunnel lining. Tests were carried out changing the direction of main joint and lateral earth pressure condition of rock mass. Test results revealed that the axial force in tunnel lining showed a tendency of decrease with the presence of joints. It decreased much with the increase of lateral earth pressure coefficient. And, it also showed that the location or maximum displacement and maximum stress in lining were changed by the direction of main joint of rock mass. The tangential stress and normal stress showed the difference above the maximum twenty times as lateral earth pressure coefficient due to effect of joints increased. Also, these tendencies of concentration of tensile stress in tunnel lining were confirmed by elastic theory.
